CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES COLLECTION What is the Catholic Relief Services Collection? The Catholic Relief Services Collection supports Catholic Church organizations that carry out international relief and solidarity efforts. Programs include relief and resettlement services to the victims of persecution, war and natural disas-ters as well as development projects to improve the living conditions of the poor; advocacy on behalf of the power-less; peace and reconciliation work for people suffering from violence; and legal and support services for poor im-migrants. Through the eyes of faith, the starving child, the believer in jail, and the woman without clean water or health care are not issues, but Jesus in disguise”. The CRS Collection is next weekend, envelopes are at the end of the pews. Your generous sup-port is always appreciated by those less fortunate than us.

TOWN HALL MEETING WITH SUPERVISOR ED JEW

Holy Name of Jesus parish will sponsor a town hall meeting with District 4 Supervisor Ed Jew on Wednesday, March 28, 2007, from 7:30 to 9:00 PM in the Flanagan Cen-ter. Our community organizing team is working on an interesting and relevant agenda. The topics that will be pre-sented to Supervisor Jew, for his point of view and pro-posed resolution are: quality of life in the Sunset, traffic safety, condition of parks and recreation centers, and public libraries, among others. There will be a “question and an-swer” period for the participants. Please mark your calen-dar. COME AND LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD!

    HOLY NAME PARISH LENTEN RETREAT

To help ourselves prepare for the sacred celebra-tion of the Holy Week, the parish will have a day of prayer and reflection on Saturday, March 31, 2007 , starting with Mass in the church at 9:00 AM. The retreat will be held in the Flanagan Center. It will be directed by Fr. Florencio “JP” Villanueva, a priest in residence at St. Veronica Parish in South San Francisco. The day will end with a penitential service and con-fessions at 3:00 to 4:30 PM. Please come, to begin the holiest week of the Christian liturgical calendar in a most fitting way. Snacks will be provided by the Lay Canossians, just bring your lunch. Thanks.

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED: SIGN UP TO OPPOSE AB374

As a follow-up of last week bulletin’s article on the Califor-nia legislative bill which would legalize physician assisted suicide in our State, signatures will be collected in back of church after every Mass this weekend. The archdiocesan Office of Public Policy and Social Con-cerns has provided us with the sign-up sheet. Please support actively the Catholic Church teaching and stance regarding a Consistent Life Ethic. “Whatever its motives and means, direct euthanasia consists in putting an end to the lives of handicapped, sick, or dying persons. It is morally unaccept-able.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 2277) Everyone is encouraged to write or call Assembly member Fiona Ma, a co-sponsor of the bill, to request that she change her position regarding this matter.

A SUNDAY FOR REJOICING Today’s Gospel story of the prodigal son is a favorite of many. We can identify with all the major figures and their crisscross of emotions. The father’s initial grief over his young son’s avarice is turned to relief at his return. The son’s grief over his loss of fortune, family, and friends is turned to delirious joy at the sight of his father. We understand the eldest son’s bewilderment over his father’s generosity. For the older son, virtue seems not to be its own reward. For all his honorable toil and loyalty, there seems to be no celebration. The father, however, is prodigal in his forgiveness and mercy. He expects the same generosity from his older son. He wants all to rejoice when the lost one is found. This is a Sunday for rejoicing. It’s time to pause, con-sider, and encourage one another. We are the prodigal chil-dren heading home. We are the elder siblings waiting with the eager Father, who scans the horizon. In Christ Jesus we are reconciled to the Father and one another. In his death and resurrection we have passed over. We are a new crea-tion. In this we rejoice. © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

    Fourth Sunday of Lent

“LET US CELEBRATE WITH A FEAST” As we leave winter behind and enter into the home

stretch of our Lenten journey we have good reason to cele-brate. We know that with each new sunrise we will enjoy more warmth and daylight. We know also that Christ, our risen “Sun,” is bringing more and more warmth and light into the world with each new day. How better to celebrate than with a feast! The first reading, the psalm, and the Gos-pel for this Sunday all refer to feasts. Each of these feasts celebrates what the psalm calls “the goodness of the Lord” (Psalm 34:9). The spring Passover festival in the reading from Joshua celebrates God’s gift of the land of Canaan to the Israelites. In the Gospel parable the father doesn’t give a thought to his prodigal son’s sins or to his own injured feelings. He proclaims, “Let us celebrate with a feast!” (Luke 15:23). He then leaves his own banquet to encourage his elder son to “celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life again” (Luke 15:32).

MINISTRY OF RECONCILIATION All three of these feasts point to the one banquet

that we will celebrate in the promised land of heaven, and that we anticipate in the eucharistic banquet. At the Eucha-rist we celebrate the infinite forgiveness and love God has shown us in Christ. However, we are not simply to relax at the table and drink in our own forgiveness. St. Paul reminds us that God has “given us the ministry of reconciliation” (2 Corinthians 5:18). Like the brothers in the parable, God’s generosity to us should open our hearts to forgive and ask forgiveness of our brothers and sisters in Christ. Like the father in the parable, we are to be “ambassadors for Christ,” extending “the message of reconciliation” (2 Corinthians 5:19, 20) to all those who need Christ’s reconciling forgive-ness. The heavenly banquet will not be complete until all people come to the feast and “taste and see the goodness of the Lord” (Psalm 34:9).
