NEWSLETTER No. 33 26th October 2017
Dear Parents, Friends and Students
On Monday I had the privilege of accompanying the Year 5
class on their Leadership Retreat. They visited St Mary’s
Cathedral, participated in a tour of the Cathedral, visited St
John’s Pro-Cathedral, visited the crypt of Bishop Matthew
Gibney and then joined the Cathedral Parish for Mass. It
was a great experience for the students to develop a better
understanding of the Mother Church in the Archdiocese of
Perth and to spend some time in prayer at the crypt of our
patron. This Friday, as a school community, we celebrate
Matthew Gibney Day. Bishop Matthew Gibney was the 3rd
Bishop of Perth. He was a man of great vision and was
courageous in carrying out the convictions that he held for
the Catholic Church in Perth at the time. He understood the
importance of a Catholic Education system and that all
Catholic children have the opportunity to be educated in a
Catholic context. Many of the early Catholic schools were
built on land purchased by Matthew Gibney. Our school
was named in his honour because of his commitment to the
Catholic Education system. Our day will begin with a Mass
at 9:00am. The Mass will be held here at our school in the
undercover area. All parents and members of our
community are invited to join with us. Following the Mass
we will have the traditional cutting of the Matthew Gibney
Birthday cake. After morning tea, the students will
participate in a tabloid sports morning that will be led by the
Year 6 students. After lunch the students will perform
various items at the grandparent’s afternoon tea. We are
looking forward to the day and sharing it with all members of
our community.
I would like to thank the parents who attended the P&F
meeting last night. At the meeting, the final community and
fundraising events were explained along with some initial
planning for events in 2018. At the meeting it was revealed
that 3 of the Executive positions will be vacant with those
members not standing again for various reasons.
Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord
Jesus Christ,
(Romans 5:1)
Therefore, I am asking the parent community to seriously
consider being part of the P&F Executive in 2018. The role
of the P&F is primarily one of community building as well as
being a voice for parents in our school. It is vitally important
that we have a vibrant and active P&F in order for our
school to continue to be the place that it is. If you are
prepared to consider these positions and would like to know
more information, please don’t hesitate to come and see
me. I would be very happy to discuss this with anyone who
is interested.
Monday, November 1st is the Feast of All Saints, the day
put aside by the Church to recognise the great heroes of the
Church. The students will be attending Mass at St Francis
of Assisi Church on this day. Mass will take place at
9:30pm. All parents and members of our community are
invited to attend.
Our first assembly for this term will take place on Friday 3rd
November. It will begin at 9:00am and it will be held in the
undercover area. All parents and members of our
community are invited to join with us.
It was unfortunate this week that, due to a lack of
volunteers, we had to close the canteen at recess. I
understand that many of our parents work and just don’t
have the time to volunteer however, I ask that if anyone has
the time to help out in the canteen that they generously do
so.
A reminder to all families that Monday 6th November is a
pupil free day and, as such, students will not be required to
come to school on this day.

YEAR 5 NEWS
Last Monday, the Year 5 class travelled to St Mary's
Cathedral in the city for their Leadership Excursion. We
had a tour of the first Catholic Church in Perth which is a
building next to Mercedes College. Then we visited the
crypt under the Cathedral, where our patron, Matthew
Gibney is buried and placed some flowers near the
plaque to show our respect. We learnt more about
Matthew Gibney and his achievements. We attended
Mass at the Cathedral and then travelled up to King's
Park for lunch and a play. It was a great day and the
students were a credit to the name of Matthew Gibney.

Matthew Gibney Day
As we look forward to celebrating our Matthew Gibney
Day tomorrow, I would like to thank the staff, parents and
students who have worked so hard to make this day
come together. My special thanks to the staff of Matthew
Gibney who have assisted with the Mass, organised the
Tabloid Sports and Grandparent’s Afternoon and all the
other countless little jobs that needed doing.

YEAR 3 NEWS
Congratulations to all the Year 3s and Sienna Anton on
making their First Reconciliation. You all did a fantastic
job last Wednesday! Last week we also had our retreat to
Schoenstatt Shrine in Armadale, where students learnt
how to become a warrior like Jesus and follow in his
honest footpath.
This week we have continued practising for Matthew
Gibney Day and cannot wait to show everyone the hard
work the class and Mrs Aldred have put into our
performance.
On Tuesday we began our next writing topic of
‘Procedures’. Students have started to write their chosen
recipe or instructions and are then set to turn their writing
into a script to perform as their own T.V. show. Students
will be assessed by fellow peers on their writing and
recorded performance.

KINDY NEWS
Thank you so much to all of the parents and grandparents
who came with us on our excursion to the cuddly farm. It
was great to have so many helpers and the children had a
great day. The weather ended up being perfect for a visit
to the farm and, as expected, the bus ride and size of the
animal poos was a great fascination!
We have some very angry Kindy ladybugs on our Kindy
walls. Please don’t hesitate to come and see what makes
your kindy ladybug angry

“After nearly 4 and a half years we are looking for a new School Banking Coordinator to take over the role for 2018 and keep the program running. It is very easy to do and the kids love banking their hard earned coins each week! Full training is provided by CBA and Amanda & Michelle are still on hand to help out as we wrap up the year. Please think about it. It
doesn't take up much time and I'm sure the children would miss their weekly school banking if it wasn't to return next year. Thanks! “
