NEWSLETTER No. 25 22nd August 2019

Dear Parents, Friends and Students

This week the focus is very much on the Performing Arts

and Athletics. The students across various year levels

are carrying out their final preparations for their

performances. We thank Mrs Aldred for her dedication to

this task and to the staff for their support. This is a great

opportunity for those who have a flair for the arts to have

an opportunity to excel. It is also an opportunity for other

students to enjoy a different aspect of education that they

may not regularly participate in.

This week is also our Faction Athletics Carnival. Miss

Andersen has been working with each of the classes to

ensure the students are well prepared for their events on

carnival day. Our jumps and throws took place this

morning with our running and team events taking place on

Friday. Even though the current forecast is not as kind as

it could be, we are committed to try to run the event on its

scheduled day. By the time you read this newsletter, the

school will have contacted all families to let them know

what is going on. The reality is that rescheduling is a

tricky exercise with the school calendar already very full.

We are also aware that many parents take the day off to

support their children. The day may start a little later than

originally advertised but we will attempt to complete the

carnival on Friday. Thank you to the many parents who

have generously volunteered their time to help out on

both days. We certainly appreciate your support.

Thank you to the P&F for their work in organising the

Fathers’ Day Breakfast. Although it is a little earlier than

usual this year, it is an opportunity for Dads to spend

some time with your children at school and, at the same

time, enjoy a breakfast.

The Year 2 class held their Liturgy of the Word on

Wednesday morning. It was fantastic to see the large

number of parents and grandparents join the students.

The students participated enthusiastically and their

closing hymn was full of actions and animation. In his

homily Father Joseph reminded that the children that we

needed to continually grow towards God’s love in all that

we do. He explained to us that we are created in the

image and likeness of God and, therefore, we share

God’s love in all that we meet. Thank you to Mrs Nickels

for preparing the students so well for their Liturgy.

A big thank you to the mums who are running the Book

Fair this year. The fair begins on Friday 23rd of August

and closes on the morning of Wednesday 28th August. It

will be open before and after school each day in the

library. Everyone is welcome to come along and

purchase a book or other related items.

their support in this event.

I wish you all a safe week

YEAR 1 NEWS

The Year One children have been doing some fantastic writing lately, including re-telling the story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff from the point of view of one of the goats (with lots of wonderful adjectives!) and some simple poems about our up-coming Faction Athletics Carnival. We have also been talking about this in Health and discussing how we sometimes feel nervous or anxious and the steps we can take to help calm ourselves in those situations.

Here are just a few of our poems...

I will run next. I'm tired. I am coming first.

I'm doing this! By Brody and Xavier

I can see Year One racing. I can hear feet go pounding.

I can feel my breath and grass. By Ben P. and Marcus

I can see kids running at their top speeds, I can hear clapping and

feet stomping on the ground, I feel nervous when we start running.

YEAR 5 NEWS

Yesterday we were so proud to finally be able to hand

over to St Vincent De Paul, 25 brand new sleeping bags.

Over Terms 2 and 3, we have raised over $600 through

our Mini Vinnies Milo Mornings. Colin Krause, the Youth

Development Officer from Vinnies, came to school and

talked to the Year 5 Class about how the sleeping bags

will be used at Tom Fisher House in Highgate. This is a

place where adults, who are sleeping rough, can get 7

days of care (hot food, showers, medical care) before

having to leave, so that others can have turn. When they

leave they will be able to take one of our sleeping bags.

Colin also talked about the other work that St Vincent De

Paul does in Perth, and how our Matthew Gibney Team

can assist. We want to thank our whole community for

supporting us, coming each week to buy a warm milo.

We are making a difference in people’s lives and most

importantly, MAKING JESUS REAL!

Confirmation 2019

A big thank you to all the students who have returned

their Confirmation Card Information so promptly. This

really helps us in our preparations for the weekend of the

7th and 8th September. On the 4th September the

Confirmation Candidates will attend a day of prayer and

reflection at North Perth Monastery. This will be followed

by the rehearsal in the Church straight afterwards. The

permission slip for this will be sent home next week.

GOOD LUCK BOYS! Early this coming Saturday morning Year 6 Students Benjamin Davey and Zachary Hogg will fly out to Canberra along with 12 other 11 and 12 year old boys as part of the School Sports WA 12 & Under Boys Football (Soccer) Team to compete in the School Sports Australia national championship which runs from Monday 26 to Friday 30 August. Ben and Zach who play for the local Forrestfield United Soccer Club underwent a six week trial and selection process earlier in Term 2 in which 165 boys registered to trial. The boys were presented with their team shirts at a presentation at John Curtin College of the Arts last night. Both boys are extremely passionate about their football and have been working extremely hard to prepare for the championship, training or playing up to five times a week with the state team, their own Club team and additional training with an older U13s team at the Club. We wish Ben and Zach all the very best in Canberra next week and know that they will strive to play their very best as well as demonstrate the highest level of sportsmanship to do both their state and Matthew Gibney proud. The boys will be lucky enough to get to tour the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) as part of this Department of Education excursion. Ben and Zach are also very grateful to our P & F Association for their contribution to support them in making the trip. For those interested in following the boy's and the team's progress, here is a link to the fixtures for the national championship which will also have the results as the matches are completed.

the environment by offering recycling

collection for household batteries. You

can drop your batteries off in the metal

collection bin in the hallway opposite the

Year 3 class room.

YEAR 3 NEWS

These past weeks in Year Three we have been very

excitedly looking at Australia’s Neighbouring countries for

our Inquiry unit. We have nearly finished our beautiful

sunset art work pieces that highlight a national landmark

in each of our neighbouring countries and we can’t wait to

have them hanging up in our room. We have been

investigating the 10 Commandments given to Moses and

also talking about the two commandments that Jesus

gave us. We have started our Year Three God Moments

box and are really trying hard to live our lives by helping

other and using kind words, following the example of

Jesus. We are very excited for our upcoming excursion to

Sci-Tech in a few weeks’ time.

CHILDREN’S LITURGY AT ST FRANCIS OF ASSISI

Children’s Liturgy takes place during the 9.30am Mass on

Sunday mornings. Children from Kindy to year 4 are welcome

to come and hear about the Gospel reading of the day at their

own level. They also do a little activity about it.

Please bring your child to the hall before Mass starts (we are

there from 9.15am), and then we will bring them across to the

Church for the Offertory procession, where they take up the

gifts and show Father their work. They then rejoin their family

for the rest of Mass.

This is a lovely way for children to learn about Jesus, and

feeling part of the Parish community.

Thank you.
