NEWSLETTER No. 12 3rd May2018
Dear Parents, Friends and Students
I would like to welcome you all back to our school as we
begin Term 2. I would particularly like to welcome our
new family, Mia (Year 6), Bethany (Year 4) and Joshua
(Year 2) to our school. We hope that they find their time
here warm and welcoming. Term 2 is a very busy term
with lots of different events taking place. Please read the
newsletter each week in order to stay up to date with what
is going on along with regular updates via our Skoolbag
app. If you haven’t downloaded the Skoolbag app,
instructions on how to do so can be found in the school
administration.
I would like to thank our families for supporting our school
uniform policy by ensuring that students came to school
at the beginning of the term in winter uniform. Although
Monday was a little warm, it didn’t take long for the
weather to change and for the cooler weather to arrive.
School uniform is a non-negotiable aspect of our school.
All students are expected to be in uniform at all times. If
your child is to be out of uniform for any reason, please
send a note to your child’s teacher explaining this and the
length of time they will be out of uniform. Your
cooperation in this matter is appreciated.
We have already entered into the month of May. It is the
tradition of the Catholic Church that this month is
dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God. It is during this
month that all Catholics are encouraged to pray the
rosary. The statue of Our Lady of the Rosary will be at
our school next week. There will be a special procession
of the statue on Monday morning which will then be
placed in our Sacred Space. Each class will be given the
For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome
the world, even our faith. (1 John 5:4)
opportunity to pray at least a decade of the rosary while it
is at our school. Thank you to the Legion of Mary for
providing our school with this opportunity.
ANZAC Day took place during the school holidays this
year. As a school community we will be recognising
ANZAC Day with a special Liturgy on Friday 4th May.
The Liturgy will be held on the grassed area adjacent to
the undercover area. It will begin at 9:00am. All parents
and members of our community are invited to join with us
as we recognise the many men and women who made
the ultimate sacrifice while defending our country. We
also recognise those who still serve our country in the
armed forces.
Mother’s Day takes place on Sunday 13th May. As a
school community we will celebrate a Mass for Mothers
on Friday 11th May. It will start at 9:30am and it will be
held at St Francis of Assisi Church in Maida Vale. All
parents and members of our community, particularly
mothers and grandmothers, are invited to join with us and
then stay for the morning tea that will follow. I would like
to thank the P&F who are coordinating the morning tea
and who did a fantastic job coordinating the Mother’s Day
gifts.
Our Faction Cross Country Carnival will take place on
Thursday 10th May for students in Years 1-6. Miss
Andersen has provided specific information regarding this
event with this newsletter. All parents and members of
our community are invited to come along and support the
students in this very arduous event. It would be great if

YEAR 4 NEWS We have already had a very hectic start to term 2. The
children have been busy learning about ANZAC day and
the true spirit of our ANZACS in preparation for our whole
school Liturgy tomorrow.
Yesterday we were treated to a visit from the West Coast
Eagles including Rick the Rock. They discussed the
importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, both
physically and emotionally.
The Year 4 children also participated in their Eucharistic
workshops after school yesterday. This is an important
part of their preparation in receiving this important
sacrament. A reminder to please ensure that your child
returns their permission slip to attend our retreat.

Anzac Day Service
We will be holding our Anzac
Day Service tomorrow Friday
4th May at 9am. It will be led
by the Year 5 class. We
warmly welcome family and
friends to join us in
remembering those men and
women who have served our
country to bring peace and freedom for many people.
“Mass for Mothers” Friday 11th May
All our wonderful mums and grandmothers are invited to
attend our Parish School on Friday 11th May at 9.30am
at St Francis of Assisi Church, Maida Vale, and then
enjoy morning tea together.
May, the Month of Mary
May is the month dedicated to
Our Lady. The Blessed Virgin
Mary is the Mother of the
Church and therefore the
example, as well as the guide
and inspiration, of all who seek
to follow Jesus’ teachings.
Throughout the school we will
be saying the Rosary
throughout the month.
We look forward to the special arrival of the Statue of
Mary from the Parish on Monday 7th May. The
procession will start outside the School Office, move
along the pathway to the Sacred Space in the Library.
As Mary is installed with honour, we will pray the Rosary.
All family and friends are welcome to join with us.

First Eucharist Parent & Child Workshop!
KINDY NEWS
Welcome to Term 2. I hope you all managed a relaxing
holiday! Thank you to all parents for making sure your
child brought back their hat and towel and for making sure
your child has a homework folder for this term. We
welcome Mrs Tormay to our classroom for the next 3
weeks as Mrs Marchetti is taking some Long Service
Leave.
Reading Books will come home on Monday. Please take
the time to read the note which explains how these books
will work and don’t hesitate to come and see us if you
have any questions. Library Books also are returned/
brought home on Mondays. We understand this may be
a little confusing but hoping that you can help your child
keep them in their separate folder/bag as well as help
them return them in the appropriate tub.
Please, also, remember to check the take home folders at
home time. Important notes are placed in here as well as
other information. We found many ‘full’ folders at the end
of last term.
Yesterday we had some very cold weather hit us
unexpectedly. Please make sure your child always has a
jumper in their cubby or bag...just in case!
Next Thursday afternoon is our Mother’s Day Afternoon
Tea and we look forward to seeing you and ‘spoiling’ you.
If you can’t make it due to work commitments, please try
to arrange another adult to come in your place so your
child has a special someone to spend time with. For
safety reasons, no siblings are allowed.

SPORTS REMINDER
Students will need to wear full sports
uniform with representative polo on
Monday 7th May.
Please join us for our ANZAC Liturgy
Service tomorrow Friday the 4th May. It will
be held on the grassed area adjacent to the
undercover area. It will begin at 9:00am.
All welcome.
Welcome back to Term 2!
I thought I would kick off term 2 with these top 3 parenting tips:
1. Invest in one-on-one time with kids daily - By allowing 10-15 minutes per day of positive attention for your child, it will increase emotional connection and improve behaviour.
2. Get Serious about sleep! Cranky, irritable, head and stomach hurt are what you feel when you don’t get enough sleep. Remember a well-rested child is a well behaved child and can function better throughout the day, including school.
3. Everyone pitches in - Encourage your child to have ‘family contributions’ (not chores!) as this will bring your family closer together and teaches life skills.
The following information flyers are provided at the end of the newsletter: FREE: Parenting Workshop for Dad’s: bringing up great kids – commencing every Wednesday evening on the 13th of June for 6 weeks (concluding on the 18th July 2018). FREE: Parenting Program: Bringing Up Great Kids – commencing every Wednesday afternoon on the 16th May for 6 weeks (concluding on the 20th June 2018). Term 2 Timetable for Midland Women’s Health Care Place – accessible counselling, group therapy, exercise groups & more – ALL AT A LOW COST!

YEAR 5 NEWS
Year 5 have come back after the holidays refreshed and
rearing to go. We have been looking at different forms of
poetry and how poets create imagery. We have been
learning about alliteration, similes and personification.
Today we wrote beautiful haiku poetry on the theme of
Autumn and will use leaves that have collected from the
playground to decorate our published works.
Year 5 is responsible for school’s Anzac Day Liturgy, so
we hope that many family and friends will join us on
Friday 4th May to remember and honour all those who
have served in our military.
We have only a few more weeks to NAPLAN. Please
continue to work on activities that have been posted on
Studyladder.

YEAR 3 NEWS
It has been fantastic to see Year 3 students come back
from the break refreshed and ready to learn. This week
we are looking at ANZAC day; what symbols we have and
use for the ceremony, how we can celebrate it and, most
importantly, why we celebrate ANZAC Day. Students
loved hearing about how courageous our troops were
when they fought in Gallipoli and the true heroic spirit of
John Simpson and his donkey.
There are many students telling me they have been
practising NAPLAN questions and writing over the
holidays, which has been amazing! Please continue to
work on activities, questions and downloads on
Studyladder to assist with learning concepts that may
arise in NAPLAN.

2018 Faction Cross Country Carnival
Thursday 10th of May 2017
Matthew Gibney Catholic Primary School’s 2018 Faction Cross Country Carnival will take place on Thursday 10
th of May (Week 2.) All students from Years One through to Six will participate in the
event. The day’s programme is as follows:-
Juniors (Years 1 - 3) will begin at 9.15am. Seniors (Years 4 - 6) will begin at 11.15am.
It has been great to see so many students at training on Friday morning in preparation for our cross country carnival. The last training is on this Friday. In case of wet weather on the day your child may need to bring a spare jacket and towel. In extreme weather the event will be cancelled. Students are to wear their faction shirt to school. If your child is an asthmatic, please remind them about their appropriate medication.
Year 1 will complete half a lap of the oval; year 2 will complete one lap, year 3 and 4 complete one and a half laps and years 5 and 6 complete two laps. Students have been preparing for this during their PE lessons and before school training.
Assistance on the day would be greatly appreciated and, if you are able to do so, could you please meet me on the oval at 9.15am for juniors and 11.15am for seniors. This will be for track marshalling around the oval, particularly for the junior years as well as assisting at the start and finish line. Families are invited to come to cheer students along, it is always great to have parent spectators during our school sporting events to add to the atmosphere of the day.
Individual medal winners will be announced at the end of the junior and senior block, with the overall faction shield announced after lunch.
If you have any queries please don’t hesitate to see me.
Kind Regards Shannon Andersen
NESPRESSO RECYCLING
Every day, 55 million coffee pods are thrown away.
Plastic pods take hundreds of years to break down, clog
up landfill and release harmful methane gas along the
way. Some pods are made out of aluminium and while
this is an abundant resource, the creation of aluminium
is energy intensive so should be reused instead of
ending up in landfill. By 2012 Nespresso had sold more
than 27 billion coffee pods worldwide, enough to encircle
the equator 30 times – and that's just one company.
Savanah, a Year 6 student at Edney Primary School, has
set up a recycling box for used Nespresso coffee pods.
The box is located at Edney Primary School in the
undercover area.
