Evening Eucharistof the

Lord's Supper

Preparation for Holy Communionto be used in private prayer before the service begins:

Psalm 51 Miserere mei, Deus

1 Have mercy on me. 0 God, according to your steadfast love: according toyour abundant mercy blot out my transgressions,

2 Wash me thoroughly. from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!3 For 1 know my transgressions. and my sin is ever before me.4 Against you, you only, have 1 sinned and done what is evil in your

sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in yourjudgment.

5 Behold I was brought forth in iniquity and in sin did my mother con-ceive me.

6 Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdomin the secret heart.

7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall he clean: wash me, and I shall bewhiter than snow.

8 Let me hear joy and gladness: let the bones you have broken rejoice.9 Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.10 Create in me a clean heart O God, and renew a right spirit within me.11 Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.13 Then 1 will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you.14 Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God of my salvatio, and my

tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness.15 O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.16 For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will

not be pleased with a burnt offering.17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and contrite

heart, O God, you will not despise.18 Do good to Zion in your good pleasure; build up the walls of Jerusalem.19 then you will delight in right sacrifices, in burnt offerings and whole burnt

offerings; then bulls will be offered on your altar

The Liturgy of the Word

First Reading Exodus 12:1-4, 11-14 NRSV

Reader: A reading from the Book of the Exodus

The LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt: This monthshall mark for you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month ofthe year for you.Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth of this month theyare to take a lamb for each family, a lamb for each household. If a household is too small for a whole lamb, it shall join its closestneighbor in obtaining one; the lamb shall be divided in proportion to thenumber of people who eat of it.This is how you shall eat it: your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it hurriedly. It is the passo-ver of the LORD.For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike downevery firstborn in the land of Egypt, both human beings and animals; onall the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the LORD.The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live: when I seethe blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall destroy you when Istrike the land of Egypt. This day shall be a day of remembrance for you. You shall celebrate it as afestival to the LORD; throughout your generations you shall observe it asa perpetual ordinance.

(Pause)Reader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.

New Testament reading I Corinthians 11. 23-26 NRSVReader: A reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians: For I re-ceived from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus onthe night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my bodythat is for you. Do this in remembrance of me."In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, "This cup isthe new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in re-membrance of me."For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim theLord's death until he comes.

John 13:1-17, 31b-35. NRSVNow before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour hadcome to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved hisown who were in the world, he loved them to the end. The devil had al-ready put it into the heart of Judas son of Simon Iscariot to betray him.And during supper Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things intohis hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, got upfrom the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feetand to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. He came toSimon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?"Jesus answered, "You do not know now what I am doing, but later youwill understand." Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet." Jesusanswered, "Unless I wash you, you have no share with me." Simon Petersaid to him, "Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!"Jesus said to him, "One who has bathed does not need to wash, except forthe feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you."For he knew who was to betray him for this reason he said, "Not all ofyou are clean."After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had returned tothe table, he said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? Youcall me Teacher and Lord--and you are right, for that is what I am. So if I,your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to washone another's feet. For I have set you an example that you also should doas I have done to you.

Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:

Send the Holy Spirit on your peopleand gather into one in your kingdomall who share this one bread and one cup,so that we, in the company of Mary, the virgin mother of God,with [the apostles, the martyrs, St Wilfrid and] all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord;by whom, and with whom, and in whom,in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever.

COMMUNION ANTIPHON

Priest: This body will be given for you. This is the cup of the new cov-enant in my blood; whenever you receive them, do so in remembrance ofme.

THE COMMUNIONCommunion Hymn:

Anthem:During communion, the sidespersons light the candles on the Altar of Re-

pose. After the distribution of communion, the ciborium with hosts forGood Friday is left on the Altar covered by a simple white veil, and Mass

concludes with the prayer after communion.Priest: Let us pray.Almighty God, we receive new lifefrom the supper your Son gave us in this world.May we find full contentmentin the meal we hope to sharein your eternal kingdom. All: Amen

TRANSFER OF THE HOLY EUCHARISTFollowing the Prayer after Communion, the priest goes to the sedilia,

takes off the Chasuble and put on the Cope. He goes to the front (peoplesside) of the altar, and imposes incense (without a blessing), kneels and

censes the Holy Eucharist on the Altar. The censer is returned to the serv-ers. Then the servers place the Humeral Veil on the Priest, who rises, andtakes the veiled ciborium in the folds of the humeral veil, turns to face the

people, and the organ commences the hymn:

Hymn 353 'Now my tongue, the mystery telling..'

This hymn is played and sung VERY SLOWLY as the procession movesVERY SLOWLY down the center aisle, turning right, and down the northaisle to the Altar of Repose. The order of the procession is: Thurifer, Aco-lytes with lit candles, Crucifer, assistant minister, Priest carrying the Ho-

ly Eucharist. The last two verses (5 & 6) of the hymn are NOT SUNGuntil the priest has placed the Holy Eucharist Ciborium on the Altar ofRepose. After the first two lines of verse 5 ('Therefore we before

15

him.....sacrament revere:'), during which the priest, servers and congrega-tion kneeling, bow profoundly, the priest then censes the Sacrament.

At the end of verse 6, priest and servers rise, the servers candles are extin-guished, and the altar party retreat in disordered haste and without ceremo-ny, to the sacristy, along the front of the High Altar (without acknowledgingit), to the sacristy (as many fled deserting Jesus after his arrest). The priestremoves white vestments, puts on a purple stole, for the stripping of the Al-tars and removal of all movable objects of devotion in the Church. (Thosewhich cannot be removed should be veiled either now or before the Good

Friday Liturgy).During the Stripping of the Altars, the following psalm is said: Psalm 22: 1-19

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far fromhelping me, from the words of my groaning?O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer; and by night, but find norest.Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel.In you our ancestors trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them.To you they cried, and were saved; in you they trusted, and were not put toshame.But I am a worm, and not human; scorned by others, and despised by thepeople.All who see me mock at me; they make mouths at me, they shake theirheads;

"Commit your cause to the LORD; let him deliver-- let him rescue the one inwhom he delights!"Yet it was you who took me from the womb; you kept me safe on my moth-er's breast. On you I was cast from my birth, and since my mother bore me you havebeen my God.Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to helpMany bulls encircle me, strong bulls of Bashan surround me;they open wide their mouths at me, like a ravening and roaring lion.

16

I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart islike wax; it is melted within my breast; My mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws;you lay me in the dust of death. For dogs are all around me; a company of evildoers encircles me. Myhands and feet have shriveled;I can count all my bones. They stare and gloat over me;they divide my clothes among themselves, and for my clothing they castlots. But you, O LORD, do not be far away! O my help, come quickly to myaid!

(The Choir now depart swiftly and in silence)

ALL are encouraged to stay for a period of silent adoration in theChapel, with those returning at their agreed times to watch with ourLord until midnight. All others leaving the Church, please do so in

absolute silence. Thank you.
