The Word of God

Opening Acclamation

Presider: Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins. People: His mercy endures for ever. Kyrie Spoken aloud by all.

Lord, have mercy Christ have mercy Lord, have mercy on us.

The Prayer for the Day Prayer Book Page 274

Presider: Almighty Father, whose dear Son, on the night before he suffered, instituted the Sacrament of his Body and Blood: Mercifully grant that we may receive it thankfully in remembrance of Jesus Christ our Lord, who in these holy mysteries gives us a pledge of eternal life; and who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The First Lesson

Reader: A reading from Exodus 12:1-14a The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt: This month shall mark for you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year for you. Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth of this month they are to take a lamb for each family, a lamb for each household. If a household is too small for a whole lamb, it shall join its closest neighbor in obtaining one; the lamb shall be divided in proportion to the number of people who eat of it. [Your lamb shall be without blemish, a year-old male; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats. You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month; then the whole assembled congregation of Israel shall slaughter it at twilight. They shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. They shall eat the lamb that same night; they shall eat it roasted over the fire with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. Do not eat any of it raw or boiled in water, but roasted over the fire, with its head, legs, and inner organs. You shall let none of it remain until the morning; anything that remains until the morning you shall burn.] This is how you shall eat it: your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it hurriedly. It is the passover of the Lord. For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, both human

beings and animals; on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the Lord. The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live: when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. This day shall be a day of remembrance for you. You shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord; throughout your generations you shall observe it as a perpetual ordinance. People: Thanks be to God Song before the Gospel Thou, Who at Thy First Eucharist Didst Pray Hymn #315

Presider: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

People: Glory to you, Lord Christ The Gospel John 13:1-17, 31b-35

Now before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. The devil had already put it into the heart of Judas son of Simon Iscariot to betray him. And during supper Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. Then

he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus answered, “You do not know now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no share with me.” Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” Jesus said to him, “One who has bathed does not need to wash, except for the feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you.” For he knew who was to betray him; for this reason he said, “Not all of you are clean.”

After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had returned to the table, he said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord—and you are right, for that is what I am. So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. Very truly, I tell you, servants are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them. If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.

Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, `Where I am going, you cannot come.' I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."

Presider: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, Lord Christ The Message Rev. Hillary West

The Foot Washing

Presider: Fellow servants of our Lord Jesus Christ: On the night before his death, Jesus set an example for his disciples by washing their feet as an act of humble service. He taught that strength and growth in the life of the Kingdom of God come not by power, authority, or even miracle, but by such lowly service. As we are called to follow his example, we are invited to come forward, having shed our footwear, to kneel and wash the feet of another and/or, sit to have our feet washed. We come remembering Christ’s admonition that what will be done for us is also to be done by us for others, for “a servant is not greater than his master, nor is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.”

During the foot washing a slideshow of images of Maundy Thursday

from around the world will be livestreamed while the choir sings.

Please, at home, gather and as Jesus instructs, “you too must wash one another’s feet.”

Prayers of the People

Stand or kneel as you are able

Leader: Father, on this, the night he was betrayed, your Son Jesus Christ washed the feet of his disciples. We now commit ourselves to follow his example of love and service that we may, Loving Lord,…

All: Love one another.

Leader: On this night, Lord of all, your Son Jesus Christ prayed for his disciples to be one; that they will be holy in your truth. We pray for the mission and unity, loving God, of your Church, that we may, Loving Lord,…

All: Love one another.

Leader: On this night Lord God, your Son Jesus Christ, commanded his disciples to love, and suffered rejection himself. We pray for the rejected and unloved and remember, loving Lord, that Christ said to his beloved, if the world hates you, know that the world hated me first. We pray for those who are persecuted for their faith. Help us, Lord God, to be mindful of one another as we turn in faithful devotion to you that we may…

All: Love one another.

All: Most merciful Lord, your love compels us to come in. Our hands were unclean, our hearts were unprepared; we were not fit even to eat the crumbs from under your table. But you, Lord, are the God of our salvation, and share your bread with sinners. So cleanse and feed us with the precious body and blood of your Son, that he may live in us and we in him; and that we, with the whole company of Christ, may sit and eat in your kingdom. Amen.

Silence

Confession and Absolution

Presider: Our Lord Jesus Christ says, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” (John 14:15) All: Unless I wash you, you have no share with me. (John 13:8) Presider: Let us confess to almighty God our sins against his love, and ask him to cleanse us. Silence may be kept.

Father eternal, giver of light and grace, we have sinned against you and against our neighbor, in what we have thought, in what we have said and done, through ignorance, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We have wounded your love, and marred your image in us. We are sorry and ashamed, and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past; and lead us out from darkness to walk as children of the light. Amen. The Presider stands and says

Almighty God, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Peace

All stand.

Presider: The peace of the Lord be always with you.

People: And also with you.

The people are invited to greet one another in the name of the Lord.

Please sit.

The Holy Communion

Eucharistic Prayer A Prayer Book Page 361

Presider: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you.

Presider: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord.

Presider: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give God thanks and praise.

Presider: It is indeed right and good to give you thanks and praise, almighty God and everlasting Father, through Jesus Christ your Son. For in these forty days you lead us into the desert of repentance that through a pilgrimage of prayer and discipline we may grow in grace and learn to be your people once again. Through fasting, prayer and acts of service you bring us back to your generous heart. Through study of your holy word you open our eyes to your presence in the world and free our hands to be a people of strength and courage, welcoming all into the radiant splendor of your love. As we prepare to celebrate the Easter feast with joyful hearts and minds, we bless you for your mercy and join with saints and angels for ever praising you and saying:

Sanctus Spoken

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power of might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest. Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

Page 16: Maundy Thursday April 9, 2020 7:00 pm - Epiphany Episcopal …€¦ · I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one

14

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Presider and People

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

The Presider continues

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.

And now, as our savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray;

People and Presider

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread The Presider breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept.

Presider: Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;

People: Therefore, let us keep the feast.

Currently, as a faithful community in solidarity with one another as the body of Christ, we will fast from the taking of Holy Communion and engage in Spiritual Communion in response to maintaining healthy social distance, and in honoring the integrity of the sacrament. In observance of the sacrament, each pray the following prayer from St. Alphonsus Liguori:

ALL: My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Prayers for Silent Reflection

You taught us, Lord, that the greatest love one can show is to lay down one’s life for his friends. But your love was greater still, because you laid down your life for your

enemies. It was while we were still enemies that you reconciled us to yourself by your death. What other love has ever been, or could ever be, like yours? You

suffered unjustly for the sake of the unjust. You died at the hands of sinners for the sake of the sinful. You became a slave to tyrants, to set the oppressed free. Amen.

Bernard of Clairvaux

Good Jesus, my God and my all, be thou all to me, be thou all in me, that I may be all yours, and all your will mine. Take from me all which displeases you, or hinders your love in my, that I may deeply love you. Melt me with your love, that I may be

all love, and with my whole being love you. Amen. Adapted from E.B. Pusey

Lord Jesus Christ, in this sacred and solemn time

when we see again the depth and mystery of your redeeming love,

help us to follow where you go, to stop where you stumble,

to listen when you cry, to hurt as you suffer,

to bow our heads in sorrow as you die, so that, when you are raised to life again, we may share in your endless joy. Amen.

Adapted from “Celebrating God’s Presence”

The Serenity Prayer God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change

the things I can and wisdom to know the difference.
