Did you know that...

Portage APL helps almost

1000 animals each year?

We help supply pet food to

those in need?

We offer low cost spay and

neuter options for cats and

dogs?

All animals adopted are

altered, vaccinated, given flea

and worm preventative and

most are microchipped?

Imagine that it’s 90 degrees in July and you are in a hot car for almost 30 minutes with the

windows cracked. The temperature can reach well above 100 degrees and become deadly in a

matter of minutes. You can’t get out and there is no place to get out of the sun. That’s how Dusty

ended up at Portage APL.

A good Samaritan called police when they saw this 6 week old puppy in distress in a hot car in a

parking lot. After multiple attempts to locate an owner, the officer removed the puppy from the

car in order to save his life. The officer then asked if the APL could take this puppy into our care

since it had no place to go and needed help.

Back at the APL, he was given immediate care to make sure he was not in danger of heat

exhaustion. Unsure if he was a healthy or vaccinated puppy we placed him in our Isolation area.

Sadly for Dusty, within 24 hours of arrival he had to be rushed to the emergency vet to be

treated for Parvovirus. None of the other dogs in our shelter were ill so he must have already

been sick. This could cost thousands of dollars but we knew he deserved to be saved. So he

spent 5 days under 24 hour veterinary care and once he was passed the worst part, he was sent

into foster care to finish his recovery. He needed to be kept in foster care for 30 days to be sure

he was healthy and not contagious to other dogs.

Not only was poor Dusty pulled from a hot car, but he also endured a terrible life-threatening

virus. He is a survivor and it shows. After all he went through, he remained happy and loving.

Thousands of dollars later, this sweet boy is healthy, vaccinated, neutered and living a happy life

in a new and loving home. He also has a big brother to snuggle, play with and show him how to

be a dog. His new name is Max.

His story would not have been possible

without the quick action of the Portage

County Sheriff’s Department, Portage

APL staff or the life-saving donations we

receive each day.

Mission: Portage Animal Protective League is a private, non-profit organization, dedicated to the advancement of animal welfare and responsible pet ownership. In support of the mission: we shelter and find safe homes for injured, abused, surrendered and abandoned animals, uphold and enforce all animal cruelty laws, reduce pet overpopulation through spay/neuter programs and educate the community on the social responsibility associated with pet ownership.

Vision: We envision an educated and caring community that recognizes and respects the rights of animals to receive humane and compassionate treatment and actively supports efforts to ensure their welfare.

Sponsoring an animal’s cage is yet another way your

donation can be used. Being a cage or run sponsor is a

great way to visibly support the animals at Portage APL

until they find their next loving home. A special cat cage

or dog run “sponsor identity tag” is placed on a cage or

a run with your name, your family name, your pet’s

name or the name of a business or organization. Your

sponsorship will help defray costs to provide food, care

and comfort for up to one year.

Cage Sponsors are listed on Page 10.

Thanks for your support!

Annabel came to the APL during the hurricane season a year ago. The

APL helped an overcrowded shelter in Florida and poor Annabel has

been with us ever since. She is such a sweet girl. She loves to be pet

and enjoys attention. She likes to play and would be a wonderful pet.

She is about 4-5 years old, is up to date on vaccines and is spayed,

dewormed, microchipped and has a rabies vaccine. Please come in

and meet this brave girl. She has been through so much already. We

are excited that she will be able to live out her life in a happy,

permanent home.

I Found a FUR-EVER Home!

“I'm so happy to have the chance to have him as a companion! He's very sweet. Oh my goodness. I just

absolutely love him! Thank you all so much. He briefly allowed me to scratch the top of his head...then he

rolled over and I sang him a song...Paul Simon's "You Can Call me Al"

We are going to coexist wonderfully. My daughter was here yesterday, and he seemed to enjoy her. I

made it clear to her to move slowly and talk gently...she built a house for him and he got right in it! Lol! I

think maybe he just wanted to appease her.. He meows at birds and squirrels all day.

He seems content” - Audrie

Just me, Lady Bug (Vera), checking in... I completed my beginning level obedience classes, and won an

award: Most Brave! My intermediate classes start in 2 weeks, and Mama says that those will focus on the

necessary fundamentals (whatever that means) of being certified as a therapy dog. Mama says we're

going to get Therapy Dog International certified. It's fun, and I get to watch my new friends do all kinds of

things when their people tell them and help them... and then I get to do those things, too. Last Saturday,

we tried out the free agility class... I did what I could, but--seriously--that tunnel was just way too scary for

this fun-loving athlete! Maybe I'll try more agility stuff next summer!

Hope you are all staying cool. It's fun lying in the sun, but only for a few minutes at a time... It is too hot for

hikes, even! Thank goodness my new floor is cool ceramic tile!

Wags and nuzzles, --Lady Bug (Vera)

Izzy is quite the sweet girl and we can’t figure out why no one has adopted her. Izzy was transferred from another shelter where she had been surrendered by her owner. She was used for breeding and had been passed from home to home. She was unwanted and they hoped we would have better luck. She arrived at the APL in June and is still waiting for her furever home. She is energetic, happy, wiggly and full of love. She enjoys walks and although she has a lot of energy, she also enjoys relaxing with someone she loves. Don’t miss out on this gem of a dog. She deserves the best life possible.

I Found a FUR-EVER Home!

Originally named Cory, now named Scout. He’s doing wonderful in my home, he

even wrestles around with my two dogs and sleeps right next to them every night! I

couldn’t ask for a better cat!

Shepherd’s Watch Planned Giving Society

Should you choose to include Portage APL in your estate plan, you become part of our Shepherd’s Watch Planned Giving Society. Shepherd’s Watch provides protection for our shelter and our mission over the long term. Portage APL is committed to responsible financial management and planning. Our Shepherd’s Watch Society helps us weather financial challenges so we can continue to serve the hundreds of animals who come through our doors each year. Our ability to feed the hungry, care for the sick and wounded, and comfort the abused is a direct result of both ongoing contributions and planned gifts.

There are so many ways you can create a lasting legacy that benefits the animals right in your own backyard.

• Wills • Life insurance policies • Retirement accounts • Gifts of property • Gifts of stock

Of course, you’ll want to discuss your options and what’s best for you with a personal legal or tax advisor, but we appreciate your keeping us in mind when doing your long-term financial planning. Thank you, on behalf of the animals, for your support…today and tomorrow.

Ellie is 2!!!!!! So glad we took the leap and rescued her. Two words to sum El up: sweet and patient. We just love her to pieces. Thank you PAPL!

Potato and Beans (formally Shale and Obsidian) are doing great. Actually pretty well behaved for babies, kitten proofed certain areas, but they listen well for almost 5 month olds :) they are great, they are loved, and at times...they are tired lol, here's them half asleep.

I wasn't expecting to adopt a cat that day, I just didn't feel a connection with any one in particular especially since the loss of my own furbaby was still raw. Once I heard about her story, then saw this beauty, I had to take her home. As you can see, she's right at home too. Our home is full again. There are many loving cats young and old who need a home, so please everyone, go on down to PAPL and make a kitty part of your family.

Spay and Neuter Services for Cats

Low cost spay and neuter services are a very important part of helping stop pet overpopulation and

unwanted animals entering shelters or being euthanized. At Portage APL, we work hard to do our part.

Although we don’t have our own clinic, we do host a mobile clinic that comes to our location to offer these

services. We use N.O.M.A.D. who offers a variety of services. Every animal adopted from the APL is spayed or neutered. Please call us to schedule an appointment. We offer one or two clinics each month. We

also sell Friends of Animals certificates (for cats and dogs) that can be used at many local veterinarians.

We also have humane traps that people can borrow to trap stray or feral cats to bring in to be spayed or

neutered.

Pricing: Female cats = $65.00 (includes pain relief injection) Male cats= $35.00

Additional services:

Rabies vaccine: $10.00

FVRCPC Vaccine: $10.00

Ear tip (feral cats): $10.00

Nail trim: $5.00

Revolution: $20.00 (flea, worm, ear mite, heartworm

preventative)

Please call our front desk for dates and information at

330-296-4022

Acme Fresh Market, Community Cash Back

You can make a difference to Portage APL just by saving your ACME receipts and sending them to us by January 11, 2019. Each year we raise hundreds of dollars solely from receipts you collect. Every penny counts to our homeless animals.

Purchase the select brands and save your receipts. It’s that simple. We have a collection box in our foyer, but if you don’t come to the shelter, you are welcome to mail them to us.

Check our website for full details on eligible purchases!

Hot Cars for Cool Critters - Thank You Ganley Chevy of Aurora!

Thank you to Ganley Chevy of Aurora for putting together the first annual Hot Cars for Cool Critters. This

event combined a car show and animals from Portage APL. Matt Tifft, the NASCAR driver was there to

sign autographs and judge the car show. What a great guy! A special APL dog named Sofie, who was

deaf, found her furever home. Ganley Chevy raised funds for the APL and even offered to pay medical bills

for animals who were adopted at the event.

Thank you to all the people who registered, donated, stopped by and helped to make this event a success.

We couldn’t be more grateful. We hope to do it again next year. What a great day!

We seem to have luck when it comes to weather! What started out the week as a nasty forecast ended up being a gorgeous day for golf. We literally missed the downpour later in the day, by minutes. It was warm, breezy and people were in good spirits.

The food was delicious, the beer was cold and the golf was fun, as always. If you were there, you met Kat (pictured), a sweet three month old puppy who had been neglected. She enjoyed the attention and her little tail wagged with excitement. She was happy to have a field trip to the golf course for an hour or two.

Thank you to our hardworking committee: Julie Cariglio, Jill Conard, Eric Decker, Nick

Leacoma, Robert Standardi, and Mark Yankovich. Thank you to all who donated, golfed,

sponsored and shared in the event.

We plan to be back again next year for our twelfth year to raise funds for Portage APL and

have a fun day of golf. We hope to see you there.

Why Leadership Circle is Important

As a private, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, we rely on the generosity of the community to

make our important work possible.

It costs more than $1,500 per day to operate our facility and care for almost a thousand animals

we rescue each year.

Each animal adopted is current on vaccines, checked for disease, spayed or neutered, and free

of fleas and worms. Portage APL is proud to do so much for so many.

Humane law enforcement is a daily necessity. Thousands of calls have been answered and so

many animals saved. It is our mission to uphold humane laws and help the victims start over.

Leadership Circle In 2010, Portage APL established Leadership Circle. Membership is granted to donors who provide

financial support to Portage APL by contributing $1,000 or more annually. Leadership Circle “Life Member”

status is granted when you reach the $5,000 mark.

Contributions from Leadership Circle members help nearly a thousand animals who come to the shelter

each year because they have been injured, abused, surrendered, or abandoned. These animals receive food,

shelter, and medical care for as long as needed until each adoptable animal finds a “forever home.”

Leadership Circle funds also support humane investigations. Reports of abandonment, cruelty, and neglect

reach into the thousands. Contributions are also used to educate the public about the responsibilities of pet

ownership and to offer low-cost spay and neuter clinics that help reduce pet overpopulation.
