A teammate and I were introduced to a project in which we had to create a three dimensional letter form. We had two restrictions, it had to be at least 2 feet tall and it had to be based on Clarendon Bold.

A survival kit is a package of basic tools and supplies prepared in advance as an aid to survival in a specific situation. Some survival kits have matches, or a space blanket, most likely a whole mess of bandages and stuff of that sort. Survival kits are usually pretty standard, this one is a bit different. I had a different situation in mind...

RESEARCH PHASE

Fabrics of Instability is a story written and designed by myself, it’s based on Lazarus Bearman, a patient of the Jewish Consumptives’ Relief Society. JCRS was a sanatorium in Lakewood, Colorado created to help cure those who were infected with tuberculosis in the early 1900’s. It is now the home of Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design.

The research phase of this project consisted of looking through thousands upon thousands of patients who had been a part of JCRS in the past. We then chose a patient and learned as much as we could about them based on old medical records, personal letters and so on. I chose Lazarus based on his paperwork. He seemed to be absolutely insane, I figured I could do some fun experimentation within the layout of the book that reinforced Lazarus’ personality.

WE BROUGHT PENTAX INTO THE MODERN MARKET

I worked in a team of five to help recreate the packaging department of Pentax. We focused on the idea of making Pentax appear as a more modernized company. For some time Pentax has been lost in the crowd and they’re now working on a comeback. We created this spec work to help reboot their company and worked with the 1st Movement to produce this project.

With this project we focused on every aspect of a business and then looked beyond generic business elements. What could make a custom furniture business special and unique? We paired our design with the individuality of his furniture design. We also went above and beyond standard business elements because he didn’t operate a standard furniture business.

One way to separate Alex from the rest of the furniture industry is to push a sale further than other businesses. What we did here was create a small gift bag for his customers. It includes felt feet ( they don’t want to damage their hardwood floors) as well as some coasters to project their investment. Sometimes it’s the little things in business that people remember.

We had to choose an issue in our society that we felt strongly enough about to write a thesis paper on and design a visual element. Ever since I was a kid I’ve always been bothered by people trying to shove their religion in my face. I don’t go around shoving non- religious beliefs in their faces. So, I decided to go with the idea of propaganda, and make their process of conversion seem absolutely absurd, it’s a piece to help prove a point while also generating a sense of humor.

MAX SHERMANI AM

I’m a designer that works toward innovative approaches to design. In my eyes design is a never ending experiment. It’s not entirely a practice in mathematics but an art form. I feel that some designers are wrapped up in this idea that design is limited to the rules we’re all taught and they’re afraid to break out of these “rules and regulations”. I was introduced to design through different forms of art. I began by doing illustrations and working an airbrushing job. I never saw it coming but I originally learned typographic basics while airbrushing and this training soon became the building blocks for my design career. Once introduced to the world of design I realized there was no stopping, there are too many possibilities and opportunities to push design as far as possible. I look beyond the generalized view of the world around me. I am Max Sherman.
