March 17th 2010, four Health Career Technology girls boarded the bus, and left for HOSA State leadership conference. It was hosted by the Lancaster Host along Rt. 30 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Sara Hart competed in Medical Terminology, Bethany Carper competed in Human Growth and Development, and Kiersha Keller competed in Medical Photography. Alesha Ratcliffe was our faithful delegate. We had a blast meeting other health-career-minded students, eating, swimming, and hanging out with our newly-made friends. March 18th was competition day. Mrs. Mattis and Mrs. Biever showered us with support and assured us that we were all winners even if we wouldn’t place. We cheered each other on, and entered our rooms for competition. Sara and Bethany competed by a written test, and Kiersha presented her photos and explained each one. Alesha was the busiest out of all of us. She ran from meeting to meeting and had to miss out on some of the fun things. We couldn’t have asked for a better delegate! March 19th was the last day of the conference. It was also awards day! We held our breath as Sara placed first in Medical Terminology. She also received a HOSA scholarship. Bethany and Kiersha both placed fifth in their areas. Our teachers were waiting with flowers and compliments. HOSA State leadership was a very rewarding time for all of us who

went, and we will remember it for a life time. We want to thank Mrs. Beiver and Mrs. Mattis for all their hard work, and for being fantastic leaders and teachers. As for National competition, Sara and Bethany are looking forward to flying to Disney. National competition is hosted by Disney in Orlando, Florida, this year.

“HOSA…From Simple Scrapes to Healing Hearts, HOSA’s Where the Healing Starts” was the theme for the 31st annual HOSA State Leadership Conference, which was held on March 17th, 18th and 19th at the Host Resort Conference Center in Lancaster, PA. With over 1100 students, advisors, guests and judges from across Pennsylvania, the state-wide conference provided opportunities for students to compete in over forty-five individual and team events, while networking and meeting new people who share an interest in the health care field. This year, a total of eighteen Allied Health Science (AHS) HOSA students represented the Lebanon County Career and Technology in eleven different competitive events. The different events, while allowing students to showcase their talents in the health care field, also provided opportunities for students to further develop their leadership, speaking, knowledge and organizational skills. According to Mrs. Janet Nelson, AHS instructor and HOSA advisor, “One of the benefits of HOSA is that it provides opportunities for students to develop employability skills that are so important for their future success. Time management, peer collaboration, and organization are all important components of the HOSA State Leadership Conference.” Preparation for the conference required much time and effort on the part of the students as they selected competitive areas of interest, reviewed competition guidelines, created displays, prepared materials and practiced through the use of pre-tests. According to Ashlynn Lefever, a junior from Palmyra, “This conference was an amazing experience for me. It was held with people that shared the same interests

as I did, and everyone was passionate about what they were doing.” And Heather Heilman, a senior from Annville Cleona, stated, “I’m glad that I attended the conference! I not only learned a lot, but I became closer friends with the people that also attended from our three sessions”. In addition to awarding medals, HOSA also awarded scholarship money to support students who are planning on furthering their education at the postsecondary level. Of the $80,000 that was available in the state of Pennsylvania, AHS students received $7,000 for postsecondary use. Best wishes to all competitors who will be attending the National Competition in Orlando, Florida, June 22-27!

With all their items prepared for competition, the AHS HOSA delegation poses prior to embarking for their exciting three days at the 31st HOSA State Leadership Conference.

As our HCT HOSA discussed all of our fundraising ideas, we decided to focus our attention on a fund that is close to LCCTC’s Heart. The unanimous decision was to raise money for the Rachel Estep Fund. The HCT class began raising money for this project by donating $2.00 per student every Friday, for one month for the privilege to “dress down.” In addition, we sponsored an Easter Basket raffle. The Easter basket was donated by Wertz Candies and the Health Career Technology instructors. For this, each Friday, we went around to classrooms selling raffle tickets for $1.00. In addition, the LCCTC BOS students made and donated several Easter buckets full of home made candy products for consolation prizes. The first drawn winner received an Easter Basket valued at $50.00, created by Wertz Candies in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. With these fundraisers, we are proud to donate $500.00 to the Rachel Estep Fund. Thank you for all who contributed in this process.

Health Careers Technology Raises Money for our LCCTC Family

Now that the nurse aide program is completed and the post secondary classes are near completion, Health Careers Technology is planning field trips to enhance lessons learned. During the month of May, HCT students will be visiting Washington, DC’s Arlington Cemetery, the Holocaust Museum and the National Institute of Health. Shortly after returning from Washington, DC, the class will be visiting an organic farm in Bernville. To enhance the latter experience, HCT has invited Mrs. Rachel Estep to the classroom to share her experience of incorporating an organic life style to assist her in beating her diagnosis of cancer.

LCCTC’s campus hosted several skills contests, including Culinary Arts, Commercial Baking, Food and Beverage Service, TV Production, and Building Maintenance Custodial. Nearly 70 students from across Pennsylvania participated in these events. In addition, Mr. Jeff Hirneisen and Mr. Josh Boettner served as state chairpersons for the Plumbing and Masonry competitions which were held at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center. In total, approximately 1100 of Pennsylvania’s best career and technical education students competed in over 90 contests. The state gold medalists are now eligible to participate in the SkillsUSA National Championships which will take place in Kansas City, Missouri in June.

On May 4, the CTC held a school-wide Kauffman’s Chicken Barbeque to support its student organizations. The money raised will help to offset expenses for students who are going to national competitions this summer and to provide start-up funds for next year’s CTSOs. The student organizations involved in this fundraiser are FCCLA, three chapters of AHS HOSA, HCT HOSA, the LCBA student chapter, and SkillsUSA.

This year LCCTC’s students sold 1050 chicken dinners that included ½ chicken, baked potato, and roll for $6.00. Many students assisted in this event: Culinary Arts students scrubbed and wrapped the potatoes, Pastry Arts students baked the potatoes and bagged the rolls, and students from Allied Health Sciences, Health Careers Technology, Child Care Services, the IU 13 BOS class, Cosmetology, and Culinary/Pastry

Arts helped staff the booth on the day of the sale. Despite the “iffy” weather forecast and the threat of angry-looking, dark storm clouds overhead, the sale was a complete success. By 6 PM every last chicken dinner was sold. Approximately $3334 was raised this year.

THADDEUS CAMPBELL

Recently the culinary and pastry students were treated to the culinary talents of Chef Thad Campbell. Thad a 1997 culinary graduate has gained experience at the Hotel Hershey, Virgin Island’s, London England, New York City and Wyoming. All of these experiences were on display as Chef Campbell took a mystery basket of ingredients and created a four course meal in less than two hours. Students were amazed by his talent and work

ethic as he created his dishes. The creamy soup Verde with precise vegetable cuts and his fresh made Lobster Ravioli looked as good as it tasted. The stuffed Chicken Leg entrée with a natural broth and apple ice with apple slice crisp made our taste buds explode. We are fortunate to have Chef Campbell living in our area and he always seems to find time to come back to his roots and share his talents with our students.

Culinary and Pastry Alumni

Special thanks to Thad for sharing

his creative dishes, work experience

and dedication to the Lebanon County CTC!
