Prayer Vigil…”Pagpaparangal Kay Maria” By: Lyn C. Laurito

The HFCC had its monthly Prayer Vigil last May 01, 2010, 8:30 p.m. at the 1st Floor of the Catholic Center. It normally starts with a rosary fol-lowed by an inspirational talk of the speaker for the night. After which the exposition of the Blessed Sacra-ment follows. A Holy Mass was celebrated in conclusion of the activ-ity which was participated by the HFCC volunteers and non -volunteers. An agape was held after the mass.

The speaker for that night was Bro. Don Belayo of Prayer Partners Foundation International. The theme o f B r o D o n ‘ s t a l k w a s ―Pagpaparangal Kay Maria‖ since the month of May celebrates Flores De Mayo honoring our Virgin Mother. Coinciding with the Prayer Vigil was the celebration of the Feast Day of St. Joseph the Worker (Labor Day).

On April 26 2010, a simple get to-

gether and dinner was given by the

HFCC volunteers to Ate Marlene at

the Filipino Catholic Center.

Ms. Marlene Lim, known to many

as Ate Marlene, served the commu-

nity for one year but she needs to go

back to the country to pursue an-

other path in her life. As Chairper-

son of the Committee on Women‘s

Issues, she has a sensible vision

which she would like to impart to

her fellow ―kababayans‖ especially

the women and children. She has an

innate belief that women are born

equal with men. For this, she was

openly advocating ―violence com-

mitted on women.‖

On behalf of the Hyewhadong Fili-

pino Catholic Community, we

would like to thank you for the time

and effort you spent with us. We

wish you all the best in your en-

deavors.

It was Friday night April 30, 2010

when the volunteers gathered to-

gether to celebrate the 45th birthday

of the beloved Chaplain of Hyewha-

dong Filipino Catholic Community,

Father Alvin B. Parantar, MSP. At

around 8:30, the rosary started, fol-

lowed by the thanksgiving mass

held at the 1st Floor of the Catholic

Center.

After the mass, foods were served

and shared. The celebration was

made possible through the prepara-

tion and cooperation of the volun-

teers. The gathering gave the volun-

teers a chance to share jokes, laugh-

ter, and chit-chats. It was an evening

of joy for everybody.

From our hearts, we wish you more

years to add to your life and good

health too. And we thank you for

being a dynamic Father to us, for

your inspiring homily that touches

our lives in many ways and for the

guidance. Thank you and Happy

Birthday Fr. Alvin!

The Lectors and Commentators Committee of the Hyehwadong Fili-pino Catholic Community organized a Public Speaking Seminar last April 24, 2010 at the Philippine Catholic Center. It was a whole day seminar that started at around 9:45 and ended at around 6:00 pm.

The participants were the Lectors and Commentators group of the HFCC who initiated the said seminar and joined by the Liturgical Ministry

of the El Shaddai Prayer Partners Foundation International.

The seminar was conducted by Prof. Emely Dicolen Abagat. Bro. Jyun Gonzales, the chairperson of the Lectors and Commentators commit-tee led the opening prayer.

The speaker started the seminar with a tongue twister exercise. It was a

yembro ang kanilang mga karapatan upang mamili ng mga lider na mamu-muno sa kanila sa loob ng tatlong taon. Samantala, sa ating bansa naman, tayo ay kasalukuyang naghihintay na maianunsiyo at maiproklama ang ating bagong halal na Presidente. Nabigyan tayo ng pagkakataon na mamili ng mga lider na mamumuno sa ating bayan. Hindi madali ang pumili ng tama at karapat-dapat na kandidato dahil maraming bagay ang dapat isaalang-alang. Bago ako magtungo sa Philippine Embassy, may natanggap akong men-sahe mula sa aking pamangkin na na-katulong sa akin sa aking pagpili ng kandidato. Isang mahalagang tanong ang nagbigay sa akin ng pagkakataong magnilay. Ito ay ang: ―Anong uri ang boto mo?‖ Ayon sa sanaysay na kanyang ibinahagi, mayroon daw dalawang uri ng boto: “boto ng konsensiya,” at ―boto ng dis-karte.” Ang ―boto ng konsensiya‖ ay ―para sa pinunong kinilatis mo, pinag-aralang maigi, pinaniniwalaan, at inaasahang may magagawa para sa ba-yan.‖ Ang ikalawang uri ay ang ―boto ng diskarte,‖ para sa ―kandidatong iboboto mo na lang para hindi manalo ang ayaw mo.‖ Bilang isang mamamayan na binigyan ng karapatan, ang ―boto ng konsensiya‖ ang siyang mas nararapat. Ito ay ang botong may pag-asa at umaasang may magandang kinabukasan ang bayan. Hindi man manalo ang iboboto mo, alam mong ikaw ay namili ayon sa kon-sensiya mo at malaya ka sa desisyong ito. Ito ang boto na nagbibigay ng dan-gal at dignidad sa iyo. Kung ang boto mo ay ―boto ng diskarte‖ wala kang karapatang magreklamo at manisi ng ibang tao dahil ikaw ay nag-padala sa takot lamang. Iyan ang mali-naw na indikasyon ng kawalan ng pa-gasa. Ikaw? Anong uri ang naging boto mo noong nakaraang eleksiyon sa Samba-yanan at sa National Elections?

The different parts of the globe had their own ways of commemorating Labor Day. According to the recent news, a lot of workers and laborers went out to the streets to express their senti-ments about better work conditions and higher wages. Sad to say, some of them ended up in violent riots and encounters with law enforce-ment officers. In the Philippines, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo announced she had ordered the labor secretary to speed up negotia-

Voluntary exit program launched for illegal aliens By Bae Ji-sook - The Korea Times Staff Reporter

The government will launch an incentive pro-

gram aimed at encouraging foreign workers

who overstayed their visa to leave the country

"voluntarily, " the Ministry of Justice said

Monday.

Under the program, those who exit will be

exempt from fines and will not be regulated on

a possible revisit to

the country.

The authorities are

aiming to reduce the

number of illegal

sojourners here ―

estimated at 180,000

― before the G-20

Summit slated for

November.

The program will run

from May 6 to September 31.

Employers who come clean with such workers

will also be granted exemptions from fines and

be given priority in recruiting substitute work-

ers.

The workers will have to report to immigration

offices at airports with their employer, passport

and flight ticket to confirm departure.

Apart from this campaign, immigration officers

and police will conduct a joint crackdown on

illegal foreign workers, who have mostly en-

tered Korea on an E-9 visa and stayed after

authorization expired. Those caught will be

fined and deported. Employers will be fined up

to 20 million won and be restricted from hiring

a replacement for three years.

178,163 foreigners

staying here without valid visas, about 15.1

March, only 5,226 have turned themselves into

the authorities, while 4,826 were caught and

deported.

Hourly wage rate : 4,110 won, daily wage

rate (on a 8-hour basis): 32,880 won

In the case of 40 hours per week (209 hours

per month) the monthly wage will amount

858,990 won.

In the case of 44 hours per week (226 hours

per month) the monthly wage will amount

928,990 won.

3. Target of application : every business or

workplace employing workers

Workers whose minimum wage can be re-

duced

Apprentices: his/her minimum wage may be

reduced as much as 10% up to 3 months

(hourly wage rate : 3,699 won)

Surveillance or intermittent workers (when

approved by Minister of Labor): Minimum

wage can be reduced as much as 20%

(hourly pay: 3,288 won).

Workers who are not applied the minimum

wage

A person who has remarkably low abilities

to work due to a mental or physical handi-

cap (when approved by the Minister of La-

bor).

An employee who works for the workplace

which employ only relatives living together

or domestic workers.

A sailor who is subject to the seamen law or

an owner of ship employing sailor.

4. Liability of the employer

Liable to pay above the minimum wage to

the employee.

An employer shall pay the workers at least

the minimum wage rate or more. And no

employer may lower the previous wage

level on the ground of the minimum wage.

If a labor contract provides for a wage that

is less than the minimum wage rate, it shall

be considered to stipulate that the same

wage as the minimum wage rate shall be

paid.

Obligation of notice of the minimum wage to

the worker

An employer shall inform the workers of

minimum wage rate, wages not included in

the minimum wage, effective date, and

workers being excluded from the minimum

wage Act.

5. In the cases of the following, a contractor

shall take responsibility for violating Mini-

mum Wage Act jointly with the subcontrac-

tor.

As for determining the unit labor cost lower

than the minimum wage at the time of the

signing of the contract;

As for lowering the unit labor cost to below

the minimum wage in the middle of the con-

tract period.


The community’s tearful send off for Ate Marlene.

HFCC held the general assembly last April 25,

2010 at around 3:30 pm at the Holy Spirit Mis-

sion House. It was attended by HFCC volun-

teers, PPFI members, and some church goers.

The program started with an Opening Prayer

led by Bro. Orly. Prof. Emely Dicolen-Abagat,

Chairman of Education Committee, facilitated

the said program. New volunteers were intro-

duced and welcomed by the community.

A short presentation of being a leader was ex-

plained by Dra Emely. Nomination and election

of officers followed. Sambayanan Edboard and

Staffers were chosen to be the Comelec while

some volunteers from other committees served

as watchers during the canvassing of votes.

The election on that day was only for President

and Secretary. According to the constitution,

the term of VP is 3 years and since the commu-

nity had the election a year and a half ago, Bro

Jimmy Villaflor will still continue to serve as

VP until his term ends.

The newly elected HFCC President and Secre-

tary were Bro. Edison T. Pinlac and Sis.

Let‘s know more about them.

Our President, Bro. Edi-

son T. Pinlac, is happily

married and has three (3)

sons. He was a graduate

of Bachelor of Science in

Civil Engineering in

1991. He started working

after finishing college.

He and his wife arrived

in Korea sometime in August 1995. They were

stationed in Daegu then later came to Seoul.

When they were in Seoul they looked for the

Church. His wife persuaded him to be a volun-

teer of the church since she‘s going back home

to the Philippines. Bro Edison decided to be a

volunteer in 1997 because he does not want to

be involved to different vices. He joined the

Steward Committee that lasted for a month. At

that time, he was in charge of counting the

people coming in and out of the church. He

thought to himself, he‘s not really attending the

Holy Mass at all. He was just there in the

church to count people. So he decided to be a

Sacristan. He served for 7 years and became a

leader for 5~6 years. Then he joined the Eucha-

ristic Committee and became a leader as well.

During his years of service to the community

he thought of changing something. He ran for

Vice President of the Council and won the elec-

tion. He wanted to make the community as one

family. He wanted every volunteer of different

committees know each other and serve the Lord

at the same time. He was very happy and satis-

fied during his term because his plans suc-

ceeded. Now, being the elected President of the

Community, he will still continue to be the

servant of the Lord. He just realized that we

were not born for ourselves alone but also for

others and for God. The Lord already had plans

for us and it is up to us to decide for our lives

but let us make sure that our decision will still

be for the good side. Let‘s follow the will of

God.

Marilyn C. Laurito, is

happily married and

blessed with 3 daugh-

ters and a son. She was

a graduate of Bachelor

of Science in Business

Management in 2007.

She arrived in Korea in

September 2007. She

was an active churchgoer even before she came

to Korea. She spent most of her time in the

church but never became a volunteer. Most of

her friends asked her to be a volunteer but she

never tried. The trials she experienced in her

life led her to the Lord. She felt that she can

forgive anyone this time. She depended on our

Lord. She became an HFCC volunteer in July

2008 and joined the Education Committee. She

also joined the Lectors and Commentators

Committee. She never misses a mass on Sun-

days and she always attends Novena on

Wednesdays and Vigil on First Saturdays of the

month. Last year, she was appointed as Secre-

tary by Fr. Alvin because Bro Allan Rodriguez,

her predecessor went back home. She willingly

ing paraan. Patuloy niya silang sinusubay-

bayan, kung kaya sila ay napalaki niyang

maayos at may takot sa Diyos. Ang kala-

yuan niya sa kanyang pamilya ay hindi

naging hadlang upang maipamulat niya sa

kanila ang tamang asal sa kapwa at higit na

takot sa Diyos.

traits of Mama Mary and how she lived her life, the reasons why we honor her. He said that the Virgin Mother lived with humility, purity, obe-dience, faith, and strength. In his brief but meaty discussion, he said that the Mother hum-bly and obediently followed the will of the Lord to become the Mother of Jesus Christ. Her strong faith to the Lord made her accept His will. Being the Mother of Jesus Christ she went through a lot of pains but her exceptional

strength made her overcome all of them. She, being the Mother of God sets a good example for all of us.

Bro. Don said that Mama Mary is ―nagdalang Diyos‖, because in her womb she carried Jesus Christ, not just an ordinary human being but our Lord. And he said that if we are like Mary ―nagdadalang Diyos,‖ we carry God inside our hearts we will not go wrong. For the Lord will always guide and protect us all the time. Just like the Virgin Mother, if we follow the will of

the Lord, we will live in peace and content-ment.

Bro. Don stressed that we should respect Mama Mary as our own mother too. Lastly, giving importance and honoring Mama Mary is one way of reciprocating her love for us. She is the instrument of the Lord to fulfill His promise to mankind, to save us from our sins, and with Jesus‘ resurrection we are redeemed to have a new life and be with Him in His Kingdom.

P anahon na naman, kay tulin talaga ng takbo ng mga araw. Muli ay ipagdiriwang at pi-

nagtutuunan natin ng pansin ang mga kahanga-hangang tungkulin at pambihirang katangian ng mga dakilang ina. Lalo na ang mga nangingi-bang-bayan na nakikipagsapalaran upang maghanap-buhay at matustusan ang mga pan-gangailangan ng kanyang pamilya.

Gaano nga ba kasaya o ano ang pakiramdam ng isang ina? Sapat na ba na matugunan niya ang pangangailangan ng pamilya at mabigyang layaw ang mga anak nito upang matawag si-yang mabuting ina?

Marahil ay maraming pamilya ang masaya sa araw na ito. Magkakasamang nagsasalo-salo sa hapag, namamasyal sa iba‘t ibang lugar o liwa-san at hawak-kamay na nag-aalab ang pag-mamahalan. Ngunit paano kung ang ina ay mag-isang itinataguyod ang kanyang mga anak? Hindi ba mas higit o dapat ring parangalan ang katulad nila sapagkat sa ipinamamalas nilang katapangan at katatagan sa pagsuong sa buhay?

Sadyang mahirap makibaka at itayo ang isang tahanan lalo na kung walang haligi, isang ama na palaging nakasalo ang kanyang mga kamay at malakas na bisig na handang magprotekta. Lubos nating ipagpugay ang mga inang katulad nila. Ang ginagawa nila ay napakahirap na

sitwasyon dahil kahit na sila ay nag-iisa sinisi-kap na magampanan pa rin ang pagiging magu-lang. Kinalimutan ang kanilang sarili upang maitaguyod ng maayos ang minamahal na su-pling. Kahanga-hangang tunay dahil sa abilidad at katalinuhang matugunan ang lahat ng mga ito. ―Huwag mong sayangin ang pagkakataong magkaroon ng matalino at mabait na asawa; h igi t pa sa g in to ang al indog niya.‖(Ecclesiastico 7:19)

Isang ina ang nagpupunyaging mabigyan ng magandang kinabukasan ang dalawa niyang anak kaya‘t sinikap niyang makarating dito sa Korea. Tiniis niya ang lungkot at sobra ang pagtitipid upang mabilis na makaipon kaagad at mabigyan ng magandang buhay ang mga anak. Napalaki ito ng maayos bagamat malayo sila sa isa‘t isa sa tulong at gabay ng Panginoon sa pamamagitan ng kanyang mga magulang.

Minsan ay nagkasakit ang kanyang bunsong anak at ito ay naospital. Sa laki ng gastusin ay halos maubos na ang kanyang ipon at mga naipundar hanggang sa siya ay magkautang. Pangarap niyang makabili sana ng sasakyan at mapaayos ang kanilang bahay. Subalit sa nan-gyari ay binalewala niya muna ang mga han-garin, maisalba lamang ang buhay ng kanyang anak. Nababagabag siya at hindi mapakali lalo

na kapag ang anak ay may k a r a m d a m a n . Halos ibigay na niya ang lahat kahit na im-posible kung ito ang magkapag-bibigay kasiyahan sa kanyang su-pling.

Bakit hindi mati-tiis ng isang ina ang kanyang anak? Bakit ka-pag nasasaktan ang anak ay nasusugatan din ang puso ng isang ina? Bakit hindi rin ma-tawaran o mas higit pang nasisiyahan ang ina kapag nagkakamit ito ng karangalan at nagtata-gumpay ang anak? Kung minsan mas nauuna pa na magpasalamat ang ina kung sa sandaling nagawan ng mabuting bagay ang kanyang anak. Masasabing tila misteryo ang nag-uugnay sa ina at anak, subalit isa lamang ang tiyak, dahil sa malaking pag-ibig na nangingibabaw sa puso ng isang mapagkalingang ina. ―Mahirap makakita ng mabuting asawa, higit pa sa mamahaling alahas ang kanyang ha-laga‖ (Kawikaan 31:10) Happy Mothers day…!

I watched a story of a successful career woman whose 16 year old daughter got pregnant. She never failed to teach her daughter the values in life. Ironically, she forced her daughter to abort the baby because of shame. In the hospital, just before the abortion, the lady doctor intimately asked her what would be her decision regard-less of her Mom‘s opinion. She decided to keep the baby and walked out of the room. Her Mom got so mad and pulled her to another room where another woman was delivering a new born baby. They were stunned at what they saw especially when the baby started to cry. Her mom left that room only to realize how wrong she was.

A mother wanted her daughter to have an abor-tion and another mom was excited to see her new born. The issue is not that I‘m pro or against teen age pregnancy, but a mistake can never be corrected with another mistake. In-deed, being a mom is not easy. Delivering him in the world doesn‘t end there. Big responsibil-ity awaits, he needs to stand tall and firm. It will be forever part of his life. A mother needs to give up things for the benefit of her child.

Let me share with you my friend‘s journey of being a mom. She‘s the youngest of seven sib-lings. She‘s 33 years old smart, fine young lady

from Nueva Ecija whose beauty shows what‘s in her heart.

Just by looking at her, you won‘t realize that she had her own agony in her childhood days. She needed to be away from her family and stayed with her relatives to finish her school. She was treated like a house helper but she didn‘t mind. Although she was hurting inside, she kept it all to herself. All she had in mind was to follow her mom and pursue her dream.

It was 1996 when she had a chance to become an exchange student in Korea and went back home after the program. She was delighted of her experience, so she decided to go back last 2000 and left her boyfriend in the Philippines. She was courted by many but none of them won her heart. Temptations and vices were around her but being educated in a Catholic school, she found herself serving God through El Shaddai Prayer Partners Community where she joined as a choir member. Her experience in childhood drove her to succeed in life. She returned home and got married with her long time sweetheart. They both came here to work and to serve the community as well. She got pregnant and they painfully decided to send her daughter back home. They worked hard to-

gether and were able to put up some computer business. One day, they realized that they‘re not getting any younger as well as their daughter. They were able to invite their daughter to Ko-rea but it was only for 3 months. They never failed to communicate with their daughter but it‘s their presence that matters most especially to her. Maybe they could earn money and buy a house but not a chance of having a home. It was last year when her husband went back home and allowed her to stay for another year. This time, they had to make a crucial decision - she will be going home by the end of May.

I had a chance to ask her by heart if she has no regrets of her decision. And she shared with me this passage from the bible which she holds since childhood…‖I am with you ‗till the end of time…be not afraid‖. She went through toughed times of her life and she survived. She might be losing tons of wons by going home, but not a chance of losing her family.

A mother is like a diamond, that when you look through their heart you can prove how genuine and authentic they could be. To all the Moms, Mamas, Mommys, Inays or Nanays out there…Happy Mothers day…

CATHOLIC FAITH: - By Russell L. Ford

A mother is one of God‘s most special crea-

tures. In her is carried the seed of life. In

the depths of the mother‘s body—and in some

sense in her soul—the child takes shape and

grows. Although the mother has never seen or

held her child, she loves him deeply. She will

talk to him, contemplate him, make plans for

him, and begin to hope for his future. When it

is time for the child to pass from his mother‘s

deepest and warmest protection, it is an agoniz-

ing experience for the mother. Once the child is

born the mother loves and nurtures him a new

way, and she shares him now in a special way

with his father.

When Jesus established his kingdom on earth,

the Church, he gave us what is supernatural

through natural means. Spiritual birth is given

us with ordinary water. Confirmation is con-

ferred with oil and a loving embrace from our

priestly father‘s hands. The justice and mercy

of a good parent to an errant child is shown

through words of forgiveness from the father in

penance. The food that sustains our souls in the

Eucharist begins as ordinary bread and wine

that is transformed in substance to the body,

blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus Christ.

Whether our special vocation in life is direct

and committed service to God through the ordi-

nation—the most sublime of vocations—or

matrimony or religious vows, we embark on

them with the tender blessings of a father. And

when we are prepared to depart this life, we do

so again at the hands of a father who uses ordi-

nary oil that another father has lovingly

blessed. All of what Christ gives us is both

supernatural and natural, but perhaps his great-

est gift is the Church itself.

Many Catholics grow up hearing the Catholic

Church called Holy Mother Church. Many

habitually refer to her by that name. I certainly

do. But how many of us give conscious thought

to that? Do we realize how true it is that the

Church is our mother? For nearly fourteen

years I have been permitted the privilege of

evangelizing fellow prisoners as well as people

in the free world whom I‘ve never met except

through correspondence. Watching the process

of conversion for hundreds of souls has given

me a great appreciation for how Holy Mother

Church truly is the mother of us all.

In Holy Mother Church is the seed of spiritual

life, given to her when Christ breathed on his

apostles on Easter Sunday night, and through

his commission to spread the gospel throughout

the world. Think of each soul—regardless of

race, color, intelligence level, or age—as a seed

in the womb of Mother Church. When we do

our job of sharing the faith, and those seeds are

fertilized with tremendous actual graces (as a

person accepts the faith), the seed begins as a

new life, and the formation of the new child

commences.

This is done through catechetical formation.

During this period, although the developing

child has not yet been born through baptism,

Mother Church deeply loves the child. Then,

after months of formation in Holy Mother‘s

spiritual womb, as it were, the child is born

through water and spirit. Holy Mother Church

loves this child as surely as a natural mother

loves the child who comes from her own

womb.

It is the development of the child in Mother

Church‘s spiritual womb that most fascinates

me. Before a child can live independent of—yet

desperately dependent on—its mother, it must

grow and develop for months in her womb. The

same is true of the convert to Catholicism. It is

the wisdom of Holy Mother Church that de-

mands this.

Most of the souls with whom I deal have had a

least exposure to, if not participation in, some

form of Christianity, mostly Fundamentalism.

When the seed is fertilized with grace, when the

person decides to convert, he often asks what

he must do to join the Church. "Do I talk to the

priest and tell him to make me a Catholic?" "Do

I got forward at service?" Some will even sim-

ply begin telling others they are Catholic. It is

their exposure to other Christian religions that

make them think this way. At most non-

Catholic Christian services, a fellow can simply

make a public commitment and he‘s in. They

are often surprised when I tell them the wisdom

of Mother Church will not allow that sort of

"joining up."

When a person joins many Protestant groups,

his membership is instantaneous. Then he is

taught what to believe and what is expected of

him. That is tantamount to extracting a newly

formed zygote from its mother‘s womb and

expecting it to live independently of its

mother‘s body. That is an impossibility; the

zygote will die.

When I became a Baptist in 1973, I knew abso-

lutely nothing of Christianity. Those good Bap-

tist people began to teach me what I was sup-

posed to believe. The problem arose when I

discovered that what I was being taught did not

conform to what I was learning through Scrip-

ture or history. The zygote died; I became an

agnostic.

The wisdom of Mother Church demands a ges-

tation period for development and formation. A

careful reading of Peter‘s sermon in Acts 2

makes it obvious that Luke was not necessarily

quoting verbatim a sermon of the first pontiff,

but rather hitting the highlights of Christ‘s great

catechism lesson at the birth of the Church.

Peter was speaking to Jews. Therefore, there

was no need for catechetical formation per se.

The Jews were already formed essentially in

liturgy, morality, and spirituality. What they

needed was to learn that the old covenant had

been fulfilled by the new and everlasting cove-

nant. It was not until Mother Church began to

have Gentile children that we saw the advent of

catechetical formation much as we have it to-

day.

When I was a Baptist, the zygote died. As a

Catholic, I was allowed to gestate in the spiri-

tual womb of Mother Church. Thanks to her

wisdom in requiring that, I am still and will

ever be a Catholic. Just like any postpartum

child, I have grown and learned and been more

greatly developed since having grown enough

in Mother Church‘s spiritual womb to live inde-

pendent of—yet desperately dependent on—

her.

After having taught the catechism evangelisti-

cally to many hundreds of souls, I long ago

determined that the most important thing to

teach a catechumen is the ninth article of the

Creed. The ninth article states our belief in the

holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints.

All of Christianity, whether Catholic or non-

Catholic, hinges upon whether that article is

true.

If we cannot definitively prove that the God-

man did not leave us orphans, that he gave us a

Mother Church to love and nurture us, then all

of Christianity crumbles. How that is to be

taught and what is to be most forcefully ad-

dressed is material for a future article. In the

meantime, suffice it to say that the wisdom of

holy Mother Church does indeed give us life

through months of gestation after we have re-

ceived the graces of our Father.

There is but one other point to address. When a

mother gives birth, the child is passing from

one place of existence to another. The mother

groans and experiences great pain, yet she is

filled with joy. When a son or daughter of the

Church ends this pilgrimage on earth, all of

Mother Church groans and mourns the painful

loss. However, it is a joyful and hopeful mourn-

ing, just as the pangs of birth in a human

mother.

Why? Because our Mother is not limited to

existence on this mortal plane. She also exists

with her suffering children in purgatory and her

perfectly fulfilled children in heaven. In either

case, Mother Church‘s joy hails from being

able to share her child in a very special way

with the Father of us all.

Nagkuwento ang manilenyo kong kaibigan na

nakasubok makipila sa ligawan sa probinsiya

ng kanyang ama sa Iloilo. Ang naisip niyang

pinakamabisang paraan upang madaling ma-

kuha ang atensiyon ng isang dalaga ay makapag

-alay ng mamahaling bulaklak (binili sa flower-

shop) saka sinabing ―pinitas sa kanilang har-

din‖. Kilala ng dilag ang kanilang pamilya,

alam din niya na walang tanim sa hardin nila ng

ganoong uri ng bulaklak sapagkat madalas

siyang nasa baryo nila dahil malapit lamang

ang bahay ng kaibigan niya dito at nadaraanan

pa… samakatuwid nangbobola!

Hindi naglaon naging masidhi at nabatid niyang

sinsero ang kaibigan ko sa kanya. Sa katagalan

nahulog din ang loob ng dilag, pinatawad at

nilimot niya ang lahat ng hindi maganda sa

nakaraan hanggang sa sila ay naging magkasin-

tahan.

May pinatutupad na batas ang aking ama sa

aming tahanan noong kami ay mga bata pa.

Kapag siya ay sumiyok ibig sabihin kailangan

kaagad umuwi kaming lahat na magkakapatid

sa bahay, ayaw niya ng pabagal-bagal.

Minsan sumipol siya ng napakalakas at maba-

bakas sa kanyang mukha ang galit. Narinig din

ito ng bunso kong kapatid na babae, palibhasa

bata pa, maliliit kung humakbang kaya naman

mabagal siyang lumakad (bibo at maabilidad

ang kapatid kong ito). Upang hindi mapagalitan

hinati niya sa dalawang parte ang kinakain na

―chewing gum‖ at ipinasok sa kaniyang tainga,

saka patay malisyang dumaan sa harap ng am-

ing ama. Nagalit ang aming ama dahil sa tila

binalewala siya nito, kaya tinanong ng

―Binibini hindi mo ba narinig ang pagtawag

ko?‖ Tinanggal niya ang nakapasak sa kanyang

tainga, saka nalaman ng aming ama na may

nakabara pala sa pandinig ng bunso kong ka-

patid. Humagalpak sa katatawa si ama dahil sa

pangyayari, dagling napawi ang kanyang

galit… mula noon nagbago na ang pagtingin sa

amin, naging mas masaya na kami dahil ayaw

na niyang maulit na maisahan siya ng bunso

niyang anak.

Matutuklasan ang tunay na pagpapatawad ka-

pag ganap na kumikilala kay Kristo. Sinasabing

ang Jerusalem ay banal na lugar sapagkat dito

nagmula ang Mesias. Hindi na natin kailangan

pa na makarating sa bansang Israel upang

madama ang presensiya Niya. Para sa akin ang

Jerusalem ay nasa ating puso, hayaan mong

isuko ang lahat sa Kanya upang maintindihan

ang nais ipaabot ng akdang ito. Ang pagpa-

patawad ay isang regalo o biyaya na galing sa

Panginoon.

Hindi lahat ay nakatatanggap ng ganitong re-

galo. Marami ang nagpapatawad na hindi taos

sa kanilang puso. Makikitang sila ay may

pananampalataya sapagkat aktibo sa ibang mga

gawaing makalangit subalit pinabubulaanan

naman ng mga gawa.

Sa madaling salita isa pa ring kasalanan! Sa-

sabihin natin sa ating kapwa na ―Pinapatawad

na kita ngunit ayaw ko ng makita, makasama o

maging kaibigan ka‖ ito ay isang huwad na

pagpapatawad na nakabase lamang sa tao.

Noong si Magdalena (ang babaeng nakiapid) ay

nagkasala, pinatawad at nakisalamuha pa rin

ang Panginoon sa kabila ng kanyang kasalanan.

Si Saulo (taga-usig ng mga sumasampalataya

kay Jesus) o Apostol San Pablo ay mamamatay-

tao, pinatawad, kinaibigan at hinirang ni Kristo

bilang isa sa Kanyang mga alagad upang ma-

hayag ang kanyang kabutihan. Kapag nag-

Kung hindi magagawang magpatawad ng taos

sa iyong puso maaring lamunin ng galit at

paulit-ulit na pagkapoot. Ang galit ay isang

lason sa ating puso upang hindi mamayani ang

pag-ibig sa kapwa. Kung hindi magagawang

magpatawad ng totoo, sa bandang huli ikaw din

ang babalikan nito. Mawawalan ng halaga ang

lahat ng pagpapagal dahil may dalahin pa rin na

hindi maiwan, maliit man o malaki, ito ay dala-

hin pa rin.

bag sa amin, lilimutin mo ang mga pagkakasala

namin at ihahagis sa kalaliman ng dagat.‖ Ang

tunay na pagpapatawad ay maihahalintulad sa

luha.

Hindi ba kapag nagtatalop tayo ng sibuyas ay

napapaluha tayo dahil sa hapding dulot nito?

Iba naman doon sa may dinaramdam o nasa

sitwasyon ng kalungkutan at kabiguan lalo na

sa pag-ibig. Ang luha ay isang ―toxic‖ sa ating

katawan na kapag pinigilang pumatak sa mata o

hindi inilalabas ang sama ng loob lalo lamang

mabigat sa dibdib. Subalit kapag hinayaang

bumuhos ang luha sa pag-iyak hindi ba ang

kasunod noon ay maginhawa na sa pakiram-

dam?

Ganyan din ang tunay pagpapatawad makaga-

galaw ka ng maayos sapagkat wala na ang

mabigat na pasanin sa puso. Malayang malaya

na sa pagkakabilanggo mula sa isang seldang

bunga ng maling paratang na kagagawan ng

ilan. ―…….Sapagkat patatawarin ko sila sa

kanilang maling gawain at

hindi ko na gugunitain pa ang

Filipinos in South Korea chose Noynoy Aquino as President and Mar Roxas as Vice President in the recently held national elections. A total of 1,298 out of 10,921 registered voters exercised their right of suffrage. Out of the 1,298 casted votes, Noynoy got 651 votes while Roxas got 665 votes.

Before the counting began, the Philippine Embassy officials in Seoul tore the more than 9,000 unused ballots in compliance with the COMELEC policy. Three precincts, manned by Embassy staff and officials were formed to count the votes. After all the preliminaries, the counting ensued at 12:00 midnight. The counting continued for almost 24 hours with the poll watchers making sure that the counting of votes were done correctly and accurately.

South Korea market r ipe for Mindanao fruits , aquaculture

Davao City (21 April) -- South Korea, already one of Mindanao's largest export markets for high-value fresh and processed fruit, offers still more opportunities for Mindanao producers eager to expand into global markets.

This was among the findings of a one-day re-connaissance of retail outlets in the capital city of Seoul, conducted by USAID's Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program in part-nership with the Department of Agriculture (DA).

South Korea, which imports about 70 percent of the food consumed by its 48 million citizens, is one of the most rapidly-expanding markets in Asia for fresh and processed fruits and fruit juices. The market is also characterized by robust consumer demand for seafood products.

"Koreans have shown a growing preference for health foods, including processed organic prod-ucts and specialty fresh fruits," pointed out a member of the reconnaissance team. "There are market niches here that can be filled by Min-danao producers."

South Korea has highly efficient food distribu-tion and logistics systems, and many of its big-gest retail chains and distributors have outlets in other countries.

The spot check conducted by the GEM Pro-gram and the DA in five retail outlets revealed that various food items already being sold in South Korea, or with strong market potential, can be sourced from Mindanao.

These retail outlets included branches of lead-

ing department chains Hyundai and Lotte, as well as a Filipino "Sunday market" in Seoul.

South Korea, a large consumer of seafood prod-ucts, is among the top buyers of high-value fresh seafood from Mindanao, accounting for 94 percent of the region's total direct exports of abalone in 2008.

The retail stores and the Sunday market visited by the reconnaissance team carried frozen ban-gus (milkfish) and canned sardines from Zam-boanga.

Some processed fruit items?such as banana chips?were readily found in these outlets, but Philippine dried mango was harder to find. Mindanao direct exports of dried mango to Korea totalled only two metric tons in 2008.

However, certified organic dried mango from the USA was being sold in Hyundai Depart-ment Store, the leading high-end retail chain, for approximately $135 per kilo, about five times the price of the Philippine dried mango.

At Lotte Mart, fresh cavendish bananas dis-played stickers indicating that they had been grown in North Cotabato. Señorita bananas were also available at about $7.50 a kilo, al-most double the price of the cavendish variety.

Most of the fresh mango and pineapple found in the stores were from Thailand or the Philip-pines. The Thai fruits were slightly more ex-pensive, although the ones spotted by the re-connaissance team were not being sold in the same outlets as the Philippine fruits.

There also appears to be strong potential for frozen fruit. The GEM Program, which is as-sisting Mindanao producers to expand their market reach in South Korea, said that frozen mango and banana were items which drew significant interest from buyers during last year's Seoul Food and Hotel expo.

The Filipino stall market held every Sunday at Hae Hwa Dong, is more than a source of long-ganisa and tocino for Pinoy residents looking for a taste of home.

The market is seen by traders as a likely entry point for introducing new Mindanao food prod-ucts to local consumers, since the Korean im-porters and retailers who facilitated the entry of the Philippine items on sale at the Sunday mar-ket also market these products to other outlets.

A key requirement in gaining acceptance for food products, distributors told GEM, is proper labelling: South Koreans are sophisticated con-sumers who want to know food items' nutri-tional content and shelf-life, among other de-tails.

Items imported from Mindanao must be la-belled with Korean-language stickers that can-not be easily removed, and that must not ob-scure the original labelling.

The increasing trend among Mindanao growers and processors to adopt international food safety and quality standards, combined with more globally oriented marketing strategies, will also help open more doors in South Korea and other promising markets. (GEM) [top]

Jeong Ho-hee, spokesman of the Korean Confederation of Trade Union, vowed to fight against long working hours and high death rate related to industrial accidents. We hope that these demands would, in the long run, be im-plemented so that, it can eventually bring us and our families better life conditions.

But here we are tonight, instead of going to the streets and demonstrating, are celebrating with the spirit of thanksgiving. Beginning this festiv-ity with the Holy Mass, which in itself is an expression of thanksgiving, is but proper. Yes, it‘s true that we foreign workers have a lot of difficulties working in this country but thank God we still have that spirit of joy and gratitude in our hearts to celebrate and thank God for this blessing of work.

Stewardship. This is the message and the spirit that I would like to share with you tonight.

Every work, every job, every opportunity that is given to each one of us is a gift from God. Any-one who "receives God's gifts gratefully, culti-vates them responsibly, shares them lovingly in justice with others and returns them with in-crease to the Lord" is a steward.

Stewardship is a way of life that comes from seeing everything as a gift from God, changing the way we see things. Time, talent, and treas-ure are all shared as a gift, in a planned, propor-tionate, thankful, and sacrificial manner.

So, as stewards of God, let us thank Him that despite all difficulties, we are not one of those thousands of unemployed and underemployed workers all over the world. Let us be grateful that we still have something to send our families back home every month. Let us thank Him that we are in good health; that we wake up every morning with physical stamina and strength to go on with our work. We must be grateful that God has given us the opportunity to participate in continuing His creation through our jobs.

We might have the same sentiments with the workers demonstrating on the streets, but in-

stead of joining them, let‘s be on our knees and storm heaven with our prayers that work condi-tions in the future will be a lot better, so that we, His stewards, will be able to do better in our jobs.

Today, your anniversary and our celebration of Labor Day, let us rejoice and be grateful for the work and job that each one of us have.

LONDON (AFP) – People who get less than six hours sleep per night have an increased risk of dying prematurely, researchers said on Wednesday.

Those who slumbered for less than that amount of time were 12 percent more likely to die early, though researchers also found a link between sleeping more than nine hours and premature death.

"If you sleep little, you can develop diabetes, obesity, hypertension and high cholesterol,"

Francesco Cappuccio, who led research on the subject at Britain's University of Warwick, told AFP.

The study, conducted with the Federico II University in Naples, Italy, aggregated decade-long studies from around the world involving more than 1.3 million people and found "unequivocal evidence of the direct link" between lack of sleep and premature death.

"We think that the relation between little sleep and illness is due to a series of hormonal and

metabolical mechanisms," Cappuccio said.

The findings of the study were published in the Sleep journal.

Cappuccio believes the duration of sleep is a public health issue and should be considered as a behavioural risk factor by doctors.

"Society pushes us to sleep less and less," Cappuccio said, adding that about 20 percent of the population in the United States and Britain

Filipinos in Korea to be alert against the use of

fake Philippine Immigration exit stamp on their

Philippine passports to expedite travel to Ko-

rea. Some unscrupulous individuals entice trav-

elers to apply through them for a fee with a

promise to facilitate their entry to Korea

through the use of fake exit immigration stamps.

Ambassador Cruz appealed to the Filipino com-

munity to be cautious and avoid dealing with

fixers before leaving the country. It is impor-

tant that Filipino travelers should be aware that

under Korean Immigration Laws, the penalty

for this kind of immigration fraud is immediate

deportation and ban from traveling to Korea for

a period of five (5 ) years.

The Embassy has recommended a thorough

investigation of this form of Immigration fraud

to the Philippine Department of Foreign Af-

fairs.

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) and the

Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) signed a

Memorandum of Agreement on 25 November

2009 requiring applicants of a driver‘s license

in the Philippines to also present a Tax Identifi-

cation Number (TIN). Applications from the

following are covered by the agreement:

1. Student permit (if employed);

2. Student Permit to non-professional (if em-

ployed);

3. Student permit to professional;

4. Non-professional to professional;

5. New conductor‘s license;

6. Conversion of foreign license to non-

professional (if employed); and

7. Conversion of foreign license to professional.

The following are exempted:

1. Accredited foreign personnel of diplomatic

missions and international organizations,

such as WHO, ADB, UNESCO, World Bank,

good start because the participants were given a chance to practice their speaking skills and everybody enjoyed and had fun.

The seminar aimed to develop the speaking skills of the lectors as well as the commentators of the HFCC as agreed upon by the members. The speaker, Doc Ems, as we call her, defined public speaking as a process of speaking to a group of people in a structured and deliberate manner intended to inform, influence or enter-tain the listeners. She also gave the five impor-tant elements of Public Speaking namely: who is speaking, what is he saying, to whom it is intended, what is the medium used, and what is its effect. In addition, the speaker discussed the purposes of public speaking: to transmit the message, to inform and motivate people to act, to influence persuade and entertain the listen-ers.

The resource speaker gave emphasis on the ministry of Lectors and Commentators in the Liturgy of the Word. This is what makes the role of Lectors and Commentators different from ordinary public speakers. According to her the speaking style on the part of the reader that is audible, clear and intelligent is the first means of transmitting the Word of God prop-erly to the congregation. She made mention that in the Holy Mass, the message is Christ Him-self, He is the one Whom the readers in the

Mass are proclaiming, so the voice, style, movement and attire are very important. Spiri-tual and technical preparation are essential therefore she highly recommended a reflection on the readings, from the First Reading to the Gospel to have an understanding of the whole context.

At the end of the seminar, everybody expressed a positive feeling of satisfaction about the

whole seminar and planned for a continuation soon. It was indeed a fruitful day for all the participants for the speaker gave more than what is expected and she ended it with these messages: "YOU CAN SPEAK WELL IF YOUR TONGUE CAN DELIVER THE MES-SAGE OF YOUR HEART" and "THEY MAY FORGET WHAT YOU SAID BUT THEY WILL NEVER FORGET HOW YOU MADE THEM FEEL".

30 April 2010 - The Philippine Embassy in Seoul reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that the South Korean National Assem-bly passed revsions on its immigration law allowing for dual citizenship to people meeting certain conditions.

This is aimed at preventing brain drain and bringing in talented foreigners.

The nationality act was revised to allow dual citizenship, to apply to: (1) foreigners with 'exceptional talent'; (2) foreigners married to South Koreans; (3) Koreans adopted overseas as minors; (4) Koreans who gained foreign nationality through marriage; (5) overseas Ko-reans who are over 65 years old, and (6) Kore-ans who gained dual citizenship at birth, if they

apply for dual citizenship and take the oath of allegieance before turning 22 years old.

Previously, South Korea has allowed naturali-zation only for foreigners who lived there for five years or longer and those who married Korean nationals and have stayed in the coun-try for over two years.

The new immigration law also allowed the collection of fingerprints and photos of foreign-ers arriving in the country to bolster security against terrorism.

This law would apply to foreigners 17 years old or older, except for officials of foreign governments and international organizations, as well as others exempted under a presidential decree. END

Both of them will serve the community for

three (3) years. Fr. Alvin blessed everyone who

attended the program. He prayed that more

volunteers will join the community. And also,

he hoped that volunteers would support all the
