Dear Friends,

The month of May “feels” like it has come onto the scene all in a rush. I think it has to do with Easter being celebrated so late in the calendar. The time after Easter will extend into June this year, while May-time, with all its school cycle “endings” seem to come up on top of each other. Endings of the School year rush up into sight; closing exercises, graduations, all the comings and goings of this month which put a temporal ending on what is really a transition. Most people ending a school year or graduating will only go on to more school. I think we celebrate these endings so that we don’t give up hope. I was reminding the first graders this past week that while this school year will be ending soon they still have lots of years of school ahead. So, would you like to be back in the first grade again??? This week we celebrate the sacrament of Confirmation with Bishop Muench on May 13th. This is a sacrament of initiation into Catholic faith. I resist thinking of this time as an ending because it is a transition. A newly confirmed person transitions into life, now initiated into the Mysteries of the Catholic faith. This is the way of life deeply influenced by Jesus Christ through the Catholic Church with which we believe we are equipping the newly confirmed – along with the prayer that they will each have the desire and the courage to live such a life. That’s the one thing about having a desire—there has to be a choice that goes along with it. Desire is not enough. Choice is required.

I recently met with Mr. Joseph Bass, a college student at St Joseph Seminary College, who will be doing his summer internship here at St. Jean Vianney. Joe is the son of Fr. Frank and Donna Bass. Fr. Frank is the pastor of St. Isidore the Farmer Parish in Baker, and Donna is a teacher at St Michael High School. Joe will begin here May 30th so look forward to meeting him.

This weekend we welcome representatives from the Center in Batahola, Sonia Alivares Rivas, Nineth Larios Lopez and Rebekah Menning. Thank you to all who have been faithful in supporting our partnership with the Center in Nicaragua.

Have a happy Easter week.

Love,

Charis Retreat for Adults in Their 20s and 30s

Who Do You Say I Am?

The Jesus Retreat

Two thousand years ago, Jesus put this question to his disciples: Who Do You Say I Am? Spend a day with others and consider your own. response to Jesus’ vital question. Listen to peers talk about faith, relationships, and where Jesus fits in as friend, healer, and role model. Have conversations in small groups, take time to reflect and pray, and connect with old friends or meet new ones. Join us at St. Jean Vianney on Saturday, June 7th. Cost is $25 per person or $20 each when you and a friend register together. The retreat is sponsored by the Baton Rouge Diocese Young Adult Ministry Office. HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY

A Mother’s Rose

A mother trends to her children as the gardener to her rose

Each one needs tender care, nurturing, attentions & love.

A mother’s love for her child is like the sunshine and rain.

Without these things, the rose will wither and fade

But with abundance of these thing, each will thrive,

grown and flower

Thank you for nurturing your children and for being the best mother a child could

ever ask for!

DOING GOOD WORK Congratulations Christopher Simoneaux for receiving the Greek Man of the Year Award, The Vice President excellence award and the Green S award at the annual Student Affairs Awards Convocation at Southeastern University.

St. Jean Vianney Social Responsibility News

Elizabeth Ministry Rosebuds Return Our Elizabeth Ministry Rosebud Program will return to Mary’s Chapel on May 4th and remain until the end of May. We are bringing it back in honor of Mary and Mother’s Day. We will pray for and sup-port those who are pregnant, celebrating birth and adoption, grieving miscarriage, stillbirth, abortion, infant/child death or those wanting to conceive or adopt. If you have one of these special needs, please select the appropriate color-coded silk roses and place in the vase provided. Each week, we will pray for one of the needs according to the color of a live rose, which will be in a separate vase near the display. Friend of Batahola: Emoor “Sam” Bordelon, Jr. When our longtime parishioner, Sam Bordelon, died in January 2013 some knew that his love of God and ministry extended beyond our parish community. As we look forward to our annual visit this May from some of the staff of the Center of Batahola, our adopted mission in Nicaragua, it is fitting that we share with everyone Sam’s generosity upon his death. Sam left $20,000.00 in his estate to Friends of Batahola to continue their mission of teaching and empowerment to the adults and children of their community. What a true reflection of Sam’s com-passion for humanity and his desire to assist women and children in need! And, what a fine example to us all!
