What’s on the go? Hey Warriors and Parents/Guardians! Welcome to our weekly newsletter where all the happenings and info at WVH are shared. Cap and Gown Photos

We are getting many emails asking about Cap and Gown photos. Waterford Valley High works with LifeTouch photography and they have our colours in a school sash. They are currently closed due to restrictions however once they are able to resume business, we will let you know. They do have a studio here in town and parents could book an appointment there. Although unknown at this time, students probably won’t be permitted back into school buildings until September at the earliest. When school buildings do reopen we can certainly look at having LifeTouch photographers take Grad pictures at the school.

Grade 12 Prom Events Many of our Grade 12 students are feeling a little extra forlorn this week as this would have been the week our school celebrated the culmination of thirteen years of schooling with family and friends. The WVH Prom - Events included a Grad BBQ, a dinner and dance with entertainment and speeches, “Most Likely” Awards…. And of course our Safe Grad. Already the planning committee had made some big changes and decided to try a more affordable Prom at the school where ticket prices were to be reduced to $30. But little did anyone know that the biggest changes of all were completely unexpected and yet to come! Some students and families may not want to do anything and even looking at the already purchased Prom dress/suit may be difficult. Maybe the healthiest thing for us to do is something to recognize such a momentous occasion. So what can we do? We put out an idea of a ‘virtual prom’ a few weeks ago however this idea was quickly rejected. It seemed a lot of people assumed it would replace any future events. Please be reassured that this is not the case. We understand this is a very sensitive and emotional time for our students and families that have worked so hard to reach the end of their schooling and the school recognizes the need to proceed cautiously. Thus tomorrow, Tuesday, May 12th, our Prom Coordinator, along with Administration and Guidance have invited a dozen students to partake in a Google meeting to discuss some ideas. We had to limit the number of student participants however if you do have any ideas please feel free to contact your student government representatives to be your voice. So please know we are thinking of you and want to do something this year to help celebrate the wonderful group of students that are our Grade 12’s :)

Social & Emotional Learning Sessions (SEL) To: Parents/Guardians From: Newfoundland & Labrador English School District Date: May 8, 2020 Re: Social & Emotional Learning Sessions (SEL) ____________________________________________________________________________ Dear Parents/Guardians: During these unprecedented times the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District (NLESD) has continued to provide services and resources that assist students in managing their mental health and wellness while classes are suspended. On April 7th, NLESD launched the telephone counselling component of its Volunteer Guidance Services Initiative. This service has seen both parents and students reach out to our team for support in navigating through these challenging times. To expand upon this initiative, our team of volunteer school guidance counselors will be providing further support through online Social Emotional Learning Sessions. These will be facilitated using Google Meet. The sessions will be live events open to all students. To access these SEL sessions, students must log in to their NLESD Google account. These Social and Emotional Learning events are not counselling sessions rather they are live group gatherings for the purpose of promoting positive mental health and wellbeing. A schedule of upcoming fun/helpful sessions will be posted on the Well-Being section of the Learning at Home website at https://learningathome.nlesd.ca/well-being/guidance-services so that users can easily view presentation times, obtain session information, and join as they wish. ★ First live session is Tuesday May 12th, 11:00 am (NST)

“Loving Kindness Meditation” is directed to K to 12 Students and Caregivers

Message from the PE Department So we’ve been impacted by this pandemic for roughly 6 weeks. It’s certainly been challenging for people in many ways. As mentioned in last week's newsletter, being physically active is great for all aspects of health and especially for our mental health. Here is a list of ways that people can be active.

- Lifting weights - Yoga - Running - Gardening - Walking - Geocaching - Biking - Fishing - Golfing - Cleaning - Hiking - Water Activities (Canoeing, kayaking). - Individual Sports - And many more…...

You’ll notice that some activities on this list may be questionable in terms of what is allowed during this pandemic time. However, if you have heard on the news, the province will move into Alert 4 on Monday, May 11. This means that some restrictions will be lifted. Some of these lifted restrictions pertain to such activities as Golfing, Fishing and the opening of parks. Thus, you will have more opportunities and perhaps more incentive to get outside and not only be active, but enjoy nature.

If you would like to get an idea of what Alert 4 is about, here is the website. https://www.gov.nl.ca/covid-19/alert-system/alert-level-4/ Tune into next week’s message. We will provide some more information regarding more ways to be active and highlights about some of our wonderful city trails and parks.

Blast from the past! Did you know that Mr. Newhook’s mom was the host of “Funerama” back in the late 60’s? She was known as Miss Ann! And here she is with our very own Ms. Jane Kelly who was on the show when she was 5 years old :) STAFF FUNNIES Mr. Riche’s Dancing! Back in 1995 a student reported to the Principal, Mr. Dave Dibbon that Mr. Riche had been drinking at the Prom. Note that Mr. Riche doesn’t drink at all however the student was sure of it because he was not impressed with Mr. Riche’s dancing during Prom night. Principal Dibbon was laughing so hard he could barely get the story out! Note that for many years thereafter Mr. Riche would dance on a table in the cafeteria to raise money for the Food Bank :)

Take Care Tips This Taking Care Tips calendar was developed by Labrador-Grenfell Health and posted for Mental Health Week (May 4-10). There are 3 weeks remaining in May, and there are still plenty of activities we can do to help us look after ourselves and each other. Many of these suggestions are things we do everyday without even thinking about it. Perhaps you and your teen can print this calendar, post it somewhere visible, and give yourself a star or smiley face for each day that you completed the suggested activity. Make a little contest of it - who will complete the most self-care activities - teen or parent?? Perhaps someone (individuals, groups, families, classes, streets, etc) in our WVH community would like to take on a challenge and develop a WVH Community Care Activities calendar for June?? There are so many wonderful and helpful things we can do everyday to promote and maintain positive mental health and self-care. While this is important everyday, it is especially important during this pandemic. We would love to hear from you if this is something for you!
