Parish Notes
As we come to the end of the Easter season, which is normally a busy Spring season with graduations, first communion, picnics, and other outdoor activities, we add to it the relaxing of our prolonged COVID-19 “captivity.” We have been captive to limited socializing, masks, distancing, sickness, and all kinds of unhealthy and isolating antisocial practices on account of this pandemic. While we are not totally in the clear, our Easter celebration and the large numbers told us we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. So what have you been putting off for “after the pandemic”? Is it a funeral or a burial celebration, a wedding anniversary or a first communion celebration? Let us know and let us help plan events as we open up again. We want to walk with you, to celebrate, mourn, console, or whatever – it is important that all these things be done in the Lord. Let us know what it is that we can do together, what we can help you with, how we can be of service. One thing that we want to do is thank you for your generosity. This parish is filled with people who are proactive, who see a need and fix it, who are invested. I absolutely love that about you. One thing that you have done well is to contribute to the parish during the pandemic. And you had to make an extra effort to do it, since we stopped taking up collections. In addition there are the multitude of those who volunteered to do extra work over the last year. We would like to celebrate your generosity with a Donor Recognition weekend over June 5-6, which is the feast of Corpus Christi, The Body of Christ. Monica Zirfas will be recognized at the 5:00 PM Saturday Mass for her generous donation in support of the parish. Personally I would like to thank you for supporting the parish during these difficult times. That is one idea. Do we want to do some things to commemorate the common experience (including the frustration) of the last fifteen months, to say “Good-bye” to the pandemic, to have a funeral for it as part of moving on? What about you? We are interested in your ideas, and in planning some events to celebrate our transition away from the severe restrictions we have been living under? Let us know. This coming week I will be on retreat at Conception Abbey. The retreat master this year is Fr. Harry Hagan, OSB, from St. Meinrad Abbey. He and I and one other Irish monk were ordained deacons on May 20, 1976, in the cave at Subiaco in Italy (where Benedict went to from Rome) by Cardinal Eduardo Pironio, an Argentine predecessor of our present Pope Francis. That is 45 years ago this coming week. A year and six days later I was ordained a priest at Conception Abbey’s Basilica along with now Abbot Primate Gregory Polan, OSB. As a result of the retreat, there will not be Masses Monday – Wednesday, only communion services on Tuesday and Wednesday. In fact, since we don’t have an associate (Parochial Vicar) here, the Monday Mass will permanently drop out from the schedule as it was before Fr. Stephen came, beginning this coming Monday. Let us look forward to the end of Easter time and this summer!

Next week, the Second Collection is for Peter’s Pence, which provides Pope Francis with the funds he needs to carry out his charitable works
around the world. The proceeds benefit our brothers and sisters on the margins of society, including victims of war, oppression and disasters. Please be generous.
I know I have said this before, but if you have not yet watched “The Search”, please do, it is a great program. I learned so much from this series. It has prompted me to research several topics I knew little about, or had not even heard of before. One topic I have researched is the host, Chris Stefanick. He seems so smugly confident in the concepts he shares, the skeptic in me said “Who is this guy, what qualifies this actor to teach me anything?”
Facebook has tracked me and offers things to me I might like to follow, Chris Stefanick re-peatedly comes up in my feed. He has a website, has written books, has several series avail-able, and posts sweet videos featuring his family often. This answered some of what he does, but I had to do a bit of research to find his bio, education and qualifications. In my investigation I found Chris de-scribed as a Catholic apologist. Great, another term I had to look up. So what is an apologist? Encyclopedia Britannica says “Roman Catholics...use the term to mean defense of Catholic teaching as a whole and identify apologetics with fundamental theology.” Later in the article it says “ Its function is both to fortify the believer against personal doubts and to remove the intellectual stumbling blocks that inhibit the conversion of unbelievers.”
What a concept. There are people (besides priests, nuns, etc) who make it their career to study theology with the purpose of helping others on their spiritual journey. There are many people in our parish community that help me to fortify my faith through their sharing of themselves, but I had no idea that apologists existed. The more I learn about the Catholic faith, the more I understand I have so much more to learn. It is comforting to me to know that when I, or my children, have doubts there are resources out there like Chris Stefanick, Scott Hahn, Matthew Kelly and others, to help us through it. So many resources are out there, we just need to know where to look.
