Letter to the Buzz

Arnold (Arnie) E. Stumvoll, 83, passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2016 with his loving wife and family by his side. Funeral services for Arnie will be held Friday, May 20, at 10 a.m. at St Raphael’s Catholic Church in Glasgow, followed by interment at the Highland Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Thursday, May 19, 2016 6:00 p.m. at St. Raphael’s Parish. Arnold was born Nov. 8, 1932, in Underwood, ND to Frank and Agnes (Krenz) Stumvoll. He was raised in Max, North Dakota and graduated from Max High School in 1951. Arnie married his best friend and the love of his life, Viola (Vicky) Ulrich, of Underwood, on June 27, 1956. They met when she would go to her grandparent’s farm during the summer. Vicky’s grandparents lived a short distance from Arnie’s parents, so they knew each other when they were young. They would have been married 60 years this year. To their union five children were born: Dean (Sally) Stumvoll, Oakton, VA.; Robert (Barbara) Stumvoll, Libby, MT.; Barbara (Fred) Willis, Billings, MT.; Elizabeth (Breck) Probst, Tuttle, OK.; Jacqueline (Patrick) Murphy, Oklahoma City, OK. After many years working on the farm and dairy business in North Dakota, Clarence Freise and Arnie decided to purchase a bakery business in Glasgow. Then on April 7, 1970 Arnie and two partners opened Arnie’s Electric and in 1980 Arnie and Vicky bought out his partners and continued to extend Arnie’s and Vicky’s existing life partnership to now also include a business partnership. Even though Arnie retired in 1996 he continued to enjoy his time with Bob (who bought out Arnie’s Electric) and Stumvoll Electric. He lived

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks annual walleye spawn egg-take on Fort Peck Reservoir was completed in April. With the help of FWP personnel and the many volunteers, the egg collection goals were exceeded. The egg-take effort began in late March, and was completed by the 21st of April. A total of 552 female walleye

were spawned, with approximately 79 million eggs collected, and 1,674 males were captured during the effort as well. The heaviest walleye weighed was a female at 15.7 pounds. Another female captured measured only 29.6 inches, but weighed 14.4 pounds. “The condition of some of the larger walleye was very impressive this spring,” said Fort Peck Reservoir

Biologist and project-lead Heath Headley. “This is likely due to the high numbers of cisco, an important forage species, which we’ve had over the last couple of years. This abundance of food led to good growth and excellent egg production.” Roughly 39 million eggs remained at the Fort Peck Multi-Species Fish

Hatchery, which in turn raised approximately 19.5 million fry. “Eight to ten million fry will be put into Fort Peck Hatchery ponds to raise to fingerlings,” said Wade Geraets, Fort Peck Fish Hatchery manager. “The rest of the fry will be stocked into Fort Peck Reservoir and other allocated bodies of water around the state.” The other 40 million eggs headed to the Miles City Hatchery, where approximately 8.1 million fry were stocked into hatchery ponds and 8.7 million fry were stocked into Fort Peck Reservoir at Hell Creek. Overall, the weather was quite favorable to the walleye spawning efforts. “Although there were a few cold fronts that passed through, water temperatures remained in the upper 40’s, which is near the ideal spawning temperature for walleye.” said Headley. During egg-take efforts in the past, some cold fronts have been more severe and longer lasting. “Some years we’ve observed water surface temperatures decrease from the upper 40’s to the upper 30’s and remain that way for several days,” said Headley. “Not only did this cause walleye to quit cruising the shallow shorelines where trap nets were located, but it also prevented any green female walleye we captured from ripening up or releasing their eggs. During those poor years, only 38-48 million eggs were collected.” Volunteers, Headley says, were key to the operation. Over 104 individual volunteers, from all over the state of Montana, assisted with this season’s effort. “We wouldn’t be able to set all the trap nets, collect fish, and spawn them on a daily basis unless we had help,” he explained. “Volunteers are the main reason this has been so successful over the years. It’s always great to see new and familiar faces during the walleye egg-taking effort, discuss the Fort Peck fishery, and see some truly remarkable fish.” In addition to walleye eggs, roughly 2.5 million northern pike eggs were collected early in the effort. One hundred thousand northern pike fry were put into a Fort Peck hatchery pond, and the remaining fry were stocked into allocated ponds in Regions 6 and 7.

Walleye Spawn continued from page 5

Big walleyes weren’t the only creatures with fins being captured in the live nets during the spawn. Volunteer helper Xander Pugh of Fort Peck hoists up a huge river carpsucker. A native fish to Montana, the record for a river carpsucker is 6.95 pounds and was caught by Brady Miller while fishing Fort Peck Reservoir on August 15th, 2008. Looks like Xander is holding a state record fish here. While they occasionally get caught, apparently not too many anglers who tie into a big one ever weigh them as a few few individuals reach the largest weight of about 10 pounds, according to the Montana Field Guide. Now, the common carp, also a Montana native fish, can get really huge; Jared Albus of Hinsdale currently holds the state record for common carp, bagging one with bow and arrow on Nelson Reservoir that weighed 40.2 pounds. That was back on May 24th, 1998.
