A LETTER FROM TROY AIKMAN AND JENNIFER SAMPSON
Welcome to the 2018 United Way Awards, the culminating event of the 2017-2018 United Way of Metropolitan Dallas Annual Campaign.
Tonight’s event is a celebration of you – for your boundless generosity, and for your inspiring dedication to making our community the best it can be for all who live here. Thank you for all you have done to make this year’s United Way campaign a success.
At United Way, we are keenly aware that we exist because of a remarkable group of volunteers and donors to workplace campaigns, leaders of countless community-minded companies, visionary foundations who are our partners in a multitude of initiatives, and individual volunteers and donors throughout North Texas.
Gifts to United Way help treat 360 degrees of need, improving educational opportunities, helping families achieve financial stability and ensuring that all North Texans have access to quality health care. We are also committed to tackling the toughest social problems, and developing innovative solutions that offer new hope for meeting long-term challenges.
As we gather to celebrate tonight, let us reflect on all that has been accomplished in the past year, as well as all that remains to be achieved. We are deeply grateful to have you as partners on this evolving journey. As part of Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman’s leadership of United Way of Metropolitan Dallas 2017-18 annual campaign, United Way partnered with Charity Network and world-renowned business leaders in a first-of-its-kind fundraising strategy.
United Way’s 93rd annual campaign, dubbed #UniteWithTroy, engaged long-standing corporate, civic and philanthropic relationships, while engaging new supporters through innovative digital fundraising strategies. Dallas internet entrepreneur and philanthropist Todd Wagner’s Charity Network and United Way teamed up throughout the campaign to offer unique experiences through online auctions on Charity Network’s Charitybuzz.
Aikman invited fans to bid on exclusive opportunities through Charitybuzz, to join him in select cities for a cocktail party the Friday night before select NFL games, along with the opportunity to be on the sidelines before the game and then meet him and Joe Buck in the broadcast booth. In addition, corporate and philanthropic leaders, including CEOs who served previously as United Way annual campaign chairs, offered unique experiences that were auctioned through Charitybuzz to benefit United Way.

ENDOW YOUR TOCQUEVILLE GIFT*
UNITE FOREVER CAMPAIGN
Established in 1999, the Unite Forever campaign was created for the sole purpose of supporting the programs and activities of United Way of Metropolitan Dallas. Gifts to the Foundation’s endowment are invested in perpetuity, with earnings and interest distributed annually. To secure this future, United Way and the Foundation launched the $100 million Unite Forever campaign. Our goal is simple and far-reaching—establish permanent funding for United Way that will provide a more predictable, sustainable, and stable future in order to:
withstand economic and annual fund fluctuations in the existing three-year grant process; grow our ability to invest in strategic partnerships and creative advancements outside the three-year grant cycle; and offer the flexibility needed to fund new and emerging community-wide solutions for the unseen needs of the future.
For more information about making a gift to the Unite Forever campaign, please contact Katherine Stenesen, [email protected], for more information.

As part of the Unite Forever campaign, United Way has established The Ruth Sharp Altshuler Basic Needs Fund and will name our basic needs grants The Ruth Sharp Altshuler Basic Needs Grants at United Way of Metropolitan Dallas. This honors her tireless efforts for and unwavering commitment to the most vulnerable populations in our community. The designation recognizes Mrs. Altshuler’s more than eight decades as a champion fighting to ensure that the basic needs of families continue to be met in times of crisis. This endowment fund, supported by friends of Ruth, will help ensure that United Way can continue to respond to the needs of families through a regular and predictable funding stream year after year. We have raised close to $7 million, exceeding our original target of $5 million, toward an ambitious goal to underwrite a significant portion of the annual basic needs grants that enable United Way to make a substantial impact in our community. Contributions to this fund will honor Ruth and her vision and commitment to improving Dallas by providing in perpetuity that the United Way basic needs grants will forever carry her name.

RUTH SHARP ALTSHULER TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETY CELEBRATES 30 YEARSMore than 1,200 community leaders and philanthropists gathered September 6 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of United Way of Metropolitan Dallas’ Ruth Sharp Altshuler Tocqueville Society. The luncheon, at the Omni Hotel, was presented by JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Central Market.
The gathering honored members of the Tocqueville Society and the group’s founder, Ruth Sharp Altshuler. The event also kicked off the 2017-18 United Way annual campaign under the leadership of campaign chair Troy Aikman. Other honored guests included past Tocqueville Society chairs and this year’s United Way Decades of Distinction award recipients, Margaret McDermott and Margot Perot. Serving as Luncheon Chairs were Roger Horchow, Regen and Jeff Fearon, and Lizzie and Dan Routman. (Sadly, Mrs. Altshuler passed away on December 9 and Mrs. McDermott passed away on May 3.)
“It was humbling to honor Dallas icon and Tocqueville Society founder Ruth Altshuler,” said Jennifer Sampson, McDermott Templeton President and CEO of United Way of Metropolitan Dallas. “Ruth set the gold standard for civic leadership through her vision, energy and boundless dedication to improving lives. United Way of Metropolitan Dallas and North Texas have benefitted immeasurably from all she did.”
We were also deeply honored to recognize Margaret McDermott and Margot Perot with the Decades of Distinction Award for their philanthropic support of numerous initiatives and projects that have had a major impact upon our community.

HURRICANE HARVEY RELIEF FUND
In response to the devastating hurricane that hit south Texas in August 2017, United Way of Metropolitan Dallas established the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund to provide assistance to those affected. Through the generous support of the community, more than $675,000 was ultimately donated to United Way in support of relief initiatives. Roughly a third of the funds were directed to our fellow United Ways operating directly in the communities affected by the storm, while the remainder provided support for local efforts to assist those who sought refuge in the Dallas area.
To determine the best way to distribute funds locally, United Way partnered with the Mayor’s Office, Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster
(VOAD), Dallas Independent School District (DISD), Communities Foundation of Texas (CFT), and the Meadows Foundation, among others. Agencies who received the funds locally include Mass Care Task Force/ First Responders: including the Salvation Army, Red Cross, North Texas Food Bank, and Volunteer Now; Kids Fund; Dallas ISD; and Long-Term Relief Funds in partnership with Catholic Charities. Both NBC’s TODAY show and NBC 5 in Dallas broadcast from the United
Way of Metropolitan Dallas office on the morning of September 5 to highlight the efforts of United Way and members of the community, who brought donations of water, food, and other necessities to be distributed.
Whether by raising funds to aid in relief efforts, supporting first-responders, or mobilizing partners to help with long-term recovery, United Way remains committed to offering hope and help where and when it is most needed.

The Better Together Fund is a program that drives large-scale social change by pooling funder and nonprofit resources to accelerate change and deepen impact with an emphasis on formal collaboration. The Fund defines formal collaboration as a relationship between one nonprofit and another nonprofit, corporation or governmental agency that changes the way participating organizations do business for the long-term, has board involvement and endorsement, and preserves, expands or improves efficiency or services to constituents.
On August 25, 2017, Hurricane Harvey, the first major hurricane to make landfall in the United States in more than a decade, hit the southeastern coast of Texas as a Category 4 storm, destroying homes, overturning vehicles and sinking boats, severing power lines, and forcing tens of thousands of residents to flee. United Way of Metropolitan Dallas established a Disaster Relief Fund to help victims affected and displaced by the storm.

United Way of Metropolitan Dallas understands that the achievement of our community impact goals will require substantial, longer-term investments in the most exceptional programs in the areas of Education, Income and Health. Therefore, United Way uses as competitive grant process to award three-year grants.
Multi-year funding represents the best use of community resources, enabling organizations to focus more on program implementation than annual proposal development. The three-year cycle positions United Way to articulate clear, multi-year funding plans and show a commitment to long-term outcomes and positive results.
Community Impact Grants panels are organized by impact and strategy area. Panel volunteers provide commitment, participation and support to organizations in particular categories and contribute to developing recommendations for grant awards and monitoring and evaluating progress once programs are funded.
