Awaiting the Advocate, the Holy Spirit

The writer, Robert Fulghum, tells of how he responded to the question, “What is the meaning of life?” Taking his wallet out of his pocket, Robert removed from it a small, round mirror about the size of a quarter and ex-plained, “When I was a small child during World War II… one day on the road, I found the broken pieces of a mirror. A German motorcycle had been wrecked in that place. I tried to find all pieces and put them together, but it was not possible, and so I kept the largest piece, this one. And by scratching in on a stone, I made it round. I be-gan to play with it as a toy and became fascinated by the fact that I could reflect light into dark places where sun could never shine. It became a game for me to get light into inaccessible places that I could find. I kept the little mirror and as I grew up, I would take it out at idle moments and continued the challenge of the game.” “As I became a man, I grew to understand that this was not just a child’s game, but a metaphor of what I could do with life. I came to understand that I am not the light or the source of light. But light - be it truth or understanding or knowledge or love - is there, and it will shine in many dark places, if I reflect it. I am a fragment of a mirror, whose shape or size, I do not know. Nevertheless, with what I have, I can reflect light into the dark places of this world. Into the dark places of the human hearts - this is what I am about and this is the meaning of my life.” As we await the coming of the Holy Spirit, our Advocate and Counselor, we can consider ourselves to be the mirror of the Holy Spirit that reflects the 7 gifts and 12 fruits. The gifts are given freely and unconditionally; they are wisdom, counsel, understanding, knowledge, fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord. The fruits of the spirit manifest in a well-cultivated heart: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, forbearance, gentleness, self-control, and chastity. Only when the opposite forces of the sev-en deadly vices: pride, envy, gluttony, lust, anger, greed, and sloth, which are fatal to our spiritual progress, are trans-formed by the power of the Spirit, do we experience limit-less freedom and grace of the Spirit. Jesus promised, “I will not leave you orphan, I will ask the Father to send you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of Truth.” The Early Church experienced the amazing power of the Holy Spirit and the Apostles prayed with people and laid hands on them and the Spirit gushed forth empowering the weak and timid around them. As we await the new Pentecost with the re-opening of our Churches for public worship when all signs are clear, we can invoke the power and grace of the Spirit into our hearts to renew our inner lives and the face of the Earth. The work of the Spirit is to impart life, implant hope, to set the world on fire with God’s love.

Let us cleanse the mirror so that the Spirit may shine forth and bring healing to the whole world. Come Holy Spirit, Fr. Tom and Fr. Litto

Stewardship Reflection

On this sixth Sunday of Easter, our readings remind us that God must come first in our lives, and that love of God shows itself in concrete actions — this is precisely why the stewardship way of life is so necessary.

Our second reading, from St. Peter challenges us to, “Sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts.” In other words, we are to put Christ first above all else in our lives. His role is not merely as Savior of our lives, as significant as that role is — He is to be “Lord” of our lives as well. As His disciples, we are called to make Him ruler of all aspects of our lives — our time, talents and treasure.

The beauty of the stewardship way of life is that it offers us a concrete means to show that Christ truly is Lord of our lives, to “prove” our love, in a manner of speaking, because true love is not mere sentiment. “Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me,” Jesus tells us in our Gospel passage from John.

True love is an act of the will. It requires obedience to all of God’s commandments. This requires courage, humility and deep trust in Him.

But the rewards of this kind of love are indescribably wonderful. Christ tells us Himself, “Whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him.”

Could there be anything more satisfying to live in such a way that the God of the universe is pleased to reveal more and more of Himself to us?
