A baby bottle fundraiser to build a pregnancy centre in Strathmore began on Moth-er’s Day and will wrap up on Father’s Day. Chairman of the Calgary Pregnancy Centre and lead pastor of the Strath-more Alliance Church (SAC), Darrell Young is spearhead-ing the project.

The SAC is a pick up and drop off point for baby bot-tles, which will be filled with donations. Some other Chris-tian churches in the commu-nity are participating as well.

The Strathmore Pregnancy Centre would be a sister or-ganization of the Calgary Pregnancy Centre and pro-vide guidance and support to people expecting a child. The

organization, which is run on Christian principles, does not provide medical services for pregnancy and is pro-life, Young said. Non-Christians and those considering abor-tion will still be encouraged to use the centre, Young said, adding that the purpose of the centre is to assist people with their pregnancy, not dis-criminate.

“We want to help. Anybody is welcome,” said Darrell Young.

The basis of the centre will be trained volunteer counsel-lors who will work with men and/or women who need as-sistance relating to a pregnan-cy. Counsellors will listen and provide advice, mentorship, and help clients access other pregnancy-related services.

Young’s daughter Kayla,

Carmen Lefebvre is excited for the launch of the summer reading program. Co-ordinators are needed to help get things off the ground.

Strathmore Municipal Library seeks summer co-ordinators for reading programRebecca FRiesen Times Contributor

The Strathmore Municipal Library is launching its annual summer reading program this June and the library is cur-rently looking for co-ordinators to take on this project.

The Children’s Summer Reading Pro-gram runs for two months in the sum-mer and requires two co-ordinators to plan, organize, advertise, and run the program, from June 4 to August 31.

The program is designed to help kids of all ages to keep up their reading skills over the summer by introducing reading in new, fun ways.

“The idea of the summer reading pro-gram is it’s a way to keep kids reading,” said Carmen Lefebvre, assistant director of Library Services.

A lot of children will lose some of their reading skills over the summer months, and the library has devised a program to keep kids interested in reading while making it interesting and exciting for them.

While the program isn’t solely based on reading, it is designed to keep chil-dren reading throughout the summer through the use of prizes, challenges, games and other activities.

The program’s details aren’t finalized, but Lefebvre says that the children will be split into age groups and assigned time slots in the morning or afternoon.

“We’re looking for someone who is strongly organized,” Lefebvre says. Re-sumes will be accepted until May 25, and then as soon as the co-ordinators are hired they have to “hit the ground run-ning” because the program starts June 4.

“Within that two weeks they need to start advertising the program, they need to be co-ordinated to go out to the schools,” Lefebvre explains. The co-ordi-nators have to be open and willing to get donations from the public, as well as present the idea to many schools. Open-minded, outgoing, friendly applicants are always well-received Lefebvre says.

“We like to give [this program] to our co-ordinators and say, this is yours, make it yours.”

Lefebvre said the Library tends to hire people who are going to school for edu-cation or library programs, therefore this job will give them a hands-on experi-ence.

“It honestly really brings out a lot in

who saw the need for a cen-tre in Strathmore, suggested the project.

There are mothers who are travelling to Calgary to use a pregnancy centre, which is part of the need for one in Strathmore, said Young.

A steering committee has been formed for the project and money raised from the fundraiser will go toward costs involved with starting up a new centre in Strath-more.

The steering committee expects the project to take about two years to get up and running. The group hopes to build connections with other organizations in the area that provide services related to pregnancy and is not out to compete with anyone, Young said.

Contact Young at the SAC for more information about the project, to pick up a bot-tle to collect donations or to simply donate directly.

the person’s character,” said Lefebvre, “it’s a very good character building pro-gram.”

The position is grant-funded and all applicants must have been in school full-time at some point during the previous 12 months.

“We want anybody who comes into this role, we want them to just make it their own,” Lefebvre says, “there is so much they can do.”

To e-mail your resumes, please contact Jesse Traquair at [email protected] or mail them to the Strathmore Municipal Library at 85 Lakeside Boule-vard, Strathmore, AB, T1P 1A1. For more information, please visit www.strathmo-relibrary.ca.

The Hamlet of Langdon does not have its own supermarket yet but it can boast of a brand new school.

Named after the first person to teach in Langdon, the Sarah Thompson School of Rocky View Schools (formerly the Sarah Thompson Elementary School) is ready to start classes in September 2012.

The Sarah Thompson elementary school will serve grades K to 4 for the region on the east side of Main Street, while Langdon School will continue serve grades K to 9, including the stu-dents in grades K to 5 on the west side of the Main Street.

The school will welcome Grade 5 stu-dents in the fall of 2013. The school was built to accommodate 450 students, said Angela Spanier, director of communica-tions for Rocky View Schools.

“I’m so excited we are opening a new school,” said Rocky View Schools trust-ee Bev LaPeare. “We drastically needed one.”

“My daughter will no longer be in a school with Grade 9’s. It was a big age difference,” said Natacha Brownlee.

In spite of the good news, Langdon parents are concerned about a few things: the absence of a playground, school portables and sidewalks.

“I appreciate the Grade 5’s are com-

ing only in 2013 as my son is already at the Langdon School. But there is a lack of foresight in the planning,” said Chantelle Everett. “It baffles me (that) we don’t have a playground when we know childhood obesity is such a prob-lem.”

LaPeare said the government of Al-berta does not provide for playgrounds. The government provides only the school and 10 metres of ground beyond it as well as the sidewalk directly in front of the building.

“The government provides a place to learn but not a place to play and grow,” said parent and volunteer Shel-agh Phelps.

When the Langdon School was built it did not have a playground. It was thanks to the efforts of the community that the Langdon School got its play-ground in June 2010. At the time, lo-cal businesses loaned three Bobcats, gravel was obtained at a discount and concrete was donated, said Phelps. En-cana Corporation, the Alberta Lottery Fund, Compton Petroleum Corporation, Rocky View Schools and Rocky View County provided the funding.

Thanks to funding by the major do-nors and the community’s efforts, the playground at Langdon School was built at a cost of about $300,000 instead of about $400,000, said Phelps.

“It’s a lot of cookies at a bake sale if we had to make up the difference,” said

Phelps. To simplify and speed up the process

of building playgrounds, LaPeare said Rocky View Schools now use a cata-logue of pre-approved playground de-signs and contractors.

“The community won’t have to worry about liability and insurance. It will just have to worry about the fundraising.”

The pre-approved contractors will do such things as stripping the topsoil, ex-cavating, compacting and pouring the concrete, while donated services will still be allowed for the installation of the playground apparatus.

“There’s a misconception out there that donated services will not be used anymore. They will,” said LaPeare.

Remaining funds will be donated back to the school council’s society.

As for school portables though they were “hot in spring and cold in winter,” said Everett, the portables were none-theless essential to the Langdon School.

LaPeare said 10 school portables cur-rently in use at Langdon School will be moved to “areas in more crisis” in the school district. LaPeare knows the Lang-don area will continue to grow, and in three years it’s expected these school portables will be returned to Langdon.

LaPeare could not comment on the cost of moving school portables.

“It’s a constant juggling act to man-age accommodation priorities,” said La-Peare.

New school comes with some headaches for Langdon residents

Despite the inclement weather, the Spark Rally was still held in Strath-more on May 5. There were 98 Sparks who attended the event com-ing from Strathmore, Drumheller, High River, Okotoks, Turner Valley and Nanton. The Rally was held at the Family Centre and the girls had a chance to make new friends from different Sparks groups while partici-pating in games and activities.

Daisy Recycling out of Standard believes it’s important to give back to the communities that support their business. Relay for Life committee members in Strathmore were presented with a $250 cheque (which is a portion of the proceeds from the first quarter of 2012’s refundable recy-cling) from Lin and Jamie Walker, owner/opera-tors of Daisy Recycling.

The Walkers have been involved with the Relay for Life for many years and this year marks the 10th anniversary of Lin’s survival from ovarian cancer, which makes this a much more personal event for her.

Relay started in Strathmore in 2005. Some of the committee members have been on since its inception, some are brand new and some are re-turning members. Their goal this year is to have 20 teams registered for the event. Currently there are 15 teams signed up and their financial goal is to raise $100,000. A majority of the funds go directly to the Canadian Cancer Society, as most of the costs incurred are local and are covered through sponsorship and donations.

Those who feel the need to contribute to the cause this year may do so by dropping off their own refundable items at the Strathmore Bottle Depot designated to the “Green Berets” team. For more information or to help sponsor the team contact the group at (403) 542-2733.

When someone dies, or is seriously ill, there can be a two different types of relatives who come out of the woodwork. The caring, support-ive family members, and... the vultures.

Strathmore High School (SHS) drama students are currently rehearsing for their upcoming per-formance, ‘Daddy’s Dyin’…who’s got the will?’

“It was just a play I came across. I always read a lot of plays over summer so that I have sort of a handful to choose from and then I see what the class is like, and that’s how I kind of decide what play we’ll do,” said drama teacher Paula Richardson.

The scene is set in 1986 in Lowake, Texas where a family is preparing for the death of the father. The mother had died a few years earlier, and the children have come because they know dad doesn’t have much time left.

The vultures, who have also come home, heard that the father’s will had recently been changed, and they are trying to find it before he passes away in hopes of changing it if they don’t agree with it.

“It is a hilarious show it really is. Even though it has that other sentimental side to it, it has won-

derfully funny moments,” said Richardson.“It’s funny, one of the comments most of the

students made when we first read the play was, ‘I have family members like this’, it had that ele-ment to it where they could all relate to some part of it.”

The play is sure to get a lot of laughs, but is not appropriate for children under 12, said Rich-ardson.

Richardson has also had student teacher Deb-bie Wilson from the University of Calgary doing her practicum at SHS, who she says has been invaluable to her. The actors themselves are full of energy, and excited about the play.

“They are extremely excited about it, they re-ally like it. They like the fact that they get to use accents and the cool thing about this play is it’s written with the accent,” said Richardson.

“The payoff for a teacher, and I say this so of-ten, is just having the kids buy in, having them invest in it, having them take these huge risks.

“They are stepping so far out of their com-fort zone, and they’re going through, or creat-ing characters that they never thought they could create so that’s very exciting.”

The show runs nightly June 3 to 5 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door or can be ordered in advance by calling the school at 403-934-3135.

Accurate Home InspectionsYour LocaL InspectIon servIce

What to Know About a Home InspectionPhysical home inspections are an important part of the home buying / home selling process as well as for ongo-ing property maintenance. A perfect home does not exist. Fortunately most of the problems are minor and they are all repairable. However, you need to be aware of the problems if you are to make in informed decision. Part of our man-date is to ensure that you receive an objective, professional inspection, free from conflicts of interest. Home Inspectors work for the home buyer, not the real estate agent. We do not recommend companies involved in the construction or renovation business and are unbiased and objective.

As of September of 2011, all Home Inspectors in Alberta were required to have provincial certification.

Kevin SorenSon, M.P., Crowfoot Parliamentary Report

Last week marked the anniversary of the May 2, 2011 Federal Election that elected our Conservative government with a majority of the votes on the floor of the House of Commons. Prime Min-ister Stephen Harper’s address to our National Conservative Caucus last week on the first anniversary of the election was truly encouraging.

He reminded us that the Canadian electorate supported our Conservative government by electing us to a third mandate to build on our efforts since 2006 and continue to secure Canada’s prosperity. In fact, Canadians delivered a majority to the Conservative Party in the wake of unprecedented global eco-nomic turmoil because, as the Prime Minister said, “We addressed the dark clouds of their anxiety - we are the only party in this country with a serious workable economic plan.”

Many of us recall the high-level of

concern that Canadians were feeling a year ago. We were hoping that efforts in nations around the world would se-cure a global economic recovery. Yet, we knew that the reports were not positive on the economic performance of the United States – our largest trad-ing partner by far, Europe; and other nations. The Prime Minister said our Conservative Party was the one party that addressed the anxieties of inves-tors, Canadian workers and taxpayers. We had concrete policy proposals in the last election that were not “extrava-gant promises or pie-in-the-sky propo-sitions,” as the Prime Minister described what the Opposition parties were offer-ing during the election campaign.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper re-newed our commitment to keeping Canada prosperous and on “the right side” of history as global economic un-certainty persists. Our government con-tinues to work hard to increase Cana-da’s exports. We have always been an exporting nation and this is most clear-

ly seen in our province of Alberta. Most recently, we have taken mea-

sures to streamline the environmental review process that had been hijacked with off-shore funding by foreign inter-ests. Canada must be able to make de-cisions on large infrastructure projects like the Northern Gateway pipeline. In 2010, Canada’s natural resource sectors employed more than 760,000 workers across the country. Canada’s mining and energy sectors alone represent 10 per cent of the Canadian economy and 40 per cent of our exports. In the next 10 years, more than 500 new projects representing over $500 billion in new investments will be proposed. The po-tential for job growth is enormous.

Budget 2012 delivers “modest but meaningful” spending reductions to help balance the federal budget in the medium-term without raising taxes. Our government is reforming Canada’s immigration system to get more skilled workers into the workforce where and when they are needed. We have secured

First year anniversary for conservative majority governmentan agreement with the provinces on health care for the next five years.

As the government, we will try to seize the opportunities presented to our country in the global market so we can secure economic prosperity for fu-ture generations of Canadians. As we secure economic prosperity for our workers and families, Canada will be able to continue to compete with other economies in the future.

From the office of Kevin SorenSon

Kevin Sorenson, Member of Parlia-ment for Crowfoot, is encouraging or-ganizations that work to promote the well-being of local senior citizens to ap-ply for federal funding.

“As our Member of Parliament, I can report that over the years this program has served Seniors in our riding. We have successfully applied before: it works for us.”

The 2012–2013 call for proposals for community-based projects under the New Horizons for Seniors Program launched on May 8 for all provinces and territories. Organizations can receive up to $25,000 in funding per year by ad-dressing one or more of the program’s five objectives: volunteering, mentoring, expanding awareness of elder abuse, social participation and capital assis-tance.

“It is important to provide meaning-ful programs and activities involving se-niors,” says Sorenson. “This is just one more way we can help support organi-zations in their goal to promote and sup-port the quality of life of Canadian se-niors. Over the years, the New Horizons for Seniors Program has established a legacy helping local seniors put their experience to use through volunteerism and mentorship at the grassroots level in communities large and small.”

The application deadline for commu-nity-based projects is June 29.

Residential or Acreage!

Pat FuleFule for Thought

My purposes for these columns were that I want-ed people to smile, maybe laugh, and possibly be affected by some of my experiences. I’ve always felt that it’s important to be able to laugh at myself, and to not take myself too seriously. That’s why I’ve been trusting you with some of my most em-barrassing moments! That brings me to the Sum-mer of 1976!

That Summer, I had gotten a job with my friend Dave, as a caretaker at the Banff Centre. There were many cleaning jobs, conference set-ups, and heavy furniture moving.

The afternoon of our first day on the job was a scorcher. It was sunny, hot, and Dave and I were given an outside job. We were to take two buck-ets of hot water mixed with vinegar, a razor blade device, and scrape all the paint spots off the outer window of an Art Studio window. All the way to this studio, Dave and I grumbled about what a crappy job we got stuck with, and how we’d be out in the blistering sun ALL afternoon! We got to the deck outside the studio with our gear and began to scrape. After about two minutes, Dave turned to me and said, “do you see what I see?”

I said I did, and we began to feel grateful to our boss … what a good guy he was … thoughtful.

To our surprise we were scraping paint spots off a window to a studio, with nude female models!! Now, when you’re a 16 year-old-boy, THIS is good news!

We worked hard all afternoon, and thought we were being discreet. However, the head of the Art Faculty did come out a couple of times to ask if we really worked there! At the end of our shift, we cleaned up the supplies and headed back to the caretakers’ office.

Our boss was smiling, and asked if our after-noon went well! We all had a laugh, and I never forgot that first day on the job (I don’t think the Art instructor did either … probably not his mod-els, as well)!

Later that same summer, Dave and I were giv-en the job of getting five large, wooden bulletin boards up to the sixth floor of one of the build-ings. Now you know me by now, I was sure there was an easier way to get these monstrosities up to that floor. Then, a flash of brilliance hit me (or it was the cafeteria chili?).

I thought, instead of carrying each and muscling them in the elevator, why not just go on the bal-cony with a rope, and PULL them up, one by one? It seemed smart, so we got rope and tied our first bulletin board by one its “legs.”

We began the process of pulling it up to the bal-cony. You know those old Bugs Bunny cartoons, where (again) the coyote does something similar,

and of course, the rope frays and unwinds? Funny thing, but that’s what happened to Dave and me! We looked at the unwinding rope, then each other, back to the rope, until it final came undone! We had gotten it to about the fourth floor when it un-ravelled. We looked down over the balcony railing to see the wooden bulletin board hit the ground. It smashed, and splintered, and one of its legs went through a ground-level window! Again, Dave and I looked at each other, then down, in time to see our boss walking up the road to check on us! He was smoking … it looked like he almost swallowed the cigarette! But, after a pause, we could see that he was laughing and shaking his head. We weren’t going to be fired after all! From then on, we made sure we did things HIS way!

By the end of summer, I had bought my first car, a little two door Toyota. On the Labour Day weekend, I took a date ( yes, she was alive, and no … she WASN’T inflatable!) to the old “Cinema Park Drive-In.”

Now for those of you youngsters out there, a drive-in was where you took your car to an outside theatre, hooked up a crappy speaker to the win-dow, and MAYBE watched the movie. Near the end of the date, we were ready to leave. You know those happy, little cartoons they used to play, about the concession, and rules for the Drive-in? Well, I had watched one about making sure to hang up the speaker on its pole before leaving. As we pulled away, there was a huge “BANG” noise! I looked all around, and then to my horror, realized I had still had the speaker on my window! The window and car were fine, but I had killed that poor, innocent car speaker. Embarrassed, I hung it back up, and drove slowly away … I don’t think we ever had a second date … I’ve always wondered why.

Later that Halloween, Dave and I were in a car accident in that same Toyota. We had minor inju-ries, but the car was demolished. My parents took me out of school the next day to drive them to Calgary for Christmas shopping. I was so mad, I had just had a frightening accident, and they were making me drive in Calgary? My dad said that I was not going to be scared to drive, and I had to get RIGHT back behind the wheel. It was a tough lesson, and I was mad, but it was a smart thing to do. I got over the fear of the accident, and (knock on wood) haven’t been in one SINCE 1976! Parents DO have a way of teaching us kids, after all. So, 1976 was a strange year, with laughter, embarrass-ment, and a near-death experience. It was definite-ly a memorable year!

Letters to the editor

To the EditorThere has never really been much of a time in my life

that I actually felt enough of a push behind my back to make me honestly consider writing into the paper. Any paper. Perhaps that comes from my youth and still having the absent mindset that news is something the older generation relates too. But with all things, times change. With that simple notion, we all know change is big, small, scary and great.

This isn’t a letter that is concerning the pass election or anything that may seem like it’s worth reading over. Rather this is something of praise and recognizing that a lot of employees of this town are greatly overlooked. Then again, I suppose a lot of business do such a thing. Workers are the grease in the clogs that make almost every business – successful or not – work.

Everyone works but not everyone receives credit where it’s so appropriately due.

So I suppose that is what this is. A letter for an ap-preciation to a couple of people that are settled on the outer reaches of town, yes talking about some town employees that are often forgotten. It may not seem like it’s the biggest thing out there to go and give sup-port to these select groups, but I certainly due feel it’s needed.

Firstly how many people honestly know that the civ-ic centre is operated by the Strathmore Family Centre personal? I think it is roundly thought that the High school, AG society or the swimming pool take care of that facility. I was justly proven wrong with this. Attend-ing a function a little while ago, I soon realized that the Family Centre staff; are the ones who come over to

Giving credit where credit is duebring things in. They get the chairs ready for however many, bring tables in from a little white shed outside. I am not certainly why I am so interested in learning such a thing, but I was nonetheless.

Either way, I realized that this certain staff is over looked a lot. They not only maintain the Family Centre but are preparing the Civic Centre for us all.

So in the end of this rather short and perhaps limited letter, I ex-tend my thanks to this select staff alongside the other hard workers of this town. The ones who are often overlooked and the ones who are well known!

With camping season approaching fast, both vet-eran and first-time campers are eager to start en-joying all that summer has to offer. But in the ex-citement people often make simple mistakes that can ruin a vacation.

Jesse Bastain, the owner of the online store Out-door Pursuits Canada, says there are a few essen-tials that all campers need to bring, whether you’re in an RV or a tent. Bastain says these are just the basics for a first-time camper, but are required items for the more experienced camper.

Among the list is a sturdy fixed-blade knife, fire starter, a first-aid kid that includes bug repel-lent and bug bite remedy, an axe and a flashlight. Bastain said a para-cord (parachute cord) is “one of the most essential items when camping” be-cause of its wide variety of uses. From cooking to clothing repair, the cord’s uses are “virtually end-less.” All of these items, and more, can be found at www.outdoorpursuitscanada.com.

Preparing to go camping can be a daunting task, especially when taking an RV, and Darcy Ledene,

general manager of the Strathmore & District Agri-cultural Society walks through the steps of setting up an RV for a weekend camping trip.

“I would check my propane levels, check my cupboards... to make sure [everything] is secure for travel,” Ledene says. If water is not available at the campsite, Ledene also says he would make sure he had a sufficient supply and double-check his black and grey tanks to make sure they were empty.

Along with bringing items like screwdrivers, tarps and firewood, Ledene also says it is impor-tant to pack a variety of clothes as the weather can really impact a camping trip.

“Camping weather can change in a heartbeat,” Ledene cautions, and says to prepare for the best and worst conditions.

Location can be just as important as the items you bring camping with you, however.

The Strathmore Agricultural Grounds operates 365 days a year and is one of the few campsites to offer year-round service, along with almost all types of camping. There are many different ser-vices available, including firewood and water.

Trying to manage your own marketing is hectic, confusing and one false move can waste hours of your time. Before setting up your account, and even now while your account exists, can you say for sure that each detail is filled out properly? Can you say that you completely reviewed and understood your policy and user agreement? One keystroke error can cause major problems and not just for your busi-ness but for all the surrounding business near your location.

Recently I discovered why. While trying to set up a social media account I

noticed I could not enter the address as Strathmore, Alberta. The only option available was Strathmore, Alabama. Frustrated I bypassed it by simply picking Alabama and was hoping to correct the issue once the account was confirmed.

After a painstaking four-hour journey through the net trying to fix the problem and talking with the social media network for help, I found one of the problems, and it was much worse than I anticipated.

Because the majority of social media users located in Strathmore I believe have encountered the same problem and also bypassed it by entering Alabama. Strathmore Alberta now looks like Strathmore, Ala-bama in certain search queries and the eyes of soft-ware running the accounts plus the maps that assist in feeding them.

These engines do not understand why some resi-dents and vendors are listed as Strathmore, Alberta and others are listed as Strathmore, Alabama. The engine reads and tries to offer the most obvious choices to those setting up an account and those searching for vendors and users. Strathmore itself also becomes less recognizable and visible in search results, directories, social media and many other data management engines.

Many people use social media accounts to in-crease their audience through paid advertisements. If a vendor asks for the ad to be displayed outside their friend’s list and existing followers and network but the contact information is incorrect it would dis-play to the wrong network, region and even country.

Who does it affect?Vendors and consumers are both affected. The

search engine results may not display what the consumer is looking for and the vender cannot be found when location information is inaccurate.

How to fix it?Anyone with a social media, directory listing ac-

count could recheck their settings. Even vendors

that list in free directories should be sure it says Strathmore, AB not AL. If you are unable to change the location to Alberta leave the location empty and notify your account provider.

Keep in mind that engines and crawlers record an image of your website, page, social media face and more. Then use that information to draw new visitors to their website, directory or engine. Like a directory that finds vendors to list such as Yel-low pages. They may index your information once continuously like Google or once a year, it may take a while for these engines to re-record the correct information.

Directories have a large audience and if they store old information of the business, it also does not show up in the appropriate search query. There is more to this than I can continually list so I can only stress the facts.

Seek advice from a professional website develop-er! Not necessarily a Webmaster or marketer, I mean a true developer that understands the programming and the integrated marketing behind a website. A website designer is a graphic artist, a website pro-grammer creates your sites functionality and naviga-tion, a website or online marketer understand the many different ways to get a great rank for your website or business listing and all the rules behind that. A website developer, however, has the experi-ence and the greater knowledge of all the above. Speaking with a developer is always your best op-tion.

Also please do not think this is an issue your so-cial media provider can fix. It breaches the privacy policy and it is up to the person signing up for the account to fill it out correctly. By rights if you pro-vide false information your account provider can discontinue service which is very difficult to rein-state. These media accounts can provide amazing free marketing for our businesses but it is up to us to read our policy agreements and fill our informa-tion out correctly. It takes a lot of work to maintain these type of media engines, offering live tech sup-port might not allow these services to be offered for free?

I really hope we can come together on this and make a difference for all Strathmore business long term. I myself cannot optimize many of my client’s accounts until this begins to resolve. It damages business productivity, but most importantly it can be damaging for all the vendors in Strathmore to not be visible to the consumers around them. Strathmore is a great place to live and work, I hope we can all work together to make this happen for the greater good of Strathmore.

Actor and Playwright Randall Wiebe brought a first century Bible character into the 21st centu-ry, on May 14 at the Hope Community Covenant Church in Strathmore.

His one-man play was on Thomas the Doubter, based on the disciple Thomas, who followed Jesus. In the past, Wiebe has played Jesus in the Drumheller Passion plays.

“Thomas is one of the disciples that I relate to,” said Wiebe .

He used only a chair and shawl as props in the performance, uti-lizing a very physical acting style. He drew the audience into the story by walking out to them and asking them to respond to his questions and be a part of the story. The plot moved along the travels of the disciples and their witness of multiple miracles that occurred along the way.

Even after witnessing and de-livering miracles through their time with Jesus, all the disciples encountered doubt when Jesus was taken and later crucified. Thomas makes the point that he was the only one stuck through time with the label of “Doubter”, when in fact all the disciples questioned their commitment because of the crucifixion. The final scene shows Thomas placing his hands in the wounds of the risen Jesus and his doubt turning to belief, so much so that he carried on to found a church in India.

“The scene where he encounters Jesus after the resurrection was one of the most amazing, dra-matic, powerful scenes in all the Bible. I thought

that alone made it a worthwhile story to tell. As I see it, unbelief comes about because people don’t face their doubts, aren’t honest about them, or walk away because they are doubting and then they never get the answers. Thomas is bold about his doubt and he gets answers,” said Wiebe. “Facts don’t satisfy, they aren’t the be all-end all to everything. You can search and search and ac-

cumulate the facts and technology and everything else and still feel empty and meaningless. It only comes together with faith and be-lief,” said Wiebe.

There was a good audience re-sponse to the play.

“It was excellent. He is amaz-ing. You don’t realize what others around Jesus might have felt,” said Donna Martynes.

“I loved it. The story was from a real person’s perspective,” said Marjonne Eygenraam.

This was the final time that Wiebe will be performing this play. He had performed it in vari-ous sites across North America, Guam, Malaysia and Hawaii. He donated all the gift offering to the She Has A Name acting troupe, who are doing a cross Canada tour this year. The play is about human trafficking and Wiebe said eradicating human traffick-

ing is a cause he believes in. Putting on Thomas the Doubter was one way he could contribute to the other. The She Has A Name troupe are looking for help in many areas, from supporting their Fuel the Tour by donating money for gas, to handing out flyers, to being ushers at the vari-ous shows. For more info about opportunities to help, check online at www.shehasaname.net. She Has A Name appears next in Lethbridge.

With many people making the commute to the city for work, and life just being busy in general, it can be hard to take a minute to relax and get to know your neighbours.

Which is why the Town of Strathmore is hoping to host the President’s Choice BBQ Town grand prize event. The Grand prize is a BBQ event for up to 5,000 people including family entertain-ment, stage shows with Hedley as the headliner and a chance to set a World Record. There will also be $25,000 donated to President’s Choice Children’s Charity.

Strathmore and another 600 communities across Canada were pre-selected for a chance to win. There is a link on the Town of Strathmore Facebook page that will take people to the PC BBQ Town webpage. People can comment, giv-ing the town an even better chance of being en-

tered in for the grand prize. “The more hits we get and the more comments

we get, brings us up higher and they take the top 20 communities. Then out of those 20 (com-munities) people vote on them, so we have to get as many votes as we can on May 28,” said Jennifer Cuthbertson, administrative assistant for the Town.

Voting begins on May 28 and will run until June 11. There will be a vote button under each community’s name, and only one vote per e-mail is allowed per day.

There are nine secondary prizes available, which are a BBQ for up to 2,000 people. As of May 15, Strathmore was in 11th place. Residents are encouraged to go to the Town of Strathmore Facebook page to the link and leave a comment, or go to www.pcbbqtown.ca.

From May 28 to June 11 don’t forget to vote daily for Strathmore to win the grand prize, and bring the community together.

Gearing up for the camping seasonContinued from Page 10

However, not all camp sites have these perks included so it is important to do your research before choosing a destination.

Kendra Van Dyk, a team leader of campgrounds with Parks Canada, says it is important for people to “educate themselves about their planned des-tination.” Often campgrounds have websites that can be visited to learn more about the rules and regulations of their campsite, such as fire bans, services available and other information such as reservations.

“A lot of campgrounds in the mountains are not near stores to buy replacement equipment if something important is forgotten or breaks. The same applies to RV campers. They should ensure that their RV is in good working condition,” said Van Dyk.

Camping in the mountains is beautiful and a nice

change of scenery, but with the benefits, campers also have to be aware of sharing the space with wildlife.

“The most important thing that can be recom-mended for campers concerned about wildlife is to keep a ‘bare’ campsite. So, whenever they are not eating they should have all their food, gar-bage, toiletries and cooking supplies stored away in a bear proof container such as their vehicle, RV, or in a food storage locker,” Van Dyk said.

Researching the wildlife in the area is beneficial so you can know how to best be prepared with what you will be dealing with.

“The essence of camping is to entertain yourself and to get you out of the camper,” Bastain adds, suggesting a simple deck of cards can provide ad-equate entertainment.

Ledene agrees, saying the biggest thing with camping is to “come with friends” because “camp-ing is much more enjoyable with a group.”

Keith Reynolds approached Wheatland County Council to acquire funding for the new Strathmore Seed Cleaning Plant through the Alberta Govern-ment Capital Finance Association (ACFA) . The funds are available through the Municipal Government Act.

The Co-op compared costs of borrowing from various banks and Credit Unions and found that ac-cessing funds from ACFA would result in consider-able cost savings.

“Banks have no problem in lending to us,” said Reynolds, who outlined the organization’s assets.

By having the county apply for the funds and in-vest them to the Co-op, the organization would save approximately three per cent or $250,000 interest on the $2.5 million request.

“It is a very substantial saving for us,” said Reyn-olds.

Jennifer Deak, Chief Administrative Officer for the County, said if the money were awarded, the County would have to advertise the request and give the ratepayers an opportunity to give feedback on granting the money and create a bylaw to award it. Reynolds gave councillors a handout as to the assets the Co-op had in regards to possible collateral avail-able for the loan contract.

Balancing the BooksDeak asked council to look at the rates charged

for water plant maintenance in Rockyford and Hus-sar. She said, according to the current contract, the cost of service is greater than the rate charged.

“We have to go with what’s in the schedule,” said Deak, who suggested that the rates be changed to reflect the actual service costs.

The county must supply 30 days’ notice to any rate change. Councillors suggested if the time sheets submitted for payment showed work in excess of the norm, that clarification is given for the cause of the extended work. They asked Deak to draw up a draft agreement to change the rates effective as of July 1, 2012 and bring it back to council for ap-proval.

charity funds awarded leys familyCounty of Wheatland councillors awarded the Ley

family $4,000 from the Hans Madsen Charity Fund. Their daughter Danielle has Kleefstra syndrome and requires special care. The family is also saving for a trip to Texas, or the Netherlands, to meet Dr. Tjitske Kleefstra and other families dealing with the syn-drome. The funds were left in a bequest made by Hans Madsen, who left funds to be used to help crippled, ill or needy children of the area.

Board Members in placeCounty councillors have submitted the names of

people in their divisions who will sit on the Com-munity Enhancement Fund Board. There were two members from each division appointed. Council will begin to refer various requests for funding to the board after the first organizational meeting, held on May 29, 2012.

Paving tendersThere were seven tenders for the paving of RR

225 (2 miles) and the Nightingale road RR245 (6.25 miles). They were Brooks Asphalt and Aggregate, Central City Asphalt, Riverside Construction, South-rock Ltd. Better Border Paving, E Construction and Larmen Construction Inc. The bids were close, rang-

ing between $3,299,508 and $3,811,340. Larmen Construction Inc. won the tender and estimated work would begin July 10 and finish approximately Oct. 15.

“The bid comes about $1 million under estimated cost,” said Dave Churchill, Manager of Transporta-tion and Infrastructure for the county.

He said the estimate was based on last year’s as-phalt costs, which have decreased significantly. The fact that Alberta Transportation tenders had not yet been released also kept bids down.

dust controlSeveral ratepayers in the Lakes of Muirfield by

Lyalta have asked the county to take dust control measures on the north and east sides of Boundary Road intersection close to town. They have concerns about health and safety issues caused by the dust. Residents suggested installation of additional sig-nage to slow traffic.

“We don’t put signs up for dust. If it is a safety issue, that is different,” said Councillor Ben Arm-strong.

Councillor Brenda Knight indicated that some ratepayers in the affected area are questioning what they are getting for their tax dollars as they pay out of pocket for their own service costs. Coun-cil asked that the Protection officers check out the intersection for safety concerns, and asked the Ad-ministrative officer to provide a rough estimate on how much it would cost the county to implement a countywide dust control program. The program would look at rural address driveways and 1000-foot road distance along each driveway. The information will be brought back to council for discussion.

“Dust control is always an issue,” said Councillor Knight.

develoPers need to adhere to asP conditions

County councillors discussed the need for devel-opers to adhere to the conditions of the contracts associated with their new subdivision applications. Developers must develop roads and pay offsite lev-ies committed as part of their application approval, even if the development occurs in stages. They gave the example of Eagle Shores development, who committed to 691 sites over three phases. The devel-oper only wants to build a portion of the road and pay offsite levies for 133 sites in the initial phase. Eagle Shores must pay for 2.6 miles of paving and road development prior to the approval of the sub-division.

“The developer has the sole cost of building the first road in the development,” said Dave Churchill, Manager of Transportation and Infrastructure.

“If you said you were going to build a road, build a road,” said Councillor Ben Armstrong.

Staff had indicated the wording in the applications has caused some confusion for developers.

“We need to be a lot clearer to the developers about what needs to be done,” said Councillor Ken Sauve.

A committee has been formed to undertake a new project in Standard. Community members are coming to-gether to bring Standard to a level of excellence in aesthetics similar to Communities in Bloom, as a starting point from the ground up.

The Standard Beautification Com-mittee is attempting to beautify the Village of Standard by placing recycled plastic self-watering planters on the median on Main Street (The Broad-way) and shrubs and perennial beds at the signs on the north and south entrances to the village.

They expect that about $5,000 will be needed to purchase 10 2x2x6 plant-ers, shrubs, soil, plants and solar lights to get the project off the ground. They will also attempt to decorate the plant-ers in the off seasons when it is not possible to have flowers.

The committee’ s hope is that par-ticipation by the students and youth in the community will help to instil pride in the project. One young person has already taken on the project. Sydni Sundgaard just celebrated her eighth

birthday and in lieu of gifts she asked her friends to donate money and get gift certificates from greenhouses in and around the community for the project. She explained to her Mom that she received enough gifts from family and that she wanted to do this for her community. She raised $130 and handed her money over to Car-ol McKay, organizer of the Standard Beautification project, at the Spring Concert. Both her parents (and grand-parents) were impressed and proud of her selfless act.

Lions President David Nielsen also gave McKay a cheque in the amount of $2500 on behalf of the Lions Club of Standard for the project.

If you would like to consider invest-ing in Standard’s beautification proj-ect, cheques should be made payable to the Village of Standard and forward-ed to Carol McKay, Box 291, Standard, Alberta, T0J 3G0. Please make note on the cheques that the money is des-ignated “Standard Beautification Proj-ect” and upon request a “Charitable Tax Donation Receipt” will be issued.

If you need more information, please feel free to contact Carol McKay via e-mail ([email protected]).

The facts may be out of sight and out of mind for many in our westernized so-ciety, including that half of the world’s population is living in poverty.

Looking a little closer at Uganda, Af-rica, where over a million children are or-phaned by AIDS, there are humanitarian organizations working to build opportu-nities in the small communities through-out the country.

Holy Cross Collegiate student, Noah Dollinger, 16, visited Uganda as a part of the group of 11 from the Strathmore Full Gospel Church, April 2-16. The group was partnered with the organization Hungry for Life in order to work with Noah’s Ark Children’s Ministry Uganda (NACMU).

The humanitarian trip’s purpose in re-gards to HFL was to aid in the construc-tion of a vocational school in Mukono, where subjects such as music, clothing, textile, wood work and agriculture will be promoted.

A majority of the trip was spent in the NACMU compound in Mukono where the vocational school is based. The com-pound also contains a church, an orphan-age, a medical centre and a farmhouse. The group helped care for the children, planned Sunday school lessons, prepared Easter activities, and played with the kids.

The trip to Uganda was the first time Dollinger’s ever travelled outside of Can-ada, and the initial experience of enter-ing the country came with a “huge cul-ture shock.”

“As soon as you stepped off the plane, all around you were people with auto-matic guns. It was crazy to see how dif-ferent everyone is,” said Dollinger.

After getting settled and into a routine, Dollinger said a typical day including playing with the children and helping work with the people. The group also visited the city of Jinja, a wealthier area of Uganda, visited the source of the Nile River, and went on a two day safari.

Looking back over the trip, Dollinger thought the most prominent memory was when the group walked the kids from school back to their homes in the village.

“We got to see how the kids lived, and how poor they were and met their fami-lies. A typical bedroom in our houses is

Creating opportunity in Uganda

pretty much a house for a family of five kids,” said Dollinger.

Asked to compare people in Uganda to people in Canada, Dollinger said the most major difference was in attitude.

“We have so much but, we want more always. We’re never really happy. They have so little but they are always so hap-py, there is something about them that makes you happy always,” said Dollinger.

Now that Dollinger is back in Canada, he feels like he has a different perspec-tive and particularly notices when stu-dents are being wasteful.

“I see people throwing out whole lunches, why would you do that?’ And then of course you see, ‘oh my goodness, I broke my phone, my life is over,’ but no it’s not. You can go do other things,” said Dollinger.

The church group is looking to do an-other humanitarian trip within the next two years. If given the opportunity, Doll-inger said he would definitely want to go again.

“How crazy it was going there, all of the kids are abandoned, abused, or-phaned kids. Every time you walk you have six or seven kids crawling on you because they are so excited to see you,” said Dollinger.

The Strathmore Full Gospel Church is currently sponsoring a child outside of the compound in Mukono. More infor-mation about becoming a sponsor can be found at http://www.newhorizonschool-sponsorship.ca/

all DeckeD outStain - you wouldn’t want it on your clothes,

but on your outdoor wood décor - it’s a thing of beauti!

Before you get all decked out, though, there are two simple secrets to a long-lasting finish – quality stain and prep work. Together they’re a dynamic duo. Without them, you might be doing your project again next year.

We understand. Prep work is a bit like homework – beneficial but who wants to do it! However, since 90% of stain failure is due to lack of prep work, it’s key. Here are the simple, easy steps to protect yourinvestment for a lifetime of enjoyment. If you are working with a brand new surface, always check moisture content to ensure that the wood has had sufficient time to dry. If so, you’ve earned a pass all the way to the Shiny is Out step! If the surface is not new, you got it – it’s step one for you!

To Strip or Not to StripDeep down, you know it! If your existing stain is 30% to 50% peeling it is best to remove the coating and start fresh. Natura Safe Strip effectively removes stain and paint from both horizontal and vertical sur-faces. And, unlike sanding, it will not grind existing mildew deeper into the wood.

Green CleanYour surface must be free from mildew, dirt and grease. Mildew sometimes cannot be seen, but if not removed it will cause the stain to peel. Assume it’s there and treat the surface with Natura Mildew Off. Next, remove grease and dirt with Natura Safe Prep. By the way, while your surface is getting clean, the environment is staying green. All Natura products are formulated to be safe for the environment.

RaNDY

Get the Grey OutWood needs a good facial before staining. That grey wood you want to cover up with stain is actually dead wood fibres that are sitting on top on the wood. If not removed, as soon as moisture penetrates, they, along with your new stain, will lift. Remove greyed wood with Natura Wood Prep or Wood Shield Wood Restorer.

Shiny is OutStains need to penetrate to be effective. New wood will sometimes have sheen known as mill glaze, which prevents stain from penetrating. Simply sand with 80 grit sandpaper or use Wood Shield WoodRestorer.

Phew! Now that the prep work is done, it’s time to add the beauty. Choose between a semi-transparent stain which will allow the natural grain and characteristic of the wood to show through, or a solid stain which will penetrate the wood and highlight the texture of the wood. Beauti-Tone’s Wood-Shield semi-transparent is available in 60 colours and Wood-Shield solid can be mixed in virtually any colour.

Manufactured in Canada by Home Hardware in a full array of paints and stains, Beauti-Tone is sold exclu-sively at Home Hardware, Home Hardware BuildingCentre, and Home Building Centre stores. Consultant with your local Canada’s Paint Expert for the stain that suits you, and your wood, best.

the 20th Century. Rockyford didn’t ex-ist at all at this time, and wasn’t created until 1913. But, there were coal mines at Carbon, eight miles north, and at Drumheller and Beiseker. All the vil-lages and towns in this area were built in the last century because of the railroad, and as we know are gradually disappearing once again.

Merle was born on the Marshman Farm in 1926. Ini-tially, he attended Greyhurst School, then spent the years 1941-1943 at the dormitory in Drumheller, where he went to high school. He has spent his whole life working on his mixed farm of grain and cattle, farming both his paternal and maternal grandparent’s farmland. In the mid-1940’s, he started a feed-lot with approximately 100 head of cattle. These were purchased at auc-tion in Calgary, then moved by train to Rockyford and herded to the farm. In the 1970’s, the cattle expanded to 600 head!

Merle met his wife Verna, who was teaching in Carbon, at a square dance. They were married on 4th July 1953,

and this wedding produced three sons, two daughters, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Verna passed away from cancer in 1998.

Merle’s community activities have included working with the board of

The Rosebud Seed Clean-ing Plant for 19 years, being a founding member of The Rosebud Gas

Co-op, board member of Rockyford United Church, and The Rockyford Rural Fire board. He was a mem-ber of the Carbon Lion’s

Club, and caretaker and lineman for rural telephones.

His sons, Lloyd, Dwayne and Ger-ald now run the fifth generation farm. Merle still lives in his house in Rocky-ford, where he retired to with Verna in 1995. He advises the biggest changes he has seen over the years have been the move from horse drawn farm equipment to mechanization, continu-ous farming as opposed to summer fal-low, the use of GPS with seeding and harvesting equipment, and how physi-cal labour has been replaced by mental labour.

John GodsmanTimes Contributor

Merle Marshman’s history is unique as it begins with both his Mother’s and Father’s families, and their move to Canada. Both families knew each other before they moved, and they each pur-chased land through the Calgary Colo-nization Co. The Marshman homestead became a century farm in 2009, and the Leathart homestead will be one in 2013.

Merle’s grandfather, on his father’s side was born in Mifflin, Pennsylvania. The Marshman family moved to Ded-ham, Iowa (where Merle’s father was born); and then to Roseburg, Oregon for 17 years. In 1909, Merle’s father, uncles and grandfather, took a team of horses, one wagon, some farm machin-ery and some furniture, and travelled to Crossfield by train. They used horse and wagon to travel from Crossfield to the farm located 10 miles north of

where Rockyford now stands.Merle’s grandfather on his mother’s

side was born in Manchester, Wiscon-sin in 1854, and moved to Charles City, Iowa (where Merle’s mother was born). The family then moved to The Dakotas, and then to Tekoa, Washing-ton in 1898, before arriving in Canada in 1911. They lived on a farm south of Carbon, before purchasing their homestead near Redland in 1913. Win-field Marshman and Mildred Leathart (Merle’s parents) were married in April 1913, near Carbon. Their first home may have been the first duplex built in the area. Winfield and Mildred lived in one half of the house, and the relatives in the other half! They moved to their own home in 1920.

Both families moved from the Ameri-can mid-west to Oregon and Washing-ton by wagon, quite possibly on The Oregon Trail. One can only imagine this travel by wagon in those days – be-fore the mechanization introduced in

The Crowfoot Livestock Club got together on May 5 for a bottle drive to raise funds for their upcoming shows. While it was a cold and rainy morning, the club was suc-cessful in raising just over $470. Thank you to all family, friends and neighbours that donated as well as the great service at the Strathmore depot. Matthew eggen (l-r), Wy-att Matile, Cole Johnson, James Farmer, Colten Stewart and Ni-cole eggen battle the cold to raise funds.

Westmount Hockey Program

Westmount School is offering

a fun, skill based hockey program for students

entering grade 5 and 6 for the 2012/2013 school year.

$400 for 60 ice times during the school day.

Please see www.westmountelementary.com

for more information

Registration begins 8:00 am Thursday, May 17

Jumpstart Day is on May 26, and leading up to it, the little red balls are once again available at Ca-nadian Tire. All money raised in Strathmore will stay in Strathmore. Deborah Dunbar (left), Fran Bos, Andrew Glubrecht, Melissa Kinloch and Shelley Orford.

Playing organized sports or being in-volved in recreational activities should be a natural part of being a kid, but it can also come with a hefty price tag.

The Canadian Tire Jumpstart Chari-ties is a registered charity that helps dis-advantaged families across the country. The Jumpstart program itself is there to help children from those families get involved in organized sports and recre-ational activities.

“So it’s a national charity but each community has its own chapter. So Strathmore has a chapter, all funds raised in Strathmore are used local-ly,” said Shelley Orford, chapter chair. Orford and her husband Randy own Strathmore’s Canadian Tire.

“It’s an amazing program, it’s very well run, and it’s helped a lot of kids. It’s something that both Randy and I are 100 per cent behind.”

In the store for the next few weeks there are red balls for sale for $2 each. Twice a year the balls are sold, which is one way funds are raised for the char-ity.

May 26 marks the official Jumpstart day. Throughout the day at the store there will be events for kids, and their parents, to enjoy. There will be a BBQ,

and a balloon pop to win prizes. It will be $1 for both a hot dog and water, and the balloon pop is also $1 per pop. All funds raised will go into Jumpstart to be used locally.

The two main prizes from the balloon pop are a trampoline and a youth bike and there are plenty of smaller prizes.

The Strathmore chapter has chapter members, different organizations that deal with youth in the community, and they are the ones that identify the kids in need and they submit claims on be-half of those kids.

“The more chapter members that we can get, the more kids we can help,” said Orford.

“What we’re finding right now is that we’re able to raise the money, people in Strathmore are very generous, we just need to get an awareness of Jump-start out there so that the families now know it’s a resource they can go to one of the chapter members if they need help.

“I’m a true believer in that program. To get kids involved in sports I think is one of the best things you can do for a kid.”

Tina’s No Frills will be supplying all of the BBQ supplies on May 26. The BBQ and events will be held from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in front of Canadian Tire.

Jumpstart helps give kids a chance to get involved

Standard school staff chose Carol mcKay and Barb Gregory as their ATA Volunteers of the Year because of the huge number of students they impact through their music program. The Christ-mas and Spring concerts allow the students the chance to “shine” for their parents and relatives. every year the school has to add more and more seating to these events because of the fantas-tic quality of the performances. Principal Karen Smith says, “We cannot thank these two ladies enough for all their donated time and expertise, no one is more deserving of such an award.” Kar-en Smith (Principal of Standard School) left, Barb Gregory and Carol mcKay.

Students from Strathmore are gear-ing up for a trip of a lifetime in their high school year.

Members from Hope Community Covenant Church’s youth group are continuing in the process of raising funds for a trip to Knoxville, Tennessee from July 15-20. Corinne Stoter, Inter-im Youth Pastor at Hope Church says there are presently “eight girls and sev-en guys registered, plus two leaders. We’ll be leaving Strathmore on July 13, and driving (40+ hours each way) to Knoxville, TN., and we’ll return July 21.”

Stoter has attended CHIC twice as a leader, and can attest to the fact that this event will be a life-changing op-portunity for the students. “To join with thousands of other teens from across North America and around the world, who are also seeking to live as followers of Jesus, is an experience that has proven to be powerful and en-couraging in a defining time of their

lives. Students come home changed, and continue to talk about the experi-ence and what they learned even years later,” says Stoter. She is excited to have the opportunity to travel with stu-dents again, and walk alongside them through this experience. They took part in a highway clean-up recently as part of their fundraising but also a s a community betterment opportunity.

Rachel Wegner, a Grade 12 student from Strathmore High school, is look-ing forward to this “once in a lifetime event.”

“I am looking forward to the differ-ent activities, worship, band perfor-mances and special speakers in the week long event,” says Wegner.

The CHIC conference is open to high school students completing Grades 9 through 12 by September of 2012.

”It is a triennial event with a hum-ble, yet rich, history beginning in 1956 when hundreds of high school age Covenanters gathered together as the Covenant High Congress,” according to the website.

The event has quickly expanded to a

much larger group gathering together, to engage in small group Bible study and devotion, large group gatherings with speakers and music, and outdoor recreation – on a larger scale.

This legacy has been carried on to become what is now “Covenant High in Christ,” best recognized as “CHIC” by the thousands who attend and tens of thousands who have attended, and continue to support this ministry.

The purpose of CHIC is to be a cata-lyst that inspires Christ-like change; challenging students to see themselves as part of something bigger and in-spiring students on the journey of following Christ. Through the years CHIC has been modified and diversi-fied, innovated and revolutionized; however, a few key elements remain, the CHIC legacy is one of continued gathering for small group Bible study and devotion, large group gatherings with speakers and music, and outdoor recreation. Praise be to God, faithful throughout the ages.

If you would like to contribute to the fundraising events, bottles and

ATB held their Teddy for a Toonie fundraiser on may 12. There was a garage sale and BBQ held outside the store. inside was the silent auction, which included a life size, or in some cases larger than life, 53” teddy bear. The silent auc-tion will be held until may 19. The Wilks family children were also at the event, and took a moment to pose with the giant teddy. Lidia (left), Steve, Alex. in front: Kylie.

Bringing back some s’more this summer!Jenna Campbell Times Contributor

After a successful trial run in 2011, the Strathmore Tri-Smore is coming back again this summer, June 23, and is expected to become an annual event.

The Tri-Smore is an athletic event that is by the community, for the community. The race celebrates healthy living and promotes active lifestyles within the Strathmore community. Accommodat-ing all age groups and fitness levels, there are four categories that participants can choose from: Full Smore (17 years plus), Half Smore (13-17 years), Quarter Smore (Under 13 years), and the Two Bit Smore(Under 8 years). Team options are available for participants as well.

All categories begin with a swim, and are followed by a bike and a run. All categories vary in distance.

The cost is $60 for adults, $20 for youth and $15 for the ‘two bit smores’. Adult teams are $150 and youth teams are $60. The price includes a swim cap, a t-shirt, and post race nourishment. If the Tri-Smore makes a profit, proceeds will be given back to the com-munity to support healthy living. The Tri-Smore broke even the preceding year, due to the initial cost of signage and equipment.

“In the younger kid’s categories, the costs are barely covered due to the price of shirts, timings and medals, so we depend on sponsorships to help out. We want to keep the race very reason-ably priced so that families and individuals can afford to do it,” said race director, Niki Johnson.

Johnson saw a great need for the Tri-Smore when she began taking her children to races in surrounding communities. The question that fuelled the fire was, “How come we aren’t doing this in Strathmore?”

The Tri-Smore had a successful turnout of 300 participants in its first year, and Johnson is anticipating 350-400 in the second. She can see it growing considerably larger in the future, due to Strathmore’s close location to Calgary and, the fact that the race accommodates all age groups and fitness levels.

“I’m excited, I’d love to see it grow bigger than that, but I’m also happy to take growth in stride. I don’t want it to get too big too fast, so we can’t handle it,” said Johnson.

For anyone who is new to the Tri-Smore and is debating wheth-er or not to try it, Johnson plainly stated, “just do it.”

“When I did my first triathlon, five or six years ago, I just de-cided that it was my year. I set the goal, I worked towards it and I trained. The Olympic distance but was what I decided to do and I did it. I felt like I conquered the world at the end, just because it was a life goal that I had. It’s empowering, it’s something that challenges you but, when you are done, you think, ‘wow, I did it!’” said Johnson.

The Tri-Smore celebrates participation in a fun and friendly environment, and can be as competitive as each individual wants it to be.

“Everyone is doing the best they can. You’re not going to be pulled off the course if you don’t meet a certain time. We just want people to be active, set a goal, work towards it and, com-plete it,” encouraged Johnson.

On the day of the Tri-Smore, you can find the race director “running the race but not running the race,” laughed Johnson.

“I’ll be there and I’ll be around, but I won’t be competing. I’m not quite to that point yet,” said Johnson.

Participants can apply online at www.tri-smore.com with a pre-ferred deadline of May 27. Applications may be received after the deadline, but will be not guaranteed a t-shirt.

A not-so-new fitness craze has taken over, and can be found almost everywhere, includ-ing right here in Strathmore. Alberto (Beto) Perez, who was trying to bring his Latin-inspired workout classes to America, is the creator of Zumba. After finally being invited to teach a Saturday morning class in Miami Perez was stuck in traffic and late to start the class. Not knowing how to say ‘I’m sorry’, he just played the music and found the class loved it, and so Zumba was born.

“It is huge, it’s like a tsunami, every health club does Zumba,” said Brigitte Lessard, own-er of Strathmore’s Curves.

Curves offers their own variation of Zumba. “When you do it with the Curves circuit the

Zumba is simplified because you can’t get in the super fancy (moves) because you only have a minute…but it’s very high energy,” said Lessard.

“When we do the Curves Zumba, now the circuit training instead of being 30 seconds is now one minute. So you do one minute on the strength training machine, and one min-ute of Zumba.”

Curves Zumba is for women only, and is available to anyone who has a Curves mem-bership. The youngest member participating in the workout is 13, and the oldest is over 70.

“A lot of people say it’s the perfect workout because it does your strength training, your cardio, your brain, everything. And we try to keep within the 30 minutes as well. That’s one of the big things about Curves is the workouts are 30 minutes because women are busy…the whole Curves concept has always been to keep it 30 minutes,” said Lessard.

“Let’s face it, it gets boring to do the same routine all the time. So with the Zumba what happens is now you’re learning something new, but we do the routine for maybe six weeks and then we switch everything. We get a whole new set, with new songs, new dance, so it keeps it fresh.”

On Monday nights Zumba is being taught by Lessard and Vicki Lou Hofer, who are both certified instructors. Wednesday nights will be with new instructor Tracey Stokoe, and there will be a Saturday morning Zumba class offered as well.

To find out more about Curves Zumba con-tact them at 403-901-1144. Lessard said any-one who mentions hearing about it from this article will get a free week to try it out.

Zumba is also offered for both men and women through Wheatland Further Educa-tion.

“Anytime people come to us with ideas or courses or sessions that they would like to see happen in Strathmore and the surround-ing area we always try and do that. We had several requests for Zumba, so we just went ahead and it went over very well,” said Joyce Bazant.

To register with Wheatland Further Educa-tion call them at 403-934-5785.

It will be exciting and competitive softball in Strathmore from Aug. 9 to 12 when the Western Canadian Fastpitch Softball Champion-ships will be hosted.

The girls Bantam ‘A’ Bos-ton Pizza (BP) Thunder team is the host for the event.

“Being the host just adds excitement to the team and they realize that all year. Ev-ery time they go on the field it has a meaning. All season playing primarily higher age teams (Midget, Jr and Inter-mediate Women’s) will al-ways keep them ready,” said Lanky Johnson, coach and manager for the team, in an e-mail interview.

The team began play in the Calgary Women’s Fast-ball league on May 2, and has been practicing indoors

throughout the winter and attending indoor clinics since February.

The BP Thunder won the Alberta U16 ‘B’ provincials last year, and hosting the western championship sets the stage for a higher level of play for all the girls in the league to aspire to, said Johnson, who is also girls di-rector for the league.

The championship will feature 16 teams, with two boys and two girls teams coming from each western province.

Admission to the tourna-ment will be free for anyone under 18 years old.

Johnson said he is hopeful the community will get in-volved with the event.

“Help is always wanted and needed, you can never have enough.”

Boston Pizza is the main sponsor for the team and the

Strathmore to host Western Canadian U16 Fastpitch Softball Championships

event. This is not the first time Strathmore

has hosted softball championships. The Western Canadian Pee Wee Champion-ships were hosted by Calgary Minor Softball two years ago and Strathmore assisted. The Jr. ‘B’ Women’s Champi-onship was also hosted in the past, ac-cording to Johnson.

For more information about the event, or to get involved, visit the league web-site at strathmorefastpitch.com.

ObituariesTHOMAS, Shirley AliceIt is with great sadness we announce the passing of our Wife, Mother and Grandmother in the presence of her loved ones on May 9, 2012. Shirley passed away peacefully at the age of 82 years after some time of ill health. Shirley was born in Calgary, Alberta, the first child of Alex and Alice Warrack on August 14, 1929. After growing up in the Strathmore area she moved to Langdon and finished school. With her interest in the clothing business, Shirley attended SAIT. On December 1, 1951 Shirley married the love of her life, David Thomas, and they began to raise their family in the Langdon area where they were busy farming and in the real estate business for years before retiring. Shirley was a member of the Langdon Rebekahs for 62 years volunteering a lot of her time to the community through fundraisers, teas and the famous turkey dinners. She loved the opportunity the Rebekahs gave her to travel around the province meeting new people and visiting with established friends. Shirley never met anyone she did not like or that did not like her. Shirley was also very involved with the Women’s Institute, being a long time member. She would travel with the WI for conferences going to places like Nova Scotia and Ireland. Shirley enjoyed traveling as she took a cruise to Puerto Rico and Barbados and flew to Scottsdale to visit her daughter. Shirley’s love of singing kept her busy entertaining at various functions like weddings, anniversaries and Christmas parties. Her great passion was singing and playing with the little children. She carried this passion onto her three grandsons, always ready to run after a bike, build lego giants and cheer on the boys at a hockey game. Shirley was predeceased by her infant daughter Lynn Shirley Thomas and her daughter Katherine Alice Hochhaus. She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, David Thomas, her daughter Susan and husband Lance Collins and their three boys Kory, Travis and Kyle and her son-in-law Steve Hochhaus. Shirley also leaves behind her two sisters Norma and Doug Hilton and family, Margaret and Cecil Graham and family, and her brother Allan and Jean Warrack and family. Many thanks go to Dr. Ben Sader and staff for their care and help over the years and also to the staff at the Strathmore Hospital for all their help at a difficult time. Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 14, 2012 at Wheatland Funeral Chapel, Strathmore at 2:00 p.m. To send condolences please visit www.wheatlandfuneralhome.ca. In lieu of flowers donations may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society (200, 325 Manning Rd. NE, Calgary, AB T2E 2P5).
