Dear Supporter,

Last year on our third anniversary I asked you all to stay with us tohelp us celebrate our fourth anniversary. A blink of the eye and herewe are one year later. We are so grateful for those who have stayed.Without your help we would not have been able to care for the 435 pigswho call Ironwood home.

With the passage of time comes changes. Due to my car accident, I havebeen absent from the sanctuary for four full months and am onlygradually regaining strength and returning to the sanctuary these pasttwo months. I am happy to say that I have made a nearly full recoveryand look forward to many more years with our dear pigs.

Ironwood will soon be saying goodbye to Donna who has been with ussince Ironwood was but a dream in all of our hearts. We will beforever grateful for all of her hard work and her dedication to all thepigs at Ironwood. Thank you Donna. We could not have done it withoutyou.

Sanctuary life is not easy physically or emotionally. Our bodies wearout from the constant beating and bruising they take from working toomany hours. Our emotions are forever on a roller coaster. One day wesave an animal from sure death by removing them from an abusivesituation or from a shelter where they would soon be put down, and thenext we are making the final drive to our vet crying all the way andtelling our dear friend who is about to pass over to what we hope is abetter place how much we love them and how much we will miss them atIronwood. But there are rewards and they are spiritual. We all havedifferent ways of fulfilling our spirituallives and for giving meaning to our life hereon this earth. For me it has been mydedication to helping animals of all kinds.I look forward to continuing that for yearsto come.

Sincerely,

Mary SchanzPresidentCo-Founder

ome of you I have met inperson here at thesanctuary, many I’ve

corresponded with through thesponsorship program, emails orphone calls. For those that don’tknow me, I am the on-sitemanager of the Ironwood PigSanctuary. I have been involvedwith the sanctuary from the verybeginning. So much of my heartand soul has gone into thebuilding of this beautiful, wonderful place that so many pigscall home and that I have calledhome for the past four years. Now comes the time for me to saygoodbye to the place that hasmeant so much to me. Forpersonal and physical reasons, this summer I will be moving onto start the next chapter of my lifewith my husband and my animals(including several pigs!). Thishas been a very difficult andemotional decision for me. Thethought of leaving behind the pigsthat I love so dearly is painful butnecessary. I just wanted thisopportunity to let all of you knowhow much I have appreciatedyour help and support in caring

Pinto was abandoned in Catalina, AZ when his caregivers moved on without him andPima Animal Care Center picked him up. They released him to us on January 20, 2004.We picked him up on his final day at the center. As you can see from his picture he isa very handsome sweet pig. We don’t know his age but we know he is no youngsterand he is lame. We put him in our Assisted Living Phase II field and he lives acomfortable happy life there with many other old and lame folks.

Goodbye Donnaronwood is preparing to saygoodbye to Donna who hasbeen with us since

or us pigs, thesummertime blues arebrought on by those

hot, hot temperatures! It’sreally tough for us in the heat.We can’t sweat or pant torelease body heat. The onlyway to keep cool is to take adip in a pool or mud wallow.

For those of us here atIronwood, we have people totake care of our needs.Because we live in the desert, there are few trees to providenatural shade. Staff andvolunteers have built lots of

shade ramadas of various sizesto give us piggies a cool placeto hang out and take naps.Every ramada has at least onemud wallow and a pool. Thebig ones have several wallowsand pools so lots of us can cooloff without having to wait inline.

There are also pools and mudwallows scattered all over thefields. People come by threetimes every single day to cleanand refill the pools and put waterin the wallows. If you go up tothem while they’re cleaning andlook real cute, they’ll even sprayyou with the hose! That feelsgreat!

Now, for those of you pigs thatdon’t live at Ironwood, tell yourowners that Laverne says youneed two important things tomake it through the summer;shade and water. Let them knowthat pools and wallows arewanted. I know a nice ladynamed Holly who adopted fivepigs from Ironwood that hasdifferent wallows. She alternateswhich ones she fills each daybefore going to work so that theynever get stinky and algae doesn’tgrow in them. I think that’s agreat idea! Maybe some of youother owners out there have some

ideas and suggestions to makesummer a fun and safe time for

pigs. That’s it for now. Stay cool!---Laverne

My mom, dad, three brothersand I were dumped in the desertwhere we wandered arounduntil we found a ranch wherethere was food and water. Therancher didn’t like us eating hisanimals’ food, so the peoplefrom Ironwood came andhelped him catch us (we didn’tmake it easy though!). Now weall are living safe and happy atthe sanctuary.

Angel and Precious-------

Angel and Precious have beenwith us since July of 2002,arriving when they were fivemonths old. They came here withtheir dad, Bernie, their mom,Princess and their sister,Cinderella. Princess died shortlyafter her arrival. She waspregnant when she arrived andhad severe spinal trouble andcouldn’t even stand. Bernie is

living in our North field.Cinderella has been adopted.Angel and Precious live togetherin our Main field and are the bestof friends, seldom far apart fromone another.

Angel and Precious are now threeyears old. Angel is a beautifullittle girl, black with a tan streakon the tips of her mane just likeher dad. She is very sweet andloves to be petted, have her ears

scratched and get belly rubs.Precious looks much like Angelbut with very little tan on hermane. She is more skittish andwary of people. Angel wouldmake a wonderful, loving pet butcould never be separated from herless tame sister. They areperfectly happy here with lots ofpiggy friends and plenty of openspace.

Meet Our Pigs

Arnold-------------------------

The latest Arnold, one of four pigs

residing at Ironwoodwith that name, arrivedthis past December. His owners abandonedhim when they movedfrom their rental homein Prescott and left himbehind. The newtenants did not wanthim there because oftheir horses. Accord-ing to the neighbors,Arnold is at least 10

years old. He arrived overweight, with extremely scaly skin, thinhair and very long hooves. We

immediately gave him a muchneeded and long overdue hooftrim. Arnold received a lot ofbrushing and rubbing to removethe dry scales from his skin. He istaking a hair and skin conditionertwice daily. I just don’tunderstand how someone couldabandon a pig like Arnold. He isso sweet and lovable. He adoreshaving his belly rubbed andwould like nothing more than tohave us sit with him all day to pethim and talk to him. Arnoldwould make a wonderfulcompanion.

Our SponsorsThe sponsorship program at Ironwood is a vital part of our financial income. Withoutour sponsors, we would not be able to care for so many needy pigs. Some sponsorswho live far away have sent treats, blankets, medicines, gift cards for pools and extradonations for pigs with heavy medical expenses. Other sponsors have come to visittheir pigs in person, bringing treats and gifts. Squeaky’s sponsor, Ruth, came all theway from Illinois to see her on what turned out to be a cold, rainy day. Erroll, whosponsors Inky, Iggy and Izzy, made his second yearly visit to see his boys. This timehe brought his sister and brother-in-law and a car full of donated items! Kristin andAndrew also made a second visit to hang out with Boudreaux and hand feed himcereal and cookies. Yum! Sassy and Hazel’s sponsor, Lisa, came from Californiaand stayed for a week in the spare bedroom at the visitor center to volunteer and getto know her girls better. I am very thankful and proudof all our sponsors for supporting their pigs sofaithfully. The pigs need you and love you!

A monthly donation of $30 provides for the food, water, shelter and health care needs of your pig. Inreturn, you receive letters and pictures about your pigkeeping your informed of how they are doing and whatis happening in his or her life. Please join our familyof sponsors and become a part of a very importantgroup. --- Donna

ere at Ironwood, we haveneutered all of our malepigs to prevent breeding

and reduce their aggressivetendencies. Because our fundsand veterinarian time are limitedwe have not been able to spay allof our females, only those goingout for adoption or any that havemedical problems. It is our hopeto one day be able to spay all theresident females at the sanctuary. We strongly encourage anyonewith a female pet pig to have her

spayed at an early age, preferablyaround 3-6 months.

Spaying will serve threepurposes.

First and most important to petowners and sanctuaries, currentstudies show an escalatingnumber of problems for olderfemales who have not beenspayed. We have witnessed theevidence of cancer, tumors andgrowths such as leiomyomas withseveral of our females. Manytimes there are no outwardsymptoms of any problems. For

example, Regina wasrecently taken in to theHumane Society who hasbeen spaying two femaleseach month for the past year. She had a baseball-sizedtumor in her uterus but hadshown no signs ofdiscomfort or problems. Itwas just luck that she waschosen to go in for spaying. We have had a couple of ourolder girls that have notmade it through surgerybecause their tumors and/orgrowths had become tooextensive. Others have hadhuge tumors removed andare now doing fine but hadto suffer through prolongedand difficult recoveryperiods. Another reason tospay at an early age is that

older, heavier pigs tend to bemore of an anesthetic risk.

Spaying at an early age canprevent future problems andsuffering for females.

Second, females chosen foradoption will already have beenspayed, thus having no delay inbeing placed in their new homes.Currently it may take one or twomonths to get a surgery datescheduled, perform the surgery, and then wait for recovery beforea female can go to her new home.

Third, some females showexcessive behavior changesduring their cycles, which occurevery month. A few becomeaggressive and are a danger toother pigs and to our staff andvisitors during these periods.Spaying will alleviate thosebehavioral changes and make asafer environment for allconcerned. So, for those of youwho have pet pigs, spaying at anearly age is strongly recommen-ded. If you do not have pigs andwould like to help our females, please make a donation for spaysurgeries.

I love having four pigs. I loveseeing them all walking aroundthe property munching on theweeds. I throw chicken scratcharound, which they love and itkeeps them busy searching forpieces. They have a shaded poolthat they know to check forchicken scratch and a quick cooloff. I just think there’s nothingcuter than seeing a pig sitting in apool watching the sun go by!Occasionally they walk up to sayhi and I give them a belly rub or aback rub, whichever they prefer. They each have their own housealthough I’m working on twomore that will be nicer and moreunique. All their houses arecarpeted and full of blankets, which they love. It’s so cute tosee them wrapped up.

There are still pigs I would love to

have and I wish I had room for,but I know they’re happy and verywell cared for at the sanctuary soa belly rub will have to do. Somany pigs come to the sanctuaryand sometimes it makes me sad tosee a really sweet one without afamily. There are so many tochoose from; all shapes, sizes andpersonalities. Please consideradoption!

i. My name is Jenny andI love pigs. I went fromfull time to part time at

the sanctuary so I could spendmore time with my animals. Ihave had my pig, Happy, since hewas six weeks old. He’s an oldman now, but I still call him mybaby.

When I found the sanctuary, Iknew I had room for a couplemore pigs and was so excited atgetting to know the pigs andpicking some out. I picked a cutegray one named Mikey who was anew arrival. I then picked a littlepink spotted girl named Tashawho was shy of eating with somany other pigs. My last pickcame while I was working at thesanctuary. He’s a very handsomeblack pig that I named Casanovabecause he is such a lover.

Casey’s New Homeasey is a 10 1/2 year oldwhite pig whose snoutwas injured and mostly

removed several years ago. Oneday last September, I accompan-ied Mary on her mission totransport Casey from his home toa new home that had beenarranged by the former owner. When we all got to the new homewe were unanimously unhappywith it and worried that Casey’sspecial needs (such as shade toprevent his white skin fromburning in the desert sun) would

not be met. So we did not leavehim there, which essentially lefthim in Mary’s car with no place togo. He lived his life in a smallyard under a big shady tree, with alittle shed for shelter. It just sohappens that I have a small yardwith a big shady tree and a littleshaded shed with a cool dirt floor.I built a little house for him tosleep in when it’s cold out andCasey lives at my house now.

always like to give you anupdate on our Annex to letyou know how our

Ironwood extension is doing. We

have had an active winter. Mostimportantly, Ben and one of ourfaithful volunteers, John havecompleted an extension of thewater system and renovated the

Other projectshave included new roofs forshelters, shelves in the barn, afloor and shelves have beenadded to our donated storageshed and now everything has aplace of its own. We have builtnew shade ramadas with wallowsto provide all of our pigs therewith the two essentials forsummer, water and shade. Wehave been very lucky to haveSharon, Bobbie, Angie, Lisa, andLynne this winter to help out withwatering and clean up. ButBobbie and Sharon have returnedto their summer homes and we

need more help to keep thingsclean. We always welcomevolunteers. continue to do my best toplace the pigs in new homeswho are recent releases to

Ironwood. We have had somegreat successes so far this year.Bogey, Epson, Nina, Billy andStella, Ben and Jerry, Cupid, Leon,Murphy, Dennis Rodman andWilly (AKA Oscar and Meyer),Daphne and Fiona and Jules have

all found new good homes. Butthe need for homes is alwaysgreater than the demand for pigs,at least to good homes. Some ofthese pigs are old, Bogey nearly 10and Epson 12, and difficult toplace, but some kind people in ournetwork are willing to help withour special pigs. Cougar, with

Snakes and Critters AnimalSanctuary has brought Epson hometo join Neevis and Wilbur. MaryEvans has been especially good tous. She has taken a total of ninepigs, all of which would have beendifficult to adopt, and she providesthem a very spacious field with nicewarm shelters. We in turn help herby trimming her pigs when we gothere and have helped by providingsome of her shelters. Mary, likeTina Benson who adopted six pigsfrom us in the past, lives in thefoothills of the ChiricahuaMountains, a beautiful setting forpeople and pigs alike. Jenny, one ofour employees, took three home tojoin her one pig. And Donna, whowill be living nearby with land oftheir own, will be taking a few ofher favorites and ones with specialneeds home with her. Without thehelp of people like these we wouldhave had to turn away many whohave called in need of a home fortheir pigs.

I have to set priorities. The mostcommon reason we get for releasedpigs is that the pig’s life is in danger

or someone is moving. If theowners have tried elsewherewithout success to place their pig,I move them to the top of the list.Others who simply want to placetheir pigs in a new home for no

compelling reason sometimeshave a long wait as I search for anappropriate home. With fewexceptions, Ironwood will nottake in a new pig without having aprospective home for them to goto. Therefore, if any of you, oursupporters, especially in AZ haveconsidered adopting a pig or twoplease contact me. I still havemany sweet pigs who are waitingfor a home they can call theirown. ---Mary

I used to live at a place that rescued cats and dogs. When my owner had to move all her animals to anew home, my best friend, Pearl and I came to liveat Ironwood. We live in the Special Needs fieldbecause we didn’t really like living in a big herdand needed a smaller place to feel comfortable.
