a letter from the executive DirectorAs many of you are aware, Teton County is gradually climbing out of the recession that the nation has been experiencing. For example, a recent report from the Wyoming Office of Tourism has shown an increase in visitor spending of 12% and travel and tourism jobs by 4% in 2011 over 2010 in Teton County. Our sales tax numbers show an increase of 7% for July through February 2011 over the same months in 2010. Real estate sales have been increasing steadily in certain price ranges in the Teton County market. While these and other sectors of our local economy become stronger and others not as much, it is important for us to learn the lessons of the recession, including the business practices that worked for businesses to survive and in some cases, thrive. We cannot expect to achieve different results as businesses and an economy going forward if we conduct business and see our economy as in the past. As described elsewhere in this newsletter, Teton County has been selected by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) to be one of the few destinations in the world that will participate in its program to implement the most widely accepted sustainable tourism criteria and standards. This is an excellent opportunity for our community to evolve our tourism-based economy into an economy that integrates our tourism industry policies and practices with the environmental, social, and economic sustainability principles contained in the GSTC’s standards. It is an opportunity to integrate our community’s environmental, social, and economic values into the policies and practices of our businesses, organizations, and government. Participation in this program is being led by the Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce and would not be possible without the financial and in-kind support of the following businesses and organizations:

events designed to increase tourist traffic and spending. Governance & Planning piloted •the Chamber through adopting new bylaws, board restructuring and garnering a four-star rating from the U.S. Chamber of CommerceGovernment & Community •Affairs enabled Jackson Hole to be one of a handful of destinations worldwide to be included in an early adopter program of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. The Executive committee has worked hard to •align the Chamber with the Jackson Hole Travel & Tourism board efforts to attract and service valley visitors. In the current environment, lodging tax dollars are an extremely important part of our destination’s overall effort to market shoulder and winter seasons.

Looking to next fiscal year, I want to introduce the people who want seats on the Chamber board and list those who wish to stand for reelection. The executive committee is recommending approval of this slate of candidates. Once the votes are compiled, we will welcome the slate to the board in July. Proposed new members to the board are John Morgan, Dialogue Business Strategy, Inc; Oly Olson, Jackson Hole Real Estate Associates; and Levi Thorn,

Grand Teton Lodge Company. Those who plan to return for second terms are Stephan Abrams, The Liquor Store; Julie Faupel, Jackson Hole Real Estate Associates; Tim Harland, Snake River Brewing Co.; Jeff Rousch, Wyoming Outfitters; Scott Smith, One to One Wellness; Jim Webb, Lower Valley Energy. Joining the Board’s Executive Committee as Treasurer is Mike Halpin of Lost Creek Ranch and the Meridian Group. Some dedicated folks are

leaving our board after years of service and I’d like to recognize their contributions. Thank you John Rutter, Carrie Boynton, Andria Clancy, Amanda Flosbach and Diana Waycott. We appreciate our returning board members’ hard work. Through their work and support of Chamber staff, we’re well positioned to advocate for Jackson Hole businesses. In closing, I want to make sure you know your membership in the Chamber matters. With your ongoing support and the recruitment efforts of the staff and board, the Chamber’s membership is now at an all-time high. This month, we welcomed our 901st member and we’re still growing. Let’s make it a great summer of commerce for all.

jackson hole chamber of commerce recognized with Four star accreditation

The Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce received a Four Star Accreditation by the US Chamber of Commerce. This places the Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce in the top 2% of 6,936 chambers of commerce in the United States. The Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce is the only accredited chamber of commerce in Wyoming and part of an elite group of 152 chambers of commerce nationwide that have been validated by

the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Accreditation Program as “having solid programs, demonstrating clear organizational procedures, and as being a catalyst for positive action in the community.” The US Chamber of Commerce states that “The Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce has demonstrated a good track record of operating a successful chamber and achieving desirable results for its members. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is proud to accredit the Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce with our 4-Star designation. Congratulations on this remarkable achievement!” The Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce improved upon its 2006 Three Star Accreditation. Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tim O’Donoghue stated, “Since 2006, we have worked at continuous improvement of our Member services, organizational capabilities and performance, and effectiveness at

championing the interests of local businesses, enhancing their prosperity, strengthening the economic climate of Teton County, and being an active contributor to the interests of business in the State of Wyoming. We have received this accreditation and recognition through a rigorous process conducted by a panel of industry experts and leaders. While we may never fully meet the accreditation criteria of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce because of our non-partisan, non-endorsement of political candidates, we are pleased to have received this accreditation and high-level recognition of our work and organization. I also believe our accreditation is a reflection of the excellence present in our business and overall community.” For more information on the Accreditation of the Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce, please contact Tim O’Donoghue at 307.733.3316 or [email protected].

standing Tall: chamber supports business leadership Training The University of Wyoming College Of Business and the Center for Cowboy Ethics and Leadership have joined forces with the Wyoming Chamber Partnership to offer a leadership program which uses “The Code of the West” as its organizing concept. The goal of the program is to inspire Wyoming’s businesspeople to serve as principled leaders in their companies, industries, and communities at large. “We wanted to underscore the point that what matters are actions . . . not words,” says Jim Owen, founder of the Center for Cowboy Ethics and Leadership and best-selling author of the Code of the West trilogy: “Cowboy Ethics,” “Cowboy Values,” and “The Try.” “For companies as well as individuals, it’s not enough to espouse a code. You have to strive to live by it each and every day.” The following individuals, businesses, and organizations have demonstrated a commitment to leadership and ethics in business policies and practices by attending a Standing Tall In an Upside Down World – Code of the West workshop and signing their certificate. The certificate contains a pledge to “Live my code each day; finding tangible ways to put my principles into action; being a role model for principled leadership; and giving of myself in community service.”
