By the time this newsletter lands in mail boxes across the west, the first recipient heifers will already be in their pens. With their arrival and through a new initiative called Boviteq-West the historical barns at Westgen will once again become a focal point for ongoing genetic leadership in the west. Boviteq-West has been launched so that western Canadian cattle producers can participate more easily in the cutting edge arena of In-vitro Fertilization technology.

Boviteq-West is a joint venture between Westgen and Abbotsford Veterinary Clinic and will operate as a franchise of L’Alliance Boviteq (Boviteq), an IVF leader located in Quebec. By way of a share in the ownership of Semex and hence Boviteq, producers already have a stake in this company, but through this franchise it will become easier for western producers to participate in this emerging field as well. In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) involves the harvest of oocytes directly from the ovary and then creating a fertilization and embryo outside the body (‘in-vitro’ literally translating to ‘in-glass’). IVF technology has advanced in leaps and bounds over the past decade, and while conventional flushing on-farm still produces a higher percentage of the

industry’s overall embryo production, IVF is growing rapidly and is a strategic tool utilized by many producers on their high value animals. Why? IVF can be conducted every 14 days. What’s more, the IVF procedure can continue even when an animal is pregnant up to 4 months.

Canadian dairy producers should be proud of Boviteq, the Canadian company having pioneered many of the IVF protocols that have become the industry standard. Furthermore research conducted by Boviteq gets at least some of the credit for why pregnancy rates on frozen IVF embryos now rival that of conventional embryos. Boviteq-West will operate

under the gold standard of excellence provided by Boviteq.

The Boviteq-West concept utilizes the many gains that have been made with cow and oocyte preparation that allow eggs harvested from western-based cows to be shipped in a controlled medium to Boviteq for processing. Fertilized embryos are then returned to Boviteq-West for implantation in its recipients. Once confirmed pregnant, those recipients are shipped to the producer. Boviteq-West will also make available donor housing, if required.

Who should consider using IVF?

The IVF process comes with a cost, thus attracting only the very best animals whose embryos command a significant premium from the market. Still, when all the advantages are considered, more and more producers are making the determination to invest in IVF rather than conventional flushing. Some of the industry’s brightest young stars have achieved such high prices because they can generate a bigger return more quickly thanks to IVF. In some cases over 50 embryos have been produced by the time the heifer calves for the first time – and still close to 24 months of age! The ability to use “reverse sorted” semen is a big advantage as well with IVF. Reverse sorted semen takes conventional frozen straws, thaws them and then sorts them. This option only exists for IVF embryo production, but significantly increases the number of live females that can be generated from the harvested eggs.

Another area where the IVF option has gained favor is for show cows that can continue to have eggs harvested while pregnant and without skipping a year on the show circuit. Again, reverse sorted semen helps maximize female

David Yoxall: point-man for Boviteq-West

David was brought up on a family dairy farm in the north west of the United Kingdom.

While continuing his involvement in the family’s 80 cow dairy David began augmenting his skill set by becoming accomplished in many different areas of cattle reproduction, embryo transfer, and the education of others in both areas. Employed with Embyonics in the UK, David honed his skills and eventually made this his full time occupation after dispersing the herd in 2007. David’s journey then took another major step with his appointment at Morsan Farms in Alberta. There he oversaw the development and management of show cows like Seisme-Red and Missy, and managed the ever expanding embryo transfer program.

In appointing David as Boviteq-West’s IVF Manager, it is expected the new joint venture will benefit from the wealth of experience he brings to the logistical aspects of the IVF process and of the care and management required to maximize pregnancy results from both donors and recipients. Working alongside Dr. Rich Vanderwal and his team, it is expected that Boviteq-West has a strong point-man in David Yoxall and will be up and running quickly as a result. Boviteq-West is open for business and David can be contacted at 1-800-657-5613.

production from these animals. What’s more, many producers with such animals recognize the benefit in making “show age” calves, but simply do not have sufficient recipients of their own to do so. The Boviteq-West recipient option can be instrumental in assisting with that strategy whether they are IVF or conventional embryos.

The IVF technology is primarily used by top breeders today and on high value females. Some producers might conclude that this is an elite technology that has little application for ordinary producers. In fact there are many who believe that IVF will become a mainstream technology much like the use of sexed semen. In the initial stages it requires a leap of faith and investment, but the expectation is that Boviteq-West will eventually be a source of great pride for the west.

Top 10 Advantages with IVF:

1. The interval between flushes is much shorter – just 14 days

2. Lactating donors can be flushed earlier in lactation

3. Pregnant cows can continue to be flushed to 100 days pregnant and sometimes beyond

4. Heifers can be enrolled at a younger age than with conventional flushing – 9 months

5. With larger egg harvests the choice can be made to use multiple sires

6. Frozen IVF embryos now achieve comparable pregnancy rates to conventional

7. Reverse sorted semen maximizes female creation from sires not typically offered sexed

8. Reverse sorted semen can eliminate need for a biopsy to verify sex of embryo

9. Expensive semen can be used across multiple donors even after reverse sorting

10. Cows producing many unfertilized embryos via conventional often achieve better results with IVF

It has been Westgen’s intent to create an annual event that would bring dairy producers from the four western provinces together once a year. Those days which include the societal require-ment of holding an annual general meeting of members have been re-named as Westgen Days. After all, the annual meeting is but a small part of the event. This year’s Westgen days, held in Chilliwack, BC saw producers from all four provinces listen to and gain valuable insight from 4 invited speakers plus enjoy a day of farms tours. Out-of-town participants in the Westgen Days program gathered on Monday March 25th for a wine and cheese reception where producers had an opportunity to socialize with producers from other provinces and with Westgen and Semex staff. The following morning the same producers plus many more from the BC lower mainland gathered for the annual meeting. There they heard about Westgen’s successful 2012 business year where a small operating profit was realized.

With Semex profit share and investment returns included, Westgen’s income for the year was just under $750,000. A table outlining credits returned directly to producers was shared to underscore Westgen’s ongoing support of breed improvement initiatives.

Brad Sayles, Semex VP Global Sales & Marketing provided an update on the global markets Semex products continue to be well received in. In fact it was a record year for Semex in terms of doses sold and on total revenue generated.

Mike West, the designated sire analyst for western Canada, provided an overview of the company’s product development initiatives, strategies and summarized how bull purchases are being made, where they come from and through this, how the industry is changing, how producer breeding strategies are changing.

Tuesday afternoon saw three invited speakers provide educational present-ations for producers. André Barnabé provided a picture of In-vitro Fertilization technology and how dramatically its advances are aiding genetic advancement strategies in Canada and how through Boviteq-West, producers in western Canada can soon participate more easily. Dr. Gordon Atkins provided a presentation on the role of Conformation Evaluation in an era dominated by genomics. This presentation communicated the importance of breeding for structurally sound cattle as much to provide a benchmarking tool on-farm for producers as to add to the reference population via daughter proven sire information. The last speaker on the day was Brad Sayles who provided a summary of the High Immune Response research work that lead to the launch of the Immunity+ brand at Semex. The day ended with a

producer dinner and a comedy act to end the day on a lighter note.

Wednesday March 27th was a day for primarily the out-of-town guests to visit several interesting dairies. Nathan Creek Farms was first on the day where producers could see a modern herd with exceptional organization and management in action and how Westgen’s full service AI technician program is contributing value to the herd’s bottom line. UBC provided a more research focused stop where Dr. Dan Weary provided a summary of the research being conducted at the research centre. Farm Manager Nelson Dinn provided a tour of the facilities and discussed the key projects underway and practical conclusions producers can draw from them. The last stop on the day was to the farm of Tom and Laury DeGroot, a herd meticulously run and with many top calibre cattle to be seen.

Westgen Days is an annual event that draws together progressive-minded producers from the four western provinces. We encourage participation and would welcome your early request to reserve a spot for next year’s program.

May 20136

Breeding Red & White Holsteins has been on the upswing for the last decade in Canada, with record numbers of red and white animals being registered in the herdbook the last few years. Approximately 2.5% of animals registered have red coat colour and over 15% of black and white cattle carry the red gene. The Semex line-up has greatly aided the proliferation of the red gene in the Canadian Holstein population in the last 10 years through the marketing of such complete bulls like Talent, September Storm, Mr Burns, Tribute, Salto and Picolo. However, the limited population of Red & White cattle means that breeders need to be vigilant about finding sires with different pedigrees to continue developing their red families. The April 2013 Westgen proof sheet features more red or red carrier options than ever with 7 Red or RC sires, of which 6 are new additions.

The #1 new release LPI sire, Regan-ALH Diplomat, is a red-carrying Class Extra sire that traces back to the tremendous Markwell Bstar E Raven, as a Mr Burns son of her great-granddaughter A-L-H Destiny VG-87 GMD DOM. 2905 GLPI earns him the 7th spot on the LPI list. Diplomat offers a very balanced proof and true to his pedigree is an impressive production transmitter with 1382 kg of milk, and 73 kg of protein. His +10 conformation profile is highlighted by 8 on fore attachment, 9 for rear attachment width, 11 for set of rear legs, and an astounding 12 for chest width. The O Man influence is evident in his functional traits of 106 Herd Life, 2.81 SCS and 101 Daughter Fertility.

Claynook Tennessee, another red carrying Mr Burns son lands in the 34th spot on the LPI list. From an 89 pt Goldwyn dam and then the Allen poster-girl, Claynook Tammy Allen VG-87 8*, Tennessee offers a true source of conformation improvement that earns him a Robot Ready designation. At +13 for type, he transmits soft and well supported udders, steep feet, openness of rib, and rumps with a consistently correct slope (+10 pin setting). An exceptional health trait profile is complemented by double digit positive deviations for both fat (+.15) and protein (+.18).

It’s not often a true red sire lands in the top half of the proof sheet bulls when they’re sorted by LPI, but Greenlea Artie Red has accomplished that impressive feat. A Mr Burns son from the beautiful full sister to Million $ Apple Red, KHW Regiment Ariel Red VG-89-4YR-CAN, Artie was a highly anticipated new release due to 75% of his first crop daughters scoring GP or better, and 8 already achieving Very Good. Artie is an exceptional feet and leg improver with a nice production index of 47 kg protein and 36 kg fat.

The Semex Genomax offering is a great source of red and red carrier sires with unique pedigrees. Sandy-Valley Chipper-P RDC tops the list and appeals to the polled niche that many breeders that focus on red also try to satisfy. This Colt-P Red (Lawnboy x Bolton) son from a Planet dam, that descends from the Ralma Juror Faith family, has DGV indexes higher than his GPA for LPI (2771) and Conformation (10). Lookout P Survivor Red is a Magna-P son from the showy Charpentier Mr Burns Sisi VG-86-2YR-CAN. Survivor is the #1 GPA LPI bull in Canada at 2738, with a 2803 Direct Genomic Value on LPI. A red bull that’s been receiving a lot of attention thanks to the popularity of both his sire, Semex Genomax bull, Willsbro Larson RDC, and his incredible dam, Luck-E Advent Asia EX-92-USA (maximum score), is Luck-E Adonis Red. Adonis has a GPA of 95kg combined fat and protein, and 13 for conformation.

The thrill of birthing a red and white calf doesn’t grow old for many dairy producers and their families. The increased popularity of reds has helped to diversify the gene pool and rapidly improve the quality of Holstein genetics available to red breeders. With the heavy usage of red carrying sires in western Canada over the last decade, there are many cows with the red gene in most herds. Your Westgen Rep would be glad to recommend which of these new sires would make a great addition to your breeding program and just might deliver that next anticipated red calf.

Genomax bulls are generally not subtle about their motives – theyhave their sights firmly set on replacing their dad on the proof sheet. They watch and learn, improving on failings of the previous genera-tion and much like polling to a politician, it’s practically written in thecards when they hit the street. They simply stack the odds in theirfavour and like a thief in the night slowly but surely go about stakingtheir turf. Seagull-Bay Phantom is certainly such a Genomax bull. Heuses the popularity of his sire Windbrook, and then takes it to adifferent level thanks to strong support from his Planet dam.

On the surface Phantom would seem to have his job cut out forhim. After all, it is hard to pin-point failings in his ultra-popular sireWindbrook. Still, with support from one of the hottest cow families inthe breed, in Phantom we believe Windbrook has met his match.More milk is the biggest difference – nearly an extra 1,000kg shouldbe expected, and higher protein content in that milk too.
