First of all I would like to complement all of last year’sshow participants for how they handled themselvesduring the show plus those who picked up after the show. The city was clean enough at the end so that it did notlook like anyone even had a show there. You guys shouldbe proud of yourselves.

Again this year we will be holding the car show in Osseo,MN on Saturday, May 11. Placement begins at 9 and theshow at 10. Featured club cars are encouraged to arriveprior to 8:30 to avoid the rush. See more on that below. We have a lot of irons in the fire working with the city ofOsseo and organizing volunteers to run the show.

The show this year will be pretty much the same as lastyear with the following changes, there will be a Craft Fairin the park while the show is going on plus the OsseoBusiness Association will also have to a spot on the southside of 5th street along the park to display theirinformation. On 4th street, there will be a vendor wagonalong the curb. Other than that, the place is ours.

ALSO… There will be construction going onduring the show on 93rd Avenue at 169. It isadvisable to enter from the south or north off of 169, then

follow County Road 81. We plan on putting signs out tohelp you find your way in. A map is available on the nextpage and for download at InterMarque.org.

The entrance to the show will be off of 5th Street N.W. donot attempt to enter the show area from any other streetas the others will be barricaded.

PARKING UPDATE: At the last InterMarque Councilmeeting we spent quite a bit of time discussing parking. The decision was made to revise the parking. Since theparking in front of the City Hall and around the park isconsidered the prime area, this year all participating clubswill get THREE SPOTS to park around the park and alongCentral avenue. Club members other than the threepicked for around/near the park will park on a first come, first served basis throughout the show area. This will give

each club a manageable zone to show their best cars andencourage interest in their clubs, perhaps throughrecruiting new members. The first come first parked carswill give the visitors more of a variety of cars to look at.The clubs themselves will be expected to supply parkingadvisors for their zones. So each club should pick twopeople who will be responsible to know which cars to putin those zones. They should be at the show by 8AM asmost cars start to come in shortly after that. The club feewill remain the same as last year per participating club andthis will guarantee you a club zone.

Fiat has declined to participate this year but said to contactthem next year as they feel that they will have newproduct to display (to me, that translates into ALFA). Intheir place though, MINI will participate. So, I guess wecome out even on that.

We still are encouraging new clubs to join us for theevent, so if you have contacts for clubs who have notparticipated in the past. Pass the word along to them.

To reserve a zone, please send your $100 donation (madeout to InterMarque) to Dave Lindemann. Please email meif you don’t have the address.

We are also working hard at getting a separate lot formodern classics i.e. cars less then 20 years old. Whichwould be the lot on 4th across from the Fire Station andbehind the bar. Information about this or any otherchanges will be posted on the Web Site and the FacebookSite.

If you wish to volunteer, please let me know as we willneed workers for set up, parking, registration and barrierset up and tear down.

So get your wax ready, finish up your projects and hopefor some warm weather! I’m just hoping for good weathersince I’m not even be close to done with my project.

If you need other information feel free to contact me [email protected]

In 2013 there will be many car marque anniversaries. One

celebration that should not go unnoticed is that of the Jaguar XK.

Debuted at the annual Earls Court Auto Show in October 1948,

the XK was destined to take the fledgling post-war Jaguar Cars

Ltd. into a wholly new dimension. Possibly saving the company

from financial difficulties and on to flourish in the 1950s.

THE HORSE BEFORE THE CART

“The power came from a piece of alloy as beautiful as the car it was of power, designed during midnight fire watching sessions in a grim wartime factory! Thefour fire-watchers, William Lyons, Bill Heynes, Claude Bailly and WalterHassen, drew up the XK engine in a tiny office in Coventry before creeping offto their camp beds. And when the Second World War was over, they set aboutbuilding a car fit to take their wonderful new engine. First it was to be amagnificent saloon like the pre-war designs being produced as a mater ofcontingency straight after the war. But that saloon car was too long in comingand William Lyons, the stylist with a touch of the showman, decided to build afew sports cars to emphasize how good the engine was. This sports car featuredmost of the good things the famous four had dreamed up: the lines of Lyons, theengine of Baily and Heynes, Haynes’s super new suspension, the dedicateddevelopment of Hassen and the chassis work of a fifth man, Bob Knight. It isonly fair to point out that there was also a sixth man, the freelance gas flowexpert, Harry Westlake. Westlake perfected the cylinder head and extractedmore and more power as time went into the 1950s.

The brave new machine was christened the XK120 at its unveiling. The 120stood for 120 MPH, and although it certainly looked as though it could reachthat magic speed, some people were skeptical.” 1

The XK engine was 3,442cc; 83 mm bore by 106 mm stroke in line 6 cylinder. It wasunique as it was the first production car to use the sophisticated twin overhead

camshaft in a cylinder head with hemispherical combustionchambers. In May of 1949, Soapy Sutton took his XK 120 toJabbeke motor speed way and hit 132.6 MPH thusdisquieting the skeptics forever. The XK body (120, 140 &150) production run totaled more than 30,357 before it gaveway to another sensation the XKE.

XK120 (1948-1954)

Introduced in 1948 at the Earl’s Court British MotorcarShow, the XK concept car was hurriedly prepared for theshow to showcase the 3,442cc 6-cylinder twin carburetorengine designed for a new MK VII saloon model yetunannounced. The engine was fitted to a shortened versionof a new chassis with independent front suspension, alsodestined for the new saloon. But the new chassis was clothedin an all aluminum stylish sports car body, not too dissimilarlooking to the pre-war BMW 328 Mille Miglia design.

The XK120, now named, was so well received that Jaguardecided to build the car to meet demand but, for the first twoyears, only 240 were produced, hand-crafted with thealuminum bodywork. Jaguar's highly successful twinoverhead camshaft six-cylinder engine was mated to a four-speed manual transmission, then producing 160bhp with aconventional live rear axle, leaf springs and drum brakes.Initially available as a two-seater roadster, internally theXK120 was well equipped and comfortable. The XK120achieved instant recognition and its reputation grew withentry into races and rallies along with specially orchestratedhigh-speed runs.

With incredible overseas and domestic sales success, the XKline was regularly updated to maintain its expanding marketposition, initially in 1950 as production was increased byutilizing a new steel body and then in 1951 a second variant, the XK120 fixed head coupe was introduced. The fixed headcoupe offered the sporting motorist even greater comfort andrefinement with rarely seen luxurious in a sports car like glasswind up side windows, external door locks, a mohair headlining and a polished walnut dashboard.

Nearing the end of production in 1953, the XK120 drop headcoupe was introduced offering greater luxury andconvenience to the roadster. With a well-designed hood thatcould be lowered and raised in seconds from the driver's seat, this model also featured the external door locks; wind upwindows and walnut trim as the fixed head.

XK140 (1954-1956)

In 1954 the XK120 was replaced by the XK140 offering manyimprovements over the earlier models and still available in allthree-body styles. The XK140 was the XK model that wasproduced for the shortest period of time. Although followingthe basic styling of the XK120, the XK140 was instantlyrecognizable by more substantial chromed bumpers front andrear, the heavy cast radiator grille and, on the fixed head, thelarger side window area. Internally both the FHC and DHCbenefited from occasional rear seating. Overdrive became anoption on the manual transmission cars and automatictransmission became available as well. Another improvementwas the fitment of a rack and pinion steering system to allXK140 models.

Celebrity has its perks when it comes to what you park! L-R: Steve McQueen takes a break on-set to give his 1957 XKSSsome attention. Clint Eastwood takes a look under the bonnet of his 1958 XK150 and Clark Gable is all smiles in his 1949

There was further model proliferation in that each of thethree body styles were offered in three versions: (1) thestandard car; (2) the M version with dual exhaust, wire wheelsand fog lamps; and (3) the MC, which received all the Mequipment as well as the cylinder head from the competitionC-Type. The top of the line MC (known in the UK as SE)was rated at 210bhp.

XK150 (1957-1961)

Initially only available as a fixed head coupe or drop headcoupe, these models were again instantly recognizable byexternal styling changes. A wider bonnet and radiator grille,a curved one-piece windscreen and substantially remodeledbody sides with a flattened swage line gave the XK150 a morecontemporary look though underneath the car used the samebasic chassis and suspension arrangement. The XK150 wasthe first production Jaguar to be fitted with disc brakes.

A year later (1958) the roadster version was announced witha longer rear deck area than the previous XK roadsters. Forthe first time this roadster featured wind up glass sidewindows. Internally, all the XK150s featured revised seatingand dashboard arrangements without any woodwork.

The standard engine was rated at 190bhp, but a 210bhp SEversion was also offered. More power soon followed with the‘S’ version of the 3.4-liter engine, which breathed throughtriple SU carburetors to generate 250bhp. As before, the fourspeed manual transmission was offered with overdrive and athree-speed Borg Warner automatic was optional.

Later in 1958, Jaguar added a lighter roadster version to theline-up. Available in both standard and ‘S’ versions, it had asleeker appearance but still offered roll-up windows. For1959, the big news was a 3.8-liter version of the famous XKengine. Rated at 220 in standard guise and 265bph for the Sversion, the big cat was even more seriously quick.

TWO PROJECT CARS FOR SALE: TRIUMPH SPITFIRE 6 AND A TR7SPIT 6: Includes Spit 6 frame, suspension, wheels, and drive train from a ʼ71 GT6. Everything is stock to myknowledge. No overdrive. Drive train and suspension are currently not mounted to the frame. The frame will neednew outriggers and new hard brake lines. The engine last ran in 2004, but ran well. The twin ZS carbs are notmounted to the engine. Tub is a rust free ʼ76 with a clean MN title. There is some surface rust in places, but itʼsvery minor. Frankly, itʼs the cleanest Spit tub Iʼve ever seen. There is a very shallow indentation in the right rearfender, from when I bumped it into my mostly yellow Spit while rolling it around. Should be a minor task to repair. The bonnet is from a ʼ72 GT6. It has some surface rust, and is slightly bent along the bottom of the fenders belowthe latches. It will need a little straightening prior to paint. Youʼd have a choice of GT6 or Spitfire doors – I haveboth. I also have the lower front valence pieces where the turn lamps mount. The trunk lid is from another car,and has a luggage rack. Itʼs not one Iʼve seen before. I have a windshield, fuel tank, steering column, ʼ71 GT6wiring harness, gauges, bumpers, soft top frame, exterior lights, steering rack, calipers, clutch slave, heater box, wiper system parts, grill, and seat frames. Iʼm not sure if I have the brake and clutch master cylinders. Things thatI know are missing are the transmission cover, wood dash, interior trim panels, seat covers and foam, carpet, parcel trays, and soft top. There are other things Iʼm forgetting, both included and missing, but this is what I canrecall at the moment. Iʼm asking $1000 for the whole thing.

The TR7 coupe was built in April ʼ75. The car is 95% complete, but the engine needs to be rebuilt. The enginehas been sitting outside for 30 years. I donʼt know if it can be salvaged. The body is very clean. The only rust isthe spare tire well, and a couple of spots on the boot lid. There is surface rust on the roof. The floors and rockersare solid. The interior is complete, but has suffered from sitting for 30 years. I got the car to save it from thecrusher. Given that these cars tended to rust quickly, it seemed a shame to “waste” a solid restoration candidate. It was simply too clean and complete to scrap. I took a bunch of pictures when I got the car, which I can email onrequest. $300 takes it. Both cars in stored just south of St. Peter MN. Contact Bill, 612-850-4072

We are including in the 2013 Minnesota Scottish Fair and Highland Games, as we have for many years, a display of up to 40 British cars & motorcycles manufactured in the UK, that one might see now or might have seen in days gone by, on the roads and motorways of Scotland. The Fair and Games are to be held at the Dakota County Fairgrounds in Farmington on Saturday, May 4th, 2013. We would love to have you display your car or motorcycle and be our guest for the day at the Fair & Games. Please visit our website to see all the wonderful things that will be going on. http://www.mnscottishfair.org/ http://www.mnscottishfair.org/britishcarshow.html The Display is as it indicates, a display, not a competition. There will be no judging. However, there will be voting for a “People’s Choice” award for Most Popular Car and Most Popular Motorcycle. You may stay by your vehicle and chat with folks or wander all over the Fairgrounds and take full advantage of all that the Fair and Games have to offer. It’s entirely up to you. We would like your vehicle to be in place by 8:30 AM and remain until 5:30 PM. We ask this because your car or motorcycle in the display is an integral part of the educational presentations of the Fair and not just part of a casual car and motorcycle show. The voting for “People’s Choice” awards will close at 4:00 PM. The awards will be given out during the closing ceremonies at 5:00 PM. You must be present to win. First Place will be a container of traditional Scottish Highland Nectar of the Gods. (AKA: “Haggis Helper”) You are cordially invited to leave your vehicle in place and attend the Ceilidh in McCracken’s Pub on the Fairgrounds from 5:30 to 8:00 PM. As a thank you for your participation, we will provide you with two free passes to the Fair and Games per car or motorcycle. Please contact me if you have any questions and so that I can send you a registration packet and the free passes. We hope that all British car and motorcycle owners displaying their vehicles will register in advance in order to help with our planning. However, if you decide at the last minute to display your vehicle, you are still welcome if we have space available. We look forward to seeing you and your British car or motorcycle on May 4th.
