Recognition by PResident geoRge W. bush

Her advocacy for single parents was recognized by President George W. Bush at the White House in 2002, when she received the President’s Community Volunteer Award from the Point of Light Foundation. In 2005, she received the Community Service Award from the State Department of Human Services and the Governor’s office. In 2012, the University of Arkansas College of Education and Health Professions recognized her as Outstanding Alumna in Education.

Marjorie Marugg-Wolfe

December 16, 1933 - March 3, 2013

Marjorie was a nationally recognized advocate for the educational aspirations of single parents. She died Sunday, March 3, 2013 at the age of 79. A passionate teacher, she worked tirelessly to encourage single parents to pursue higher education to improve their lives.

As Coordinator of the Displaced Homemakers/Women in Transition Program at Northwest Vo-Tech in the 1980’s, Marjorie found that unexpected expenses could deter single parents from pursuing the education they needed in order to escape poverty.

To meet the need, Marjorie started the Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Benton County in 1984. The program has spread to 75 Arkansas counties. In 2008, she became a founding board member of ASPIRE (Assisting Single Parents in Realizing Education), a nationwide support network for single parent scholarship programs across the country. The organizations Marjorie helped found have awarded over 33,000 scholarships to single mothers and fathers, totaling over $18.5 million.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

SPSF/BC Student Succeeds in NWA Fashion Week

Tiara Hudson, one of our students, was selected to participate in the NWA Fashion week in Fayetteville.

Tiara showcased her line “Rocker Chic.” She said her “collection was inspired by the movie Rock of Ages combined with a feminine flare of the roaring 20’s.” Tiara’s objective was to “create something that I would wear and many women could wear.” Her daughter, Gabrielle, also participated by walking the runway.

Tiara is working towards a Bachelor’s in Apparel Studies at the University of Arkansas. She has been a recipient of SPSF/BC since January of 2011.

Congratulations, Erin and Michael!

We are very proud of Tiara. She worked very hard, learned about the fashion industry and proved her creativity.
