the customer by the owner, manager or an employee. More than two thirds of the people who don’t return to your place of business don’t return because of the way they were treated. The reality is in the tourism industry, and in every business, customer service is paramount. Recently, the Wisconsin Department of Tourism developed a customer service training program to address this fact. The program creatively focuses around the state motto of FUN which has been identified as the number one reason why people travel. While fun is established as the base of the discussion, four major topics are covered all of which focus on the basics of customer service that apply through all industries. 1) Brining Fun to Life - Our state’s marketing is based on the idea that you can experience fun at every turn. But, that fun doesn’t always create itself. It’s often the role of customer service to bring that fun to life. 2) Fun, Delivered: The basics of Customer Service - Customer service may seem basic. But, according to the statistic mentioned above, not everyone knows how to do it properly. The program talks about some of the basics of properly serving your patrons, customers and visitors. 3) Fun Starts with You: Show Pride in Your Region - Customers, especially out-of-towners, will rely on you to tell them about your city, your community and your points of interest. But, unless you immerse yourself in your community, unless you care, it’s impossible to convey this information to your patrons. We’ll talk about some of the best ways to show pride in your community and how this will make your customers’ (and your employees’) experience more fun. 4) Calm Down, Have Fun: Defusing Angry Customers - Unfortunately, not everyone who walks in our door shares the same friendliness that many Wisconsinites possess. Occasionally, you will run into an angry customer. Maybe it’s warranted. Maybe it’s not. But it’s your job as a customer service specialist to calm a customer down so that they can experience the fun our state has to offer. The Chamber invites you to schedule this customer service training for your staff at a time and location of your convenience. To schedule, contact [email protected] or call the Chamber office. Prior to the training, you will have the opportunity to review the program and have revisions made to meet your business or organization’s needs. It is preferred that presentations have a minimum of ten individuals in attendance which can include multiple businesses or organizations. For those that prefer to attend a pre-scheduled event, the presentation will be provided at the Chamber office at the following dates and times. Please RSVP to [email protected] if you plan to attend or send employees. Tuesday, May 7, 2013 from noon until 1:00pm; Wednesday, May 15, 2013 from 7:30 until 8:30am; and Thursday, May 23, 2013 from 6:00 until 7:00pm.

Over 110 Waupaca High School Juniors attended the 2013 Waupaca Area Chamber of Commerce Mini Business World held, April 25th at Spencer Lake Christian Center. Steve Benzchawel, Director of Business World, WMC Foundation, started the day out with dividing the students up into groups of four to eight; this would now become a business. Each business then had to elect a CEO, a Marketing Director, and a CFO. The CEO’s, along with help from their company, were tested on state facts such as: What was the Wisconsin unemployment rate in March? Which sector of business is the largest in the state? How many dollars are generated in the state through the Tourism Industry? The CEO’s were awarded boxes of candy to share with their team members. If you read the whole article you will find the answers.

Next the CEO’s were given a business packet which told what type of business they were, a manufacturer, service or retailer. Included in the packet was financial information, what the cost was to produce their product, what the consumer price was, projected sales numbers and more. The students had to determine their product, come up with a logo and tag line, a mission statement and a vision statement. They had to determine their financial state and all the details in running a business.

Late in the morning, Jim Morgan, VP of the WMC Foundation, came and presented information on Generational Differences. He explained how this

is the first time ever that we have four different generations in our workforce working together side by side, Veterans, Boomers, Xers and Millennials. And how each of these groups has been impacted by various events that have shaped who they are and how they work. So in order to work with them you need to understand what motivates them and how to work together.

He went on to talk about what has influenced their lives (the students): such as they have never seen an airplane ‘ticket’; they have never ‘dialed’ a telephone; they think the Lambeau Leap has always existed, they think of ‘Star Wars’ as a film, not a defense strategy; they have always known about blue M&M’s, but never seen tan ones; they think that ‘History’ has always had its own channel; they have always worn a helmet and fastened a seat belt; they can’t image only four channels on TV and have always used a phone for typing more than talking.

Mr. Morgan then talked about the areas of generational conflict in the workplace: work ethic and culture, organizational structure, dealing with change, managing technology and communications, feedback and how it is given, salary and rewards, and motivation and careers. And how each of these means something different to each generation and how you have to meld them into one workforce. He stressed that you need to accommodate differences, provide choices, be flexible, respect others’ opinions and keep good people in your business.

The last piece of advice he gave to the students was “True Character is how you behave, because when you think no one is watching…someone always is.” Watch what you do on Facebook, Twitter, in person and where ever you go because these are the things that employers look at and remember about you. All of which will have an impact on your future.

Following a working lunch each business CEO gave their presentation to the group, which included the balance of the students and the advisors. The CEO’s talked about the product they developed and how it would be used, their tag line, showed their logo (drawn by their marketing director) and told how they did financially. The group voted on the best presentations and products, with the top two businesses receiving awards. The ideas were very creative with some so good that you could see a manufacturer or business taking the idea and selling it, such as ‘The Mega Mitt’, it is a mitt that the ball will always come back to or ‘Explore Imagination’ where children have

the opportunity to create their own adventure.

The close to the day was playing The Price is Right, with students guessing the price of Wisconsin made products.

The day was filled with hard work, fun and lots of learning about what a business is, how it works, how to work with others and that working in a manufacturing business is for all, including well educated people. Opportunities are there for four year degrees and technical education, plus they are rewarding careers with great pay and benefits.

The day was supported by many local businesses that see the value in educating our up and coming leaders of our community. Silver Sponsors included First National Bank and Office Outfitters; Bronze Sponsors included Farmers State Bank, First State Bank, Fox Valley Technical College – Waupaca Regional Center, Gusmer Enterprises, Neuville Motors, Riverside Medical Center, Waupaca County Economic Development Corporation, and Wisconsin Public Service. And the in-kind snack and lunch sponsors Fox Valley Technical College – Waupaca Regional Center, Krumbs, Kwik Trip Store #625, Liquidators Plus, LLC, Pepsi Beverages Company, R.H. Liquidation, LLC, Wheel House and Weasel’s. And the generous donation made to the WMC Foundation from the Waupaca Foundry. And a special thanks to the Class Advisors: Jerry Tiffany, Jim Schulz, Deb Domask, Paul Shrode, Rick Bakovka, Alexandra Bourke, Jeff Gabriel and Dan Beighley.

Students were made aware of the free scholarships to attend a summer Business World program at St. Norbert’s College, DePere or Edgewood College, Madison. This is a four day program that brings high school students and business volunteers together on a college campus to learn about the challenges facing our economy. It is an opportunity that will enable you to prepare for your future in today’s increasingly competitive global marketplace. You can learn more about Business World at their website http://www.wmc.org/programs/business-world/.

And now the answers to the questions: What was the Wisconsin unemployment rate in March? In March 2013 the unemployment rate was 7.1%. This was .5% lower than the national rate. Which sector of business is the largest in the state? Most think that it is manufacturing and this has been true in the past but for the time period of the most recent survey it is actually Trade, Transportation & Utilities How many dollars are generated in the state through the Tourism Industry? In 2011 49 billion dollars were generated through the Tourism Industry.

Engage & Inspire Your Workforce

As organizations continue to compete for top talent, they also seek to retain this talent, especially when in an increasingly competitive environment. This interactive session will showcase how leaders can benefit by ensuring that they and their employees are engaged and inspired to do their best work. An engaged workforce is critical, because having employees who quit and stay, is far worse a problem than employees who quit and leave.

If you want to build a high engagement and inspired workforce, focus on: trust & integrity, job fit, performance expectations & feedback, alignment with corporate goals, culture, the relationship with the supervisor, employee development, inspiration & motivation, and growth opportunities.

This session is sponsored in part by the Waupaca County
