Women to Celebrate Historic
B’not Mitzvah and Trip to Israel
Special Shabbat Service
May 3, 2014
On May 3, 1979, twelve women were called to the Torah for a B’not Mitzvah ceremony. Since the practice of Bat Mitzvah in a Conservative Synagogue was relatively new, these women were achieving something not available to them as children. Rabbi Pearlmutter, z’l, taught the women and wrote, “These women represent a new spirit that enhances Jewish life.”
Thirty-five years later, six members of the original class, Har-riet Black, Sharon Marks, Rhoda Miller, Marlene Remer, Meri-lyn Sanders, and Doris Steinberg will come together to partici-pate in the Shabbat service. Sonia Maltinsky and Lois Miller, two members of the class were unable to attend, but send warm greetings.
This past November Ellen Federman, Kathryn Linver, Rhoda
Miller, Suzie Rosenberg and Cathy Sperling, toured Israel with
a group sponsored by United Synagogue. In celebration of
Yom Ha’atzmaut and 66 years of Israeli history these women
will share their amazing trip as part of the service.

NOTES FROM THE CANTOR Connecting Pesach to Shavuot
I am writing this article during the period in our Jewish calendar known as sefirat
ha’omer/the counting of the omer, 49 days of counting that connect Pesach to
Shavuot. During Temple times our ancestors brought a sheaf (omer) offering of
new barley crops from the second day of Pesach, for each of the 49 days till Shavuot,
which occurred on the 50th day.
This connection – 7 X 7 and the succeeding number 50 - are deeply symbolic,
ordained by the Torah as representing amongst other things freedom, completion
and celebration. The Torah states, “You shall sanctify the fiftieth year and proclaim
liberty throughout the land for all its inhabitants; it shall be a jubilee for you…” (Leviticus 25: 10). The
words in bold are inscribed on the US Liberty Bell.
Ironically, despite the inherent connection between the 2 holidays of Pesach and Shavuot, Pesach remains
one of the most observed and popular Jewish holidays, whereas Shavuot is one of the most neglected, de-
spite its connection with the revelation of Torah. Yet the whole purpose of liberation, so keenly marked by
Jews throughout the world on Pesach, was to receive the Torah, so as to establish a goy kadosh/holy people,
celebrated on Shavuot, but marked by so few.
There are many reasons for this dichotomy, not least of which I would suggest are the wonderful rituals of
Pesach with its numerous tangible symbols of the seder and hagadah, whereas Shavuot only has an intangi-
ble symbol – that of the Torah. (I don’t count eating dairy on Shavuot as a real symbol). Our perpetual
challenge then is - to concretize Torah, not only on Shavuot, but every day - in our everyday lives, to try to
make ourselves better, and thereby improve our society!
Egypt, despite the misery of slavery, represented for many of our ancestors, certainty, whereas the desert,
despite the ecstasy of our people’s state of freedom, represented the unknown. In fact the Torah records
that soon after leaving Egypt, as they faced their first hurdles of freedom - a lack of water and familiar food
like was provided for them in Egypt - some wanted to turn back, feeling a weird “nostalgia” for Egypt: “…
if only we had died…in Egypt where we sat by our fleshpots and ate abundant bread…” (Exodus 16:3) or,
“…we remember the fish we ate for free in Egypt…” (Numbers 11:5). To some, the familiarity and certain-
ty of Egypt, despite its horrors, was preferable to the unknown challenges of the desert. Or, as the cliché
goes, ‘how quickly they forget!’
One way to keep alive the spirit of Pesach and ‘not forget’ before that spirit fades, instead of waiting anoth-
er 6 months till Rosh Hashanna, is to join us for the wonderful Shavuot celebration we are planning on
Tuesday evening June 3, 2014 at 6:30p.m. Please join us for a delicious dairy Shavuot dinner followed by
davening, a stimulating class taught by Rabbi Jason Miller who will join us with his family, a game of
“Jewpardy” with prizes for winners and a dramatic reading of the Book of Ruth.

Come to Shul… Be Happy! We use the term "Happy" quite a bit. We wish people a Happy Birthday and Happy Anniversary, we say Hap-
py Holidays, and we offer blessings of happiness for a newly married couple. What do we mean when we say
we want people to be happy? I've been thinking about happiness a lot lately because of the very popular song
"Happy" by Pharrell Williams - it's tough to hear that song and not smile. This catchy tune is played all the
time on the radio and there are hundreds of groups that have recorded themselves dancing to this upbeat song.
No doubt "Happy" will go down as the most popular song of 2014 and that's a good thing since we can all use
a little reminder to be happy in our lives.
Each time I hear that song (and I hear it a lot thanks to my kids!), I think of one of my favorite books called
"Stumbling on Happiness" by Harvard psychology professor Daniel Gilbert. The author uses cutting-edge re-
search to show that happiness is not really what or where we thought it was. We often think we know what
will make us happy, but we really do not. We also say we are happy but oftentimes, as Gilbert explains, we
are just misusing the term “happy.” Reading this book has made me to think of new ways to not only bring
more happiness into my own life and the life of my family members, but also into your lives when you come to
synagogue.
During our services, we recite the following words from one of the psalms: Ashrei Yoshvei Veiteicha, meaning
“Happy are those who dwell in Your (God’s) house.” I certainly hope that those who enter our congregation
will find true happiness. As your visiting rabbi, I, together with Hazzan Lichterman, share a lot of hopes,
dreams, and aspirations for our congregation. Most of all, however, I want you to enter the building and be
happy (especially on Shabbat). No matter how young or old you are, there will be opportunities for you to find
happiness at B'nai Israel and I look forward to being a part of those experiences.
I am often asked why I chose to become a rabbi. There are several reasons for my decision to pursue this ca-
reer and life, however, at the top of the list is the fact that being Jewish and serving as a rabbi (teacher) makes
me a happy person. Each time I share Shabbat with the congregation, it is a happy and rewarding experience
for me. Our congregation is a place where you and your family will be happy. Please do not hesitate to con-
tact me and let me know how you find happiness in Judaism and how, together, we can make the kehillah
kedosha (holy congregation) an even happier place for all of us.
Bivracha (with blessing),

B'nai Israel Garden 2014
We look forward to Season Four of planting the garden at B'nai Israel. Every year there has been a steady increase of fresh pro-duce that CBI has been able to give to the Jewish Family Service Foodbank (JFS Foodbank). This effort has been achieved by a wonderful group of volunteers who tend the garden. Last year we were moderately successful with our "Adopt a Plant" program where several congregants raised vegetables at their homes and then donated them to the JFS Foodbank. To achieve greater success more on-site volunteers and more home planters are needed. Those interested in joining us at the garden or growing vegetables at home, please contact [email protected] or MARTY KABACK 419-826-2011 and we will be happy to introduce you to the Mitzvah of gardening and giving to those in need. YOUTH AND EDUCATION NEWS
I am very happy to write this article to give you great news about BITUSY. On April 4 - April 6, 2014 our USY young
adults went to the Regional Convention where they won four awards for their outstanding services, including best Kadi-
ma, best website, best joint USY/Kadima event and best fundraising event. Our USY young adults tied for winning the
most awards and was the only USY chapter to beat the SA/TO (Social Action/Tikun Olam) goal. Congratulations for a
great job.
On April 9, 2014 USY had a hot dog cookout and everyone had a good time. Special thanks to Caren and Larry for set-
ting up the grill and purchasing the charcoal and lighter fluid for the grill. USY is having several social events including
a Kadima Cake Boss night on April 30, 2014, a pizza dinner and cookie cake night for both Kadima and USY on May
14, 2014, and a pool party at the Glasser residence scheduled in early June, 2014. We will provide an exact date for the
pool party within the next few weeks and adults are welcome to attend. May 21, 2014 is the USY Board Elections for the
eighth grade and USY and on May 31, 2014 is the Board Havdalah Induction Ceremony with a time to be announced.
BITUSY is sponsoring a donation drive of clothes in good and clean condition and is also asking the Jewish community
to donate items that cannot be purchased with food stamps, such as diapers, laundry soap, hand soap, body soap, dental
care, deodorant, and toilet paper. Jewish Family Services and other local non- profit organizations will benefit from these
donations. This donation drive will begin on April 20, 2014 and will last until June 1, 2014. These items can be dropped
off at the B’nai Israel front office.
Finally, I would like to thank Brynna Post and Rachel Noleff for doing a great job working with our BITUSY. Their ef-
forts are greatly appreciated in helping our BITUSY to be as successful as it is.
Thank you for all of your support for BITUSY.
