WINONA HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY NEWSLETTER May 2014 Presidents' Message Hello everyone! Technically summer does not begin until June 21st, but I read that most Canadians consider the Victoria Day long weekend to be the beginning of summer. So while it is still too cool to do much planting in our first unofficial weekend of summer, there are signs that summer is not far away: plants are finally making an appearance and the grass is getting greener. This will be our last meeting until September 17th, when Marie Minaker will speak about her book: Barbara Laking: A Force of Nature in Her Own Right. Barbara was the wife of Leslie Laking, Director of the RBG from the 1950s to the 1980s. Barbara worked beside her husband during his tenure as Director of the RBG and played a big role in its development during these three decades. 2014 is the 85th Anniversary for the Winona Horticultural Society. We invite members, past and present, as well as the general public, to a celebration on Saturday July 12th, 1 - 4 pm at Winona Park. The celebration will include a presentation by Lizzie Matheson, floral designer and entertainer, as well as musical entertainment, create a paper quilt, refreshments and much more! If you would like to help with the organization of this event, please let us know, otherwise, we look forward to seeing you on July 12th. On Sunday, Greta, Jane, Debbie, Helene and I took advantage of the invitation issued by our April speaker, Elizabeth Hilton, to visit Squirrel House for their open house. The gardens are spectacular and even this early in the season, it is apparent that they are a labour of love for Elizabeth and Ron. We would like to remind you that we have selected Squirrel House as one of the destinations for our June tour. We hope to have a picnic lunch and to add another destination to the outing. We will confirm details closer to the tour. The date for the tour will be June 21 or 28. I am looking forward to seeing the changes that will take place in the Squirrel House gardens in the next month before the tour. Please let us know which dates works best for you at the May meeting. We will carpool to/from Winona. This will be a busy summer with our garage sale on June 7th (we are looking for donations and volunteers) and of course, the Peach Festival on August 22, 23 and 24. Please let us know if you would like to contribute plants for the WinHort booth, or if you have time to volunteer over the weekend. We hope to see you over the summer months at our various events, but if not, we hope that you have a wonderful summer. Tonight's SpeakersOur speakers for this evening are Ann and Bob Granatier of Trails End Iris Gardens. Ann andBob are yet another example of how one person'slove for the garden can become the pursuit and occupation of the whole family. In this case it was Ann who got things started.

Ann's background includes many years working invarious horticultural disciplines, such as garden designer, teacher and consultant. Finally, after retiring several years ago, she is back where she loves to be – in her own garden.

Husband Bob, started out trying to please Ann in her demands to create yet another garden, adding more compost here, moving some plants there . . . the garden “honey do list”. But then, as Ann says, “he caught the bug and now steers the ship!” An avid photographer, most of the photographs on their website are Bob's, and his work and patience has paid off in the wonderful gardens they depict. A real family affair, Bob, Ann, their children and grandchildren all continue to improve and add to the picture-filled website.

Ann and Bob are both Board Members and Bob serves as Treasurer for the Canadian Iris Society (CIS), a group that promotes the cultivation and development of Irises. They are also members of the American Iris Society (AIS) and past-Presidents of the Brantford Garden Club. As well, Ann and Bob are both accredited judges of the American Iris Society.

In their work at Trails End Gardens, a ten-acre property between Hamilton and Brantford, Ann and Bob have decided to focus on Award Winner Irises and New Introductions. Since there are thousands of varieties of Iris, this best ensures the quality of plants offered to their customers.

All of the plants at Trails End are grown with tender loving care. They come in a rainbow of beautiful colours, and are guaranteed true-to-name varieties. Bob does the planting and digging out himself, to make sure there are no mix-ups.

As we will see first hand from tonight's presentation, Ann and Bob are very proud of theirestablishment. They enjoy chatting with people about favourite Irises, and welcome the public to browse the website, or better yet, pay a visit to their open gardens during the months of May andJune.

Sounds like a plan. Glad to have you here tonight, Ann and Bob Granatier!

Reaching out to seniors at Orchard Terrace Care CentreOn April 25th, Greta, Jane and Hélène, made theirway to Orchard Terrace Care Centre, at Hwy. 8 and Glover Rd, to do some spring flower planting as an outreach program for the seniors living there. The outing was a great success and did much to brighten the day of all concerned. Here's what Greta says about their visit:“We were greeted with oo's and ah's from the residents when we walked in the door carrying the beautiful spring flowers. I made a spring planter and each resident received a plant with a colourful pot. With assistance, some of them were able to do their own planting, and they werethrilled to bits!” Greta was aided in her efforts by Jane and Hélène, as well as two student volunteers. She says, “I certainly couldn't have managed without their help. I would like to do this again, but we do need volunteers and ideas for activities.”So if you would like to spend an hour or so sharing your love of plants, or/and if you have ideas for future outings, please give Greta a call. She'll be grateful for the help, and you'll be glad you did!

In MemoriamWe were sad to hear that former member, Ellen Cusick, passed away on May 7. Until her recent struggle with ill health, Ellen and her husband Mike were both faithful members of WHS, and contributed many volunteer hours at meetings, Peach Festival, and District 6 events. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mike and his family.

Grand Peach BallAs one of the member organizations of Winona Peach Festival, we are not only invited to the annual “ball”, but expected to be represented there. This is a gala (semi-formal) event for the purpose of celebrating the proud contributions Peach Festival makes to the community, as well as an opportunity to meet the Queen and princesses, who will represent all of us throughout the year. The evening starts with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres at 6 pm; features a sumptuous meal at7:15; followed by dancing from 9 pm to 1 am; and a dessert buffet at 10:30 pm. Music is supplied by Party Source Entertainment.Tickets are $50 each and full tables are available if you are bringing a crowd. Though the price tagmay seem a little high, when you think about all you get, and how much fun you'll have, it is

worth it to show our support for the organization that enables us our major yearly fund raiser: ourbooth at the Winona Peach Festival. To view the menu and find out how to order tickets, contact Joy or Jane.
