I saw an article recently about a few of the “simple truths we learn on the road of life” and thought the following ones were especially worth sharing with all of you.

1. Real friends won’t ask you to change who you are.

The right people for you will love all the things about you that the wrong people are intimidated by. Don’t change so people will like you. Be patient, keep being yourself, and pretty soon the right people will love the real you.

2. Adversity will come to every person at some point.

How you meet it, what you make of it, and what you allow it to take from you and give to you is determined by your mental habits and personal choices.

3. Someone else doesn’t have to be wrong for you to right.

Keep an open mind. The highest form of ignorance is when you reject something you don’t know. We all have our own unique path and feelings. When you judge another, you do not define them, you define yourself. It’s one thing to feel that you are on the right path, but it’s another to think that yours is the only path.

4. Pay close attention to how people feel.

There’s always some truth behind ‘just kidding,’ knowledge behind ‘I don’t know,’ emotion behind ‘I don’t care,’ and pain behind ‘It’s okay.’ And remember, silence is often the loudest cry. Sometimes what a person needs most is a hand to hold and a heart to understand.

5. The past can’t hurt you…unless you let it.

Forgive and move on! Forgiveness allows you to focus on the future without combating the past.

Ashland Walks with Pat Acklin

Well, walk on the wildflower side with Mel Bailey and Kathy Mooney on 5/3. Looks like the weather cooperated and all had a good walk!

On Saturday, April 12 this group went on a walking field trip to explore the ways in which the City Beautiful and Parks & Playgrounds movements influenced Ashland. We met at the Community Center, built in honor of the Ashland Women’s Civic Improvement Club, on Winburn Way in Lithia Park and walked to the library. We adjourned to the patio of the Standing Stone for refreshments following the walk.

We will schedule another walk in the early fall for those who couldn’t join us this spring.—Pat

From Lori Ainsworth of the Park’s Dept to organizer, Don Paul:

What a wonderful group that came out on Saturday! Everyone was so nice and did a great job chipping our Lithia Trails. I love the publicity you arranged getting both Ch. 12 and Ch. 5 to show up!

We have two posts on our Facebook account at this time-one from Graham and the other from Channel 12 news.

Thank you so much for setting up this community event and I look forward to working with you next year!

On Sunday, May 4th a small group of four soroptimists, three soroptimisters and one soroptidaughter braved the overcast skies and headed up the mountains towards Hyatt Lake. After a quick tutorial on morel identification and hunting tips given by Laurie, the group began searching the grass and duff covered ground under the towering Douglas Fir. The group be-gan to find mushrooms almost immediately. As the morning progressed and we searched through the deserted camping ground, we improved our “eye” for spotting the morels. By the end of the hunt everyone had at least a dozen morels in their basket and a lot of fun. —Laurie Schaaf

Look who was featured in SOU President Mary Cullinan’s Monday message to staff. Jenni made a lovely presentation to the Blue Moon last month, featuring her goals for her team and a short video of what playing soccer at SOU means to each team member. It was inspiring.

Note: See some of the soccer teammates in the pictures of the Blue Moon, next page. Jenni will soon be inducted as a new member. She is the daughter of member Gail Rosenberg.
