GRAND KNIGHT’S CORNER

“Put out into the deep.” “Totus Tuus – Totally Yours.” “Be not afraid.” These words at the opening of the State Convention business meet-

ing set the tone of the weekend. We heard stirring words from Father Brad Noonan, Father John Stearns, and Deacon Jim Bachta. Father

Brad opened and closed every session with prayer and a blessing. He said that our Church needs the Knights of Columbus now more than

ever. Then he described the kind of Knights that are needed - Men who know, witness, and defend the faith; Men who inspire the young

with example of integrity and faith; Men unafraid to follow the Lord; Men who know and love the Eucharist; Men of prayer; Catholic gentle-

men. In other words, we are called to be the total package – men of prayer and faith AND men of action.

At the Saturday Mass, Father Stearns applied the parable of the Good Shepherd to our order. We are all called to be shepherds as well as

members of the flock. He said that one thing that good shepherds do is to protect the sheep from the wolves. In our culture, there are

many wolves – abortion, euthanasia, attacks on family and marriage, attacks on religious freedom, pornography, human trafficking, and

child abuse to name a few. Again, this requires action and courage to oppose popular culture. He emphasized that we are NOT Brothers

of Columbus, the Association of Columbus, or Society of Columbus. We ARE KNIGHTS of Columbus, and Knights are men of action, men

who fight for the right and defend the weak and helpless.

Deacon Jim emphasized how we defend those most vulnerable – the preborn, elderly and women facing unplanned pregnancy. Again,

our first line of defense is Prayer. It takes prayer to defeat evil. It also takes Presence – being a witness to the truth that all life is sacred,

whether by prayer vigils, marches for life, or supporting other pro-life activities. He added a third P – Politics. Catholics of all political fla-

vors need to apply their faith to the political process, seeking just laws and just government that protects all of its citizens. He mentioned

several recent initiatives in the Colorado legislature that were intended to protect mothers and babies, but which were defeated. It is hard

to beat the powerful pro-death industry and lobby. He said the first step there is to stop the flow of money by convincing people not to

have abortions. How? Once again - by prayer and peaceful, loving

witness. Our Ultrasound Initiative helps there.

In the same vein, we were reminded to use our Knights to Christ

devotional – a great start to each day. This booklet is a Colorado

original created at the initiative of Past State Deputy Jerry O’Connor

based on the work of Fr. Mark Link, S.J. Each daily devotion speaks to

one of our core values – Charity, Unity, Fraternity, or Patriotism. If

we utilize this great resource given to each of our members, it can

boost our spirituality, again helping us to be men of faith and

prayer. So put that Knight to Christ where you will see and use it

daily. If you don’t have one, by all means see me to get one.

As Knights, we are given every opportunity and encouragement to

develop and practice our faith. Are you aware of it? Are you en-

gaged? If you are that kind of man we’ve described, do you show it?

We evangelize and grow the Order by being strong Catholic men of

faith, and by our example and our programs for church, community,

families, and youth.

An Update on King Soopers Gift Cards Herman Jasper

The report for the four weeks ended April 18 shows total customer usage of

$10,242.14. This should result in income of $512.10. When the trustees met to review

the projections for the balance of the year, we forecast two more months at $550.00--

we are a little short. But as King Soopers reports every four weeks and not every calendar

month we may end up with one more check than we had anticipated.

Selection of Council Officers for 2015-2016 is Approaching

Our by-laws stipulate that officers be selected in May prior to the beginning of the new fraternal year

which occurs on July 1.

Here is the process that will be followed:

1. The Grand Knight, Sir Ron Krom, designated the trustees as a nominating committee. The nominat-

ing committee’s proposed slate is now being published in the Council Newsletter.

2. The slate will be read at the May 13 and May 27 Council meetings.

3. Voting will take place after the reading of the proposed slate on May 27.

Prior to voting the floor will be open to nominations by the membership. To be eligible to serve as an

elected officer, the Brother Knight must be a 3rd Degree Knight . The Financial Secretary and the Lec-

turer are positions appointed by the Grand Knight.

April 2015 Knight of the Month

Taylor Lilly

A Fourth Degree Knight, Sir Taylor Lilly joined the order in October, 2001, at Sun City Ca. He continued his membership through five different councils as he moved about the country and

is now a member of Council 9993 and Assembly 3049.

He was elected Treasurer for Council 9993 2011-2012 and has served continually though this

current year (4 years) He works closely with the Financial Secretary to insure that all funds are

carefully and accurately managed. Sir Taylor has been innovative in working with the Financial

Secretary and Grand Knight(s) in bringing a higher level of accountability and transparency to

our financial record keeping. He also serves as Faithful Purser for Assembly 3049.

For several years he has led the Council in two of our “signature” service programs. Sir

Taylor led the Council’s effort in assisting worshipers at Christmas and Easter Masses in locat-

ing parking in and near the Parish parking lot. In assuming leadership of the Football Frenzy

fundraiser he substantially grew the success of this program. He participates in numerous other

Council activities including Tootsie Rolls, the parish picnic. the Council Free Throw Champion-

ship, the Council parking fundraiser at the USAFA, and our Council Family Picnic.

At St. Patrick, he serves parishioners as Sacristan at the 5:00 PM Sunday Mass. He is just

beginning his service on the Parish Pastoral Council.

In the community Taylor shares his gifts in various ways. He is a head judge for the Southern

Colorado FIRST Lego League, an annual competition of science-minded elementary and middle

school students. The activities and projects involve robot building, leadership, problem solving, and teamwork. He is a member of the Advi-

sory Board of the National Museum of WWII Aviation at the Colorado Springs Airport. He judges projects created by students up to high

school age at the annual Pikes Peak Regional Science Fair. As Southern Vice-Chair for the Rocky Mountain Section of the American Institute

of Aeronautics and Astronautics he is active in the professional development of his colleagues.

We are blessed to have you as a member of Council 9993 and Assembly 3039, and applaud you for your service and friendship.

The Culture of Life As I mentioned in the Grand Knight article, we heard a fair amount at the State Convention about the culture of life – one of our key

program areas. A big part of that is the Ultrasound Initiative. If this is a term new to you, read more at the Supreme Council web page:

http://www.kofc.org/un/en/prolife/ultrasound/ . Since 2009, Supreme Council has provided matching funds to buy ultrasound machines

for pregnancy centers. Colorado Knights participate in this program. To date 12 machines have been placed in Colorado pregnancy cen-

ters, and one more will be placed soon. More are planned. As of March 2015, the ultrasound program has purchased over 540 ultra-

sound machines at a cost of over $16.1 million.

Without such support, most pregnancy centers would be unable to afford buying an ultrasound machine which usually costs tens of

thousands of dollars. With such a machine in place, pregnancy centers can show sonograms, or images of the baby in the uterus. This is

often a decisive factor in helping parents choose to keep their baby rather than aborting it. Our council supports the Ultrasound Initiative

and also Life Network, the local agency that operates two pregnancy centers in Colorado Springs. One center is at 3700 Galley Road and

the other is at 3925 N. Centennial Blvd, not far from Planned Parenthood. So if you are participating in our fundraising initiatives, you are

also a partner in supporting these important programs. The Colorado State Ladies Auxiliary also supports these programs, and presented

a large check to the Ultrasound Initiative at the 2015 State Convention.

On a different note, I hope you have been following the news on Colorado legislation to protect our unborn babies who are wanted by

their parents. As mentioned in a previous article, the Brady bill was defeated, probably to protect abortion rights. Then came the attack

on Michelle Wilkins in Longmont. This has stirred some lawmakers to try again to pass a bill protecting unborn children from murder and

other violence. 38 other states have passed such legislation, and now Senate Bill 268 has passed and faces a battle in the House. By the

time you read this, you will know if Colorado is the 39th state to protect babies from criminals or is too firmly entrenched in the culture of

death. I hope everyone stays aware of what our lawmakers are doing and lets them know how we Catholics stand on issues of life and

death.

A good way to keep track of legislation is through the Colorado Catholic Conference. Their web site is at (http://

www.cocatholicconference.org/) . There you can look up pending legislation and sign up for email alerts on important things coming up.

They also have a Facebook page. For example, I was just notified of House Bill 15 1194 which will appropriate $5 million

to continue providing contraception such as IUD’s to low-income women and girls. The House has passed

it and sent it to the Senate. There is also House Bill 15-1036 to Warn Pregnant Women of Medical Mari-

juana Dangers. (What about recreational marijuana?) That bill was postponed indefinitely by House

Committee on Public Health Care & Human Services. So stay informed and keep our elected representa-

tives accountable! As Ronald Reagan said, “I notice that most people who are for abortion have been born.” Vivat Jesus!

The Bottom Line

"$upporting Our Good Works "

What follows is a brief summary of the financial activities associated with our 3rd Degree Council [9993] and 4th Degree Assembly

[3049].

April was a tremendous month for Council 9993. Your generous participation in the King Soopers Neighborhood Card Program has

raised an additional $5,387 which was previously unexpected in the budget. After careful consideration of the financial state of the

Council, the board of Trustees, with the approval of the Grand Knight, Deputy Grand Knight, & general membership, recommended a

series of “smaller” donations in the month of April and a few “substantial” donations in May. The distinction comes from a $500 limit

which restricts payments which can be made without a posted resolution. You will see several examples of these resolutions in this

month’s edition of the newsletter.

In April, Council 9993 donated an additional $25 to the Respect Life Crafters and an additional $150 to the Prayer Blanket initiative,

both run by Carol Colter. The KofC State Charities Fund received $200 for the Pennies from Heaven initiative, $400 for the Ultrasound

initiative, and $500 for the training of clergy within the Military Archdiocese. Pikes Peak Citizens for Life received $200 for its educa-

tional initiatives. Life Network received $200 for its educational initiatives in addition to the $100 monthly donation Council 9993 pro-

vides for their pregnancy center. St. Patrick Youth received $400 for their upcoming mission trip. Troop 268 received $200 for their

activities in the upcoming year. The Renewed Vision Clinic received $200.

On the front of regular business, the Council paid its annual bill of $425 for ad space in the parish bulletin. Additional funds were do-

nated to Fr. Larry in appreciation for all he does for the parish and to Fr. Brian on his ordination anniversary. The April breakfast grossed

$587 with expenses of approximately $300. Lastly, we received our King Soopers check for the month of March, $647.

Resolution to Support St. Mary’s High School

Whereas St. Mary’s High School is a Catholic high school in our community, and is attended by some students from St. Patrick Parish, and

Whereas St. Mary’s High School is the only Catholic high school in southern Colorado, founded in 1885, and is worth preserving, and

Whereas St. Mary’s High School students are very successful academically, earning many scholarships and admission to top universities,

with 100% of the Class of 2014 being accepted to colleges and universities, and

Whereas St. Mary’s High School places emphasis on developing the faith of its students, and is committed to a spirituality encompassing

a love for God and neighbor, respect, integrity, and community service, and

Whereas students with a Catholic high school education are much more likely to become faithful life-long Catholics and lay leaders, and

Whereas many St. Mary’s High School students need financial tuition assistance, and

Whereas an appeal for assistance was made by Tom Resman, a brother Knight of Council 9993, and

Be it resolved that Council 9993 will make a one-time donation of $1500 to the St. Mary High School Scholarship Fund, with further dona-

tions to be considered at an annual review.

Knights of Columbus Council #9993 Resolution Resolution To Conduct the Council 9993 2015 Annual Family Picnic on 12 June 2015 22 April 2015

Whereas: Council 9993 traditionally holds a Council Picnic every summer as one of our monthly social events oriented towards a family

atmosphere encouraging fun for young and old alike.

And Whereas: For the 2014 Council 9993 Picnic, the council rented a bouncy house and obstacle course/slide to continue the emphasis

of making this a family affair. There were over 120 people of all ages in attendance. Food provided included brats, burgers, dogs, grilled

chicken and tons of delicious “go withs” and desserts.

And Whereas: The cost of the 2014 Council 9993 Picnic was approximately $650.

And Whereas: Council 9993 intends to hold the Council 9993 annual picnic on 12 June 2015 at St Patrick Parish building on the themes

established by the 2014 picnic.

Therefore be it resolved that:

Council #9993 allocate up to $650 to be expended to conduct the Council 9993 2015 Annual Family Picnic on 12 June 2015.

Ladies Auxiliary Korner By Fran Krom

The Ladies Auxiliary is happy to report a successful Bake Sale in April. We offered a variety of foods and had an opportunity to meet and

talk with many parishioners. The proceeds of the sale will be given to El Centro de los Pobres of Avondale, Colorado and Sweet Dreams of

Colorado. The Ladies voted to augment the earnings and contribute $300 to each charity. We offer a hearty “Thank you” to all who par-

ticipated, donated, or purchased at the event.

April was also the annual Colorado State Ladies Auxiliary meeting held in coordination with the Knights of Columbus State Convention.

The venue was the Keystone Resort in Summit County. Activities for the Ladies included two luncheons and a banquet dinner. The an-

nual Presidents’ meeting and Business Meeting completed the weekend. Delegates to the annual meeting voted to contribute all the

proceeds from the 2015 Snow Ball (over $6000) to be divided equally among three Colorado Dioceses and the Knights of Columbus Ultra-

sound Initiative. Three charities also were chosen to receive donations from proceeds earned at the 2014 Fashion Show. Divine Mercy

Supportive Care received $1500, while Children of the Dust Orphanage (Viet Nam) and Fellowship of Catholic University Students each

received $500. St. Patrick Ladies Auxiliary contributed a large box filled with layette items for the annual Culture of Life collection. The

items that were donated will be given to organizations in each of the three Colorado Dioceses. Ann Weida from our Auxiliary also fash-

ioned a generous themed basket for the drawings held at each luncheon. She created a lovely “Garden” basket for the event. Proceeds

from the luncheon drawings will be used to fund the Anna McKinney scholarship awarded to a Catholic student each year. The scholar-

ship for 2015 was awarded to a local student from Our Lady of the Pines parish.

The Annual Colorado State Ladies Auxiliary meeting is an opportunity to recognize contributions from special members of Ladies Auxilia-

ries. Our nominee for Colorado Lady of the Year, Mary Ann Lamecker, received a certificate of recognition for her many contributions to

the Auxiliary, parish, and community. Mary Ann also exhibited the St. Patrick Ladies Auxiliary History Book (scrapbook) at the convention.

Please remember that in May, the Ladies Auxiliary will be hosting the Spring Luncheon on May 16 at Holy Apostles Church. Tickets will be

available prior to the event and the cost is $20. The program will be a look at fashions from the frontier days of the late 1800’s. Two

character actors will perform the program and the luncheon will feature sandwiches, salads, and dessert buffet. You may call me for res-

ervations at 719-232-2988.

Our next meeting will be May 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the Bonzel Hall. We will serve drinks and refreshments at the social hour following the

meeting. We welcome ladies who are interested in learning more about the Auxiliary to attend the meeting and visit with other women of

faith.

Knights of Columbus Council #9993 Resolution

To Support The Home Front Cares [THFC]

Whereas: The Home Front Cares, a local nonprofit organization established in 2003, primarily provides emergency and responsive support and grants for Colorado's service members, veterans and family members, who have been impacted by deployment in harm's way.

And whereas: The Home Front Cares provides emergency grants to pay essential life expenses like rent, utilities, and car repairs. Home Front Cares serves all of Colorado, and has strong partnerships throughout the state with other non-profit and referral agen-cies, military installations, the VA and other veteran service organizations.

And whereas: The Home Front Cares provides grants, not loans, and their clients are vetted to confirm their military service and financial need. In most cases, THFC pays the creditors, such as the landlord or utility company. Despite this due diligence, they are structured to act fast. Many of their grants are approved in less than 24 hours—an essential capability because quite often, their aid is the last "save" that keeps a veteran from being evicted or a military family from having their power turned off.

And whereas: The council held our Annual Benefit (Monte Carlo Style) on October 24, 2014 in support of The Home Front Cares and Saint Patrick Council 9993 charities which allowed us to donate $2000 to The Home Front Cares in November 2014.

And whereas: The Home Front Cares relies solely on donations to provide this critical support of our veterans and their families.

And whereas: The council has sufficient funds to support this resolution.

And whereas: Council #9993 remains firmly committed to supporting our veterans, families and one of our core programs, support to our community.

Therefore be it resolved: That Council donate $1,000 to The Home Front Cares to provide additional funding for their support of our worthy veterans and their families.

To Support Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity

Whereas: Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization. They are dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and to making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. Their ministry was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, decent place to live in dignity and safety.

And whereas: Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity is a local program with an office here in Colorado Springs that is supported by the Parish and Parishioners through donations and assistance in the actual construction and renovation of Habitat homes.

And whereas: Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity homes are not given away but instead they provide families the ability to buy the home through an affordable mortgage and families must also invest their personal time and effort in the construction of the home to qualify for the program.

And whereas: The council held an Monte Carlo Night on 6 April, 2013 to support the hungry and unsheltered in the Colorado Springs which allowed us to donate $1000 to Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity.

And whereas: Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity relies solely on donations to purchase the materials to construct/renovate their homes.

And whereas: The council has sufficient funds to support this resolution and has not provided any support to Pikes Peak Habit for Humanity since 2013.

And whereas: Council #9993 remains firmly committed to supporting our community.

Therefore be it resolved: That Council donate $1,000 to Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity to provide funding for their support that all may have a decent place to live in dignity and safety.

Faithful Friar Mike’s Reflection

In mid May we will be celebrating the Ascension. As we prepare for this feast, I have

the following thoughts.

This is the reason we can trust the Church.

Jesus is already enthroned in heaven, and that throne can never be usurped.

He rules the Church from that unassailable throne, heaven, through his vicar on earth, the pope.

He has chosen to do it that way so that we could all share in his work of redemp-

tion.

As members of the Church, we are members of his body.

We continue in our own lives the work that Jesus did in his earthly life:

spreading the Good News of God's mercy and salvation,

healing those around us by loving our neighbors as ourselves,

and offering our own sufferings to God in union with Christ's sufferings.

In this way, the salvation that Jesus won for the world is gradually being spread throughout the world - through us.

This is why Jesus said, "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations... And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age."

He invites us to be his partners in the business of salvation.

Instead of directing all of our efforts immediately, as if we were his puppets, he guides us through his Church.

There we are sure to find grace in the sacraments and truth of Christ's teaching.

And the guarantee of the trustworthiness of that grace and that truth is, precisely, Christ's ascension - the fact that he is established firmly on an everlasting throne.

And so, when we obey Church teaching in faith and morals, we obey Christ.

If we want to be assured of the fruitfulness and victory of our own efforts in life, we have only to stay united to

Christ by staying united to his Church.

Today, as we renew our bond with Christ and his Church through Holy Communion, let's promise that we will.

CHARITY – HOW HAVE WE DONE – HOW WILL WE DO? By Ron Krom

If you have attended meetings and/or paid attention to our newsletter, you have seen many examples of charita-

ble giving. Below are a listed a few in no particular order. Which ones matter most to you? Have any you want to

add?

In this newsletter, there are more resolutions for other charitable initiatives. One for another donation to the

Home Front Cares, supporting our soldiers in need, and another to provide financial aid to St. May’s High School

Students. Both are indeed worthy causes – either supporting those who put their lives on the line to defend us, or

helping to insure a great Catholic education for our youth. I hope you will come to vote on these on May 13th.

At the last meeting, a question was raised about how we chose the charities we support, and why we didn’t sup-

port a different one that was also very good. That is a very good question and deserving of an answer. There are

basically two ways that we get ideas for charitable projects.

First is from you the member. If you are aware of a worthy charity that fits in the scope of our programs areas

(family, youth, community, church & clergy, culture of life), you may come to an officer meeting on the first

Wednesday of the month and tell us. Contrary to popular notion, anyone can attend the officer meetings and

suggest charitable ideas or other programs. That is how we get new ideas. These can also be brought to regular

business meetings, but there is more time to discuss things at an officer meeting.

Secondly, we occasionally are approached by people from the church or community seeking our assistance. We

can’t help all of them, and we have to evaluate them and make recommendations to the members. In all cases,

members who attend meetings have the final say with their votes.

So your participation in charitable works has at least 4 parts:

(1) Participation in fund-raising projects such as Tootsie Rolls, Monte Carlo Night, or King Soopers cards.

(2) Giving of time and talent to charitable causes like soup kitchen, food pantry, Scouting, etc.

(3) Bringing ideas of charitable projects we can support.

(4) Being present to discuss and vote on projects that are presented to the council. PLEASE, PLEASE take part in

the process. Don’t try to do everything, but pick a couple during the year, and you won’t regret it.

Remember, “it is in giving that we receive.”

The Colorado State Perpetual Memorial Society The Colorado State Perpetual Memorial Society was established by State Deputy Patrick Barrett after the loss of his son Timothy. The purpose of the memorial is to hold in memory and prayer the loved ones of Knights and their fami-lies. Those who are enrolled may be living or deceased. One can also enroll himself. There are many living Members, in-cluding current and past Colorado State Deputies. When a person is enrolled, they or their survivors receive an enroll-ment certificate. Their name is engraved on a plaque which is displayed at the annual State Convention, and also placed on the Society Membership Roll. The names of enrollees may be viewed at the Colorado State K of C Web Page (www.coloradokofc.org) by clicking on the button for “Perpetual Memorial.” Most importantly, at least 100 Masses are said each year for members of the Society. There is also a form on the web page to enroll yourself or your loved one.

The enrollment does cost $50, payable to Colo-rado State Charities, a tax-exempt charity. It is deposited into a charity trust fund, and only the interest is spent for charity, including Mass sti-pends. Currently Masses are being offered by the Capuchins and Xavier Jesuit Center. There are many people enrolled in the Memorial Society who are not deceased, including current and past Colorado State Deputies. So why would we enroll the living? We often pray and offer Masses for those who are ill, fighting serious dis-ease, and so on. What about our troops and first responders who face danger on a regular basis? We are to pray for our clergy and seminarian; for our Brother Knights and their families who are sick or in distress. I’m sure many names come to mind. Why wait until they are departed from us to offer Masses? We can all use God’s grace and healing, especially in times of trial and suffering.
