REGISTRATION IS HAPPENING NOW IN THE MAIN OFFICE FOR INCOMING KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS
FOR THE 2015-2016 SCHOOL YEAR!
Pre-Kindergarten has been very busy this month exploring the concepts of persis-tence and “moving on” to kindergarten. Our most recent books include Miss Bindergarten Gets ready for Kindergarten and The Little Engine That Could. We have learned an enormous amount this year and are very proud of our progress. In mathematics, we are discovering the concepts of weight and balance as well as subtraction. The highlight of this month was Career Day and The Haitian Flag Day parade. Our students enjoyed participating in school-wide events and learn so much from both our visitors and our fellow students. We look forward to our end of the year promotional ceremony and the excitement of entering Kindergarten!!
In Kindergarten, for Reading and Language Arts, the objective was to confirm under-standing of a text read aloud and information presented orally or through other media by asking questions about keys details. The Unit 10 prompted the children to “Think Outside the Box”.
For Mathematics, we have been covering “Getting Ready for Grade 1” and the topic is Composition of Numbers. In this lesson, many parents assisted their child to count with them beyond one hundred. One of the objectives was that children will understand that numbers less than 10 are called ones. For example, the student will know that 10 ones will be the same or equivalent to 1 ten after mastering the lesson.
In French EFL, the students understood and recognized the different French accents; for example, aigu, grave, circonflex, trema, cedille et le tres d’union. The French word Arc-en-ciel which means rainbow in English is a word with two tres d’unions in it. Au Revoir, Bye Bye…
The Second Grade team would like to thank our parents for a successful school year.
As we reflect on this year, it is evident that our students have demonstrated growth in all areas.
Also our students have participated in several events that take them out of the classroom
and into real world life experiences. Our students had the privilege of participating in the KAPOW
Program (Kids and the Power of Work) where businesses and elementary schools work together
to allow the students to gain real world work experiences about various jobs. The students’ experi-
enced hands on job related activities on our field trip.
On April 22, 2015 with Xavier Cortada, an Artist –in-Resident at Florida International
University and several District Administrators, chose several of our students to participate in an
annual “Plant a Tree Earth Day Eco-Art” project. These students shoveled dirt around the base of
an eight foot live oak tree and planted it on the East side of the school for all to see.
On behalf of the 2nd grade team we would like to pay honor to one of our own teachers,
Mrs. Wilson who will be retiring on May 29, 2015. Mrs. Wilson has dedicated 38 years to the
public school system. Her devotion and determination in educating young lives will leave and ev-
erlasting impact on all the lives she has touched. Thank you, Mrs. Wilson for being a wonderful
teacher and teammate!
First Grade has been full of many learning experiences and our students have made a lot of progress in Reading and Math skills this year.
We went to see the play, ”Mixed Up Fairly Tales.” The children really enjoyed the live characters, the setting, and theme of each fairy tale. They were also able to participate in the play.
First graders have now been introduced to second grade skills in reading and math using math manipulatives. All journals and practice books will be sent home at the end of the year. Please review and practice these books in the summer to get ready for 2nd grade!

Peek in Third Grade and you will often see collaborative thinking, working and creating going on. You can still see students discussing a book, sharing strategies for a math challenge,
and of course working in their data driven learning groups. It is important for each third grade
student to master comprehension in order to be successful on the FSA Assessments next school
year. This past semester, students have been working together to create new words using their
vocabulary journals. This will broaden their vocabulary and help them with their reading, math
and science. They are taking these new vocabulary words and learning to use them in complete
sentences. We hope they continue to use their newly learned vocabulary throughout the summer
so they can grow and be challenged next year as 4th Graders!
i-Ready, Reading Plus, MyOn and ReflexMath are now available from home. It is im-
portant to encourage students to complete one session of each daily. This will support reading
and math skills through online practice. The more students read the more they will become famil-
iar with unfamiliar words and math strategies.
As Fourth Grade approaches the closing of the 2014-2015 school year, the students have been working on skills to get them ready for the rigorous course work awaiting them in fifth grade. During the summer, students should continue strengthening reading fluency and comprehension through daily reading of novels, chapter books, newspaper articles, etc… which will also build their vocabulary bank. It is typically recommended that reading should be done for at least 30 minutes per day; however, the more time spent reading the better the academic performance.
Students should also continue to practice and study multiplication and division facts as they will rely heavily on these essential math facts to expeditiously respond to and complete math problems. Science is a state-tested subject area in fifth grade. Students should explore science websites such as studyjams.com to watch videos with insightful information about the various areas of science covered in this grade. As the 4th grade team sends off our students, we wish them a safe, happy and enjoyable summer. Please remember to look at the school supply list here in the newsletter for the new school year for appropriate materials needed for the next grade level. Have a great summer!
As Fifth Grade, we have finally made it to the end of the year and our students have accomplished so much! After
months of preparation, our students had the opportunity to take the FCAT 2.0 Science Test and FSA computer-based test for
Reading & Math back in April. Although testing may be over, there is still so much to do to get our students ready for the next big
hurdle – going off to middle school! As always, technology is a big part of the success of our students as well as continuous pa-
rental involvement. Please ensure that your child is using i-Ready, Reflex Math and Gizmos on a daily basis – even during sum-
mer vacation! In addition, be sure to check the JFK Middle School website for information on required summer assignments and
school supplies they will need for the next school year.
Thursday, May 28th: Fifth Grade Promotional Ceremony – Graduation for our fifth grade students will take place at
NMB Senior High School. Students will be transported by bus from Fulford to NMB Senior High and then directly to Jumbo Buffet
Restaurant for a luncheon. Male students are to wear black or navy blue slacks with a white dress shirt and tie. Female students
are to wear a white/off-white or beige dress and age-appropriate shoes/heels (NO HIGH-HEELS).
On behalf of the fifth grade team, we thank you for your support throughout this school year and for the opportunity to
work with your child. We wish them the very best as a new challenge awaits them in middle school. Have a wonderful summer!

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),
Your child has been developing their reading ability and comprehension all year long. In order to ensure that child continues on that same path throughout the summer, he/she will have the opportunity to engage in our summer reading program. Independent summer reading will help prepare him/her to be successful in meeting more rigorous academic standards of the Florida State Standards. Each grade level has books they will read and explore. In the 2015-2016 school year, your child’s memories and experiences with the book will be show cased. Please take this time to share and lead your child through the joys of reading for pleasure.
You can purchase your child’s book at any book store (i.e. Barnes and Nobles, Walmart, Amazon.com, etc). You can also check out your child’s book at The North Miami Beach Library or a Miami-Dade County Public Library.
Below is a list of the summer reading assignments for Pre-K, K and 1st Grade. Please select one of the following activities to complete with
your child:
Make a picture timeline of all the events in the book, labeling each of the events.
Make a poster about the book using one or two of the following media: finger paint, water colors, crayons, chalk, real materials.
Write an explanation of your poster.
Rewrite the story in picture book form.
