REMINGTON BACALOCOS
SALAYA
Everything happens for a reason. This is what Remington B. Salaya believes
when he topped this year’s National Licensure Examination for Chemical
Engineering. He’s number one of the top seven national board passers which
included University of the Philippines Los Baños, De La Salle University,
University of San Carlos, and Mapua Institute of Technology. Salaya got a
percentage passing rate of 83.30, while CPU got 100% passing rate.
He graduated Cum Laude with the Bachelor of Science in Chemical
Engineering Degree this year from Central Philippine University. Salaya made
his way through University Scholarship, DOST, and Uygongco Foundation
Scholarships. School life was never easy for Salaya whose parents Rizalina
Patricio Bacalocos and Rodelio Sarabia Salaya both passed away without
seeing their son bringing great honor to CPU./ CAN

A UNIVERSITY COMMITTED TO EXEMPLARY CHRISTIAN EDUCATION FOR LIFE (EXCEL) AND RESPONSIVE TO THE NEEDS OF THE TOTAL PERSON AND THE WORLD
Cool ’
It’s terribly hot in May this year when we’re supposed to
receive rain and be cool after that long hot summer
season.
Only a change of weather can minimize the fiery body
experience thought to be a sign of the end times. We
hardly get cool even after an hour of staying in the pool;
water on the beach was hot like water from the faucet.
The El Niño phenomenon will possibly stay longer,
according to the Weather Bureau, and the problem of how
to stay cool will be on everybody.
By the way, the other side of being `cool’ (in colloquial
term) means great, pleasant… satisfying.
It’s `cool` when we receive notice that Centralian athletes
are champions in a national athletic meet, or when some
alumni abroad make a post on social media expressing
gratitude for a job well done by the faculty and staff—with
it’s administrators this past school year 2014-1015.
Ho..ho! We got the one on top of the Chemical
Engineering Licensure National Board Exam passers,
Engr. Remington B. Salaya who was an Uygongco
Foundation Scholar.
Another `cool’ achiever in May is Miss Allana S. Delgado
who topped the 2015 Librarian Licensure Examination.
Allana graduated Cum Laude in her Bachelor of Library
and Information Science. Juliet Castro Gayoso ranked
number 8 in the Licensure Examination for Teachers
(LET), Elementary Education, and others who were
fortunate to pass the Professional Licensure Exams.
For Engr. Barry T. Matutina, CPU Web Development
Administrator, the month of May began with something
great (something cool) on his career. He received notice of
passing the board exam for Electrical Engineers right on
the first day of May. And so when I was informed, I just
told Barry... it’s Cool!
The `cool’ honors in receiving
the list of board passers with
topnotchers by the University not
only identify the diligence and
discipline of students, but on top
of it, the quality of education
that Central Philippine University
has to offer. To God be the Glory!
“I have been hearing different languages from 60 people
coming from 30 countries in the last 20 days here in Maui.” When I read again Acts 2:9-11 I was happy to note that the Gospel has reached more than the first hearers. The first hearers of the Gospel aside from the Jews were the Parthians, Medes, Elamites, residents of Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia, Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, the district of Libya near Cyrene, Jewish and proselyte visitors from Rome, Cretans, and Arabs. Now, the Gospel has been proclaimed to more than the majority of the world's population. It was the Holy Spirit that empowered the Apostles to speak in different languages to reach many nationalities in the Day of Pentecost. And the Holy Spirit has continued to empower many believers to preach the Gospel to many nations. If you want to be empowered to spread the Gospel, then invite the Holy Spirit in your life. The Holy Spirit is waiting to unleash the power of God through your life.

CPU’s pride Jovelyn Gonzaga is Most
Valuable Player (MVP)
Central Philippine University’s pride Jovelyn Gonzaga often brought
pride to this school since she was representing CPU in local and
national volleyball leagues, and competing in Nestea Beach
Volleyball tournaments. Finally reaching the apex of her success,
Gonzaga recently received the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award
making her a member and Ball Captain of the National Team
representing the Philippines in the South East Asian Games in
Singapore 2015.
Gonzaga is the youngest member of the Philippine Army Team
which considers her as a catalyst and integral part of their winning
schemes. She’s a game –changer for the veteran team.
Prior to her stint in the Army Team, Gonzaga joined forces with CPU
teammate Fiola Ceballos and represented the Philippines in the
beach volleyball competitions in the recently concluded Universaide
Games in Russia./ Cyrus A. Natividad

Scientia et Fides (the history series) Editor’s Note: Starting this issue Central Post will feature highlights on the history of CPU in relation
to her One Hundred Tenth Foundation Day in October 2015.
On October 1, 1905, a group of American Baptists Missionaries led by Rev. Dr. William Orison
Brown Valentine established the Jaro Industrial School in Jaro, Iloilo. It started as an elementary
vocational school for boys with Rev. Dr. Valentine as its first principal. All of its students worked
half of the day and studied the other half. It initially enrolled 20 pupils at that time.
In 1912, Dr. Francis Howard Rose and his wife Gertrude arrived in Iloilo City to serve as
missionary teachers at the Jaro Industrial School. They were also involved in he expansion of
the school into a high school, then into a junior college, and later into a four-year college.
Other American missionaries would handle the operation of Jaro Industrial School until it
became Central Philippine College in 1923, and central Philippine University in 1953.
