OBITUARY

It is with deep sorrow that we have to inform about the sad demise of Shri Shankar Gopal Bhide who passed away on 13th January, 2016.

Born June 1933, Mr. Bhide's entire life, a journey of struggle and Sacrifice is awe inspiring and empowering . Starting his career at the S.T. workshop as a helper, apprentice, became a turner, and at IIT, Mumbai, from Mechanic rose to become foreman, Aeronautical Department (1969-75). Lack of formal education and Professional qualification (SSCE) never deterred Shri Bhide in the pursuit of his goals. Later (1976-82) he worked in various capacities with a number of Engineering Units looking after development, Production , Quality control and so on grounding himself to all aspects of Mechanical Engineeering. From 1982 till the age of 77 years, Shri Bhide was an Industrial trainer conducting more than 600 training programmes for workers, supervisors and managers in a number of reputed Industrial

Units like Larsen & Toubro Ltd., Minex Metallurgical Co Ltd, Maxwell Ltd. , Wartsila NSD and so on. His proficiency was such that during this period he also contributed to scientific and technical terminology in Marathi to the Dept. of Languages, Govt. of Maharashtra and contributed 14 articles on Machine Shop topics to the Marathi Encyclopaedia published by the Govt. of Maharashtra. Along with all these Shri Bhide was also busy fulfilling his life mission, “CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR SELF LEARNING FOR INDUSTRIAL WORKERS” by compiling an Encyclopaedia on Machine Shop and Manufacturing Technology in Marathi (1100 pages) which was published by the RAJYA MARATHI VIKAS SANSTHA, MUMBAI a department of the Govt. of Maharashtra .

The Encyclopaedia, an only engineering handbook published in a regional language, a magnum opus took 30 years from conception to book release (1972-2002) and was a labour of Love for Shri Bhide. Dr S.K.Basu, Prof Emeritus, at the College of Engineering, Pune, and eminent author of Books on Machine Tool, who wrote the preface to the book.

Shri Bhide believed that it was the responsibility of the author to take his readers from what is known to what is unknown.

In recognition of his invaluable contribution towards supporting the technical education of the Engineering worker in Maharashtra, the Tata Institute of social Sciences, in Jan 2015 bestowed upon him the title of HONORARY PROFESSOR.

Shri Bhide's passing away is a great loss to the engineering profession in Maharashtra. May his soul rest in peace.
