Happy Birthday Church!

Pentecost is the birthday of the Church! ON Pentecost the Holy Spirit poured out on the

church as they gathered in prayer and God gave birth to the Church!

Do you remember the day you were born?

You don’t remember…but you may have pictures, a birth certificate, and stories of the day

you were born.

On your birthday, you remember the day that God brought you into this world!

On your birthday, others remember you and they too give thanks that God has brought you into the world and

into their lives!

If you ask most children what is the best part of birthday- they’ll likely say cake or presents.

As we get older- we tend to find that the best part of our birthday is being remembered.

The best cards we receive are heartfelt words from friends and family sharing how and why they love you.

It means so much to be remembered, to be thought of, to know that you matter to others.

On Pentecost Sunday, we remember how much the church matters to us.

Because of the church we have a new family in the family of God!

We have a place to call home where we are nurtured in our faith and wrapped in God’s comfort.

Why does church matter to you?

If you were to write God a thank you letter on Pentecost thanking God for the gift of the church what would it

say?

How would you begin to say thank you for the church?

I thank God for my church that first showed me God’s love, Madisonville Presbyterian Church where I

was baptized, where my godmother Mamie Jones let me ring the church bell when I was tall enough to

reach the rope, and where I would sometimes fall asleep between my parents as a toddler on the pew

during Sunday service. This church helped to initiate a stirring of the Holy Spirit in my life which took me

to churches in Lynchburg, Birmingham, Detroit, Atlanta, Springfield, and here to Bermuda Hundred

where God has continued to move in my life stirring, challenging, comforting, and growing me in God’s

grace. I thank God for the Church because the Church gave me my life. The Church through all of these

churches showed me the gift of new life in Christ! The Church taught me that my life has a purpose led

by the power of my Savior.

What has God shown you through the church?

On Sunday, May 15 as we celebrate the birth of the church on Pentecost and the birthday of Bermuda

Hundred UMC celebrating our charter day, we invite you to write down your thanks and joys for

Bermuda Hundred as a gift thanking God for the birth of our church!

Each of us has a story of how God has led us.

For some of us church was a place of comfort, joy, and learning; others have had different stories of

where church was not always place of comfort, but one of hurt. Not all of us have the same story when it

comes to our life in church, but we all do have the opportunity to be the church God calls us to be.

Bermuda Hundred UMC has been opening its doors for the past sixty years sharing the real love of Jesus

Christ!

The Church was birthed on Pentecost to go and make disciples of Jesus Christ and thus transform the

world. Each local church has the opportunity to make a lasting impact on the world because churches

provide the most significant arena through which disciple-making occurs.

I didn’t just become a disciple because of one church… each church God led me to as I moved from place

to place grew me closer to Christ and stronger in the Body of Christ. And I am still growing as a disciple

today. I believe we all are.

The Holy Spirit is still growing the church just as it gave birth to the Church so many years ago on that

first Pentecost.

Next week, the United Methodist Church gathers for

General Conference in Portland, Oregon. 864 delegates

from over 56 nations will gather for 10 days of worship,

prayer, discernment, and thoughtful discussion as to where

God is leading our church. General Conference is the top

legislative body of the United Methodist Church and meets

every four years.

At Pentecost—many different languages were heard as One as the Holy Spirit led them in unity. The Holy

Spirit gave birth to the Church and many people gathered to hear the one voice of God gathering them, equip-

ping them, and sending them to share the good news with the world!

As we give thanks for the birth of the Church and thank God for what the Church has done in our own lives, let

us pray for the Holy Spirit to continue to convict, transform, and send the United Methodist Church to make

disciples. Let us pray for the Holy Spirit to lead the church with clarity, wisdom, and unity so that the world

hears the love of Jesus Christ which transforms hearts and minds.

As we celebrate the birth of the Church universal and of Bermuda Hundred UMC we remember the impact the

church has had on our own lives, and the impact that church has on the world.

Birthdays not only look back to our past, but look forward to what a new year will bring.

As we celebrate Pentecost, let us also look forward to what the Holy Spirit will continue to do in our church and

the Church universal!

I am excited especially for what God is doing in Bermuda Hundred UMC!

I look forward to seeing how the Holy Spirit will move in the next 60 years as we reach new disciples to grow,

strengthen, engage, and build the kingdom of God!

In God’s Love,

Pastor Beth

As we all know 2016 is flying by and we’ve already finished up the first financial quarter. The Finance Committee is pleased to report that we continue to have a healthy financial position. Weekly giving continues to be consistent, which is a key to ensuring the financial health of our church. Through the 1st Quarter deposits were at 23.4% of the overall budget and expenses were at 22.9% of the overall budget. Finance is working with the Trustees to plan for future expenses that may arise later on this year. In April we established a relationship with The Virginia United Methodist Foundation and look forward to a long & healthy relationship. We continue to identify & institute new procedures to ensure the proper checks & balances of our finances. We continue to stay current with our apportionments for the year as well. Once again consistent weekly giving is crucial to ensuring that as a church we stay current and/or ahead of our financial responsibilities. Thank you to membership for the continued support of BHUMC not just in time and talents but also with treasure.

There are eight weeks left in the school year for the Backpack program. The church would like to thank everyone who donated their time to help put the backpacks together, deliver the backpacks, donate food and money. This program would not be possible without all of your support! I would personally like to thank Mary Simmons for being the coordinator for this much needed program. Let us take time to say a prayer for all of the children who may be impacted by school’s summer break, that they may have all of their hunger needs met.

Blessings, Ann McNinch, Missions Chair

United Methodist Women

The month of April was a very busy month for the Bermuda Hundred United Methodist Women and we have many thank yous to deliver.

Our April "Candle Burning Program" was very rewarding with over $300 donated "in honor of" or " in memory of" special people in the lives of church members. We are very grateful for your support and these funds will be used to support children, youth and women through mission programs wherever United Methodist Women are working around the world.

AN AMAZING YARD SALE - OVER $1,100 FUNDS RAISED -- we are always amazed by the level of support we get from our church members and the community when it comes to our yard sales. Thank you to those who contributed, worked to get our sale organized, came to buy the "treasures" for sale, worked on Saturday to sell all the items and pack up/clean up the Fellowship Hall. It takes a lot of hands to make such an event possible and we appreciate all of you who made the sale a success. Start saving your items now for the fall yard sale scheduled for September 24th. You can bring your items to the church from 10AM - 6PM on Friday, the 23rd. We will be looking for winter clothes at this sale - remember no TV sets.

CONFERENCE HEALTH KITS - we are still collecting items for the health kits to be delivered to the Virginia Annual Conference in June. Our goal is 350 health kits and WE NEED YOUR HELP. We will start packing the kits at our May 16th meeting but will continue to collect items through the end of May as we will still have time to get more kits together before the conference in June. Bring any of the below items on any Sunday in May and put them in the large plastic containers in the church. We need:

Wash cloths Hand towels (at least 15" x 25") Nail clippers or metal nail files. Combs (large & sturdy, not pocket/picks) Bath sized bars of soap (3 oz. and up) - No Ivory or Jergens soap. Toothbrushes (single brushes only in original wrapper) - no child-size brushes. Adhesive plastic strip sterile bandages (Band-Aids) One gallon plastic bags

If you don't want to shop but want to help, just make a donation making your check payable to Ber-muda Hundred United Methodist Women and put it in the offering plate any Sunday in May. We will be happy to shop for you. We appreciate any help you can give us.

NEXT MEETING - the UMW will meet on Monday, May 16th at 7PM in the Grundy Par-lor. Besides working on the health kits, our program for the evening will be our yearly Prayer and Self De-nial presentation. This is a gift made from our treasury each year for mission work around the world. Remember, every time you help on one of our UMW projects, you are helping raise money to meet our mission goals.

As always, thank you for your support of our many projects. We would love to have you come join us for any of our meetings. You can count on fun and fellowship as we work hard to help children, youth and women who are in need.
