Dear Congregants and Friends ~

I have just returned from a Southern Poverty Law Center board meeting, which serves, in part, to explain the subject matter of my column this month. I want to begin my column, however, by first noting the commemoration this month of 3 important but lesser known Jewish Holidays, all of which are related and of relatively recent vintage. The first, Yom HaShoah, commemorates perhaps the most tragic event in the 3000 year old Jewish Tradition, the Holocaust. Yom HaShoah is followed by Yom HaZikaron, "The Day of Remembrance", the Holiday honoring those, who have given their lives to defend the State of Israel, a reminder that gaining and maintaining freedom does not happen without significant cost and effort. Yom HaZikaron is then followed by Yom Ha'Atzma'ut, "The Israeli Day of Independence", celebrating the founding of the modern day State of Israel.

The chronological order of these 3 Holidays teaches a subtle but very important message, that being, that whether we are talking about the well-being and future of the State of Israel, the Jewish Tradition, or of our own synagogue, all depend on our doing our part, as Jews and members of C.B.I. community, our best to fulfill the responsibilities resulting from our covenantal relationship with God.

Returning now to the first matter to which I referred in my opening paragraph, I was saddened and disturbed to read, this past week, that a recent study has borne out a fact that I suspected but was reluctant to admit to myself--that harassment, vandalism, and other hostile acts against the Jewish people in our country has increased by 86% in the past 4 months. The SPLC, which tracks hate groups in our country, has similarly documented a significant increase in hate groups in the U.S. over the past 6 months. That hate and anti-Semitic behavior has become far more acceptable in our country is poignantly illustrated in a lawsuit just filed by the Center against the leader of the neo-Nazi hate web-site, The Daily Stormer. For the past several months, he, along with his followers, have been sending hundreds of hateful and threatening communications to a Jewish woman, her husband, their 12 year old son, as well as to the rabbi and other members of the Jewish community, all of whom live in the small but scenic town of Whitefish, MT. What did the woman and her family do to bring on this spate of anti-Semitic hate mail and calls? The mother of one of the leaders of the alt-right movement--the mother and her husband also live in Whitefish--got into a dispute with the Jewish woman. While most of the attacking statements are too scurrilous and hateful for me to include in my column, suffice to say that the defendant in the case distributed to members of the town and the Jewish community pictures of the woman, her husband, their son, and two other Jewish residents of the town, which pictures were superimposed on the entrance to Auschwitz. In addition to the lawsuit filed against the leader of the neo-Nazi web-site, the good news is that most residents in the Whitefish community have come to the support of the family, the rabbi, and the Jewish community. Quoting the great 20th century Rabbi, Abraham Joshua Heschel, "While only a few are guilty, we are all responsible." That we are all responsible to take action in our own way, that we cannot rely solely on others, including God, to fight injustice and bring healing and justice to the world, is made clear in the following midrash from our Tradition. The Israelites in the Torah are caught between the proverbial "rock and the hard place"--the Sea of Reeds is preventing them from moving forward, and they can hear the sound of Pharaoh's charioteers approaching them from the rear. They are understandably frightened and shout out to Moses, their leader, for help. Moses, in turn, seeks to reassure them by telling them that God will provide relief as God has done up to this point in time.

This time, however, God responds by saying that I have done my part getting you to this point; it is time that you and the Israelites start taking some responsibility for your own well-being. It is only after one of the Israelite leaders, Nachshon, enters the water, and then takes the risk of wading deeper and deeper into the water that God finally intervenes and parts the water.

Tanya Gould

A just law is a man made code that squares with the moral law or the law of God. An unjust law is a code that is out of harmony with the moral law. One has not only a legal, but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws. –Martin Luther King, Jr. I have found myself seriously considering the responsibility to disobey unjust laws this past week. On Yom Hashoah I reflected on the courage of the Righteous Gentiles who defied unjust laws to save the life of Jews in World War II. On Tuesday I attended a press conference at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church at which over 20 clergy members announced the creation of a Merrimack Valley Sanctuary Network, which will provide support and sanctuary for undocumented immigrants—in clear violation of what many people view as an unjust law. In preparation to serve as a marshal at the upcoming Day Without Immigrants march in Lawrence, I attended a civil disobedience training that forced me to repeatedly ask, “What non-violent measures would I be willing to take to protect an undocumented immigrant from being arrested and deport-ed—which I see as unjust?” Clearly, discerning between just and unjust laws is not always easy. Although I believe that it is an unjust law that mandates the deportation of undocumented immigrants whose only crime is being here illegally, I can understand those who disagree with me. I just know that I can’t turn away from the plight of America’s undocumented immigrants, and although I’m not comparing our government with Hitler’s Nazi regime, there is something scarily reminiscent when an entire category of people in our country is living in fear. The press conference announcing the creation of a Merrimack Valley Sanctuary Network indicates that many communities of faith in our area believe that the current law regarding undocumented immigrants is unjust. The organization that has brought these faith communities (as well as labor and community groups) together is called the Merrimack Valley Project (MVP). At the next board meeting, the CBI Social Action Committee and I will ask the board to officially join the MVP. MVP has worked since 1989 to promote the welfare of the Merrimack Valley and to achieve lasting justice and prosperity for all. MVP is a well-respected entity in the area, and is known for working within the system to bring about desired change. The Social Action Committee and I want CBI to be part of the good work that is being done by MVP. The vast majority of this work is directed toward changing existing law and policy and working as a community on behalf of the community. Although the Sanctuary Network does entail civil disobedience, people can be involved with MVP without being involved in the Network. So whether you want to engage in some tikun olam and help to change some unjust laws and policies or you want to engage in a bit of civil disobedience, you’ll find an important role to play at MVP. Thank you,

CBI Hosted Holocaust Legacy Partner, Anne E. Richardson

On Monday, April 24, Yom HaShoah, over 20 CBI members and guests attended a Yom HaShoah commemoration event at CBI. The evening began with a delicious dinner prepared by Amy Sherr, followed by a very meaningful and heartfelt service led by Jeff Tye, complete with lighting 6 L’dor V’dor (Generation to Generation) ‘yellow’ yahrzeit candles, representing the 6 million Jews who perished in the Holocaust, as well as readings excerpted from the Rabbinical Assembly’s “Shoah Scroll—A Holocaust Liturgy Commemo-rative Ritual.” Following the service, guest speaker, Anne Richardson, a member of the Holocaust Legacy Partners Program in the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Salem State University, spoke beauti-fully, and shared a video presentation centered around the story of her Survivor/Partner, Mrs. Netty Vanderpol. Everyone who attended the event was moved and inspired to make certain the world will “never forget” and to continue telling and re-telling these important stories, especially as survivors age and will soon be lost to us. Dessert and good conversation rounded out the evening.

CBI Cares Communal Cooking – A Mitzvah Mensch Activity

Do you enjoy cooking? Would you like to participate in a CBI Cares Communal Cooking group? In May we will be cooking in the CBI kitchen and making some soup, entrees and desserts to freeze for CBI families in need. Several CBI Cares Mitzvah Mensches made vegetable soup, lasagna, brownies and cookies this winter to put in the freezer for CBI families. We were able to share this comfort food with CBI members and families during their times of illnesses and sorrow. Join the ranks of Mitzvah Mensches! Please let me know by email if you are interested in joining a CBI Cares Communal Cooking group and include whether evenings, daytime or Sundays are best for you. Thank you! CBI Cares – Not Just Good Food Seeking Kibbitzers and Kibbitzees!

CBI Cares has been successfully providing food for CBI community members when in need.

Now we would like to try to expand to provide visitors for our members who do not get out as much

as they used to. To be able to do this, we require a network of volunteer visitors, or “kibbitzers”, to

visit those members at their homes who would like some company.

If you are not already a CBI Cares Mitzvah Mensch, become one now! Please let me know

by email (address below) if you are willing to be on a list of kibbitzing volunteers. There is no immedi-

ate obligation – you will only be tapped for a particular “Mitzvah Mission” of visiting others and

kibbitzing “should you choose to accept it”.

And for those of you who would like someone from our congregation to visit and kibbitz with

you once in a while, please think about becoming a “kibbitzee”. The target date for starting this

service is June 2017.

Rabbi Mandell’s Lach L’cha Column, continued from page 2

The message is clear--that while we Jews can and should call upon God to protect us, should look to

organizations like the SPLC and the ADL to fight anti-Semitism in our country--we, too, have a responsibil-ity, through our words and actions, to ensure the future well-being of the State of Israel, our Tradition, and our own synagogue!

Lazarus House Update

Thank you to everyone who contributed to another nourishing meal served at Lazarus House on April 30 (this issue of the bulletin is going to press before the gathering, so we can’t acknowledge your generosity individually). We are very grateful for their commitment and look forward to serving at Lazarus House again on Sunday, July 30. Please let Amy know if you’d like to join us at [email protected].

Habitat for Humanity

On Sunday, April 2 Caren Jacobson, Robin Rose, and Susannah Abbott joined with members of Temple Emanuel, Andover to help put some of the finishing touches on a two-family home in Lawrence that will soon be occupied by two refugee families from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. We are very grateful, as always to Tom Baird, our patient and good-humored crew leader, and to our friends at Temple Emanuel for a day of good work and fellowship. It was a lot of fun!

A DAY WITHOUT IMMIGRANTS

Mon, May 1, 2017 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM (with a march through Lawrence at noon) Campagnone Common 200 Common Street Lawrence

Cosecha Lawrence and several other local organizations are calling on immigrants and those who support their rights to participate in a nationwide Day Without Immigrants – immigrants are encouraged to stay home from work and not make any purchases on May 1 as a way of showing the public how much the economy of this country depends on immigrants. Whether you are an immigrant or a descendant of immigrants, these two events are an opportunity to show that members of the Jewish community stand for tolerance and civil rights.

The Social Action Committee welcomes your ideas for tikkun olam. Please let us know if you would like to join us or would like to suggest a project! Amy Friedman Lee and Susannah Abbott Co-Chairs

ANNOUNCING THE MVJF 2017 JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL

DOUBLE FEATURE

Osgood Landing, North Andover

More details coming soon!

FANNY'S JOURNEY - Winner Award for best Film in Hamburg, Audience Awards in Atlanta, San Diego, Denver and Providence

Based on a true story, FANNY'S JOURNEY is an incredible tale of bravery, strength and survival, a story of a daring young girl who will stop at nothing and fear no one. In 1943, 13-year old Fanny and her younger sisters were sent from their home in France to an Italian foster home for Jewish children. When the Nazis arrive in Italy, their caretakers desperately organize the departure of the children to Switzerland. When they are suddenly left on their own, these 11 children do the impossible. In French with subtitles.

THE WOMEN'S BALCONY - Nominated for 5 Israel Academy Awards

When the women's balcony in an Orthodox synagogue in Jerusalem collapses, leaving the rabbi's wife in a coma and the rabbi in shock, the congregation falls into crisis. Charismatic young Rabbi David appears to be a savior after the accident, but slowly starts trying to take control. This tests the women's friendships and creates an almost Lysistrata-type rift between the community's women and men. In Hebrew with subtitles.

CBI’s TREE OF LIFE

It is a tree of life to those who hold fast to it!

Many special occasions in the lives of the members of our Congregation are recorded on the leaves of the Tree of Life in the Sanctuary. There is room for more! To honor the special people and events in the life of your family, please consider having a leaf engraved with a personalized sentiment. For more information on how you can preserve your memories, please contact Amy in the office at [email protected] or 978.474.0540.
