Going to Extremes – Fr. Grand Knight Worthy Knights We are coming to the end of our current Fraternal year and eagerly planning activities for the next. I wish to thank all the wonderful men who have helped over the past year with the planning, execution and staffing of our events and activities. Here is a quick snapshot of our most recent activities: • We hosted a very successful Valentines Dance

and Fundraiser (raising over $9,000), with Blistered Fingers and Freedom Train. Special thanks to the incredible committee of men devoted to this event and the leadership of Brother Rob Castonguay and his wife Theresa.

• We supported with prayers and funds, Kevin D'Souza, who has now successfully passed from being called "Seminarian Kevin," to "Deacon Kevin" and was recently ordained "Father Kevin."

• We participated in the Oakville Special Olympics Flag Raising as a joint Council initiative with Council 3881. Special thanks to the work done by Brother James Montague of Council 3881.

• Brother Tony Saturno again won 1st Place in the 2016-17 Newsletter Award for Division 3 at the State Convention. Brother Tony is stepping back from creating the Newsletter and we will need someone else to help fill his rather large shoes.

• We have sold all tickets for the K of C Charity Raffle being held in June. Thanks to all men who sold tickets. This year proceeds are split between the Arthritis Society and Special Olympics Ontario.

• Our team of volunteers completed the critically important work hosting the School Breakfast Program and All Star Reading Student Mentoring at St. Andrew Catholic Elementary School.

• We are naming one of the two Scholarships that we provide annually to Holy Trinity Catholic

Secondary School in honour Fr. Roger. It will be called the Fr. Roger Formosi Memorial Award.

• The youth programs at Mary Mother of God are continuing to service our younger Parishioners through the Youth Masses and the #AfterMass programs. Special thanks to one of our youngest Knights, D’Arcy Murphy, for leading this program along with my daughter, to whom I am also very proud, Molly Fisher.

• We supported, along with the Catholic Woman’s League and a group of generous Parishioners, the screening of the film entitled the “Euthanasia Deception” with filmmaker Kevin Dunn.

• A participant in our Council’s Substance Abuse Poster Contest is entered in the Supreme Competition. Pictures and more information are available in this newsletter.

Events that are coming up. • On Sat., June 24, 2017 we are to help host the

Oakville Special Olympics Track & Field Tournament thanks to Brother and Head Coach Bingo Rivera. Please consider joining us for an event filled day at Abbey Park High School.

• On Sun., June 25, starting at 4:00 pm is our Annual Family BBQ and Awards Dinner at the church. Cost is $20 for Knights, $10 for adult guests, Children under 13 free.

• Scotch Tasting – this event is a personal goal of mine to have for our Council. I would like to gather, to learn, to taste and to share with others the experience of reviewing the colour of scotch, inhaling the aromatic smell as you swirl it in your glass, feeling the taste in your mouth that awakens your tongue and taste buds, and then the warm feeling that slides down your throat combined with the heat and flavoured aftertaste that lingers in your mouth. Any thoughts?

We are just 3 new members short of our quota for the 2016-2017 Fraternal Year. Please reach out to those whom you know will benefit from becoming a Knight. Vivat Jesus David Fisher – Grand Knight

Deputy Grand Knight Brother Knights,

We have started to enjoy some nice weather this year. On Thu Apr 27, I had the honour to work with our fellow Brother Knights: Tony S (our lead), Ron C, Rob C, Manny M and Lino R on a very rewarding "good works" project: sanding and re-staining the outdoor tables at Northridge Long Term Care Home. The staff at Northridge was very welcoming and grateful. It was especially nice to have Brother Mike join us. It was a great fraternal event! Thanks again to all our Brother

Knights who have supported all our Council's successful events and programs. Please consider joining in our upcoming events:

• Staining the Rectory Fence, May 25 (Jun 3 is the rain date), please contact Brother Tony Saturno if you're able to help out.

• Car Wash and BBQ, Jun 3. • Family Awards and BBQ, Jun 25

It's annual election time. Please consider joining our Council Executive team to coordinate, lead, support or encourage our Council programs.

Let's all please help out and be an active Knight of our Council!

Vivat Jesus Rory Facca – Deputy Grand Knight

Chancellor Fr. Kevin D’Souza Ordination:

Well the day finally arrived and after 4 years of preparation, Deacon Kevin was ordained to the priesthood on Saturday May 6th. The ordination within the Hamilton Diocese took place at the Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King Church. Three other men David Cabral Avila, Ross James Edward Campbell and Pawel Czeslaw Jamroz were ordained along side of Kevin. Presiding over the ordination was the Most Reverend D. Douglas Crosby along with the Most Reverend Matthew F. Ustrzycki Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus one of the many concelebrants of the Mass.

The church was packed and the ordination ceremony began with a procession up the centre isle with all the concelebrants of the Mass, the ordinandi’s and other religious. The first reading was read by Kevin’s daughter Karen D’Souza. After the Gospel, the Rite of Ordination itself began. Steeped in ritual, every step of the process was simply beautiful in the words and actions that transpired. From the Promise of

Obedience, Litany of Supplications, Investiture with Stole and Chasuble, the Anointing of Hands and the Kiss of Peace, all were rich in tradition and quite moving to watch.

At the end of the Mass, the procession moved down the centre isle to the back of the church. What followed next was rather interesting. The newly ordained priests, Bishop Crosby and Auxiliary Bishop Matthew stepped into the side chapel off the narthex of the church where each of the newly ordained priests now blessed both Bishops. It is said that the blessings of a newly ordained priest are the most powerful.

The event was followed by a light lunch in the Church’s reception hall. The four new priests were receiving guests and well wishers and providing blessing to anyone who asked. I was not about to miss out on this unique opportunity so I was very “blessed” to be blessed by Fr. Kevin!

On Sunday May 7th, Fr. Kevin was the celebrant of his first Mass at his former parish of St. Gabriel’s in Burlington Ontario. Again, Fr. Kevin’s daughter Karen D’Souza read the first reading of the Mass. The Concelebrants of the Mass assisted Fr. Kevin with the incensing of the altar and other duties of his inaugural Mass.

It was indeed a beautiful event to watch Fr. Kevin be ordained on Saturday and celebrating his first Mass on Sunday. We are all so very proud of him here at Council 14446 and wish him the very best! We are hoping to have Fr. Kevin attend either an Executive or

General Meeting where we can present him with our Council’s gift.

Fraternal year 2017/2018:

As the new fraternal year is rapidly approaching it is time to start thinking about which charities the council will support. To that end, a call for charity nominations will be made at our June General Meeting. The council’s nominations will be added to the donation requests received throughout the year and voted on in September. More information on this will be included in the June Knight News.

As Chancellor and Chair of the Charity Committee, I would like to thank the Council for its continued hard work to raise funds in support of our charities. In addition, I’d like to thank the members of this year’s Charity Committee for their assistance, direction and dedication!

Mission Statement Knights of Columbus are Catholic gentlemen committed to the exemplification of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, Patriotism and the defense of the priesthood. The Order is consecrated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Order is unequivocal in its loyalty to the Pope, the Vicar of Christ on earth. It is firmly committed to the protection of human life, from conception to natural death, and to the preservation and defense of the family. It was upon these bedrock principles that the Order was founded by Father Michael J. McGivney over a century ago and our Order remains true to them today.

joined Council 3881 and hail from both St. Matthew and St. Andrew Parishes.

New Member: Cleyton Calilung From the Grand Knight: Later in this Knight Newsletter, you will see a set of Member Cards in the Knight’s Showcase, which represent the members of our Council whose birthdays fall in May. I have included this special card here for Cleyton so that we can get to know him a little bit better.

FAMILY BBQ AND AWARDS DINNER Brothers, soon, on June 25, we will once again have our Family BBQ and Awards dinner. In keeping with tradition, this event starts at 4 pm with entertainment for the children, and complimentary beverages.

At about 5:30 pm we will enjoy an excellent buffet with BBQ chicken, sausages, and baked potatoes, as well as our signature salad, rolls and dessert. This gathering gives us an opportunity to reflect on the year, and to celebrate the achievements of our council, both in terms of honouring the volunteers, and remembering the successes.

The emphasis is definitely on Family, and there will be honours for the Family of the Year and Knight of the Year as well. Also in keeping with tradition, weather permitting there will be fun with the knight's Bubble Sword, and other activities. Even just coming to chat with your brother knights and their wives is a treat.

I am new to this role of chairman for the event but I have the reliable help of our past chairman, Rob Castonguay, and some experience with food events of various kinds in the past.

In addition to inviting you to attend, I would like to remind you that many hands make light work, and if you could spare 20 minutes during the evening, you could help with setting up the hall, making the salad, bringing some food from kitchen to buffet, clearing the tables, taking photographs, restocking the beverage table, greeting new arrivals, and helping to bring the food from BBQ to buffet.

If you have participated in the past in any of these roles, you are probably familiar with what's involved, and I would appreciate a quick email reminding me of the roles you had in previous years, how long they took, and how many volunteers you believe are needed for that role to make it easy and efficient.

There will be an Evite email blast soon, asking you for a commitment to attend. This Sunday-afternoon event is a delight and sure to fill our hall to capacity

Vivat Jesus Steve Germann - Family BBQ and Awards Chairman

KNIGHTS PRAY THE ROSARY WITH STUDENTS FROM HALTON CATHOLIC D.S.B.

During the year, members of Mary Mother of God Council #14446, prayed the Rosary with students from St. Andrew’s Catholic Elementary School and Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School. This mission proved to be a very special and rewarding experience for all those involved. These Knights of Columbus members, namely Brothers Thomas Lee, Mario Peluso and Joe Luciani, were part of the Rosary Apostolate from Mary Mother of God Parish.

If you feel that you would like to join our brothers next year, please contact: Erin Bell or Brother Joe Luciani for more details. We are always looking for more people to make a difference with our youth, through our example. Come join us.

On Wednesday, May 3rd, the brothers also participated in a “Crowning of Mary” ceremony at St. Andrew’s School. We were all extremely impressed by the reverence and respect shown by the students, during the Assembly, especially in the younger grades.

“People may forget what you say, but they will never forget how you made them feel”. “Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies”. Mother Teresa

Knight’s Showcase – Member Cards From the Grand Knight: I have put together a set of cards for our members whose birthdays fall in May. For those who wish to get to know the other members of our Council, please check out the information displayed on each card including, the Knight’s name, their significant other’s name, the year he joined the Knight of Columbus, the member’s current degree and any programs to which the member has or does participate. All images have been found on publicly accessible sites or harvested from past issues of our Council’s Knight News. Please let me know whether you like this feature. To create a set of Council 14446 Knight Cards it is recommended that you print out these pages in colour.

Step 1: Cut out both the front and back of each Knight’s card (i.e. do not cut in the middle of the cards.)

Step 2: Fold the front and back together to create a single card.

Step 3: If you have a laminator, laminate each of the cards to protect them.

Step 4: Trade or collect the

full set of Council 14446 cards as they are produced each month.

Information regarding prayers should be directed to Grand Knight David Fisher at [email protected] (905) 617-0366 NOTE: Names have been removed from our active prayer list after appearing in two successive newsletters. Should prayers still be required for these individuals, please contact the Grand Knight and they will be included in future issues. Also, our Newsletter Editor will be checking our website at: http://kofcknights.org/CouncilSite/prayers.asp?CNO=14446 for any new Prayer Requests each month to include in this publication. The website displays these prayer requests for up to one month and then they are hidden from public view. We ask that, before you submit prayer requests identifying individuals with health conditions, you obtain their consent and make sure that they are aware and okay with you posting something online that will be visible and discoverable to the public. Before posting your Prayer Requests, please consider the following: 1. Less is best - post only general and not specific information 2. DO NOT publish detailed, health related prayer concerns 3. Consider this, if you were ill or in the hospital, how much detail would you want released about your condition?
