w e are heading into the final months of the school year. It is still so important to continue to read with your child every evening. Thank you for your ongoing support helping your child be ready to learn and do their best. We started April with Common Area Training. We had all the students take part in learning about how to have a positive school culture. We put up posters and talked about the three b’s, Be responsible, Be safe and Be respectful at each area that we share such as the hallway, washrooms, water fountains, gym, lunch program, music room, computer lab, outdoor yard and play structure. We talked about how to Be responsible, Be safe and Be respectful. Common Area Training is pro-active approach to behaviour management in our building.

Clifton school participated in pink day. We had a whole school assembly and students wore pink to show that they will do their part to stand up against bullying and not be a bystander.

Spring means field trips are starting and teachers are planning many trips to interesting places that support the work the students are doing in the classrooms. It is important for all children to attend because these outings are valuable learning experiences that support what your child has learned in the classroom.

Starting May 1st, we are switching over to a new absence reporting system called Safe Arrival. Please read the insert in the newsletter that gives you more information.

Don’t forget we are taking Nursery and Kindergarten registrations for the fall! If you have a child or know of a child in our catchment area who will be four years old before December 31, 2017, they are eligible for our Nursery program. Children who are five before December 31, 2017 are eligible for our Kindergarten program. News from the Gym…...

I love this time of year with the warmer weather and no snow! It’s such a great opportunity to get outside and be active! Biking, walking, soccer, football, frisbee are just some of the ways that you can be active with your children this time of year! In April, all students worked on a mat games/gymnastics unit. This helped them work on balance and strength skills. In May, runner’s club starts for students in grades 4, 5 and 6. Practices take place during the lunch hour with the final run taking place at Assiniboine Park in June. During class time, students will take part in a badminton unit and then go outside for baseball/softball/t-ball games.

French News

In French, the Grade 4's have been learning the vocabulary for fruits and vegetables. They are currently working in groups to make French versions of Eric Carle's "The Very Hungry Caterpillar." They need to know their fruits, vegetables, days of the week and some junk foods as well. The Grade 5 and 6 classes are working towards the French Cafe that will take place in May sometime. They are also researching a French community from around the world, which they will present to the other students so that the students can fill their passports with stamps.

Music Notes

T his month in Music, the Grades 2-6's went to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra's Adventures in Music show. We heard all the songs we'd been learning in class, as well as a few more. Since our field trip, the Grade 4's have returned to playing our Recorder Karate repertoire and some students have completed all the levels. The Grades 5 and 6's have been playing various Orff pieces like Bear Dance and Amazing Grace. The Grade 5's and Grade 2's performed a beautiful dance to Alessia Cara's "Scars to Your Beautiful" for Pink Day. The Advanced Bells will be playing at the Annual Spring Ring, taking place at Sturgeon Creek United Church on April 29th. They were invited after receiving the Manitoba Guild of Handbell Ringers Trophy at the Winnipeg Music Festival.

Mrs. Bodner

T he month of April in room 9 was filled with an abundance of learning and delight. The Kindergarten and Nursery students enjoyed working on letter recognition and math concepts on the light table. The Nursery and Kindergarten students also enjoyed the grocery store in the dramatic play center. Lots of healthy food talk, as well as sharing and taking turns was overheard each day in the dramatic play center. It was also a pure joy to see every student wearing pink on April 12th. Clifton’s day of Pink was a huge success and it was humbling to see the involvement of the Nursery and Kindergarten students. On April 28th we also had our first all-day field trip. Room 9 and room 10 enjoyed visiting the Winnipeg International Storytelling Festival at MTYP. On this field trip students had the opportunity to create puppets for their own personal puppet show, as well as view other ways of communicating and sharing stories. It was such a joyous and wonderful opportunity to experience the MTYP with the parents and students in room 9. May will be another busy month. As a class we hope to explore the outdoors and the community around us. We are also looking forward to the field trip to Boonstra Farm on May 26th. Let’s hope for sunny and warm weather for our all-day field trip with Mrs. Lagadi and Mrs. Neopon’s classes. As always please contact me at [email protected] and I look forward to another wonderful month in room 9.

I hope everyone had a great Spring Break and had a chance to enjoy our beautiful Spring weather. It is hard to believe that April is over and we are already into May! This year has been going by so quickly! Our first field trip to the Children’s Museum was a great success! The students enjoyed learning about some different kinds of animals and what sort of homes they live in. I hope they had a chance to show off their interesting bird feeders that they made. After asking the students what their favorite part of the museum was most seemed to enjoy the train the best.

It was wonderful to see everyone at the Student-Led Conferences on March 16th & 17th. The children really enjoyed showing all of the work they have been doing this past term. In April we were busy with many interesting and fun activities. Show and Tell began which the children were very excited about. Remember we do Show and Tell during the first week of April, May and June. As well, we spent time further developing our fine motor skills. This included finger and hand strengthening exercises, learning proper pencil grip and scissor

cutting activities. In May and June we will be continuing to develop our fine motor skills. The students will be starting to “sign-in” each morning and get practice printing their name. As we move closer to the end of Nursery we are working hard to get prepared for Kindergarten. As it is the season of Spring, look for all kinds of beautiful and colorful creations to be on display and brought home. We will also be going on our final field trip on May 26th! We will be going to Boonstra Farms in Stonewall for a full day of fun and learning! Watch for the field trip permission form to be coming home soon!

Mrs. Lagadi

D uring the month of March the students did an inquiry on Dinosaurs through poems, songs, stories, art and dramatic play. They attended the Manitoba Museum of Man and Nature to explore the dinosaurs a little closer. The children were very engaged in learning as much as the could about meat/plant eaters, names of dinosaurs, their habitat and what kind of food they ate. They also discovered the various sizes of the dinosaurs and measured them to gain a greater understanding of how big they were. To culminate this unit the children put on a dinosaur show. All families were invited to come and see what the children were learning about. At the show the students sang a few dinosaur songs and displayed their dinosaur dioramas that they worked on endlessly. They also wrote a story to go along with their scene. Thank you to all the parents for attending I know it meant a lot to the children. Our next theme in April was ‘All About Me'. The children have begun learning about the distinguishing features that they each have. We have discovered the many things we have in common and the many things that make us unique and special. Through this we have made amazing portraits of ourselves. We also explored our physical characteristics, our emotions and our likes and dislikes. The children also created a giant poster showing what they looked like as a baby and comparing how they have grown and the changes in their appearances. The poster also included their home family, age and favorite color. The children enjoyed sharing their poster with their classmates. We have been spending time as well working on our many math skills. At our centres we are playing many games on how to show a number in different ways, instantly recognizing a dot pattern and a ten frame. We have been counting to 100 to celebrate our 100th day of being at school. That is a high number but you'd be surprised how many kids can do it. We also have been counting by 2's to 10, 5's to 30 and of course 10's to 100.

A pril has been an exciting month of learning in room 11. We had a wonderful time learning about our “Five Senses.” The children have participate in a variety of hands on learning experience. They have been learning to ask ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions, and to research the answers for their questions and to deepen their learning. In math the children are developing their skills in addition, subtraction, and place value. They are also working on mental math strategies, counting on, counting back and using their addition knowledge to help them subtract. Please practice the basic math facts with your child in addition and subtraction to 20. Also, please practice counting forward and backward with your child from random starting points by 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s to 100. Thank you for all of you support and cooperation.

Mrs. Funk-Lawson

Grade 1—Room 11

A pril was a very exciting month for the Grade One students in Language Arts. We published our FIRST BOOK!!! We used green screen technology to jump into the pages of our favorite guided reading books and wrote our own stories. The students needed to think about and use what they already knew about the characters in their favorite books and add themselves as a new character. They needed a beginning, middle and end and tried to use exciting words and ideas. The students wrote their stories over many days and were expected to read it over many times to add more and make corrections. Finally, each student edited their story with an adult and made a final good copy to share. We celebrated all this hard work by publishing a compilation of all our stories into one book. If you have not seen it yet please ask your child to share it with you. We have also been working hard on our spelling program "Making Words". Each week we use 6 or 7 letters to make 10 different words. This activity has really helped the students see patterns in words and sound chunks that help them to be more independent in both reading and writing. They get a new spelling list every week so please help you child practice these words. And of course we have been reading and reading and doing more reading! We are working hard to become as independent as possible in solving unknown words by re-reading, looking for patterns or sound chunks and making sure our reading makes sense and sounds right. This is the last term of school so it is even more important to make time for daily home reading so that your child is well prepared for Grade Two.

The students in Room 2 came back well rested from Spring break and have been hard work. Here are some of the things we are currently working on in our classroom: In Science, we are starting our unit on growth and changes in plants. The students were excited to plant seeds and are looking forward to watching them grow! In Math, we have been practicing division strategies and working on our problem solving skills. We also do DreamBox every day for 30 minutes and our class has done over 5000 lessons!

Reminder to all parents/guardians that students should be reading each day for 20 minutes and completing a home reading log. Students also bring a short write-up home each Friday to tell you what we have been doing that week. You can also follow us on Twitter: @cliftoneagles04 Please feel free to contact me at the school if you have any questions or concerns.

A pril has been another busy month. We continue to read, read and read some more during our Reading Group sessions. We are learning about expository text (informational text) and how to collect information from our reading for research purposes. We have also been reading about butterflies and their life cycle. We have been learning about the four stages of change and all the amazing things that happen during these phases. In Math, we continue to work with numbers in the 100s but are working our way up to a 1000. We have been playing games to practise our facts to 20 and 50 in addition and subtraction. We have also been working on some interesting 2 step math problems. We used different strategies to figure out how much water we could consume in one month. We are keeping track of the amount of litres of water we are drinking from our new water fountain station. That was a challenge! We have also started learning about fractions and how we use them in

everyday life situations. Thank you for continuing to work with your child on reading every night. Every bit helps! Please continue to work on Dreambox as well. This program helps your child practise and solidify important skills and concepts we have learned in the classroom.

H ello, my name is Fevisthyl and I am a student in the Grade 6 class! This past month was very exciting. We finally finished our design process prototypes! The prototypes were very creative and sustainable. On April 12, the students organized an assembly about anti bullying in support of Pink day. All the students wore pink and we made a pledge to stop bullying. Ten people from the grade 6 class went to Right to Play Day on April 7th to learn about games that promote equal rights! It was an active, fun –filled day with a lot of learning. On April 24, the patrols went to Omand’s Creek where we picked up litter around the creek with members of CAA to celebrate Earth Day. It saddened me to see so much litter in a beautiful community place. Let’s all protect our Earth. Sincerely, Fevisthyl

A pril has slipped away and it is now May! This is what we did in our class in April. We started the month off by going to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. It was a great time. We also did a really fun activity called Show, Not Tell. It is where we had to draw a picture that shows a specific feeling. After, we had to write a descriptive paragraph that describes that feeling word without actually ever mentioning that word in our writing. It was a lot of fun to do. We also started learn-ing about fractions. We learned that fractions are numbers that are divided into equal parts of a whole object or a set of objects. We've been doing a lot of hands-on activities to help us learn. That is what we did during the month of April.

A s you may know, we have a foster child that we sponsor and her name is Mafata. She is 12 years old and lives in Guinea, Africa. She lives with her parents, brother, and grandfather, in a home made out of brick, a metal roof and cement floor. On May 19, 2017 we will be having a pizza lunch as a Fundraiser for Mafata and her family. Please help us support them.

S tudents in Room 32 have been learning so many new things! In Science we have been learning about the Human Body and the nutrients our bodies need to function well. We will also be learning about the systems of the body including the skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems and we will learn about the role of each system in the human body. In Social Studies we have been learning about the First Nations people of Canada and their daily life, culture, leadership and beliefs before and during early contact with Europeans. In Math we have been learning about fractions and how a fraction represents a portion of a whole divided into equal parts. We have also been discussing how fractions are used in everyday life, for example: to measure ingredients when we are cooking and baking as well as when we use money (25 cents is one quarter of a dollar) In Language Arts we continue to read, write and work with words daily.
