2 North Dakota Rodeo Association ★ May 2017

Spring is here and the rodeo season is just around the corner. Kicking off our NDRA rodeo season June

2 through the 4 will be Medora & Elgin. This will be a busy weekend as it tends to draw a lot of contestants

that first weekend of rodeo season.

We would strongly suggest that everyone please take care of purchasing your membership early to save

some money as the price of memberships increase after May 31st. You can purchase your membership

online securely or you can download and print off a form and mail a check to our secretary. By purchasing

early, it saves time when paying your fees in Medora or Elgin and helps save a lot of stress on our new

secretary. The following are our membership pricing:

Memberships purchased before May 31st:

Single Membership: $100

Family Membership: $150

Memberships received after May 31st:

Single Membership: $125

Family Membership: $200

A question that is always brought up is why the NDRA needs to obtain a Social Security Number when

completing out a membership. We do this as the NDRA occasionally does payouts for rodeos throughout

the year and we are required by the IRS rules to submit a 1099 MISC to those payees that were paid in

excess of $600 throughout the whole year. Our secretary will be checking our database for those that

will be receiving checks from the NDRA and if there is no number on file, we will withhold the check until

a proper social security number is obtained. So for those of you that are worried about purchasing your

membership online through the NDRA website, your information is securely entered and transmitted to us.

As always, we are thankful for those rodeo committees that continue to work hard to produce a NDRA

rodeo so that we can compete. Without those committees, we would not have a place to travel to and

perform. I ask that you please tell them thanks for their hard work and to also say a kind word to a sponsor

of rodeo, just a little thanks goes a long way.

I wish everyone the best of luck and safe travels from rodeo to rodeo in 2017!

Happy Trails!JD Bubel, NDRA President

Attention High School Contestants!

If you are a member of the North Dakota High School Rodeo Association or North Dakota Junior High

School Division, the NDRA has waived the requirement to purchase a NDRA membership in order to enter

and compete at a NDRA first sanctioned rodeo. We do require you to fill out a membership form so that

you can sign the release before you compete at the NDRA rodeo.

Also, we have changed the way the Rookie Cowboy and Cowgirl are chosen. A High School student may

rodeo with their High School membership at NDRA rodeos, BUT, they must notify the NDRA secretary prior

to competing during a season if they want it to count towards Rookie of The Year. For example, if a high

school member wants to compete their Freshmen through Junior year without declaring it their rookie

year, they may do so and declare their Senior year as their Rookie year. The NDRA encourages those high

school members to participate at our sanctioned rodeos.

If you have any questions about the NDRA, please give our secretary Chelsey a call at 701.516.4333 or

email at [email protected]

2017 NDRA Finals

The NDRA has selected Watford City, ND to host the 2017-2019 finals rodeo. The finals will be held in

the Multipurpose Building on the fairgrounds September 29 & 30, 2017. The finals purse was increased by

$500 per event which makes the total prize money for the finals for all events at $35,000.

The finals committee will keep us updated as to where the host hotel will be and what events will be

taking place during the weekend and we will pass along this information when we receive it. Be sure to like

us on Facebook to keep up to date on things that are happening with the NDRA!

The awards for the finals and year end champions is being scheduled to take place Sunday morning

October 1st, 2017 with a brunch so that sponsors are able to attend and present the awards to the winners.

We are opting to do this since there are so much going on after the rodeo and to highlight those businesses

that sponsored an award for our contestants.

Greetings From The President

May 2017 ★ North Dakota Rodeo Association 3

No new rule books will be printed,

please refer to the online version of

rule book for current rules in effect. 2017 Rule Changes

These rules were motioned and voted on during the 2017 NDRA annual meeting. Per the NDRA rules these must have a second reading and voted on again before they would take effect in the spring of 2017.

Entry Fees, Turnouts, Draw Outs6. Contestants entered by central entry and failing to appear at a rodeo will pay a $50 fine plus the total of the Entry Fees and whichever

fee was in effect from Rule A or Rule B for that rodeo. However, contestants failing to appear at a rodeo may submit their regular entry fees and not be subject to the fine, provided that the entry fee plus whichever fee was in effect from Rule A or Rule B are submitted to the rodeo secretary before the payoff is calculated or by the end of the last performance, whichever comes first. The entry fee will be added to the purse and the appropriate Rule A or Rule B fee will be given to the committee responsible for producing the rodeo and other fees are given to NDRA.

Central Entry6. When entries close, all team ropers will be entered with a designated partner. If a team roping partner draws out during call backs, the

team will be withdrawn unless another partner is entered during call backs.

Dally Team Roping3. Each contestant will be allowed to carry but one rope. Each team allowed only two loops, one loop at each end. Roping steers without

turning loose of the loop will be considered no catch. Any heeler 50 years of age or older in addition to any female may tie hard and fast.4. a. Roper must rope, dally and change direction of steer. The direction of the steer’s body must be changed before the heel loop can be

thrown. However, if the steer stops, it must only be moving forward for the heel loop to be legal. Any heel loop thrown before the completion of the initial switch will be considered a crossfire and no time will be recorded.

4. b. Time will be taken when steer is roped, both horses facing steer in line with ropes dallied and tight. Horse’s front feet must be on the ground and ropers mounted when time is taken. Steer must be standing up when roped by head or heels.

NDRA Humane Treatment of Livestock22. A fine imposed for inhumane treatment of a roughstock or timed event animal by a contestant shall be split 75% to the stock contractor

and 25% to the NDRA. All other inhumane treatment infractions not relating to an animal of a stock contractor are to be kept by the NDRA.

Team Roping Payout:4 places <$2,0006 places $2,000.01-3,5008 places $3,500.01-4,50010 places > $4,500.01 Sr. Mens’ Breakaway:Score length to be set the same as the Ladies Breakaway score.

Change references of Calf Roping to Tied Down Roping in the rulebook.

Change references of Barrel Racing to Ladies Barrel Racing in the rulebook.
