It Only Took FOREVER, but SPRINGTIME is HERE!

From the Art of Simple – by Tsh Oxenreider

Spring is here, and for us Calgarians, it might feel like it took forever! It’s one of the best seasons for being outside. In our heated, drive everywhere, year-round produce section of the world, it’s easy to ignore the organic, orchestrated rhythm of nature and life. Generations past appreciated each season for what it provided and for what it required, and we don’t want that to die with ours.

Here’s a few ways to fully relish the spring:

1. Eat as seasonally as you can. Appreciate the spring season for what it provides, this means asparagus, to-matoes, berries! Yum yum

2. Eat locally, so that your food is seasonal. See if you can source part of your food from a 100-mile radius.

3. See if you can visit a farm as a family maybe by joining a community farming group. This is an easy, fun way to ensure your food was grown nearby.

4. Go camping. This is my favorite activity. Although it could get chilly in the evenings, it’s so much better than 20 cm of snow!

5. Fly a kite. There’s only so many days in the year this is possible.

6. Eat your meals outside. Dining al fresco can only be done in Calgary two months of the year… (comfortably).

7. Do what you’d normally do, but outside. Drape a blanket over the grass, and read, play, study, or talk. Take our morning weekend coffee in your deck.

8.  Cultivate a little garden. Or join our Deer Ridge community garden.

9. On Earth Day (April 22), research one way your family can be kinder to the environment.

10. Get your hobby on. There’s something about spring that makes me want to read good novels. For you, perhaps it’s scrapbooking, or photography, or sewing. Or lying in the hammock. Do what you can outside.

11. Go hiking, or even just walking. Get your legs moving and soak in the pleasant weather.

12. Check out nature books on bugs, birds,  leaves, and wildflowers. Keep them handy when your kids find discoveries in their outdoor playtime. Together, research the names of your finds.

13. Start spring cleaning. Take a week or two to refresh and declutter your home. Take advantage of your com-munity clean-up day.

14. Redecorate in small ways to celebrate the spring season. Add some greenery inside, open the windows, and brighten up your color palette.

15. Feed ducks living in a local pond. Simple, old-fashioned, fun. Don’t overload them, and don’t use bread.

16. Build a bird feeder, bird bath, or bird house for your backyard or balcony.

17. Go to a local wildlife sanctuary or preserve. It’s much nicer when the weather hasn’t gotten too hot yet.

18. Try line drying your clothes, even just for a month or two. This is another task done by most other cultures around the world, and the spring breeze makes this timeless household task go quickly.

19. Visit the farmers market as a family.20.  Go on a wildflower drive and stop to sketch the flowers.

It Only Took FOREVER, but SPRINGTIME is HERE!

City Compost

A lot of us were pretty excited last year when the City of Calgary delivered the green bins for compost collec-tion. This stuff now bypasses the landfill, and further-more, makes something useful of our leaves, household scraps, garden debris, and pet waste (imagine that!). Now that we are well into our first year of this program, I had questions, as I imagine many people have, and went looking for answers.

The City’s website, Calgary.ca, is well laid-out and has most everything to answer our queries. Programs and Services - Environment is where the compost infor-mation lives. So here is what happens to our bags of kitchen eggshells and avocado skins, dog poo, kitty litter and tree branches: the trucks take all this ma-terial to one of three huge buildings in SE Calgary at the Shepard Waste Management Facility and deposit it inside for treatment. There it is shredded into small pieces, aerated, moistened and heated to 55 degrees Celsius for long enough to kill pathogens that are pres-ent in kitchen and pet waste, such as e-coli and salmo-nella. Then it is screened to even smaller size, moved to the curing building and stirred, aerated and cooled down on its way to becoming compost, safe for use in parks, farms, nurseries and gardens. The process takes approximately 60 days from start to finish, much less time than our back-yard composters take with only the sun as a source of heat. At the same time, in nearby but separate vessels, waste (known as biosolids) from our water treatment facilities is being mixed with wood chips and made into a similar but different compost which will ultimately be spread on agricultural land. That is the process, in a nutshell. Samples of this Cat-egory A compost are routinely sent to a Compost Qual-

ity Alliance lab for analysis to ensure that it passes the criteria set by the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment. Ergo, it shall be safe for us to put on our gardens.

Beginning in May, there will be free compost available to the public, who has been paying to have this material created. According to the City manager I spoke to, on Saturdays we can go to the site (they will let us know where, in due course) with our shovels and containers and take home this lovely stuff to amend our soil and grow better gardens. Yay! A total of 5% of the volume will be set aside for this purpose. Later in 2018, City Council is looking into reducing the weekly pick-up of the green bin to every second week in the winter months when there is no garden material. Hopefully, they will reduce our monthly charge at the same time. That would be fair, don’t you think? By the way, the de-partment is happy to host tours of 10 or more citizens at appropriate times. Sounds like an interesting field trip to me.

CALGARY WILDLIFE

WaterfowlWaterfowl are known for their territorial aggression and often unusual choices of nesting sites. In the spring, downtown rooftops become the choice nesting loca-tions for geese, while ducks tend to take up residence in suburban gardens and bushes. Understanding how these animals nest and raise their young will help these animals and the people who interact with them peace-fully co-exist.

Did you know?

•Geese tend to be monogamous and will often return to the same nesting site year after year

•Female geese and ducks are less able to fly before they are about to lay their eggs. The male will defend his mate and nest while she is vulnerable

•Geese and ducks incubate their eggs for between 3 and 4 weeks and once their eggs have hatched, it can take goslings and ducklings over 2 months to learn to fly

•Geese and Ducks are protected by the migratory bird act of Canada; their nests are federally protected. Tampering or interfering with an active nest is against the law

•Goslings can safely drop up to 5 stories onto grass or up to 2 stories on pavement

•Ducks and Geese produce ‘precocial’ young, meaning that once a duckling or gosling is hatched it is fully feathered, with eyes open and is capable of walking and foraging for food on its own

•Geese nest away from water and often cross busy roads as they bring their young to water. This walk is important to strengthen young waterfowl’s legs and give them time to waterproof their feathers

•It is not normal to find young waterfowl alone; if you find a lone duckling or gosling it needs help!

•Bread is harmful to waterfowl; please don’t feed wa-terfowl bread!

If you find an injured or orphaned wild animal in distress, please contact the Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society hotline at 403-239- 2488, for tips, instructions and advice, or look at the website atwww.calgarywildlife.org for more information.

A 2015 study from Harvard University’s Centre on the Developing Child found that the most common fac-tor among children who do well in life is a stable and committed relationship with at least one adult. Their findings, along with research from the Alberta Fam-ily Wellness Initiative, continue to inform our focus on champions, difference makers and coaches. A recent OurSCHOOL survey indicates over 90 per cent of our Grade 4-12 students feel they have a meaningful rela-tionship with an adult—a champion—who they can turn to for guidance and support.

Our teachers also use Mental Health Literacy Go-To-Educator training and the Mental Health Literacy cur-riculum to advance connections and counsel students. Combined, these resources will see more than 1,400 dis-trict educators understand some of the complexities of mental health by the end of the school year.

Providing environments that support excellence in learning and teaching is an important part of student wellness. The district’s 2019-2022 Capital Plan, which focuses on innovation, efficiency and sustainability, includes an undercurrent of wellness. Our recently an-nounced new K-6 school in Evanston and 26 other capi-tal projects provide learning spaces where students can think, feel and act in ways that help them to enjoy life and develop the ability to deal with its challenges. And we know that students benefit from these supportive spaces.

The 2017 District Satisfaction Survey shows that 89.3 per cent of parents, legal guardians, students and teach-ers agree that our schools offer safe, welcoming learn-ing spaces that respect diversity and foster inclusive communities.

At Calgary Catholic, we know that significant relation-ships and welcoming environments positively impact the well-being of students. The Board of Trustees will continue to prioritize student wellness to ensure the district provides our children with the support they need to reach their full academic, spiritual and social potential.

About WineBy Nik Rasula

About Wine features wines not typically on one’s shopping radar. Unique wines with a story to tell; of place, process or style. Highlighting artisanal producers making reasonably priced (under $50 retail) wines, all the while demonstrating careful earth consideration.

2016, Mendraka, Bizkaiko Txakolina, Basque Country, Spain (www.mendraka.com)

About the Region: The province of Bizkaiko (Biscay) lies within the fiercely independent Basque Country of Spain. Adjacent to the Atlantic coastline’s Bay of Biscay, it straddles the Pyrenees of northeast Spain and southwest France. Featuring its own language (Basque), its centres include Bilbao, San Sebastian and Pamplona (Running of the Bulls, anyone?).

About the Wine: Txakoli (pronounced CHAK-o-lee) is an historic wine typically produced for local Basque consump-tion. Traditionally poured from showy heights in pintxos (tapas bars), it can be made in both sparkling and still styles, with the still being considered the “serious” version.

About the Grape: Native to the province, Hondarrabi Zuri is the main grape used in making white Txakoli.

About the Estate: Located 30 km southeast of Bilbao, the winemaking Jatorri-Izena family resides in the rural Men-draka area that gives the wine its name. With stunning vis-tas of the Pyrenees as a backdrop, the vineyards consist of eight-hectares of rolling hillside at 250 m.a.s.l. Outfitted with modern technology, the winemaking cellar is housed in a 400-year-old building formerly used to shelter cattle and winterfeed…ah, barnyard aromas!

About Sustainability: Sustainable winemaking.

About Tasting: The still, light golden appearance features slight green highlights. Mendraka features aromas of min-erals, fresh pear and green apple. On the palate, medium-bodied mouthwatering flavours of white fruit rise and fall, as a chalky impression concludes the tasting experience.

About Pairing: Charcuterie, pan-fried fish, intense/pick-led dishes.

About Availability: Check liquorconnect.com (call the listed store too) confirming availability.

Councillor, Ward 14 Peter Demong

www.calgary.ca/ward14 [email protected] or 403-268-1653

Hello everyone!

Lois Walsh has served in different roles with the Council-lors’ Office for 22 years, and she has served as my Ex-ecutive Assistant since I began as Councillor. There is no doubt she has made a positive mark on Calgary and Ward 14. Thank you, Lois, for your service, and have a wonderful retirement!

…and welcome to her replacement, Lynne Banning, who is no slouch either. Lynne will be at Counciltalk if you would like to meet her.

CounciltalkThe May Counciltalk will be held on May 5 from noon to 2 p.m. at Deer Park United Church (77 Deer Point Road S.E.) in Deer Ridge. I hope you can make it, because I be-lieve it is a truly important exercise. If not, you can find details on the next Counciltalk at calgary.ca/counciltalk.

Transparency from City CouncilOne of the reasons I created Counciltalk was that I believe Council members—and their decision-making process—should be available to the public. I am undertaking some work to make Council more transparent, and you can read more about it at calgary.ca/ward14newsletter.

CannabisThe legalization of cannabis is a huge deal for Canadian municipalities. We have had to react quickly to the changes coming from Ottawa, and we are trying to do so as thoughtfully as possible. Visit calgary.ca/ward14newsletter to read about the rules that will apply to Calgarians regarding cannabis.

PotholesCalgary’s weather does a number on our streets. There is no doubt. I am going to go into detail about our road maintenance, and how to get that annoying pothole fixed in my full column at calgary.ca/ward14newsletter.

As always, please feel free to contact me and my team at any time. The best way to do so is by visiting calgary.ca/contactward14.

Spring is finally here and hopefully April showers (and snow!) bring May flowers. I know for many of us winter has been long and arduous, but now it is time to put the snow shovels away, enjoy the fresh buds of nature and prepare for May long weekend and outdoor living! Whether we are camping, planting our gardens or hik-ing in the Rockies, remember to enjoy the beauty and bounty Alberta has to offer.

The Spring Session is in full swing and much has been going on at the Alberta Legislature. I continue to be your outspoken voice now and into the future.

A couple of years ago one of my constituent brought a long standing and some might say archaic, law to my attention. It is called “adverse possession” but is com-monly known as squatter’s rights. I have since worked diligently to abolish it. While many of us “urban” Alber-tans see the issue more as a rural one, it is an issue that clearly can impact all Albertans. In the words of my af-fected constituent “every home owner, with a misplaced fence over 10 years old, could be subject to a legal claim against their registered land title”. Alberta and Nova Scotia are the only two provinces with this law still on the books. Adverse Possession supersedes any clear title, title registration, real property report or other documentation generally thought of as securing your ownership rights, but quite simply, if the conditions of the current law are met, you could be subject to land seizure without compensation. In my opinion, adverse possession is outdated and has no reasonable justifica-tion for continuance as a law of the land. I am hopeful my Private Members Bill 204 will rectify this and protect all Albertans from unexpected land seizure.

Please join me for my annual STAMPEDE BBQ on Sat-urday July 7th from 11am-2pm. We will once again be shouting YEE HAW with Spolumbo’s, refreshments, live music from Barter and Cash, games, prizes, and ice cream.

As always, I welcome your communication and feed-back. My next MLA Café’s will be on Friday, May 4th and 11th 10-1130am and Tuesday, May 22nd from 5-7 pm at my office. Happy Spring and see you soon!

SCHOOL SHOUT-OUTS

St Bonaventure SchoolSpring results in many culminating competitions so that students can put the skills they have acquired throughout the year to use. In the fine arts department, both the junior and senior bands performed at vari-ous competitions in April. We anticipate some superior marks as that was an assessment of an earlier perfor-mance the bands attended in February.

A group of Grade 9 girls will have an opportunity to attend the Explore IT conference. Another group of Grade 8s and 9s are looking forward to competing in a robotics competition to be held this month. As well, our Spanish students continue to take advantage of vari-ous opportunities that enhance their Spanish speaking skills.

Athletically, the badminton season is in full swing with city finals scheduled for the beginning of May at which St. Bonaventure is looking to defend their title as tier champions.
