Plan>Do>Review> means better activities, more fun, and your

Section or small team gets to choose and get involved in

organising its own adventures. It helps ensure everyone has a

fun, challenging, adventurous and inclusive time in Scouting.

It can be used in all Sections of the program.

The role of youth in leading, and adults in supporting this

process will look a bit different from Section to Section;

remember it is about involving youth meaningfully in the whole

process.

HELLO NORTH WEST REGION!

April is almost done and almost everyone is on School Holidays—hopefully the lucky

Northwesters who are on Holidays away will travel safe and have loads of fun. We are

still very busy in the North West and have quite a number of things to do in the coming

term.

Last month I mentioned that we were in the Annual Report Presentation (A.R.P.)

season and Group Leaders were trying to coordinate the Group’s very important

meetings. If you haven’t held your A.R.P. yet please give your Group Leader a call and

see if he needs a hand. I have found that these meetings can be as little or as big as you

want it to be and if run right, they can be of great value to the Group.

Working on this theme of A.R.P.’s, does anyone remember the wide game that we held

last year in Tamworth for the Region A.R.P.? For those lucky enough to attend we had

108 members attend and have a great deal of fun as we ran a wide game through

Tamworth and ended up in the local cinemas eating an ice cream. Well this year we are

having another Wide Game and this time it will be in Moree! I will be talking with the 1st

Moree Scout Group this week to start the event being organised and already some of the

Moree Leaders are thinking right out of the box for activities.

I would ask you all to put the weekend of the 26th

and 27th

of May into your term

planners and start getting numbers and transport organised—the Region Team will be in

touch with your Leaders to help coordinate.

This Month’s question for the North West is “Are we all living by the Scout Law and

Promise?” The first step of living by the Law and Promise is to know them “off by

heart”—and not just the Youth Members! I need the Leaders, Adult Supporters and

Adults on the Group Support Committees to be able to recite them if asked. My hope is

for all of the Joeys, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers and Rovers of the North West Region to be

able to recite their Law and Promise if asked. Once we know them we can start to apply

them to our lives and make the world a better place.

Now onto my report.

At the present time the North West Region consists of 299 Youth Members and Adult

Leaders. Whilst this number is below where we started in Feb 2017 (which was 317) we

have been replacing numbers lost throughout the year and I maintain our main threat to

the Region is lack of Adult Volunteers. If there is anyone who knows a person that

would make a good Leader in Scouting now is the time to say “give it a go!”

If every Group in the NW could put on 5 new Leaders then we would certainly be able

to recruit lots of more Youth Members!

The first of three Region events this year in the North West is the "Spirit of the North

West camp", which is being at Lynchwood Scout Camp on the weekend of the 14th

and

15th

April.

It was a fantastic turnout with 110 participants on the Saturday—Archery, Crate Stacking,

Monkey Thingee—where kids climb up a tree, construction, bush rambles setting up

cameras that activate on movement to see what animals go by in the night and puzzle

games have kept everyone busy...

Two parents from 2nd Armidale – Janalle Wilkes & James Turnell and Blinky aka Neil

Bryan from Tamworth Oxley Scout and Craig Landel from Tamworth Hillvue worked

tirelessly to cook for us throughout the day and kept everyone well fed and happy.

Martin Siddons, a wonderful ex Leader, came along and set up a plaque for our dear

friend Kevin “Stack” Haycock right alongside his wife Maureen's plaque for Sunday's

memorial.

Page 3: MAY 2018 - scoutsnorthwest.orgscoutsnorthwest.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/KALORI_May-2018.pdf · This is important and gives us all a chance to ensure that we are just not “winging

A very special thank you and a hardy BRAVO must go to Leigh and Ben Williamson who at

very short notice (a matter of hours not days) travelled from Orange to Tamworth on Friday

night so that we could use their abseiling Qualifications for two of our fun activities!—Bravo the

Williamson's!!

So I am happy to report that Joeys, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers, a Rover, Adult Supporters, Parents

and Leaders from around the North West Region have lived up to their Promise and Law and

have had the most wonderful and happy activity.

Special Thanks to Jannali aka Tarranne Bryan for organising this great event.

The Peel Valley Venturers travelled away to the Annual Dragonskin event on the Easter

weekend and were collected very smelly and tired on the Monday night. All reports relate to

having a lot of sleepless fun and catching up with friends made at last year’s Lones weeklong

camp.

The next event on the calendar is Anzac Day and hopefully all Groups will have a presence in

their local Marches. It is very important for our Youth Members to be seen in public doing their

service for those that have done theirs.

This term will see lots of visits to our Scout Groups. I will be looking for everyone to be

following their Scout Law and Promise, Good fun and active programs and the implementation

of the “Adventure Begins” pack which has been provided by NSW Scouts. As mentioned last

month, the feedback from State is that it is being well received but the sections that have their

Unit/Troop/Pack councils working as they should be and are finding it much more relevant and

useful. Our goal should always be that we all want our Youth Members to developing leadership

skills, increase teamwork and have fun and participate in exciting activities and events.

I would again ask for all Group Leaders to ensure that their section programmes are sent to the

Youth Programs coordinator “Jannali”. This is important and gives us all a chance to ensure that

we are just not “winging it”. Let’s get our sections progress mapped out. This also helps out

when outside Leaders or Rovers might be able to lend a hand. Tarranne is keen to help

wherever she can so please provide your program ASAP.

I know that if your Group is running a Fun and Active program it will increase your Youth

Membership.

The State deadline for all families of the Groups to be using the care monkey system was the

31st

of March and I wanted to have 100% of families of the North West Region to be registered

onto this system or accounted for. If you haven’t registered and are receiving emails then do so.

If you haven’t received these emails then contact your Group Leader ASAP. If you have

reservations about using the system then please contact your Group Leader and have a chat

about your concerns.

I am still on the lookout for volunteers for the roles of the New England District Commissioner

and Central Northern District Commissioner. I will not fill this critical role with just any warm

body—the job description of a District Commissioner is a “Champion of Scouting” role, the

suitable person should be a problem solver and an excellent communicator. If you have

someone who might be able to fill those roles then please contact the North West Region office.

Once again I would alert you all that my tolerance for breaches of the Scout Law and Promise

and the Code of Conduct and Ethics is dwindling. Poor behaviour by some of our Youth

Members, Leaders and Adult Helpers all lead to negative experiences for our members and the

members of the Public that we deal with.

I will close my report with a call for all Section Leaders to reinforce the Scout Law and Promise

with their Youth Members at the beginning of their section meeting, just after flag parade.

Furthermore, I am asking all Parent Committees to go over the Code of Conduct and Ethics at

the start of their meetings—I look to the Group Leaders to enforce this direction.

I am very proud of your efforts and thank you all for your efforts and wish you “Good

Scouting!”

Regards as always,

Brett ’Bear’ Grimmond

Region Commissioner NW

MEMORIAL

It was a beautiful and sunny day at

the Spirt of the North West camp;

perfect for Scouts Own and the

memorial of Kevin ‘Stack’

Haycock, long time dedicated

member of the Scouting movement.

A service was held in the chapel

and a plaque will now remain there

to honour all he did.

Please remember that scouting rules will apply - eg Joey youth members must be accompanied by an Adult and Full Uniform (beige pants) is to be worn with Hat. ACTIVITIES: 10am - start the wide game at the fore front - we will a ramble through the Moree CBD area for the patrols and sixes and mob - then we need activities at the park opposite for all sections - construction, fox hunt, egg and spoon race etc - lots of fun, banners and flags. We would like help from around the Region, can we muster to support Moree?

1pm - sausages sizzle lunch with Region Annual Report Presentation - which should take up to an hour and then close.

LUNCH/ ARP: A BBQ Sausage Sizzle will be provided. Whilst the sausages will be gluten free we suggest anyone with special dietary requirements may wish to self-cater for the day. While lunch is going on we will conduct the Annual Report Presentation After lunch activities can be left to the individual groups - some might like to camp overnight at a property thanks to local leaders Eric and Lila’s for a bonfire night. Some may want to go to the artesian baths for a dip in some warm water and some may wish to go home.

We are looking at some other Adventurous Activities, but need to be organised.

More Details will be sent out to Groups asap.
