Understanding and Managing Laminitis in Horses and PoniesLaminitis means ‘inflammation of the laminae’. The laminae is a thin layer of tissue that supports the pedal bone and attaches it to the hoof wall. It also carries blood to all the other components of the hoof. During a laminitic attack, the blood supply to the hoof is disrupted which will result in a decreased delivery of oxygen and nutrients needed to support hoof health. This can be a very painful process for the horse and in severe cases will cause the pedal bone to rotate or drop.

A horse or pony suffering from laminitis may show signs of lameness or demonstrate an unwillingness to move forward. There may be an excessive amount of heat in their hooves and an increased pulse felt at the back of the pastern in the digital arteries. A classic sign of laminitis is the animal bearing more weight in the heels or front hooves than deemed normal, and shifting their weight frequently to relieve pain or, if all four hooves are affected, they might lie down for excessive periods of time.

Laminitis can be a debilitating condition for horses and ponies, and although it can

be triggered for several reasons at any point during the year, equines are more susceptible to it during the spring and summer months, when the grass grows and the sugar levels, fructans, are at their highest. Correct nutrition and management is therefore paramount to maintain the health and wellbeing of the animal, with native horses and ponies, and good-doers being at higher risk.

AGRICULTURE

Scald

Scald can cause severe temporary lameness which interferes with grazing. Prompt treatment ensures that there is no impact on growth rate but delayed treatment can cause failure to gain weight or even weight loss.

Individual cases of scald can be treated topically using oxytetracycline aerosol sprays. When several animals are affected, treating all sheep in the group in a 10% zinc sulphate solution or 3% formalin in a footbath usually provides effective control. After footbathing, sheep must stand in a dry area so that the feet can dry. It is usually necessary to repeat the foot bathing at weekly or two weekly intervals throughout the risk period.

Blowfly

Blowfly is the main external parasite affecting sheep anytime between April and October but is more likely to occur in warmer, humid weather. Flies are attracted to sheep by the odours of excessive “sweating” and urine and/or faeces contamination. Fly strike can occur anywhere over the loins, shoulders, flanks, neck, back, throat, bottom or abdomen. If left untreated, fly strike can be fatal.

Indications of a fly strike include foot stamping, vigorous shaking, gnawing or rubbing of the tail and bottom. There is a distinctive smell and the wool becomes matted and discoloured.

Prevention

Routine crutching and dagging will reduce the risk of strike if started in April and repeated every four to six weeks.

Complete shearing can temporarily reduce the risk of strike, but this risk rapidly increases as the fleece grows. Ewes can become flyblown even after shearing.

Prevention is the best form of control. Strike can be prevented using pour-ons containing the insect growth regulators CLiK® and CLiKZiN®. However these products will not treat existing strike (maggots). Crovect Pour On will prevent strike and also kill maggots.

Contract Farming Agreements have remained a popular vehicle for owners of arable land to manage that land. They are similarly popular with farmers, but why?

In such an arrangement the landowner, confusingly known as the “Farmer” enters into a contract with a farmer, confusingly known as the “Contractor” whose services are engaged in order to cultivate the land and to generate a profit. The business identities and trading positions for tax and VAT purposes of both parties are retained under this arrangement.

Benefits are found on both sides of these arrangements, but an in-depth understanding of the permitted requirements is key to a long-term, successful and legally compliant relationship.

A written contract sets out the duties of the farmer and contractor, including how income and expenditure are to be shared. However, there are several key factors which ensure the Contract does not inadvertently lead to a loss of valuable agricultural tax reliefs for the “Farmer”. These include the following; the farmer must take ultimate responsibility for the cropping and bear the entire financial risk of the growing crop. The only guaranteed income is that paid to the Contractor, with any surplus after the costs of production usually being split between the Farmer and the Contractor at an agreed ratio. The Farmer must pay for the direct inputs, such as seed, fertiliser and sprays; usually through a separate bank account into which all income is paid. In terms of generating an income, the Contractor receives a fixed, guaranteed payment from the Farm Account called the Contractor’s Charge, paid at pre-agreed intervals. The Contractor’s Charge typically covers the Contractor’s fixed costs on their equipment, however, might include an element of profit as well. Once the crops are sold and all costs accounted for, the net margin is split between the two parties at the percentage set in the Contract Farming Agreement (CFA). Typically, however, there will be a Prior Charge which is paid to the Farmer. Thereafter, the agreement between the parties defines how any residual profit is split.

A successful arrangement is one where the key rights and responsibilities are agreed from the outset; together with a mutual understanding of the statutory terms with which they must comply – for example taxation arrangements.

Why are CFAs increasing in popularity? The benefits of flexibility and time management are clear. Other advantages mean that the Farmer avoids a tenancy or complex partnership. They also retain occupation of the farm and benefit from the ability to claim grants, whilst retaining management control. If exercised correctly, tax reliefs may also be available to the Farmer. Finally, should the Contractor operate over a large acreage, the Farmer will also benefit from economies of scale which the Farmer could not achieve, and therefore allow them to farm the land in-hand whilst retaining an element of profitability.

Handlebards travelling players are again visiting Cottesbrooke and will be performing Shakespeare’s

‘Twelfth Night’ in the gardens at Cottesbrooke Hall on Saturday, 7th July.

Gates will open at 5.00pm for picnics to be set up and for the gardens to be enjoyed, which will be opened

for the evening. The show begins at 7.00pm until approximately 9.00pm.
