One Last Reminder: EQAO Administration

Administrator’s Message Though it took its time in getting here, it looks like Spring may actually be arriving! It’s true that this past month has been wet and chilly, but that didn’t dampen our enthusiasm at all! In April we held Crazy Hair Day, had an au-thor visit from Michael Wade, learned about protecting animals from the Earth Rangers, hosted a Family DrumFIT evening, held our Spring Book Fair and began our annual Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

With May at hand, we’re kicking off a number of amazing initiatives, as well, including our Talent Show and a Wel-come to Kindergarten Evening for new registrants. We also will participate in Mental Health Week activities, aimed at supporting well-being and good mental health for all, and reducing stigma associated with mental health. In Ontario, it is estimated that 1 in every 5 children and youth have some type of mental health difficulty —

although 5 out of 5 student have mental health. As a school, we em-phasize that we all have mental health and that we need to extinguish the stigma associated with mental illness. For more on this initiative, visit www.mentalhealthweek.ca.

One of the most exciting things we are looking forward to, to close out the school year, is our School Coun-cil running a fantastic Fun Fair for the community. Our School Council has been collaborating and planning around this event since the Fall and it will be a great evening (and it’s free!) We ask that everyone reserve Wednesday June 12th in their calen-dars —we very much hope to see everyone from our community there!

With two months of schools remain-ing, we are now approaching the ‘home stretch’ of the school year, and are excited by what’s ahead.

Summer Institute Program Looking for summer learning and fun activities for students entering Senior Kinder-garten to Grade 8? Summer Institute offers academic, recreational and athletic programs and activities with intentional links to the Ontario Curriculum. The pro-gram runs for six weeks during July and August. It is offered at 11 school sites across York Region.

For more information on dates, programs and locations, please visit YRDSB’s Summer Institute Page (http://www.yrdsb.ca/Programs/summer/si/Pages/default.aspx). Families can register online, as well as in person or by mail. Registration is now open.

Our school is well underway in planning for 2019 - 2020. In some respects, the work we do now in the

offices is especially important, because our accuracy with anticipated enrollment helps us better plan,

and optimistically, minimizes the need to move students across classes (’reorganize’) in September.

We’ve been especially fortunate over the past year not to have had to reorganize classes, though it is

important to recognize this is always a possibility in any given year, especially as enrollments decline

overall in the community.

We would ask our community for its help in this work. If you know

you will be moving out of the area in the months ahead, please let

the office know as soon as possible, to help us be accurate with our

enrollment estimates. Similarly, if you have a child who will be joining

us at the school for the first time in junior kindergarten and have yet

to register, we would ask you to do so at your earliest convenience.

And if you meet someone moving into the community, encourage

them to register sooner rather than later! Thank you for your support

with our school planning.

Don’t Forget to Let Us Know!

Mathematics is highly visual. Using visual representations will help enhance your child’s understand-ing of quantity, build fluency and flexibility with numbers and support the development of both spatial and algebraic reasoning. Mathematical models can help support your child to think about numbers visually - improving both their understanding of quantity, promoting automaticity and flexibility with numbers.

You can find many helpful links, including 6 Ways to Support Your Child’s Mathematical Develop-ment, an extensive archive of math tasks to try, and even a section on math-related Apps and Games, where you can support math learning through gamification and play. Let’s make math fun!

Bussing Eligibility

Did you know that students’ bussing eligibility changes throughout their school career?

Your child’s eligibility to ride the school bus may change according to their grade and distance from home to school. Below are the provisions for eligibility identified in the School Board’s Transportation Policy #680:

All YRDSB students in Grades JK-3 who live within 1.2 km of their school are not eligible for transporta-tion

All YRDSB students in Grades 4-8 who live within 1.6 km of their school are not eligible for transportation

All YRDSB students in Grades 9-12 who live within a transit served area are not eligible for transportation.

To view Board Policy #680 Student Transportation, please visit www.yrdsb.edu.on.ca. For more infor-mation about bus transportation and to determine your son/daughter’s eligibility please visit www.schoolbuscity.com.

Monthly Wellness Tip

The Spring had Finally Arrived, so ...

School Organization Determining preliminary class placements for September began during the month of April and continue well into June before being finalized. Having worked with your child throughout the year, your child’s teacher has developed a good understanding of his or her strengths and areas for growth. In consulta-tion with grade team partners, appropriate support staff and administration, we are beginning to put together classes for next year, considering many criteria, among them providing for gender balance, a range of academic abilities, and ensuring there are good learning partners for all students. Social dy-namics are considered, as well, though the central concern is developing classes that provide for an effective learning environment. To this end, we do not accept requests for particular teachers or for students to be placed with certain groups of friends. As you can appreciate in a smaller school such as ours, creating balanced classes is a significant task when there are usually no more than two placement options, and is done with care. Teaching assignments and our school organization for next year have yet to be final-ized, and will be subject to ongoing revisions over the summer and potentially even in September, given the prospect of unanticipated changes in student enrolment and Ministry mandates and policies around school mod-els and class sizes.
