From the Desk of the NAASC President

Greetings!

I hope everyone celebrated Founders Day. I certainly enjoyed the day and all events leading to that

special day, including Day of Service, which I spent at the Atlanta Food Bank and the “Say Yes to the

White Dress,” event founded by NAASC Membership Chair, the History & Traditions Convocation,

featuring Angela Baskerville, C’87, Vice President, Technology Development, AT&T Communications,

the Alumnae-Student Lunch with Robyn Young and the Founders Day Sunday Worship Service with a

sermon by Rev. Porsha Williams, C’2012. Kudos to the College for honoring Rachel Strickland Cook,

C’68 as the Founders Spirit Award winner, Dr. Virginia Davis Floyd, C’73 as the Hall of Fame Award

recipient and Naima Porter Sparks as the True Blue awardee.

Founders Week was, however, not without bad news: Dr. Donald

M. Stewart, Sixth President of Spelman College, passed away.

Those of us that attended and/or graduated during the years of

his service, had the opportunity of know a groundbreaker who

helped increase the College endowment from $9 million to $41

million, established the Computer Science major and minor,

launched the Chemistry Department, the Ethel Waddell Githii

Honors Program, Comprehensive Writing Program, as well as the

first Women's Research and Resources Center at a Historically

Black College & University.

Dr. Stewart was an amazing man with a great personality and big

heart. Upon his retirement, NAASC’s admiration for all that he

accomplished led to the establishment of the Donald & Isabel

Stewart Endowed Student Scholarship. Let all Spelman alumnae remember and appreciate his

undaunted leadership and send prayers to his wife, Mrs. Isabel Stewart and family!

Lastly, I look forward to seeing reunioners of classes ending in ‘4 and ‘9! Please plan to attend the

NAASC Annual Meeting and Luncheon on Saturday, May 18, 2019, at 11:30 am (see call to meeting

below). We have much to accomplish during the meeting, including voting on proposed

Constitution/Bylaws amendments, committee reports, installation of officers, and more! The cost is $38,

and payment may be made via our website at www.naasc.org or by mail at NAASC, PO Box 42828,

Atlanta GA 30311.
