GETTING TO KNOW YOU by Doris Hoover April showers bring MAY flowers.
MAY represents the birth flower, Lily of the Valley MAY represents the birth gem, Emerald
MAY is Health Awareness Month MAY Day represents festivals and fun
May also introduces you to Ted and Jackie LaFerriere, this month’s “Getting to Know You” commentary. Jacqueline Ann LaFerriere (Jackie) was born in Hoboken, NJ on June 19, 1948, to John and Beatrice Johnsen. (Norwegian name) She was baby number seven with two brothers and four sisters. Her Mother also worked in a “Tootsie Roll” factory and her Dad was a Boiler Maker, a trained tradesperson who produced steel fabrications. Jackie was twelve years old when her Mother passed away from cancer. She received her elementary education in the Hackensack, NJ school district; graduating from Haverstraw High School, Stony Point NJ. She was a hospital volunteer Candy Striper while attending the Haverstraw Jr. High. Her first employment was working in an electronics factory as a soldering technician. For ten years, Jackie was a Social Worker for the Rockland County NY, Dept. of Social Services carrying out Medicaid Examiner responsibilities. Jackie and her first husband had a son, Richard Adam. Richard works for the Brooklyn Technical School, Information Technology Dept. Today, Jackie on occasion and when needed is a “Dog Sitter” or a caretaker for animals. This is her passion; she loves the challenge. Jackie’s favorites are: the color maroon, enjoying a seafood dinner at “The Red Lobster”, suspense movies, and watching “Investigation Discoveries” on the ID channel. Jackie is a member of the Frederica Freedom Baptist Church, singing in the church choir and also cooking for special church events. “Amazing Grace” is her favorite song. The most enjoyable vacation she ever had was her honeymoon to “Disney World.” She enjoys sewing, playing cards with Ted, and singing with the player piano songs. “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you” are her words of ad-vice. She is a five year FSC member, was an active member of the “Johnnie Cake Singers,” an outstanding FSC Card Club pinochle player, and Game Night participant. Jackie has an extraordinary communicating skill of getting a smile on the face of her friends. She is a happy person with happy thoughts. Jackie met the love of her life at FSC during the month of May 2012, engaged at FSC, and married April 27, 2014, at the Freedom Baptist Church. Theodore Isaias LaFerriere, Jr. (Ted) was born September 20, 1946, in Cheverly, MD. His father was employed as a Civil Service employee for the US Air Force, operating heavy equipment machinery. Ted’s mother, Mary Edna was a stay-at-home caring for home and three children. Ted has two sisters. Ted is the middle child. Hillcrest Heights MD school is where he received his elementary education, graduating from Suitland High School, and continuing on to the U of MD, Georgetown University, and NC State University. During his early years (age 12 through 18) he was a professional musician playing the guitar and drums in a local band. Ted served our country for 25 years in the US Army and Reserves retiring in 1980 with the rank of Major. Ted first wife is deceased. He has four children, six grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Then…he met Jackie and a joyful life con-tinued. Ted’s favorites are: the color maroon, pork chop dinner, The “Golden Corral” and/or “Magnolia Restaurant” for a Prime Rib dinner, John Wayne movies, a cruising ship to anywhere, and the action packed movie “White House Down” about terrorists taking over Washington DC. He is an ardent fan of the Red Skins, enjoys music, and an exciting game of cards at home with Jackie. Ted is a cheerful man, always has a hello and a smile, a steadfast member of FSC, where he served on the FSC Board of Directors. He enjoys his time spent at the Center playing cards and participating in activities. Ted is a member, Congregation Leader, and sings in the choir at the Freedom Baptist Church. His advice “Believe in God”. Can’t ask for anything better than that. Please welcome Ted and Jackie with your friendly smiles.
