PRESIDENT’S REPORT by George Walsh

The 2019 season is upon us. As I write this on the last day of April, the

temperature is going to hit 80 degrees. Welcome warm weather.

This is the year for continuing to improve communication and getting

feedback from our members. I do hope you had a chance to complete not one,

but two surveys that focused on the current and future aspects of Cripple

Creek. Always remember, you can contact Brian Trout and/or any board

member with comments and suggestions.

I hope you all had a chance to read the email from Pete Fronczek, Greens

Committee Chairman, with a message/request from Glen MacDonald. We all

respect Glen and his crew and get to play a top-notch golf course. That said,

please follow those guidelines and leave the course in better condition than

you found it.

Lastly, the board approved a relaxed dress code in line with the current trend.

Please read it and comply with the code as written. Understand that this

relaxed code will be strictly enforced. I only ask that you and your guests

comply with the code and do not put our staff in an uncomfortable position of

denying play. Our dress code can be found on our website at

www.cripplecreekgolf.com/dress-code

We have a great golf course and the best staff. Enjoy the 2019 season. Every

year gets better.

George F. Walsh

CCWGA 18 HOLE by Cynthia Hunsberger

April was a great month for golf! The course turned from brown to green, the trees

and flowers are blooming, the greens got super fast and everything is covered in the

yellow dust! The 18 Hole group has been enjoying good turnouts, fun formats,

making new friends and enjoying old friendships.

32 Ladies had a lot of fun participating in the Spring Ladies Only Twilight. There was a great mix of ladies

from both groups. The new Modified Scotch Foursome format was well received and all eight teams played in

under two hours! Congratulations to everyone who played and to the winners! There will be another Ladies

Only Twilight in the fall, if you missed this one you surely don't want to miss that one!

A reminder to all lady golfers that the Member Guest is coming up June 14 & 15. It's not too late to sign up,

this is a fun event with two days of golf, a cocktail party, prizes and a delicious luncheon all for only $125 pp.

This year we will also be playing Bingo with some fun prizes on Friday night! You can invite one guest or

three, if you want to play but don't have a guest or have a guest but need another twosome please let the pro

shop or Norma Spicher know and they will try to find someone for you to invite. Don't miss this special event!

GREENS COMMITTEE REPORT by Pete Fronczek

Superintendent Glen MacDonald recently completed spring aeration of tees, greens, and fairways. Whenever

he does spring or fall aeration we always get the question why, when the golf course is in wonderful condition

and the greens are just about perfect, does he punch holes in everything? The answer is aeration is essential to

ensure good turf health throughout the year. It reduces the accumulation of excess thatch and relieves soil

compaction allowing more oxygen to get to the grass plants root system. It also increases water filtration.

Improved access to air and water allow for deeper rooting and turf growth. For grass to grow at the height we

keep our greens and fairways it must have a healthy root system.

The next comment we often get is the holes on the greens are bad enough but why does Glen have to put sand

down on the greens? Top dressing the greens (adding sand) after aeration has a very beneficial affect. It fills

the holes, immediately helping to smooth the putting surface while promoting the horizontal growth of grass

across the holes shortening the healing process. It also replaces organic matter with sand below the surface of

the greens helping with drainage and overall turf health and bringing our greens closer to USGA

specifications.

Glen will use smaller tines for the spring aeration of greens which should also result in quicker healing of the

holes. He will again incorporate dryjecting into the greens aeration process. Dryjecting uses highly pressurized

water to inject many times more topdressing below the surface of the greens further improving water filtration

and providing more air flow to the roots. The bottom line is - when you are playing on healthy fairways and

perfect greens in July and August it has a lot to do with our aeration program.

A few weeks ago Glen and the Greens Committee sent out a few tips on how members could help him keep

the golf course in the excellent condition we have come to expect. For those who may have missed that

message, we are including those tips below.

• Fix your divots in the fairways and on the tee boxes. In the cooler months, either replace the sod or fill the

divot with the mix of sand and bent grass seed found in both the motorized and push carts. If you carry

your bag, ask the outside attendants for a small bottle of the mix. In the hot summer months it is better to

use the mix.

• Always replace your divots in the rough. Don’t use the sand and bent grass mix for rough divots. Our

rough is mostly fescue grass and we prefer not to have bent grass in the rough.

• Fix your divots in the short-game practice area by using the mix found in the box beside the water station.

• Repair your ball marks on the greens. While you are at it, repair an additional one that may have been

missed.

• Don’t leave tees on the ground or pound them into the turf on the tee boxes. Running over tees with our

tee mowers damages the blades, while tees pounded in the ground prevent turf growth. Put broken tees in

the trash containers beside the tee box or throw them in the rough.
