Excelsior Classical Academy Durham

Once again Windmasters’ Hill put on a fantastic demo at the Excelsior Classical Academy in Durham. This

was our 4th year and it just keeps getting better! We had a great crowd, estimates around 300 total for the

day, and the weather was perfect!

Owain, Kiyoko and Manus ran a fantastic archery shoot.

We had a fortune teller!

She amazed all who

came to her tent!!

The kids played in

all sorts of kid

sized armor and

watched the

fighting.

The Chancery did a fantastic job of help-

ing everyone, big and small, work on a

banner for the school.

There was dancing to be seen, heard and enjoyed.

Sundanda Tribe

Charles Fleming

Of course there were friends of all

ages enjoying the company and

fantastic weather of the day:

Philomene dy Lyse, Gwenhwyfar

Weale, Michel Almond de Cham-

pagne, Aric, Vin, Alain de la Ro-

chelle, James of Middle Aston, Karl

Hohn, Rioghnach inghean Ui

Clerigh, Una Gyldir, Fukutaro Yo-

shida, Toshihiro Yoshida, Kiyoko

Yoshida and Christoph Satterfield.

There was the fiber tent! The little guy in this picture with Margaret Cochrane was so special. He asked to be introduced to the “fighter in the samari armour” then proceed-ed to ask for the “purple fighter” and wanted to know all about the shields. He said he loved that part best. He was so quiet but his questions were sincere and I think he won everyone’s heart! Since I know he’s a 1st grader at the school I look forward to seeing him grow!!

There was fighting! Caitrina inghean Fhearghuis did

her best to represent the women. Sir Alain, Lord

Yuri, Lord Alesander, Lord Bevan-Bevan and m’lord

Kalf.

Guild, A&S and group Announcements

What is the Chancery? Perhaps you’ve heard someone talk about it and want to know but

haven’t asked. In short, the Chancery is a group of dedicated scribes and artists of all types—you read

that right, not just scroll makers but artists of all types—who work as a group to make sure that awards

are produced for the fine folks of our Barony and, on occasion, for the Kingdom.

How is this new? I many ways it isn’t but the “new” vibe being brought to the group is looking

“outside the scroll” as an award. This is not to say that every award is diligently researched to avoid a

scroll—not at all. But there are times, once we’ve received all the court reports, that folks on the list

have done a thing or have been doing a thing for awhile and are well known for it and it prompts us

to ask “Wouldn’t it be cool if…” and we look at out group as we talk about the skills sets, talents and

contributions of the person.

The Chancery is encouraging folks of all art styles to participate because an award can be any-

thing and the more personal to the person receiving he award the better. Do you work leather? Do

you do wood work? Are a sculpture? Do you paint silk? Do you knit/tatt/finger loop or other fiber

art? This is a rare time to make things because the recipients truly know the hours and skill put into

each award. I have a friend who says—No I won’t knit that because I don’t love you that much. You

can replace “knit” with just about any skill and immediately understand the sentiment.

Our gatherings are fun and filled with food and conversation. We will soon have a Chancery

Website and hope to use it to help archive awards and keep things up to date in the Barony.

A few things to keep in mind when visiting the Awards Recommendation website:

*Why do you think the person should receive the award—you can be very specific with a gracious

1000 character space. We need to know when the request is made to create it, why did they get it.

We like to let folks know exactly what you did!

*Please make sure you visit the following links

Order of Precendence-http://op.atlantia.sca.org/

Find your name and make sure your awards are listed. If they are not, please email your baronial herald.
