Greetings Neighbors, Thank you all for your adherence to the self-quarantine rules. From what I’m reading as I write this, the physical distancing is helping. Can you imagine how many of us would be sick, if we didn’t follow them? Because of the unknown, we have no clue, at this point, how long our activities will be curtailed. To those snowbirds, who are staying because it’s not safe to travel, we hope you’ll enjoy your extra time here before you head north. Marty Guzowski Editor

Sunshine Report (contact Phyllis Congdon or BOD member with information

352-291-4946)

Hospitalization/illness:

At press time, Gladys Ouimette is home recovering with her husband Dick. It has been delightful to

see them occasionally out and about in the golf cart.

Bereavement (contact Kim Smith 586-536-5075)

With sadness we report the death of Larry DeRamus who lived at Lot #8. He leaves his mother,

Virginia Burrill who lived with him. Because of the current pandemic, Virginia is not having any

services, but will have a memorial service up north later.

We regret the passing of Dorothy Lawrence from Lot #257. She was a long-time resident who will

be missed by friends and family.

Sadly, we report the passing of Clara Terreault who lived at Lot #370. She leaves her beloved

husband, John and their family, both local and in Massachusetts. Any services will be up north at a

later time.

Blood Drive

David Carson reports there will not be another blood drive until further notice.

However, if you are a regular donor, the country is in need of blood. Check with OneBlood for a

bloodmobile nearby.

Warning

Sadly, at a time when so many people are showing kindness and helping each other, there are people out to

prey on citizens. The IRS is particularly warning people to be on the lookout for calls about the economic

impact statements; they will not call, text, email or contact people via social media asking for personal or bank

account information.

Some vision loss can be expected with age. However, there are some healthy practices that can help protect your vision, i.e. having routine eye exams, paying attention to eye irregularities and eating the right foods. You grew up hearing that eating carrots was good for your eyes; however, there are many good eye healthy foods from which to choose.

Try blueberries, cantaloupe, cucumbers, eggplant, grapefruit, guava, mangoes, oranges, papaya, peaches, squash, tangerines & watermelon. Then there are bell peppers, cabbage, carrots, celery, mushrooms, potatoes, radishes, snapbeans, sweet corn, peanuts, and tomatoes.

For eye-healthy eating, focus on the foods orange in color (oranges, cantaloupe, sweet potatoes) and rich in nutrients (vitamins A,C & E), omega-3, zinc

Finally, the same diet that helps your heart and the rest of your body also helps your eyes. So, eating a diet low in fat and rich in fruits, veggies and whole grains can help not only your heart, but also your eyes. AND, don’t forget the importance of drinking water! So, in honor of healthy vision month, schedule that long awaited eye exam and keep eating the foods that do your eyes some good.

I am not a doctor or registered dietician. The information in this article is based on credible studies and research and any recommendations made about nutrition, supplements, or lifestyle should be discussed between you and your health care provider. This information is not a prescription or replacement for medical care. Ref: American Academy of Ophthalmology – Year of the Eye, 2020, Celia Vimont; allabooutvision, com; Eat These for Healthier Eyes, Redbook 9/17; The Eyes Have It. Healthy You, AARP magazine, Feb/Mar 2020; Which Foods Are Best for My Vision?, Spry Living, March 2020

Recipes Swiss Chard – Rich in antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin, this helps combat macular degeneration – an eye disease that causes central vision loss. Make a pesto. In a food processor, puree 1 cup steamed swiss chard with 1/3 cup walnuts, ½ cup parmesan cheese, 2 cloves garlic, ½ cup olive oil and lemon juice. Toss with pasta or spread on sandwiches. Pork – high in zinc, good for seeing in the dark Rub l lb pork tenderloin with 2 Tbsp Dijon mustard, 2 Tbsp honey, 1 Tbsp olive oil & 1 Tbsp fresh thyme. Roast at 400 degrees until pork reaches an internal temperature of 150 degrees. Sweet Potato – good Vitamin A, good for itchy, dry eyes To make fiber-rich pancakes, mix the flesh from 1 baked sweet potato with 2 beaten eggs and ¼ tsp. ground cinnamon. Cool batter in a skillet with 2 tsp. coconut oil until golden. Top with low-fat Greek yogurt. Sunflower Seeds – May help with counteracting the risk of cataracts due to exposure to the sun’s UV rays. ¼ of sunflower seeds has 62% of daily dose of Vitamin E. Try this instead of your granola bar. Combine 1 cup rolled oats, ½ cup ground flaxseeds, ½ almond butter, 1/3 cup sunflower seeds, ½ cup dried cranberries and ¼ cup honey. Roll mixture into golf-size balls and refrigerate until firm, about an hour.

During this period of quarantine, residents have done a variety of things to keep

themselves busy. Hopefully we will have the best organized drawers and closets, most
