Having work done on your House?

All Homeowners who are having work done on their homes, please tell your contractors

to park all of their vehicles on one side of the street. Parking vehicles on both sides of the

street does not allow emergency vehicles to get to their emergencies in a quick fashion.

Please help to keep the Knoll Safe.

President’s CornerWell, June is here and we're finally getting some warm weather. We're

moving ahead with some re-opening plans, including the pool, although we cannot say with certainty whether these plans will materialize. We need to receive the final word from the Governor of New Jersey. We've heard some of your complaints, and I have to say that personally, I agree with most of you. If I had my way, I would do things a little differently. But it's not up to me or the Board of Trustees. It's out of our hands. We realize how disappointing and frustrating it is to be unable to use our facilities to the fullest; but this too shall pass.

I want to thank everyone for their cooperation and patience. I know there were many who deserve personal thanks for reaching out to others by running errands, shopping, cooking ,etc. Some wonderful ladies sewed and distributed face masks. What a marvelous thing it is when a community pulls together to help their neighbors!

There are a few members of our community who contracted this virus. We wish them all a speedy recovery.

Please tune into channels 1970 and 1971 for the latest updates. When the restrictions begin to relax you will be receiving a call from our Manager, Mary D'ime. A reminder: Our Administrative Office is still open every day, as business still needs to be conducted. It is NOT open to walk-ins by residents. You can still leave correspondence and requests in the mailbox outside the office. You can also call the office with questions. Please don't call Board members at home. You can leave pool passes in the mailbox for up-to-date stickers. They will then be delivered to your home. ACC is still approving work permits. Again, use the mailbox.

The Board of Trustees wishes you all a healthy summer. I've got my fingers crossed, I'm hoping very, very, very, very, much to see you all at the pool at some point this summer!!!

Gail Noonan. President, Board of Trustees

Manager’s Memo

As I’m writing this, we’re waiting to see what the new governmental guidelines taking us on the road to our “NEW NORMAL” will be. We still don’t know when the pool will open for the season. Being the eternal optimists we are, we’re ready to go anyway and have removed some of the pool furniture to allow for social distancing. We will start with thirty (30) lounge chairs and fifteen (15) tables with two (2) seats each. Due to the limited number of people that will be allowed in at one time, and to accommodate our residents, this will mean that guests will not be allowed. Unfortunately, this includes grandchildren. To allow time for a thorough mid-day cleaning, the pool hours will also have to be modified – 10 AM to 2 PM and then 4 PM to 8 PM. These changes would only be to start and it’s hoped that these measures may be eased some time during the season.

We’re also getting ready to re-open the outdoor RECREATIONAL AREAS and will provide a sanitizing station and protective gloves so that everyone who wishes to may use the facilities with confidence.

The ASSOCIATION OFFICE is preparing to re-open on a limited basis while keeping social distancing guidelines in mind. This means that only one person at a time will be able to enter the immediate office area and the waiting area will be distance marked. In the meantime, you can call for help or to ask questions Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 4 PM and use the yellow mailbox outside of Timberland Hall for correspondence that needs to go to the Association.

I hope I didn’t SCARE YOU off when I described in last month’s issue what being a Board member can be like. While it’s true that it is definitely not for everyone, it is extremely rewarding to be able to step back and know you were a part of keeping Leisure Knoll the best community around. Come on…step up and don’t miss the June 12th deadline for submitting your paperwork. Look inside this issue of the Knoll News for more info.

I’m told there has been an alarming increase in the number of folks who don’t call for help when they are in trouble due to fears of going to the hospital during this pandemic. Our FRONT LINE HEROES want me to remind you to call if you are in medical need and that they are fully prepared to take care of you properly and with all the appropriate safety protocols.

We’ll send out Robo-Calls, post notices on the Community Channel 1970 and update the website as the situation evolves and we all try to ADAPT as best we can.

STAY SAFE.

Provided by: JGS Insurance Be Safe Cooking at home can be fun, challenging and delicious! However, accidents often result from flare-ups during food preparation or as a result of oven, burner or electrical and gas connection defects. To keep injuries out of the kitchen when you prepare meals, remember these fire prevention and safety techniques.

Use these fire prevention techniques when you are cooking:

Wear tight-fitting clothing that cannot drape over flames or into pans.

If you have long hair, tie it back.

Do not place oven mitts, hand towels or hot pads on or near the range.

When you are done cooking a meal, double-check to make sure that all appliances are turned off.

Unplug portable appliances when they are not in use.

When cooking on your range, turn on the vent hood fan to minimize any smoking.

If your gas range does not light on its own, be extremely careful when lighting it.

If The Event Of A Fire:

Turn off the gas or electrical appliance that is fueling the flames, if possible.

If the fire is in a pan on your range, cover the pan with its lid or a baking sheet. If this does not work, use a fire extinguisher or sprinkle baking soda on the pan.

If you are cooking with oil and it catches fire, DO NOT pour water on the flaming pan. This will make the fire worse.

WELCOMENEWCOMERS

From the Editor

Greetings from Cathie and Gabe:

On the bright side, the weather is improving, the sun is shining and less rain. People are walking and neighbors are out-and-about.

Although all club activities are on hold, some have elected to hold regular meetings via ZOOM. Great idea!In preparing for this edition of the Knoll News, your editors decided that this edition is going to be a “happy” read.

We have been bombarded whenever we turn on our TVs or go online. We need a change. We have also added a special “Thank You” page in this edition. This page will reflect heartfelt appreciation and gratitude from neighbors helping neighbors during this unprecedented time.

Many of us turn to social media for information about our community. Most of the postings are rumor, speculation and inuendo.

Any information about our community will come directly from either the Board of Trustees or the Association office.Again, we thank you for your comments and observations. Keep those articles coming!

Cathie and Gabe

I interviewed Judy Manfra for this month’s Newcomers Column. Judy moved to Lambeth Lane from Howell last June. She loves Leisure Knoll. Having been here a year, Judy has had a chance to go to our dances and participate in our exercise classes.

Judy has two children, Melinda and Joseph and a grandson, Jack, who lives in Colts Neck. She also has a dog, whom she rescued. She has had other rescued dogs in the past. Judy has a good heart.

We welcome her to our community.

AMERICAN

IRISH CLUB

Leisure Knoll Community Angels

Leisure Knoll Community Angels

The LK Community Angels have been busy this summer as we move forward. We had a wonderful indoor picnic on June 22 which was well attended by many of our residents, some bringing their home health aide with them. Hot dogs and burgers were cooked outside, salads were plentiful on the tables and for dessert, what else goes better with a picnic than Dixie Cups!

The LK Community Angels were so fortunate to host our first post-Thanksgiving Dinner last year thanks to the donations of many of our clubs. But we are aware as a club that it is important that we can sustain ourselves. We had our first fundraiser barbecue on July 21st which was extremely well attended, and we thank the Veteran’s Club for their kick-off donation. Although scheduled for July 14th, it was way too hot for chefs, servers and customers!!! By this time, we will have also hosted our August 18th fundraiser barbecue. In addition, our first Sip and Paint fundraiser will be held on September 13th and our post-Thanksgiving dinner will be held on December 1st. We are certainly moving forward!

For those who ask what the Angels do, as was stated in the June edition of the LK News, we are trying to address senior isolation and make our residents aware of the many resources that are available locally to them. At our first post-Thanksgiving dinner, many of our guests who are alone, met others and have developed friendships. For some who never have the opportunity to get out or have no family or no family locally, it was wonderful to see everyone enjoy themselves and others. Rob Keeley provided entertainment and a sing-along at this first dinner we hosted. We are also looking at events that we can host throughout the year.

Can we solve the problem of senior isolation in Leisure Knoll? Of course, not but we are hoping that folks that live here might offer names to us of friends and neighbors that are alone, of course with their ok. Privacy issues are always prevalent. Last year in order to get many of our invitations to our post-Thanksgiving dinner, we brought invitations to the Office of Senior Services, Caregivers and Meals on Wheels and asked them to give to the clients they serve, and they could then RSVP to us.

We have so many people interested in helping out with the Angels or being part of our group and what a great thing for this wonderful community. Anyone interested, please call Leslie Terjesen at 732-408-5726.

Stay tuned to more events and looking forward to seeing all of our paintings that we do at our Sip and Paint!!!

We hope that our Leisure Knoll community is staying happy and healthy during the lockdown. If we are able to gather this month, our meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 2, for our Ice Cream Social. Please refer to

Comcast Channel 1971 for further information. There will be no meetings in July and August.

One of the highlights of my trip to Ireland was having the honor to view the Book of Kells at Trinity College Library in Dublin. The Book of Kells is an illuminated manuscript Gospel book written in Latin containing the four gospels of the New Testament. It is believed to be created in c800 AD in a Columbian monastery in either or both Ireland and Britain. It is possible the Book of Kells was written in honor of St. Columba, an Irish Abbott and Evangelist. The Book of Kells is a masterwork of Western calligraphy and Insular illumination, a metalwork with interlaced art. Experts feel the illustrations and ornamentation of the Book of Kells surpass other insular Gospel books in extravagance and complexity. The decorations combine traditional Christian iconography, ornate swirling motifs together with Celtic knots and interlacing patterns in vibrant colors. It was kept for many years at the Abbey of Kells in Ireland thereby getting its name. It is widely regarded as Ireland’s National Treasure. It is kept at the Trinity Library in a special temperature room under glass cases with limited people allowed in through guard operated doors. You can view the Book of Kells online, www.digitalcollections.tcd.ie.

At our next meeting, (whenever that is), we will discuss Once We Were Brothers, so hang on to your book. Tom Gill will be our leader.

Pat Williams

As we move into the warm summer months, the Leisure Knoll Angels hope

this finds you happy and healthy although probably a bit bored. But as the days become longer and warmer, always a wonder seeing what’s going to pop up through the ground each day. These past few weekends, with warmer weather, have seen many out planting their summer assortment of flowers and we hope you get the opportunity to get out and enjoy viewing these.

We are hoping our annual Thanksgiving dinner will take place. We, of course, will follow all guidelines in having this important dinner. If you are new to Leisure Knoll, the Leisure Knoll Angels host a Thanksgiving dinner for those who are alone, people who are shut-in (we provide transportation), etc.

We host this dinner in the PAC at Timberland Hall which is a team effort by many, from shopping for the dinner, writing invitations, transporting people, COOKING the dinner, providing entertainment, whatever needs to be done to enjoy this.

We certainly hope that this can happen in November but stay tuned…………………………….

Stay safe, stay well, Leisure Knoll Angels

On June 10th at 1:30 in the PAC we are being optimistic that we will be able to hold our meeting. During that time, we will be resuming our Sister Wendy videos and the topic will be on the Reformation. A recap of what we discussed in November will be the purpose of this article to bring us

all up to PAR. (we did not meet in December and January was our Holiday luncheon. February, we did not have a meeting as was the case in March due to a museum trip cancellation.) In November, we viewed the Sister Wendy video “Two Sides of the Alps” when in 1500 began the religious wars between Catholics and early Protestants. Northern Germany and England were experiencing

violence and intolerance. A group of Protestants called iconoclasts in Germany destroyed religious and church decorations. An artist who found himself caught in this conflict was Hans Holbein who, forced to leave Switzerland and Germany for England was catapulted into yet another religious war. Henry VIII’s wife Catherine of Aragon gave birth to a girl and Henry wanted a son as heir to his throne. Divorcing her and in his search for a new wife he commissioned Holbein to paint portraits of possible candidates. The most famous portrait Holbein completed was of Henry VIII himself, which was not a very flattering one.

At this time in Southern Italy the Republic of Venice existed which amidst of all the strife was peaceful and prosperous. Because of their trade with the East, Venetian art contains the oils of the west with the mysteries of the Orient. A famous artist of this region was Titian. He was so successful; it became a status symbol to own one of his paintings. Often his paintings encompassed scenes of pagan myths including many Greek Gods. The inquisition was beginning to rear its ugly head and often artists would have to defend themselves with what subject matter was contained in their paintings.

At this time, we usually do not meet in July and August but due to circumstances it remains to be determined as to whether we will hold meetings during these months to recoup lost April and May meetings. Please watch for notices on the community channel and for notice in the Knoll news.

To paint a portrait is to capture the image of a person. Originally done for the rich it now encompasses all segments of society. They can be commissioned by the government, corporations, groups, individuals and clubs or just sentimentally composed by the artist. They can be done in various medias which include etchings, lithography, prints, photography, video and digital media. Over the centuries it took artists of different disciplines to arrive at the definition of what a good portrait consists of. Portrait painting is not an exaggeration of features as that is known as caricature. It remains to the eyes and eyebrows to convey emotions when a smile is neutral. A portraitist will look for the essence of personality in their subjects. Posture and costume play an important part. Mastering human anatomy is paramount in a portrait’s creation. Human faces are asymmetrical and artists must

pay attention to left right differences. Knowing about muscles and tissues also pays an important part. Portraits can be created in various sizes, as large as a Chuck Close (1940-present) painting for a museum or

small enough to be able to travel easily. Portraits are often designed to match a décor’s style and color where it might make its home. Different artist took different amounts of time to create their paintings. It was known that Cezanne could have the subject sit over 100 times The average time is 4 hours. Sometimes a subject would be able to choose from various poses and sketches which one they’d like completed. Hans Holbein would take a drawing of the face then complete the portrait without the sitter. In the 18th century a portrait would take about a year before being relinquished to its owner. Some famous painters would only complete the head and hands and let the apprentices finish the clothing and backgrounds. Symbols could be used in the background to give a clue to the sitters moral or religious character as well as the subjects job, hobbies, or social status. Some famous artists have had their portraits rejected by the person who had commissioned them. This held true for John Singer Sargent’s “Portrait of Madame X” Certainly Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Come join us in June and Beyond--- Monday’s in the Arts and Crafts Room in Timberland Hall. We help each other, all Medias welcome, WE WANT YOU !! When walking your dog around the block, taking a shortcut

across your neighbor’s lawn, or between two houses, or through backyards is unacceptable. This is not a public thorough fare; it

is trespassing on private property, invading privacy and very inconsiderate. Please walk your dog so you are on the city strip area or in the street. If you need to walk your dog on grass, your own lawn is where

that should be done.

Facebook: Leisure Knoll of Manchester Computer and Technology Club

Let’s be frank. You are tired of being bored. You want excitement; you want to experience the thrill of being young and vibrant. Hey, you know someone at the hospital where you were born made a mistake when recording the year of your birth. You are barely out of your twenties – at least that’s how you feel. You want to mingle with your peers; you want to learn new things. BUT, don’t misunderstand. In no way do you want to throw out big bucks and ruin your health at the same time. Hmm. How can you do all those things and do them from the comfort of your home, while sipping your favorite coffee or something, shall I say, “stronger”? Come join your friends in the Computer and Technology Club. We are now online, you know. Yes, that’s right. No joke. You can be part of the technology in-crowd, just like you were back in high school a few years ago. We now meet regularly using Zoom – the video conferencing computer program. So, come join us – it’s free. What an amazing idea. (I believe one of our lovely female members suggested it, but, guys, let’s hush up about that.) Now, you have no excuse. Yes, you can join us without adorning any special formal wear. (Guys, you won’t even have to shave, unless, of course, you care how you look! Nah.) Your four-legged best friend might even care to put in a brief appearance.

During the past month’s meetings, we’ve discussed such sexy topics as Windows 10 updates, virus and malware checkers, hidden gems on the iPhone and iPad, using your

iPhone as a scanner, security issues concerning video-conferencing programs, new cheaper iPhones. (Hey, you recently got your “stimulus” check. Think of it this way: By buying a new phone, you’re helping the poor folks in Silicon Valley. What a great idea! See, you are always thinking of helping others!) And lots of other topics. No joke.

And don’t forget – by “attending” our meetings you might even be able to show off – discreetly, of course – your beautiful interior decorating skills in the background. (Oh my, you noticed that da Vinci-like painting on the wall behind me. I did it in my “spare” time while preparing a cheese soufflé and working on a new proof for the Poincaré conjecture.) If your computer doesn’t have a video camera, don’t let that be a deterrent. You can still join us, even if we won’t be able to see your ever-smiling face. You can still chat up a storm. Remember, we’re all friends, so don’t be afraid to ask questions and pick a discussant’s brain. Oh, by the way, if you’re not conversant with Zoom or how to get in on our meetings, don’t let that be an obstacle. Just throw an email, phone call, or send a carrier pigeon on over to our own Cathie the co-editor of the Knoll News. She’ll help you out, pronto. I promise she’s not disagreeable like yours truly. So, don’t be shy. Join us. We’d love to see and hear you. We still “meet” on the second, third, and fourth Mondays of the month at 10 a.m.

Feng Shui Colors for House and Front DoorWhat is the most beneficial color in Feng Shui, depends

on the compass direction of your house. To get that direction, stand outside your front door, take a compass reading facing the street. (Your cell phone can do this.) A Feng Shui myth is the idea of the red door is that red (a substitute for the fire element) will always bring good luck, so it must be on the door to bring good luck in from the entrance. WRONG!

North facing houses are houses that can boost the occupants’ career and financial opportunities. The North is a secondary wealth location, and by having a North facing house, you can be sure to see lots of career activity—and more money, too! Because of this it is best to paint your house with “water or metal colors. A perfect example of this is the house that is white with black shutters and front door. Grey siding with blue accents is another beautiful combination. White-Gray-Blues-Black and Purples are most auspicious.

South “fire” houses are best painted in “fire” or “wood” colors. A perfect example of this is the house painted light brown with darker brown trim and a red front door. It’s always fine to paint your trim white in any direction. Greens-browns-red-orange and purple is best.

East facing homes are houses that can boost occupants’

health and family relationships. With this facing direction it is best to paint your house with “water” (blue-black-purples) or “wood” colors (green-brown). A perfect example of is a house painted green with black shutters and a front door or a pale blue house with a deep eggplant color for the front door. Using black-blue-green-purples and browns are suggested.

If your house is west facing, this can help children. If the house is not painted a supporting color, the breadwinner of the house will have a difficult time with his job, his health, or his relationships. So do be sure to paint your house with “earth” (yellow-beige) or “metal” colors (gray-white). A perfect example of this is a gray house with white shutters and front door. Or, a pale yellow house with white trim and a deep eggplant front door. Gray-white-yellow-beige-purple is beneficial.

North-east houses are best painted in “earth” or “fire” colors. A perfect example of this is the house painted light beige with darker beige trim and a red door.

South-east facing directions is best to paint your house with “water” (blue-black-purple) or “wood” colors (green-brown). A perfect example of this is a greenhouse with black shutters and front door, or a pale blue house with white trim and a deep eggplant for the front door. Black-blue-green-purple-brown is most beneficial.

South west houses are best painted “earth” colors or”fire” colors. A perfect example is a house painted light beige with darker beige trim and a red door. Yellow-beige-red-orange-purple colors are best.

North West houses help with the patriarch. A house that faces NW is very important to the family where the father is the breadwinner. That’s because a house that is painted the correct color can help him get ahead in his career by providing people that will help him in advancing his career. If the house isn’t painted a beneficial color, the man of the house will have difficult time with his job, his health and/or his relationships, so do be sure to paint your NW facing house a beneficial color. With this facing direction it is best to paint your house with “earth” (yellow-beige) or “metal” colors (gray-white). A perfect example of this is a house painted gray with white shutters and front door, or a pale yellow house with a white trim and deep eggplant door. Gray-white-yellow-purple- beige is best.

Special note: a great universal color for any direction front door is by Valspar called “Sweet Currant-1001-7A” It supports all compass directions. If by chance your house doesn’t have these beneficial compass colors, a cure is to add the beneficial colors in landscaping and decorations outside of house.

As this is being prepared the first week in May for the June Knoll News, we hope everyone is enjoying the Spring flowers. Our editors have asked us to keep our news positive and delightful and that is what we will endeavor to do.

Our regular meetings have been suspended as of now, just monitor Channel 1971 for updates, as well as our Facebook Page “Fishing Club LK at Manchester”. You must enter the exact words into your internet search engine directly as written. If anyone has any questions about the Club, please contact Trustee Ray Pickwoad by phone at 732-323-0235 or e-mail Sue at [email protected].

The Fishing Club recently had the lake stocked with plenty of bait fish which is food for the larger fish that is in our lake. We have plans to stock our lake sometime in May with Largemouth Bass and Catfish. However, we

were advised that Catfish is unavailable on this order, so we increased the number of bass to stock our lake. We have a newly constructed beautiful gazebo with an attached floating dock now and we hope people fishing off it will help maintain the cleanliness there while using their bait and

insure they remove any garbage. Keep in mind other people may utilize sitting on the benches there so let us keep it clean! As a suggestion, when I cut up bait or use worms in a container, I keep everything within the bag, so the deck does not get filthy over time. In any event, there are newly posted rules in the enclosed bulletin board by the gazebo for both Fishing & Boating which you should follow. We “Thank You” for your help in this matter and we hope you enjoy your day there. Please remember to have your resident or guest badge with you while fishing or boating. You are also required to wear the life preservers provided while boating on our lake. Thank you to the Association and Board members & staff for assisting us in this effort to upgrade the signage around the lake and updating the rules posted, not to mention the newly constructed gazebo and floating dock. Fishing and boating are enjoyable.

On our Facebook page, Doug Zemekis, from the NJ Marine Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources, is still holding seminars (webinars) which you can participate through the internet. As soon as a program is announced, VP Sue Resch posts it on our Facebook site. She mentioned to me that she may share the announcement with those that have e-mail and may wish to join in.

The following are some “Angling Lore” to make you Smile:

When the boat’s leaving the dock, if a cat begins to purr, fishermen are pleased: It is said that cats love fish and can smell them from afar.

Similarly, when a cat tries to ankle-polish a grizzled fisherman who is seaward bound, his haul will be bountiful.

A black cat on the deck of a ship on its own free will is considered good luck. However, many commercial fishermen claim that a cat carries a gale in its tail or can excite a storm by licking its coat the wrong way.

Superstitious fishermen refer to small ripples on the surface of the ocean as “cat’s paws” while a great Disturbance of the water is called “cat’s skin.”

Lastly, When baiting a hook, you can double down on your luck by reciting this ditty while doing it: Fish, fish, fish, come bite my hook; You’ll be the captain and I’ll be the cook.

On behalf of President Bill Bond and all the Officers and Trustees we wish you all the best. Once we see what develops as we go forward with this situation, the Fishing Club will keep you informed. Thank you for your understanding and God Bless You All!

Stay Safe & Be Well! Ray Pickwoad

Joke of the Month:

A monastery is in financial trouble, so it goes into the fish-and-chips business to raise money. One night a customer knocks on its door. A monk answers. The customer asks, “Are you the fish friar?”

“No,” he replies. “I’m the chip monk.”

June 2020 - The Knoll News 29

There’s an old song that was written back in 1945 by Richard Rogers for the Broadway musical Carousel called “June is Busting Out All Over”. Dated though the tune may be, I think we could all use a dose of corn right now. The song speaks of seeing June in the trees and smelling it in the breeze. Buds are “bustin’ outa bushes” and the feeling is so intense that you can feel it in your heart. After the spring we’ve endured, stuck at home waiting for good news, I sure hope that as you read this, we can finally see sunlight at the end of the tunnel in this beautiful month of June which heralds the season of summer.

During the months of April and May, the Footlighters, thanks to modern technology, have been “Zooming”, coming together online, seeing faces we’ve missed and catching up on club news. We wished Sharyn a special Happy Birthday, helping to boost her morale during a very trying time. And, thanks to Gary, our board has had both video and phone conferences. He and Doug are in touch constantly, trying their best to keep things running as smoothly as possible under the circumstances. Our board is determined to carry on, keeping Paul’s ideas going strong, just the way he would have wanted.

To that end, the board’s meeting at the end of April has addressed issues such as regular meetings at Lakeside Lodge, elections for a new board, as well as the November show. All members will be updated via email (or phone) regarding these matters.

Our Footlighters’ Facebook Page has been active with photos, videos, and brand-new stuff recorded at individuals’ homes to keep us entertained. We are not a shy group! Many thanks to our club’s artists who do their very best to bring a smile to our faces…it is so appreciated! (Also, if any of you have pictures you’d like to post from shows, whether they’re posed or candid, onstage or backstage, working on sets or sound equipment, rehearsals or audience shots, please feel free to post on our page…we never tire of seeing them.)

Once Lakeside Lodge opens again, we will welcome newcomers to stop by, introduce yourselves, and see what we’re all about. If entertaining has been something you’ve always wanted to try, be it out in front or behind the scenes, the Footlighters could be the way to go! Meetings take place at 7:30 on the 4th Wednesday of each month. Call any Footlighter for more information.

To quote from that 1945 ditty: “March went out like a lion, A-whippin’ up the water

in the bay. Then April cried and stepped aside. And along came

pretty little May. May was full of promises, but she didn’t keep ‘em quick

enough for some. And a crowd of Doubtin’ Thomases was predictin’ that

the summer’d never come. Look around, look around. June is bustin’ out all over. The moonlight is shining on the shore.”

One thing I know for sure, WEEDS are the only thing I can find that is not on “shut down! For those of us who are gardening more than ever, who are finding new ways to keep busy around our houses, inside and out, good for us!

I appreciate the opportunity to just stay home! There are good ways and bad ways of pulling out weeds! I’ve found the slower I pull them out the better the chance I have of getting the entire root! I rejoice when the tap comes out and that root says good-bye to my lawn! However, I am convinced as I pull it up from the soil, somehow it mysteriously sounds an alarm to its buddies, to “hurry up and spread your seeds, she’s got me!”

This isn’t about gardening, but my male cate Gunner, a three-year-old Russian Grey with a stubby tail, has ALLOWED me to put a harness on him and fasten it under his belly! I walk him next to me with a leash that’s about an 8” thin, nylon rope. When Gunner was a kitten, I tried several times to take him for a walk, didn’t happen, he wanted to hide under every bush, but now, he’s not afraid and when I say, “come, Gunner” he comes right next to my leg. How about that!

Back to Business, hopefully we’ll hear Charlie and Karen’s NEW video presentation about Monarch Butterflies, the rescue, care and feeding of their VERY TINY EGGS, (found on the underside of Milkweed, Parsley and Dill plants.) A tiny little black caterpillar, which eats whatever plant it is found on. You know Karen and Charlie make their own video’s and my goodness; their videos are the quality of Nat. Geo Wild! YOU TOO can be a Monarch rescuer, it’s almost a free hobby and you can feel so good when the adult butterfly comes out of its chrysalis, and you set it free. You’ll feel so good that a bird or bigger bug didn’t eat the little black caterpillar for lunch! I get so excited because for about five summers I have enjoyed rescuing Monarchs. If you’d like to learn, you could ask Zorine Iesals, Ruth Lederer, me, Karen, or Charlie, on how to get started.

September 8 is our house plant exchange. Many of us are starting now to have something to offer for trading. It’s always fun.

At this writing, on 4/29 I have not heard when we’ll be able to meet in the PAC. Personally, I love watching Olga Crotti’s reaction to how I mess up the “Robert’s Rule’s”. You’d think I could get the “Rules” right after 3 terms! My brain goes to making it FUN, making the meeting enjoyable, make it interesting, make it worth everyone’s while to come out to be with our members so ALL can look forward to coming out the second Tuesday of each month. Our refreshment team and table are something I can’t overlook!

Donna Miranda is rearing to get going again! She will make sure there is a delicious, varied, and appealing and beautiful array of desserts to choose from. By the way, we serve our refreshments at the beginning of each meeting.

May 15th is the “safe” time to plant outside and I, for one, can’t wait to buy my ONE tomato plant!

In the meantime, lots of people are distancing and some wearing masks, taking walks around the lake all day long, when the weather is nice. We have a family of Geese, (I know) but those tiny, yellow little fluff balls prancing between the mom goose and the daddy goose, who by the way will chase you like you wouldn’t believe if you dare try to get near one of their offspring!

The buds on the trees have burst into pretty, young, colorful leaves and birds can be heard chirping. On a sunny day, the turtles can be found sun-bathing on a rock or tree limb.

Don’t miss Spring…. Our beautiful lake is open for your enjoyment.

We Grow Friendship as well as Flowers! Pappy Surgent President.

Garden & Nature Club would like to start a column in the Knoll News pertaining to “ASK THE GARDENER” Please submit your questions on care of house plants, outside plants and flowers, including vegetables to attention [email protected] and we will try to provide suggestions. Deadline 24th of each month.

Helping HandsHEALTH & FITNESS CLUB

Laughter is the best medicine there is. I want to pass this on which might give you a chuckle. It was given to me and I found it quite funny. These are your STAY AT HOME ORDERS. Just be careful because people are going stir crazy from being in lock down.

Actually I’ve just been talking about this with the microwave and toaster while

Drinking coffee and we all agree that things are getting bad. I didn’t mention

Anything to the washing machine as she puts a different spin on everything.

Certainly not to the fridge as he is acting cold and distant. In the end the iron

Straightened me out as she said everything will be fine, no situation is too pressing.

The vacuum was very unsympathetic……..but told me to just suck it up, but the fan

Was more optimistic and hoped it would all soon blow over! The toilet looked a bit

Flushed when I asked it’s opinion and didn’t say anything but the door knob told

Me to get a grip. The front door said I was unhinged and so the curtains told me…….

Yes, you guessed it……….pull yourself together.Stay safe and Healthy . Walk around the lake, work

in your garden, or just enjoy theWarm weather. Have a good day and a good month.Hope to see you all soon when the Health and Fitness

meeting resume.Riki Giglio, Corresponding Secyt.

Once again, Spring has sprung. The flowers and the trees are in full blossom and everything that was dormant, has now come back to life. It’s a conducive time of year for making new friends and acquaintances as well as getting to know your neighbors better. There is so much that is beautiful and nostalgic about Spring.

This past weekend we had the opportunity to take a trip to a lake in Tuxedo, NY that our mom and dad took us to as kids. It seemed so small. Places that I frequented as a youngster usually appear to be more compact when I see them again as an adult. I have always wondered why this is so. The lake with its tiny beach was no exception. A couple of years ago I had the opportunity to see the inside of the house where I spent the first twelve years of my life. Each room looked so much smaller than how I had remembered it. What was once my bedroom, felt more like a closet. Even the neighborhood looked smaller. I suppose our perceptions change as we get older, as do our memories.

Speaking of memories, I shall never forget the devotion and dedication that both of my grandfathers had for the Knights of Columbus. They were very much involved in its everyday activities. My mom’s dad was usually at his council’s hall either working at a party or playing bocce.

My dad’s dad spent much of his free time working with fund raising activities for the less fortunate in his community. His two sons, my dad and my uncle were chips off the old block. It’s always nice when worthwhile traditions get passed down from one generation to the next.

Presently our April 18th Pancake Breakfast is tentatively set for Saturday July 25 between 8 am. and 10 am. at Applebee’s. If that should change, we will let you know.

Our Seminarian Dinner scheduled for June 12 has been canceled.

Stay well everyone. I’ll be looking forward to touching base with you again next month. See you then.

Matt Bernardi

Here are some funny Italian expressions, I hope you enjoy them.

1. Drunk as a monkeyTranslation: “ubriaco come una scimmia” or “avere

la scimmia addosso”. Italians don’t get wasted, we drink till we see monkeys up on our shoulders or are drunk like them! Didn’t you know monkeys love to get smashed?

2. No hair on the tongueTranslation: “Non avere peli sulla lingua”. If you are

an honest person, you would say that you don’t refrain from saying the truth, even when it hurts. In Italy, this is equivalent of having hair on your tongue. Ugh, a hairy tongue

3. The wine cask full and the wife drunkTranslation: “Avere la botte piena e la moglie

ubriaca.” It’s used when you or someone you know want to have two things that are incompatible with each other, a bit like the English expression: “to have your cake and eat it too.” Clearly Italians prefer wine to cake.

4. Very short ArmsTranslation: “Avere le braccine corte” This hilarious

Italian expression is used to identify a tight-ass stingy person who literally has arms so short they can’t reach for their wallets. Like, ever.

5. Into the wolf’s mouthTranslation: “In bocca al lupo” In Italy, we NEVER-

EVER say “good luck”, we actually believe that the expression brings bad luck, so what we wish instead is that you should go into the wolf’s mouth. Don’t ask me why!

6. To have the horns put on you (or someone)Translation: “Fare le corna a qualcuno” Now, if you

put horns on someone the Italian way, well, you are a bad, bad, bad boy (or girl). This funny Italian expression, in fact, means you’re cheating on someone. Are you?

7. To throw the packageTranslation: “Tirare/ Mollare il pacco” I actually

adore this expression because figuratively is so non-sense, but the English equivalent would be “to stand someone up”.

8. To the beanTranslation: “A fagiolo.” It’s a synonym for precision

– when things fall into place at the right moment and in the right way. It’s similar to the American expression “to the letter.”

9. Only four catsTranslation: “Solo quattro gatti”. You don’t want to

go to a party where there are “solo quattro gatti”, that’s going to be the most boring party ever! This metaphor describe a place in which there are just a few people.

10. Make the chicken laughTranslation: “Far ridere i polli” If you do make the

chicken laugh, well, you’ve done a fool of yourself and it’s likely you’ve done something ridiculous!

11. The devil makes the pots but not the lidsTranslation: “Il diavolo fa le pentole ma non i

coperchi”This is a famous Italian proverb that shows how when

someone thinks of doing something bad or dishonest, traces will always remain and the plot will be found out. It’s a bit like the English saying “what comes around goes around”.

Singles ClubLadies Golf

June is finally here and hopefully she is bringing some much-needed nice weather. Gardens have been planted, bees are buzzing and gathering nectar from all the beautiful flowers.

Life in the Knoll has changed a bit from what we were accustomed, but we are hoping to have a good summer with the ability to enjoy each other’s company, if only in small groups. Fresh air and sunshine always make everyone happier. Time to be outside and put your puzzles away.

No Singles meeting so far due to you know what. Should we get the “All Clear” our June meeting will be on Thursday, June 18th at 1:30pm in Lakeside Lodge. The trip scheduled for August 19th to Sight & Sound to see “Queen Esther” is still a go. So, for those of you who are interested I need your check of $148.00 due no later than Friday, June 26th. Please make the check payable to Leisure Knoll Singles Club. This trip is open to the community. Contact Diane Thijssens at (732) 657-5358 for more information.

As you know, “Hello Dolly” has been postponed until the middle of August. Date to be determined. So those of you who have signed up for the trip, I need your check for $62.00 the sooner the better.

There will be no meetings in July and August. Have a wonderful, safe, and healthy summer. See you in September. God Bless you all.

Lynda Dowd & Diane Thijssens

This article is being submitted today, May 2nd, for the June Knoll News and, at this point in time, we are unable to schedule any future tournaments.

I did, however, send an E-Mail to our members explaining that, even though Governor Murphy opened up the golf courses, they are not scheduling tournaments. One can play individually, as long as they adhere to certain rules and regulations set up by the courses. I placed a call to Lakehurst and they were not opening at that time.

I realize that many of our members’ cards have expired and need to be renewed before they can play at Lakehurst. I will inform you all as soon as I hear that their office is up and running.

I hope you are all enjoying this sunny weather and getting out and about to enjoy it.

I hope to see you all soon.Val Marchinetti

Oh! How I wish I had a crystal ball. How can we plan when we have no idea when we will be given the all clear to use Timberland Hall and Lakeside Lodge? With all the uncertainty surrounding us at this time, the board of the Social Club has decided to air on the side of caution. With that being said, we are going to cancel our annual pool party. We are also thinking it best to not mingle with other people from outside of the Knoll, thus it has been decided not to hold the Carnival in August.

On a happy note, we all will be well rested and when we know we will have the use of all the facilities here in the Knoll we will plan something last minute. Since we have to submit our articles a month before you get them, we will have to rely on both the Activities channel on your TV and the Unofficial Forum to get out any last minute plans for our club.

If you have any ideas or suggestions for an activity please email them to me at: [email protected]

Looking forward to our future events,Nancy Bohinski

VETERANS CLUB

THE POET’S CORNER

BEFORE BED Written by Frank Finale wind swirls snow around lamplight stars like van Gogh. Snow bandages bare elms black blooded boulevards; a celebration a non-existent parade where joy crystallizes in a child’s eyes who praising kneels at the yellow lighted dormer window.

This Community lost another Veteran, Paul Iovino, R.I.P. Paul… heaven needed a solider.

As I write this newsletter we are still confined to our home and only leave for essentials items. I hope by the time this letter hits the press we can enjoy the finer things in life. Now, if all is well, the Veterans club will be hosting a 4th of July Bar-B-Que. Everything depends on the Governor of New Jersey. It’s whatever he sees fit.

If this does happen we will be selling tickets of all who want to attend. Please keep tuned to the creeper for further information, for the price, time, (etc.).

Our club members and I feel bad that we cannot pay tribute, and honor to our fallen brothers and sisters on Memorial Day, but it’s not under our control. The Leisure Knoll Veterans Club wants to thank ALL OF OUR FIRST RESPONDERS, HOSPITAL WORKERS, DOCTORS, NURSES, GROCERY CLERKS AND STORES, GARBAGE MEN, ETC………. FOR ALL THEY ARE DOING AND KEEPING US SAFE. May God bless them all, and thank you for your Service Please keep safe, and stay well.

May God bless you all, and may God bless AmericaYour Brother Mike

THE FISHERMEN

The fishermen-- ocean wise-- watch. Gripped by the Atlantic, they stand casting plantingtheir poles against the horizon. The surfhissing bright breaks coiling aroundtheir boots. Sundown. Moonrise. The beach becomes a lunar desert. Hooking into the darkthey light their driftwood fires. Wait. The moon, a phosphorescent glow, hosts their forms.Hours later, turning to sea again, sunforsythias the horizon. On scales of light, fishermen’s pitched figures, like notes, inherit the musicof this place. A smell of salt crystals the air.

On My Mind

Have you ever seen those commercials where folks are trying to eat something and the food slaps them across the face…pretty funny, right? Television executives should hire me for those ads because food doesn’t like me. There, I’ve said it.

Growing up, when there were meals I didn’t care for, I pretended that I did. And although I was constantly reminded that my father paid for every green bean on my plate, still, I could not swallow another bite. Fish on Friday meant I ate nothing, unless it was shellfish, which never happened. I was like a waif, existing only on rice. Having said that, at 10 yrs. old, I could finish off a dozen clams on the half shell, no problem!

In the old days, a few extra pounds meant one was healthy. My grandmother would say: “Don’ you wanna be fat like me?” I just stared at her. In the movie “Gone With The Wind”, Mammy told Scarlett that a lady never cleans her plate. Be that as it may, this was not a plantation in the Old South; it was Brooklyn in the 1950s and everyone knew that people were starving in Europe. In our house, macaroni would be dumped into my bowl, and inevitably half of it was left there, cold and congealed. As a teen, Mom would give me an egg to take to the local drug store. My instructions were to ask the soda jerk (remember them?) to make a malted with my egg blended in. By some miracle I was able to almost finish it. This was supposed to “build me up”, but it didn’t work. The calories disappeared as I walked back home.

Ice cream was a treat, only enjoyed on special occasions or when the Good Humor Man drove by in the summertime. Years later when I was dating my husband, I sat at his family’s dining room table completely astonished to see his mother serve dessert after every meal… unheard of in my house. Plus, they always had ice cream in the freezer, just in case. Just in case.

I treat food with respect, chewing with my lips sewn together without a sound. I have no idea what it means to “shovel food into one’s mouth” like a grub-eatin’ cowboy belching around the campfire. Oftentimes, “Comfort Food” can turn out to be less-than-comforting for me. None-the-less, my mouth literally waters when I focus on a favorite food. The last thing I do before falling asleep is think about that cup of coffee and muffin I’ll have in the morning.

Adding insult to injury, I wonder if I’m the only one

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOODBy Gloria Watson

who is fast becoming weary of TV shows that focus on weight loss. I may be in the minority, but wouldn’t it be refreshing for a change to see a show called “The Biggest Gainer” instead of “The Biggest Loser”?

Sometimes all anyone really needs is what’s in the title of an old song written in 1925: A Cup of Coffee, A Sandwich, and You.

I REMEMBER…By Frank Finale

sound of roller skates on sidewalk pavementhow vibrations made my feet numb

I remember jingling bells Good Humor’s white truckcutting through hot July afternoons cold Creamsicles

I remember catching twilight fireflies in my jelly jar mingled with stars… mother’s sing-song voice calling me home

I remember kneeling with cousin Carol hands formingtwo small churches on bedcovers my aunt cuing us repeat after her Now I lay me down to sleep…

I remember chirruping crickets aroma of freshly mown grass wafting on night breeze through open windows

I remember full moon entangled in dark leaves of maple tree we climbed that afternoon… scarier at night

I remember waking up to birds chirping outsideinside clatter of plates from kitchen

hint of maple flavor bacon sunlight shafts fillingthe room Mom’s bell like voice calling us down to breakfast

On My Mind

Contuned on page 46

This was our bucket list trip – Go West and see the Grand Canyon! We also toured several other national parks in the area. An optional side trip on this tour was a two-hour ride on the horse trails at Bryce Canyon. I thought this a great idea…it had been decades since I got on a horse and I thought it would be fun. I arrived at the corral and there was a wonderful assortment of steeds and I fell for a beautiful Palomino horse I thought would be perfect. The cowboys, real ones with dusty cowboy hats and grizzled faces, were trying to match up riders with appropriate horses. One of the cowboy trail guides asked me about my riding experience and I confessed it was not much as I had not ridden since a teenager. He looked me up and down, sizing me up, looked around the corral and said, “You’ll ride this mule.”. I tried not to take being relegated to a mule personally and so met “Sweet Pea” ...my “ride”.

I mounted with a little assistance and she felt very solid and steady with lovely big ears. We left the corral, in a line, along a wide, level grassy path with split-rail fencing on each side and I thought “Oh this is going to be lovely!”. After about 10 minutes of this verdant gentleness we approached the rim of the canyon and the vista about took my breath away. We approached the rim of the canyon and I could see that the trail changed dramatically to a rubble and stone surface which narrowed to about 3 feet wide with a stone

“DIANNE’S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE” OR “IF ONLY I HAD KNOWN BEFOREHAND”

cliff wall on one side and the edge with nothingness on the other side…a drop of thousands of feet!

I was 6th in a line of 9 riders and so watched the ones in front of me as they negotiated this terrifying trail which became a 45 degree drop with hairpin switchbacks. For a moment I thought “Can I get off now?” but my mouth froze shut (for once in my life!) and so Sweet Pea and I followed on. I don’t know mules and have had no experience with them, but I couldn’t understand why on earth she chose to walk on the OUTER 10 to 12 inches on the path edge rather than closer to the wall. On the level bits of trail, I was able to take a few photos but for the rest of the time I hung onto that saddle horn for dear life!

For the most part Sweet Pea was sure-footed but occasionally at the switchbacks she came to a complete stop to find her footing and when I felt and heard her hooves slip and stumble on some of the stones I uttered words I heard as a child from my mother when she was at the end of her rope *jesusmaryandjoseph*! Enervating to say the least.

My heart was racing, and my mouth dry by the time we reached the bottom after an hour of terror. Our trail guide said we had ridden 2 miles down into the canyon. I was hoping at that moment she would say a helicopter was coming to pick us up now but “No” she said we would now ride back up. So, we started the climb back up and the guide asked how we all were doing, and I confessed “terrified”. She said, “If you get scared just close your eyes”. I wasn’t comforted by that advice, didn’t close my eyes but did do some deep breathing to calm myself. I figured that Sweet Pea didn’t want to die as much as I didn’t want to die so I just

TRUSTED. We didn’t die. I did, however, walk funny for about an hour after dismounting

That is the end of Dianne’s Excellent Adventure!P.S. My husband stayed back at the hotel and took a nap.

On My Mind

THE DOLDRUMS

This story has nothing to do with quilting but because of my guild’s quilting challenge I dug out my sailing log to refresh my memory. Not that you would ever forget something like this. The challenge was to make a wall hanging reflecting “Far Away Places”. It could be anywhere or

anything you wanted to express. I was trying to remember the farthest away place I had ever been and then remembered The Doldrums. Was that far away enough?

We were far away from everything. When crossing the Atlantic Ocean from West to East in a 48’ sailboat with my husband and three children, we became becalmed in the Doldrums near the Equator. It is an area with fickle weather fronts and unpredictable winds and many times no wind. For days we had been trying to catch the wind with all sails up and our lightest and largest genoa …to no avail. The boat just sat there motionless on the glassy sea. We were all getting sweaty, hot and cranky as we just sat there in the middle of the ocean not moving at all. The ocean looked cool and inviting so we decided we may as well go for a swim. We took all the sails down and attached some lines

off the stern to act as drogues. We put the ladder over the side and one by one slid into the water. It felt heavenly and so refreshing. As my girls and I swam, my husband put on a mask and snorkel to check the underside of the hull for algae and barnacle growth. After a few minutes of that inspection he looked down and saw,,, a shark in the crystal clear depths of the ocean slowing curling its way toward the surface…and us!

Our splashing about had attracted it. He shouted “SHARK” and “Get back on the boat!” and you can bet we did. We scrambled as fast as our slippery bodies could up the ladder…kids first. When we were all back on board we stood at the toe rail quietly, but with hearts racing, and stared at the water. And then it appeared. The dorsal fin sliced through the surface of the water and its long body glided silently along the side of our boat. It looked to be about 12 to 13 feet long. No one said a word. Needless to say, we never did that again.

1. When a storm is coming, all other birds seek shelter. The eagle alone avoids the storm by flying above it, so, in the storm of life, may your heart soar like an eagle.

2. An old Cherokee told his grandson, “My son, there is a battle between

two wolves inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, jealousy, greed, resentment, inferiority, lies, and ego. The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, humility, kindness, empathy, and truth.” The boy thought about it, and asked, “Grandfather, which wolf wins?” The old man quietly replied, “The one you feed.”

There could never be enough Thank-You's for Knoll resident Janet Zelinski. Her compassion, empathy, generosity, & humor exist normally without there being a crisis. During this crisis, many Knoll residents have been the recipients of baked goods, candy, clothes, flowers, food, hand-written notes and cards, phone calls, & even wine. Forever Thankful for her kindness, thoughtfulness, & overflowing joy. Submitted by Sallyann Valentino I’d like to commend Ken and Chris Greico for passing their name and number to all residents that live on Normanton Avenue in case anyone needs help. Thank you, your kindness is heartwarming. Submitted by Linda Campisi

We would love to thank Harriet Amoroso Schaefer for her endless work in donating face masks to our Knoll, God Bless. Submitted by Marie Barracato I'd like to submit Harriet Schaffer's name for the new "Thank You" section of the Knoll News. A member of the Footlighters, this woman has been making masks for our residents for weeks. She works at this nearly every day, puts them out on her porch for anyone who wants them, and does not ask for a dime in return. She posts on the Forum letting folks know when there's another batch ready so they can come to her house, get what they need, and say hello while keeping their distance. Way to go, Harriet! Our great neighbors on Marston Row have kept us safe by shopping for us so we never have to go out -- Lori Monte, Maryann Archesi & Lois Falk, and Amy Falzarano on Durham. And when I mentioned an item I couldn't get, Jon Addams and Toni Franciose had some for me. And, when I started to crochet 'mask ear savers' and put out a call for buttons, many people responded and I ended up with a good supply for our cousin who was making masks and asked for these to make them more comfortable. There isn't enough room here to mention all the people who have helped us during this situation!! Thank you all!! Submitted by Cathy Bilotta

I’d like to commend Lyn Latorraca for generously donating handmade face masks to the people who work in animal shelters. Thank you, your kindness is heartwarming.
