Plastics are at- tached to the jig head primarily Elaztech tails. Elaztech tails are used because they float and they are tough. So, when the jig is presented, the tail stands up from the bottom and wiggles. The primary tail is the 23/4 inch tickler in green pumpkin goby color. Elaztech does make other style tails including T.R.O Finesse and TRO Crawz and I am sure in many different colors. Bill fishes a lot in Door Countys very clear water so he likes 6’10” to 7’ medium-light to medium fast action rods with 2000- 2500 series spinning reels, a fine diameter super line and a 3’-4’ of 10# fluorocarbon leader. This allows Bill to make long casts and fast retrieves. The primary retrieves are the swim-glide, the hop-bounce, the drag-dead stick, and the straight swim. Ned rigging also works for big panfish and walleyes. For details and information on Ned-Rigging I recommend you get a copy of the 10,000 Smallies and Counting. Notes by Stan Nichols December/January/February 2021 issue of In-Fisherman magazine. There is an article by Ned Kehde that goes much more in-depth than I can explain on Ned rigging. For stream fishing Bills favorite lures are the Teeny-Weenie Crayfish and the 4” Kalin Grub in smoke-salt and pepper color. The Kalin attached to an 1/16 to 1/3-ounce mush- room jig head. Work the Teeny-Weenie Crayfish across or against the current. If you want to expand your repertoire Bill says you could try Keitech minnows in 2.8” t0 3.8” and black shad, shad, or goby colors. Bill prefers the smaller sizes. Keitechs are fragile but if you use Bills last name Schulzyou can get a 20% discount when ordered online. Other things to try are Kahlins Jerk Minnow-nose hocked, Yum Dingers, or hair jigs. If you like tubes, try Rite-Bite tubes in the 21/2 size and amber-purple color and get the insert jigs with them. Bill does not do drop shotting. There are the basics to get you on your way to 10,000 smal- lies. All you need is a handful of jigs, plastic tails, and a Teeny-Weenie Crayfish. You can contact Bill at smalliecen- [email protected]. It is good to get on his email list for cur- rent updates. See page 2. for some suggestions for using these tech- niques.

I did not write down how many lifetime smallmouth bass Bill

Schulz has caught but it is a ton so 10,000 is probably not an

exaggeration and it may be more. He like to catch about one

thousand a year. Bill fishes primarily in Door County and in

Southwestern Wisconsin streams, in a boat, kayak, and wading.

Over the years he has honed down is techniques to a handful of

techniques and lures that he presented at the April Zoom meet-

ing of YFC.

His primary fish getter is a Ned rig; named after Ned Kehde. It

uses light jig heads, the best is pill shaped heads by Shroomz

or Ned locks in 1/15th, 1/10th, or 1/6th ounce sizes. Black and

maybe chartreuse are the best jig head colors. Plastics are at-

tached to the jig head primarily Elaztech tails. Elaztech tails are

used because they float and they are tough. So, when the jig is

presented, the tail stands up from the bottom and wiggles. The

primary tail is the 23/4 inch tickler in green pumpkin goby color.

Elaztech does make other style tails including T.R.O Finesse

and TRO Crawz and I am sure in many different colors.

Bill fishes a lot in Door County’s very clear water so he likes

6’10” to 7’ medium-light to medium fast action rods with 2000-

2500 series spinning reels, a fine diameter super line and a 3’-4’

of 10# fluorocarbon leader. This allows Bill to make long casts

and fast retrieves. The primary retrieves are the swim-glide, the

hop-bounce, the drag-dead stick, and the straight swim. Ned

rigging also works for big panfish and walleyes. For details and

information on Ned-Rigging I recommend you get a copy of the

December/January/February 2021 issue of In-Fisherman

magazine. There is an article by Ned Kehde that goes

much more in-depth than I can explain on Ned rigging.

For stream fishing Bills favorite lures are the Teeny-Weenie

Crayfish and the 4” Kalin Grub in smoke-salt and pepper

color. The Kalin attached to an 1/16 to 1/3-ounce mush-

room jig head. Work the Teeny-Weenie Crayfish across or

against the current.

If you want to expand your repertoire Bill says you could try

Keitech minnows in 2.8” t0 3.8” and black shad, shad, or

goby colors. Bill prefers the smaller sizes. Keitechs are

fragile but if you use Bills last name “Schulz” you can get a

20% discount when ordered online. Other things to try are

Kahlin’s Jerk Minnow-nose hocked, Yum Dingers, or hair

jigs. If you like tubes, try Rite-Bite tubes in the 21/2 “ size

and amber-purple color and get the insert jigs with them.

Bill does not do drop shotting.

There are the basics to get you on your way to 10,000 smal-

lies. All you need is a handful of jigs, plastic tails, and a

Teeny-Weenie Crayfish. You can contact Bill at smalliecen-

Clam again donates $500.00 in prizes to the club.

Well, fishing season is here! I get to celebrate with my second shot on the opener. With more and more people getting vaccinated we will be moving cautiously back to in person activities. Our May club meeting will again be held on Zoom, but we hope it will be the last one. We will hold our summer on the water meetings in person, beginning with our June meeting. We will not serve a group meal however, you will need to bring your own food and drink. We also decided to cancel the June Kids Fishing Day, as none of the kids would be vaccinated by then, and it seemed unwise to bring a large group of them together. But we hope we are seeing a light at the end of the tunnel and by September we can be back to normal operations. In the mean-time, get out and enjoy some fishing!

I am sad to report the passing of two of our members. Chris Johnson passed

away on April 18th. Chris was a long time club member and a frequent partici-

pant and volunteer at club activities. There will be a celebration of life on June

13, 2021 from 1-4 p.m. at Virgin Lake Park in Stoughton. His obituary can be

found at www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/madison/name/christopher-johnson-

obituary?pid=198431796.

Jeff Winer passed away on November 17th after a battle with cancer. We only

received notice recently because of Covid. His obituary can be found at

www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/madison/name/jeff-winer-obituary?pid=197148346. A

service will be planned later.

We will miss both Jeff and Chris greatly.

The YFC has a new fundraiser, sponsored by The Pampered Chef, providers of pretty

much anything you might want for your kitchen. You can shop anytime between now

and June 4th and the club will receive 20% of anything you purchase. Anyone can or-

der so share this information with all the cooks in your family, at work, etc. And don't

forget to get your Mothers and Fathers Day shopping done!

Notes from the President

Members we will miss

We hope to see you all at the May club meeting, to be held again via Zoom on May 12th. You will get a Zoom invitation prior to the meeting, sign on starting at 6:45 pm. Our speaker will be Dean Gordon from Hooked Up Charters talking about summer opportunities on Green Bay.

We will return to in-person activities in June with our summer on the water meetings. Mark June 9th, July 14th, and August 11th on your calendars. We will continue to be cautious so food and drink for these meetings will be bring your own.

The simplicity and convenience of shore fishing has an enduring appeal (even if you own a boat!). The realization that you have some unexpected free time, and can just jump in the car, get outdoors and try a few casts, will never lose its charm. It’s a particularly important option for beginners, who can experience some immediate success and cultivate their new hobby. The Yahara Fishing Club wants to expand the shore fishing information and ideas available specifically to club members. Along with its partner organiza-tions, the club periodically publishes A Guide to Shore Fishing on the Madi-son Area Lakes (http://yaharafishingclub.org/Old_Documents/ShoreFishing.pdf), and this remains a key resource that’s always available on our website. However, we’d like to build on this effort by also providing infor-mation in the members-only section of our website on shore fishing opportuni-ties throughout the state (e.g., Door County, the Wisconsin River and its lakes, the Mississippi River, trout streams in southern Wisconsin, Lake Michi-gan, inland lakes, you name it). We could be adding to this web resource on an ongoing basis, thus providing another valuable benefit for club members. For this to be successful we need club members to share a bit of their knowledge. You don’t have to give up all the details of your favorite, secret honey holes, just tell us about general locations our members should keep in mind when the fishing bug hits and a boat isn’t in the mix. For instance, the west side of the Wisconsin River below the Sauk City dam, or Black Earth Creek west of Scherbel Road. Tell us what you know about parking, when and what to fish for, and how far the access extends. Send your contributions to one of the committee members below and they'll work with you to incorporate your ideas into the club’s shore fishing re-sources. John Pribek at [email protected] Karlette Schoen at [email protected] Stan Nichols at [email protected] In the meantime, click on the “Shore Fishing Web Page” link on the club’s Members Only page (http://yaharafishingclub.org/members-only/) and you’ll get the picture of the kind of information we want to assemble (we’ll refine the organization of these pages as the entries accumulate). Especially for our new members, these tips and ideas for convenient fishing opportunities can really help to build their enthusiasm and stick with the sport, and our club! Thanks for your help!

Happy fishing day to all. I'm still looking for more people to fill the second

boat for salmon fishing on July 8,9 2021. As of now I have one boat full and

two for the second boat. I would like to get at least four if not five more peo-

ple. So if you are interested let me know asap and I will fill you in with more detail.
