    SMILE, someones watching

  • Well, Hello all you wonderful people, and the rest of you.

Funny, I say that because once again for the 3rd month in a

row, I had over 100 E-mails about topics ranging from dis-

gruntled neighbors to false survey plots. And this is not just around Free-

port. This is a Walton County problem and from what I am finding out this problem goes

deep and wide. Too many hands shaking deals illegally. I could name, names.

A lot of past folks settled for an undisclosed amount of money over the Coyote landfill

on Hwy. 20, to never talk or say what they have seen illegally dumped over the years. So,

who can you ask for further details of these illnesses that people are having within a 5 mi.

radius of this land? It is severely contaminated and has been for years. Those involved

will not say anything other than to protect their buddy for they are also in on the whole

shady dealings. Make a Buck , who gives a F*** about the quality of living?

The more I searched the more I found disturbing. I say this because there has been too

many of you elderly I know of, who find it hard to breathe over near Hammock Bay even.

We now discovered that the owner of the Land who violated federal dumping and zoning

has been approved to build it up twice as high as the current level is? Seriously.

This is on the south side as the watershed table runs a creek through all 8 sections of

this area is garbage and debris. If you look at the footage from above, you can clearly see

how they detoured the creeks flow to run through each one of those sites. Then it works

its way from Waste management to now Waste Pro, then through cancerous agents out into..us, our homes. People who like to fish, have you noticed a tasty difference in the fish from the Bay? That is due to higher than safe levels of Mercury from the landfill. So, maybe your in the upper part of the county. You dont live near there. Why bother to have this EPA< DEP forced them to clean up BEFORE they build up? They just plan on

dumping more dirt and burying the evidence. There arent even liners as most ALL Land-fills are required to do. North of Freeport, who cares?

Maybe your kids swim in the Bay, you like to fish and eat the contaminated fish. If you

have an open sore, DO NOT get in the Bay! Everyones been paid, now its be quite? Think about this, if you have a well, dont drink from it. Your soil has been contami-nated with who knows what? There are no records of what actually has been buried out

there. Household waste is visible, to chemicals from Pensacola even. Thats just what they declared to. The Land surrounding the fill was not permitted for such a Landfill to

even be that close to our water systems. But again, the county just shakes hands and takes

the money. Who will pay your medical bills? Your burial costs? Who suffers? YOU!

All of us citizens have seen the trucks between 11-5am going in and out. No Names on

trucks , we did see hazardous waste signage on some of them. Thats been over 10 yrs. I know of. This will ruin Freeport if we dont have the state take this over. Jail people! What really truly bothers me is that when people dump whatever in the ground, they

dont think of the kids or neighbors whos soil will become more and more contaminated (unless its cleaned up and taken away from our watershed). Now, you all know we have been talking about crappy neighbors, but when it involves so many long time big name

families within this county. Who else is sick? Come tell your story to us.

Who else is concerned about the living conditions, the air quality you breathe in down

wind from these Landfills? Go check out where the water comes out into the Bay, its growing orange craters and other diseased plantations along the creek itself. Do you think

by adding more and doubling its size it will get only worse? I have lab results Id like to share with you. Who else has had eye burning walking around Hammock Bay?

I have papers and (unlike Hillary) also E-mails from the governor himself to our County

Commissioners. Make a Public Records request and you can read it all yourself. Ive spent 4 days digging thru it all and Im not even halfway there. I have too much informa-tion that could fill this newspaper for the next 6 editions about this one situation. We have

come to realize that we will be known as a dumping ground more than a clean environ-

ment to raise a family in around Freeport. I know I dont want to see this continue. How many of you reading this are concerned? Concerned enough to meet with us and other

citizens at Freeport City Hall on June 27th...10am to noon. This is a non formal gathering

open to the public for the people of Walton county to make a complaint more formal. We can raise awareness as a group of citizens than trying to deal with Billy Bob on the

Board by yourself. We have some interesting fact findings, as well as a few guest speak-

ers asking your opinion. Act today, for tomorrow depends on us!

This meeting is designed to give us individuals a way to get things done from the

county after they have neglected so many roads for so many years. Enforcing Zoning is-

sues no matter where they are, big and small. They say that it is us Yankees who are de-

manding more enforcement. It has been all the locals doing shady dealings that have this

the way it is now. This has to stop! From the crooked cops, judges, commissioners, school board and some teachers. We need a shake-down! Video the police too!

When you accept money to knowingly endangering a whole city from clean water and

air, you are no good! Greedy non-sense. Spread the money everyone will be quite? Are

you willing to have you and your kids lives be shortened for what is in the ground affects

us all to some level or degree? Yankees want to be proud to live here, not MISERY.

Its never too late to get involved. As a society we will gather in time of need for others, that is what community is all about. Enforce property lines.. Just as we saw abuse from our government officials all over our nation, watch

where your tax dollars are going and see how it is being spent. If you dont agree with it, go to a meeting and speak up.lets work together! Changes only come when enough people call to order of descent standards for

which we all can live by. Therefore there are Laws / rules to follow or be jailed.

**If it isnt on your property it is on someone elses.county, then state. Too many complaints never corrected by action. Only talk and false promises has

been the way it has been for many years. The time has come to make the BS

train STOP! Find out how are tax $$ being spent. Dig further. David Calhoun

  • EXCLUSIVE to the EDITOR: It is what it is . . . but what will you DO about it,

Freeport? Over the last few months Ive received numerous calls on my cell phone informing me that my dog was found on the side of the road and had been hit. One might at first believe the caller was a concerned citizen, and an animal lover, trying to reunite the injured dog with his owner.

The first time this occurred, I had just left my house to run errands, leaving my dogs secured in their indoor kennels. Panic flooded my brain as I

tried to fathom how one of my dogs had escaped the security of my home. So, I questioned the caller, asking what did the dog look like and how

was my phone number obtained? The caller replied that they had found my number on the dogs tag, but their description of the dog was wrong. Obviously, it wasnt either of my dogs. Okay, honest mistake, maybe. Thanks for calling. Then, it happened again. This time I was suspicious instead of frightened. You guessed it, the caller described a breed of dog I didnt own. I re-plied harshly that I dont own a Yorkie and hung up. The next time I got this scam call, my dogs were beside me on the couch. Click!

What would have happened to me if I had been duped and agreed to meet any of these callers? Would I have been robbed? Is this a clever ISIS

attempt to kidnap people to hold for hostage, or a human trafficker looking for fresh bodies or body parts? My imagination envisioned other

    equally disturbing scenarios.

In our current culture of non-morality, there is a need to be hyper-cautious, especially if you are young, a single woman or elderly. Women espe-

cially are vulnerable, as we are taught by society to be sweet and kind toward everyone. Unfortunately, in this day and age, with these kinds of

threats, being sweet and kind toward strangers might lead to a dangerous situation, which you might not return from. Southern women will van-

ish as the gentile creatures we have been, and no longer bless your heart. In Walton County, Florida, we have Animal Control and laws, but they arent enforced. Ask anyone who has ever called the Sheriff about a neighbors dog continually being allowed to run freely, off leash or without the control of the owner, creating a danger to you or your property. You are on your own to deal with the problem, if your neighbor is not considerate or responsible. No amount of evidence is sufficient, so forget

taking pictures or videos. Law enforcement will NOT help you and will tell you they have to see it happening in order to take action. REALLY?

The people who developed Walton County will tell you that no one used to get upset about someone trespassing on their land. Well, those same

people sold their land and took our money for it. We now hold deeds that state we have the right to quiet enjoyment of it. So, no matter if we are natives or transplants, we have the right to say who or what comes onto our property. If you didnt want that change then you shouldnt have taken our money. Now, we demand protection of our property rights from invaders, which the Sheriff has consistently refused to do.

More and more, it is becoming increasingly difficult to get the agencies in our county, to respond to or address the growing problems that affect all

of us and our ability to live here safely and peacefully. A beautiful place to visit, but what the terrorist-tourists dont know is thats it is hell to live in. The tourists are presenting many problems themselves, that arent dealt with by anyone in authority, because of the fear of losing the reve-nue and accompanying jobs. Personally, a bad house guest in my home gets shown the door and they are NEVER invited back. With so many

visitors, laws need to be enforced!!! Maybe, we also need a three times and you cant come back rule. Just traveling down the obstacle course of Highway 331 is taking your life in your hands, particularly if a tourist or construction worker doesnt want to adhere to the 45 M.P.H. posted speed limit and tailgates or illegally passes you creating a danger for north and southbound traffic. Where

is law enforcement? Maybe we need citizen patrols on our streets.

Another glaring example of local government inaction: I heard that Elizabeth Brannon has been attempting to address the Erin Brockovich problem of Coyote Landfill, but is never given a platform to speak and present her findings. My own experience is that on certain days of ripe

weather conditions, there is a stench and a burning in your nostrils when in that vicinity. Who remembers Mr. Van Dorn, who lived on the edge of

the landfill, and had lung complications before he finally died. How many mysterious illnesses, like I also had, will the people in Hammock Bay

and their children suffer before the problem is publically uncovered and rectified? The EPA informed me that Coyote Landfill was fined, and told

to throw dirt on the mound to prevent noxious fumes, yet the problem has persisted for over ten years, to my knowledge. Maybe, landfills dont belong anywhere within 50 miles of an inhabited zone, and maybe the citizens should file a class action lawsuit against Coyote to remove and/or

    clean up the site.

Law enforcement in Walton County is hit and miss, and it seems they are just sitting like

intimidating sentinels, on every corner of our neighborhoods, unable or unwilling to do

the difficult job of protect and serve ALL of the citizens. Instead, to this writer, it ap-pears the lawless are the ones being protected, particularly the lawless who have influen-

tial contacts or deep pockets. We can achieve this in numbers of people and petitions.

I recently had the pleasure of a long conversation with the Publisher/Editor of this paper,

Mr. Frank Wolfe, Jr., and discussed some of the things Ive written here and my concerns with the problems in Walton County. It is my hope, that Mr. Wolfe, with the cooperation

of the Mayor Russ Barley, will begin to conduct regular town hall meetings to discuss

how these problems can be brought to light and solved. I hope everyone in Walton County will support such an endeavor, attend and fully participate at these meetings to

    voice their comments and ideas.

Together, We the People of Walton County, can make this a beautiful place to live again.

Retirement a prescription for living By Ron Kelley

A person can retire from work without retiring from

life. When the work has been healing, mending and

fixing what is broken, retirement must surely bring the

satisfaction of knowing that you have made a funda-

mental difference in peoples lives. I love medicine and I have loved helping people, said Larry Rafey. I have been involved in science and medicine all my life and I have enjoyed every

minute, but now is the right time to step back and en-

joy the rest of what my life has to offer. Larry Rafey, a certified physician assistant who has

been on the staff at Healthmark Regional Medical

Center for the last seven years, officially retired in

April. Rafey said his life has taken turns he never ex-

pected. Rafey is of Lebanese descent but was born in

St. Louis, Missouri. His family moved to Fairfax

County, Virginia, and he attended West Nottingham

Academy in Colora, Maryland, graduating in 1966.

Rafey took pre-med classes at George Washington

University, then became interested in micro-biology.

He studied this at American University in Washing-

ton, D.C., and did his grad work at Georgetown Uni-

versity. Then came a stint as a research assistant in the

area of organ transplants at the University of Colo-

    rado.

Rafey opened a diagnostic lab for micro-biology in

Alexandria, Virginia. He and three other researchers

studied infectious diseases in places like East Africa

and the south China seas. Eventually, Rafey decided

to become a practicing physician and enrolled at How-

ard University College of Medicine, in Washington,

    D.C.

I came to the decision to become a practicing phy-sician a little later in life than is typical. Most doctors

finish college, go straight into med school and then

into residency, said Rafey. I already had a success-ful career in micro-biology when I decided to become

a physician. Academic counselors at Howard Univer-

sity encouraged me to enroll in a three-year fast-track program in rural medicine, rather than the tradi-tional four years. It is the same med school course and

examinations squeezed into three years instead of

four. That sounded good to me, so I agreed. It wasnt until much later that I discovered that upon graduation

I would be a P.A. instead of an M.D. By then I had

gone too far to start over. A P.A. is a physician assistant, requiring four years

of college and then a specialized training program

lasting anywhere from 3-4 years. An M.D. is a medi-

cal doctor, who has four years of college, four years of

medical school, one year of rotating internship and at

least three to four years of residency training for a

    particular specialty.

Still, I have had a great career in medicine and have successfully treated thousands of patients, he said. I did my residency in California, then went to

North Okaloosa Medical Center to work in the pediat-

rics department, filling in for Dr. Leva, who had

passed away. When NOMC got a fulltime pediatri-

cian, I went to Bonifay and joined Dr. Ikram Qureshi

at his office. I really liked northwest Florida and the

DeFuniak Springs area, so when an opening became

available at Healthmark, I jumped at it and have been

    here ever since.

    A Billion Smokers, 240 Million

    Alcohol Abusers

Global tally finds adult health toll from legal substances may exceed that

    from illicit drugs

Tobacco and alcohol take a big toll on the health of people around the

world, a new global survey shows.

The research suggests that about a billion people -- more than 20 percent

of the world's adult population -- smoke, and 240 million, or almost 5

percent, suffer from alcoholism or a related disorder.

The study, led by Linda Gowing, an associate professor at the Univer-

sity of Adelaide in Australia, reveals a much larger negative impact

from alcohol use than from illegal drugs. In fact, the report estimates

that alcohol's impact in terms of disability is more than three times

    higher.

"The most striking thing to emerge is how much more damage is done

to society by legal drugs than illegal ones," study co-author Robert

West, editor-in-chief of the journal Addiction, said in a journal news

release. The study was published in the journal recently.

The report found that the heaviest drinkers in the world are in Eastern

Europe, where an estimated 3.7 gallons of alcohol are consumed per

    person, on average, per year.

Northern Europe isn't far behind, the study found, while people in Cen-

tral, Southern and Western Asia drink the least, averaging about a half-

    gallon of alcohol annually.

Smoking is most common in Eastern Europe and the Oceania region (30

percent of adults) and Western Europe (20 percent). North and Central

America/Caribbean use injection drugs the most, with the lowest rate in

    Northern Europe.

Gowing's team noted that getting reliable statistics on illicit drugs is

much tougher, but they estimate that about 15 million people worldwide

inject illicit drugs such as heroin.

    Drug Abuse

Drug abuse isn't just about street drugs. Besides marijuana, legal medi-

cines are the most commonly abused drugs in the U.S. Over-the-counter

and prescription drugs can help and heal us. But some can be addictive

and dangerous if theyre used the wrong way.

    Barbiturates

These are sedatives like phenobarbital, pentobarbital (Nembutal), and se-

cobarbital (Seconal). They help with anxiety, sleep problems, and some

seizures. But if you take more than prescribed, you can get addicted. High

doses can cause trouble breathing, especially if you use them when you

drink alcohol. If you cant function without barbiturates, get help. Going

    into withdrawal

  • Cont from previous page Larry Rafey said he has seen Healthmark change and grow. Being ranked No. 2 in the state for patient satisfaction last year

was a great accomplishment for the hospital. We have

some excellent physicians in the hospital and clinic here

today. The nursing staff is wonderful. It is just one of

the best small hospitals I have seen. he said. Rafey acknowledged that there is a darker side to

health care. The recent changes enacted by state and federal authorities are the problem with health care, said Rafey. Bureaucrats and insurance executives de-cide what treatments and procedures they will pay for

and neither doctors nor hospitals can afford to provide

tests and treatments for which they know they will not

be paid. The new laws are ruining health care, so its probably a good time for me to me to hang up my

stethoscope and retire. Clinic Director Candance Geiselman praised Rafeys knowledge and skill. Larry is an excellent practioner and his patients love him. Hes easy to work with. Were really going to miss him around here but, of course, we all wish him the very best. Rafey was quick to affirm that he wont spent his re-tirement in a rocking chair. I bought a house out in the country and I plan to spend more time out in my garden.

I also plan to do more writ-

ing. Rafey is an accom-plished author. His novel

  • Healthmark Health Matters

When all is swell When one arm or leg swells persistently, it could mean there is a serious problem. Lym-

phedema refers to swelling that generally oc-

curs in one arm or leg, though it can affect both

    arms or both legs.

Lymphedema is most commonly, though not

always, caused by the removal of or damage to

the lymph nodes as a part of cancer treatment,

but it might not occur until months or years

after treatment. According to researchers at

Mayo Clinic, lymphedema is a blockage in the

lymphatic system, which is part of the immune

system. The blockage prevents lymph fluid

from draining well, and the fluid buildup leads

    to swelling.

The bad news is there is no cure for lymphe-dema. The good news is it can be managed with

early diagnosis and diligent care of the affected limb.

Lymphedema signs and symptoms include swell-

ing of part or all of the arm or leg, including fingers

or toes, a feeling of heaviness or tightness and re-

stricted range of motion. There may also be aching discomfort, recurring infections

and hardening or thickening of the skin.

Lymphedema occurs when lymph vessels are unable to adequately drain lymph fluid, usually from an arm or leg. Lymphedema can occur on its own or it can be

caused by another disease or condition, which is more common. Any condition or

procedure that damages your lymph nodes or lymph vessels can cause lymphedema.

Late-onset lymphedema usually begins after age 35. Factors that may increase the

risk of developing lymphedema include age, obesity and rheumatoid or psoriatic

    arthritis.

Lymphedema in the arm or leg can lead to serious complications, such as a serious

bacterial infection of the skin (cellulitis) and an infection of the lymph vessels

(lymphangitis). The smallest injury to the arm or leg can be an entry point for infec-

    tion.

Lymphedema treatments include light exercises that move the affected limb to

encourage lymph fluid drainage. Exercises should not be strenuous but should focus

on gentle contraction of the muscles in the arm or leg.

Wrapping the arm or leg encourages lymph fluid to flow back toward the trunk of

the body. The bandage should be tightest around fingers or toes and loosen as it

moves up the arm or leg. A lymphedema therapist can demonstrate how to

    wrap the limb.

Talk of the Town By Sara Bowers

    DeFuniak Springs City Manager

Residents and visitors alike agree that the Lakeyard around Lake DeFuniak

is one of the towns most scenic locations. That makes it the perfect setting for LakeFest, an event planned for Saturday, May 30, in and around Lake

DeFuniak. It will be a full day of activities for the whole family.

The event officially starts at 9 a.m., but there will be an early morning fun

run, with registration beginning at 6 a.m. After the run, registration for the water sports will

begin at 8 p.m. Opening ceremonies and childrens activities start at 9 a.m. Throughout the day, there will be entertainment, arts and crafts, a car show and lots of food and fun for every-

one. There is no admission charge but there are fees for the water sports and fun run. Please

make plans to bring the whole family and enjoy LakeFest in beautiful DeFuniak Springs.

DeFuniak Springs is host to many family activities, festival and events throughout the year.

In the last few weeks, locals and visitors have enjoyed the citys amazing Marvel of Flight event at the city airport, The Friendship House presented their annual Spring Fling, which fea-

tured arts and crafts, entertainment, a dog show and more, as well as Peddlers Alley, an open air garage sale held in the downtown alleyways, sponsored by the DeFuniak Springs Visitors

    Bureau.

Coming in July, the DeFuniak Business and Professional Association will present their 24th

annual Fourth of July celebration, complete with a parade, entertainment and fireworks over

the Lake DeFuniak, all free to the public.

At the DeFuniak Springs City Council meeting of May 11, the Council approved a request

for a 5K Fun Run to benefit the North Walton Relay for Life. The run will be held on October

3rd. At the same meeting, the Council approved relocating the annual Energy Expo to the

Walton County Fairgrounds. The Energy Expo is a city-sponsored event begun several years

ago that had been held each year in the Lakeyard. However, due to reoccurring inclement

weather and the desire to include a hazardous materials collection day, the event was moved to

the fairgrounds. The Energy Expo is scheduled for Saturday, November 7, from 9 a.m. until 2

    p.m.

With all these fun activities and festivals going on, who is minding the store? Not to worry.

The Council just took action on a couple of other projects that, while not as fun, are just as

important. The Council is looking at moving forward with a grant application to make infra-

structure improvements along Live Oak Avenue, west of U.S. 331. The project will include

improvements to the sewer system and then the roadway itself.

The Council also voted to seek a grant to continue to replace old and crumbling water lines

with new pipes to provide safe drinking water for our residents and help eliminate the amount

of water that is lost every year to leaky pipes.

Knowing that such projects are vital to the future well-being of our city, the Council contin-

ues to lay the groundwork, literally and figuratively, upon which our city can develop and

grow for generations to come. To find out more about Council activities, meeting dates, agen-

das and more, please visit us online at www.defuniaksprings.net.

    Funny. Look

    the Editor is Capricorn..

If you find yourself thinking more about an ex this week, don't be surprised. even send a friendly text are

all possibilities. If you find yourself having an actual conversation with your old flame, the two of you

might be very tempted to give things a second try. Don't rush into this -- no matter how enticing it is.

There's a reason you broke up in the first place. The road only got muddier than it was before.

If you're in a relationship, it's possible that you and your partner will not see eye-to-eye on a family

matter. There could be a decision you need to make together concerning your living situation or about a

relative. If so, it'll be hard to reach an agreement. If you can delay this conversation until later next month,

that would be ideal. If you're dating someone casually, one of your friends might try to interfere.

There's plenty to talk about this week with your lover. The problem is that he or she might not understand

everything that you have to say. The ruler of your romance sector, the Sun, will enter chatty Gemini on

Thursday but earlier in the week, Mercury will have already turned retrograde in the same part of your

chart. Translation? This won't be the time to make vital decisions.

A bright New Moon in your sign on Monday will set the stage for a personal fresh start. This can involve

your romantic life but it can just as easily be another area if love isn't your main focus these days. Still, if

you want something in love, now is your time to plant those seeds. At least a few hints wouldnt help?

This might not be the smoothest week for you. Mercury will turn retrograde in your sign, making it diffi-

cult for you to clearly express yourself. Take your time and be sure to do what you can to clarify your

thoughts -- especially to your partner. The two of you might have a major disagreement about a financial

matter. If its your to blame for it, be ready to take the words he speaks. Budget baby.

If you're looking to make new friends, you're in luck. New Moon will fall in the area of your chart that

rules your social life, opening the door wide. If single, this will be a good time to consider Internet dating

or to install a dating app on your phone. If you're in a relationship, Thursday might be extra intense. You

might feel as if you are constantly making compromises. You are! You must choose best!

You might not have the easiest time communicating with pals this week. If you wanted to have a conver-

sation with one of your friends, you might not exactly like the outcome of your dialogue. Know that until

June 11, it'll be easy to experience mishaps in communication and that it'll affect your social life most

dramatically. You need to be prepared for what may happen when you break someones trust.

Your love life might be sticky -- or just plain out of control. On one hand, expect plenty of passion. Feel-

ings can easily go to an extreme and there's no such thing as middle ground. On the other hand however,

you might start to feel that your lover has more control over your life than you're comfortable with. This

might express itself strongly in your social life and your personal dreams.

New Moon will fall in the most intimate area of your chart -- the 8th House of Deep Sharing. This can set

the stage for you to have an erotic encounter with someone. He or she might be your partner if you're in a

relationship, but if you're single, this is a rife set up for a hot and steamy sexual indulgence. In fact, on

Thursday the power of attraction will be a major theme and you will feel good.

There's definitely news for you in the relationship department since a promising New Moon will fall in

your partnership sector on Monday. This can set the stage for a fresh start between you and your mate --

especially if you have felt as though things are getting stale. Now you'll have an opportunity to liven up

your relationship using your senses as a guide. Get to where you want to be, to relax.

This week, matters of the heart will likely be more work than pleasure. First, Mercury will turn retrograde

in your partnership sector. Until June 11, this signals that you and your mate have some work to do in the

communication department. Take a "roll your sleeves up" approach and be willing to do the work neces-

sary to improve things between you and your mate. Your fault or not, if wanna keep her, pay the price!

Love potential is all over your chart this week! First, a glittering New Moon in your romance sector on

Monday can be all you need to help you meet someone special. Of course, you'll have to do your part and

make an effort to be social. If you do, the Universe is willing and ready to reward you. If you're in a rela-

tionship, Thursday will be a day to remember. The hold you have on your lover can't be underestimated.

Use your power wisely. She will send you a sign thru her eyes and it captivates you 100%.

  • Last week, however, the folks behind the MIITTO launched a

Kickstarter campaign to finally bring this sustainable kettle to

market, and it's already doubled its initial fund-

ing goal. So how exactly does the MIITO

work? Pretty much like any other induction

cooktop, but with one major design change: It

includes a detachable magnetic rod that serves

as the sole heating element. This allows you to

use a variety of mugs, bowls, and cups as heat-

ing vessels. And because induction technology

is so efficientdelivering 80-90 percent of its energy, compared to only 38 percent with gas

burnersit can boil water a heck of a lot faster

than other methods. Check it online.

  • Paying Tribute to My Students:

A Teachers Point-of-View By Rian Lyday

While most teachers gear up for the end of the year by counting down the days in 12 places around their

classroom and calculating how many days they have in

their summer this year, I am sad as the school year comes

to a close. I have been fortunate enough to have 24 5th

graders who have made me love teaching all over again. I

am not going to lie and say that every day has been a bowl

of cherries, they know it hasnt, but these children have truly wiggled their ways into my heart and made me laugh

more times than I can count. I started teaching this particu-

lar class at the beginning of the second semesterusually walking into a classroom after another teacher can be a

struggle. Both the families and the students went out of

their way to make me feel loved and accept me as a part of

their educational lives. They have supported my family

with love, prayers, and fund raising, while my niece begins

her journey with brain cancer. (They each wear a grey

bracelet with the words, No one fights alone on it.) They have fallen in love with my dogs and my son. I have been

blessed to be allowed to have the past few months growing

academically and emotionally with each one of my stu-

dents. So for you, my 24 little Lyday 5th graders, I wrote

this poem to express my thanks for allowing me to be your

    teacher.

Weve only been together 5 months in June,

I ask myself how did the summer come so soon? You have each made me laugh and lose my mind

We dance at the end of each day to unwind.

The lessons we shared, I will never forget

Especially things like the coral reef and Holocaust units.

    Lawyers, guns and

    money: Waco chaos

moves to courtroom The bullets are no longer flying,

but the legal battles are just

    beginning after the deadly

    shootout in Waco, Texas, as

    lawyers prepare for the deluge

    of criminal court cases.

    An explosion of violence be-

    tween rival gangs over the

    weekend left nine people dead

and led to the arrests of 170

    people.

Bond was set at $1 million each

for just about all the 170 sus-

    pects, and jailers were working

    Tuesday to keep rival biker

    gang members apart in lockup.

That leaves the matter of prose-

cuting 170 people on a charge

    of engaging in organized crime.

    That's a felony that can bring a

sentence of five years to life in

    prison.

Some of those charges could be

    upgraded to murder, a capital

    offense. Texas has the death

    penalty.

    McLennan County District At-

    torney Abelino Reyna has been

mum thus far on how he plans

    to press forward. Defense law-

yers in Texas say Reyna and his

team of about a dozen felony

    prosecutors will be over-

    whelmed and will need help

    from the state attorney general's

    office.
