The Fisch. . . Ing Line

The Pentecost Sequence

During the liturgical year, there are four times when a Sequence may be read, chanted or sung. These poetic verses are usually done before the Alleluia and the Gospel. In 2021, the Sequence days occur on Easter (April 4), The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (June 6), Our Lady of Sorrows (September 15) and today, Pentecost (May 23).

For our meditation as we conclude this Easter Season on this Great Solemnity of the Holy Spirit, or any day we pray:

Come, Holy Spirit, Come! And from your celestial home Shed a ray of light divine!

Come, Father of the poor! Come, source of all our store! Come, within our bosoms shine.

You, of comforters the best; You, the soul’s most welcome guest; Sweet refreshment here below;

In our labor, rest most sweet; Grateful coolness in the heat; Solace in the midst of woe.

O most blessed Light divine, Shine within these hearts of yours, And our inmost being fill!

Where you are not, we have naught, Nothing good in deed or thought, Nothing free from taint of ill.

Heal our wounds, our strength renew; On our dryness pour your dew; Wash the stains of guilt away:

Bend the stubborn heart and will; Melt the frozen, warm the chill; Guide the steps that go astray.

On the faithful, who adore And confess you, evermore In your sevenfold gift descend;

Give them virtue’s sure reward; Give them your salvation, Lord; Give them joys that never end.

Amen. Alleluia

Blessed Pentecost! Alleluia!

Fr. Andrew Fischer

Deacon’s Den by Deacon Pat Wood

This is an opportune time to pause in our study of the newlyweds to take a look at a family, The Holy Family. Since May is the month for Mary and this is a year for St. Joseph, we have so much to be thankful for in having this Holy Family in our lives. What an awesome responsibility and privilege it was to raise the Savior of the world.

It all began when Mary said “yes” to the angel to bear in her womb the infant Jesus. Joseph, an honorable man, also said “yes” when the angel told him in a dream to not be afraid to take Mary into his home. This young couple endured so much to give birth to Jesus, protect Him from King Herod and raise Him in His Jewish roots. Near the birth of their son, they had to travel to Bethlehem for the census and upon arrival finding no place to stay.

We often reflect on what these young parents knew of what the future held for their special child. Being warned in a dream to go to Egypt for the safety of the child, they loaded the donkey and traveled to an unknown and unsafe land. Joseph obviously knew for sure from his dreams that he was the protector of this family and was to keep them hidden from Herod and the devil. Only after returning from Egypt could they raise their child in familiar and friendly surroundings. They then were able to experience the great joy in seeing the delight of a child as he was introduced to many things for the first time. They could experience the satisfaction of training their son in a trade and raising him in the faith.

In the end Mary, the mother of Jesus and now our mother, endured the crucifixion and felt her heart pierced as Simeon had predicted. But Mary and Joseph are parents we can look to for guidance and assistance. They are a family we should try to imitate. We know that we can always ask Mary to intercede for us in our needs. We know that we can pray to St. Joseph for protection and a peaceful death. Through prayer, our family can establish a relationship with the Holy Family.

Mission Cooperation Sunday is on June 5th & 6th in 2021. Normally, a missionary comes to visit the parish and speak during homily time at mass. Because of Covid-19 restrictions this year, there will be no in person talks. The mission group of the Diocese of Masaka, has been hit very hard by the Covid-19 virus and that has made it very difficult to evangelize and get medical treatment for its people. The evangelization of the people of the diocese is minimal at this time. Caring for the basic needs of the people the mission group must supply them with food and other essentials. Most of all the people need your prayers and financial support . Please realize that while the appeal is not in person the need is greater than ever. The poor have been hit especially hard by the pandemic. So now more than ever be as generous as possible.
