Adolph Hitler wrote in his book Mein Kampf, that to contro

the populace the government must control the newsand control the schools. He did that well. He abolishedFreedom to Protest and Freedom of the Press under the

guise of safeguarding Germany from the Communists. Hearrested any teacher who did not display his picture and

teach the perfect race ideology. These two actions led tothe rise of absolute control over German citizens.

    By Bruce Auchly, FWP

Fast approaching is that timeo the year when we are awash inyoung.  Birds and mammals, large andsmall, will be all around us. And

that’s not even counting fish.  Which begs the question:What’s a kind-hearted soul to dowhen conronted with a baby (fill inthe blank)?  While it’s a bit early or the peako young animals to be born, somehave already hit the ground, or nest, and that is prompting phone callsabout what to do when those cute-as-a-button youngsters are ound.

Just a sidebar here, but I don’tever remember anyone calling to saythey ound a bunch o baby snakesand they are so cute.  Already raptors, like baldeagles and great horned owls, havenestlings. So do Canada geese. Forlarge mammals, antelope young arehere as well as bears and by the firstweek o June, both species o deerand elk will join in the un.

And then there are rabbits. For weeks already, riends havebemoaned the issue o the householdcat dragging in what’s lef o a babybunny. When it comes to rabbits, andhares, many are born and many die.

Montana is home to sevenmembers o the amily Leporidae:pygmy rabbit, black-tailed andwhite-tailed jackrabbits, snowshoehare, and Eastern, desert andmountain cottontails. Te mostcommon o the bunch, the onesmost people would see regularly, are the white-tailed jackrabbits andmountain cottontails.  And the bunnies most ofen

dragged in by Boots the cat aremountain cottontails, even out onthe prairie. Eastern cottontails aremostly just ound in a ew countieson the eastern and southeasternborders o the state.  Desert cottontails becomemore numerous in areas o easternand southeastern Montana. Butthe mountain cottontails’ territorycovers both sides o the Continental

Divide, rom Idaho to the Dakotaand Wyoming to Canada.  And brothers and sisters arthey ever ertile. Kerry Foresmanbook, “Mammals o Montana”, pegthe gestation length o the mountai

cottontail at 28-30 days, they cahave our to five litters per year, anaverage our to six young in a litter  Tat’s not to say every emalproduces 30 young a year (thino that hospital bill). But rom latwinter through summer, somewherthere’s a young cottontail born.  So back to our original questioo what to do when finding a younanimal. Te answer is leave it alon

which can be tough to do.  Look, only a raction othe cottontails born make it ta reproducing adult. But thatenough. Besides all those younrabbits that do not survive eed threst o the ood chain, whether itsnakes, badgers and coyotes on thground or raptors rom the sky.  I a cottontail lives to two yearit deserves Social Security.
