Please Pray for our sick

This weekend is special … because for most people it

is a 3-day weekend! Monday is Memorial Day … a

National Holiday … a day to stay home from work … and

spend time with family and friends. But why? Well 150 years ago, on May 30, 1868, just a few years

after the end of our country’s Civil War, General John

Logan placed flowers on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.

Originally called Decoration Day it became an annual day of remembrance for Americans who fought and died for our country.

It soon became known as Memorial Day – a day honoring all American men and women who served in any wars where they defended our freedom and way of life.

In 1971, Memorial Day was shifted to the last Monday in May to ensure a 3-day weekend for most workers.

Sadly, over the years, the observance of Memorial Day has diminished to the point where many Americans have forgotten the meaning of the Memorial Day holiday.

It should be way more than just having a day off to go shopping or sailing or grilling hot dogs!

It should be a day to recall how precious and fragile our freedom is and to give thanks to God for the courageous soldiers who fought to preserve our way of life.

How many Americans died for our Country? The Civil War was the deadliest war, because the

soldiers on both sides were American and in that 5-year war nearly 500.000 Americans died! If we include all the wars we’ve had to engage in over our 242 years as a country, over

1.1 Million Americans have lost their lives. We’re free today because so many brave people have

gone before us protecting and preserving our freedom. As you enjoy this weekend, please realize that

Freedom is never free. So, give thanks to God daily for the love of Jesus who gave his life to free us from sin and death. And as you gather this Memorial Day weekend, give thanks to God for the many courageous men and women who gave their lives defending the peace and freedom that we continue to enjoy today.

Happy Memorial Day … and may God bless America!

Love, Father Deering
